When younger the Goliath trying learn more about his heritage, sets off to a mountain that used to be considered sacred amongst stone giants until it was abandoned, but no one is sure why. When you get up about halfway you see a shrine. You walk up to it feeling strange ,it's like the crystal and stone the shrine is made of is alive with energy. You hear a voice in your head telling you that if you accept their gift and their trials you will gain the relationship and understanding of your distant giant kin. that would be the back story I'd go with for this character. What do think of the one dnd Goliath and how would you build with it. It would go really well with the slow warlock, allowing you to drop an opponents speed 30 feet in one turn.
I play a goliath celestial warlock, but his first level was barbarian so I can stone's endurance and rage to get more out of armor of agathys. I just got gift of the ever living ones and havent really seen it in play yet. We have seen the Sprite familiar get two combatants sleep locked in the last combat, which was hilarious and so cool.
I remember when I played warlock for the first time what I always ended up doing was using mold earth or shape water to create 3/4's cover then casting darkness to give myself heavy obscurement. This meant I had a +5 to AC and dex saves in addition to making any attack that requires sight to just not work automatically in addition to attack at advantage. It pissed my DM off to no end because the druid would use spike growth meaning most melee enemies couldn't even get close while the enemy ranged fighters had to rely on AOE spells if they had them like fireball which I have a +5 on the save against.
Sadly, this one doesnt work as gift of the ever living ones triggers off rolling dice to regain hit points, and vampiric touch rolls damage dice but gives hitpoints equal to the damage. But a friendly DM might well just let you roll for the damage but get the max possible heal, because it seems fitting.
So, I have been looking at a melee warlock build and also at a celestial warlock build. Since coming onto your channel, I’ve really begun to love the idea of the Goliath as a race for tanking on the frontlines, which is so cool. This build has some unreal synergies, and I’m loving it! Thanks for the inspiration!
I've built an abjuration wizard with one (1) level in fighter, and it's an insane sponge Ward+stone's endurance+21ac+shield+blur And it's a WIZARD TANK Goliath is fantastic!
dropped out of Strixhaven, was helping his relatives at the family stone quarry, when there was a bad blizzard, his uncle said to pack up the tools and come up from the open pit, he was setting up the ladder to climb up, when he thought he heard a weird whinny, there was a unicorn foal who had somehow fallen in to the pit, he carried it back up, set its leg in his uncle's spare bedroom, then helped it rejoin the herd, and the alpha unicorn did that touching its horn to his forehead thing, and now he's a warlock
My first 5e character was a Tortle Light Cleric 2/Celestial Bladelock that was our party’s tank. AC 21 (Nat 17 + Shield + Shield of Faith) from lvl1 with efficient self healing was awesome. He venerated the Sun, and Sun granted him power.
Cool build! Would take the medium armor feat for the first ASI. The AC difference is huge. Plus, in case you prioritize summons over the flaming sphere, the casting stat is not super important.
I played your earlier witch warlock build in a one shot the other day, and I had a blast with her! Being able to describe my spells with the voodoo doll made for some really interesting RP. I loved it so much I'm bringing her back as a backup character for my main campaign
Really cool concept. Using reaction for something other than shield is innovative. Couple that with the celestial healing sounds solid. Just about scrolled on when you said celestial instead of hexblade. Glad I stuck around to hear the rest.
I did this as a kobold rogue, who took a 3 level dip into celestial. Because kobolds have pact tactics, and your familiar counts as an ally, you have permanent advantage on attacks, whilst also being able to shrug off most hits. you can also grovel, cower, and beg to give your team advantage until the end of your next turn.
Celestial warlock actually seems pretty amazing to pair with literally any paladin, especially once you get to 10 and 14th levels of warlock and get the very juicy sustainability features of celestial.
Love the Celestial Warlock / Gift of the Ever Living combo! I actually did a build like this but I built it as a Barbarian to up the armor/tankiness a bit, though of course you don't get the real benefits until level 8 when you have 5 Barbarian and 3 Warlock for Gift of the Ever Living. Still, great tip about goliaths, I've been sleeping on their excellent survivability. Here's the build if you're curious: ua-cam.com/video/_mDEph0lwdo/v-deo.html 🙂
I have been playing around with a Celestial Build, and I have found 2 feats that make it OP Inspiring Leader for a daily dose of resource free temp HP and Fey Touched for the Bless Spell
Subbed! I love how fast you get the combo off in this build. I'd be so scared of losing concentration on the sphere. So scared that my version was (he got finger of deatht) a hobgoblin armorer war mage. Waaay longer to come online tho
This build really needs to take the Moderately Armored feature if you aren't multiclassing. Yeah you can soak damage with Stone's Endurance, but you can only do that so many times, especially early levels. Armor of Agathys would be a worthy investment for spells, since it scales, gives you temp HP, and deals damage when hit. Also I wouldn't focus too heavily on melee, given that your only finesse option here is a Dagger if you aren't going Pact of the Blade. You can also cast Sacred Flame at melee range since it's a saving throw.
Heavy Armor Master seems sweet if you're going down the path of maximizing Armor of Agathys and you're taking a dip. If that's Fighter, Second Wind and Stone's Endurance both also reload on short rests with your Warlock spells, proficiency in constitution saves seems really good, and you get a fighting style. Paladin gets you Compelled Duel, but that takes a two level dip, and then you are into Eldricht Mind or Warcaster to boost your concentration.
Im actually playing an Archfey Pact of the Tome Warlock or Voodoo Priest....he has turned into a nice stryker Level 4 Spells Phantasmal Force Armor of Agyths Cloud of Daggers (my Swarm) Tome: Thorn Whip (Scorpion Tail) Primal Savagery She-Lay-Lay Armor of Agythys + Primal Savagery is a nice Combo in melee Thorn Whip and my Swarm (Cloud of Daggers) is a nice combo
A Goliath Celestial-pact Warlock...hmm, all of the combos you mentioned are delicious. I'd want to throw a Mage Slayer feat into this mix and call him a Lich Hunter. Going out, taking on the hordes of undead, fighting the demonspawn, and getting up into the faces of those dark magic users.
I discovered your channel few days ago and I'm hooked since then. You focus more on concept and coolness than broken combos and math (which I hate), so kudos for that. That being said, what I don't like about this builds is the habit to use Point Buy and go 15-15-15-8-8-8. Sure you'll have a powerful character, but how are you going to roleplay having three negative ones? I'd be cool if you could describe how the Ability Point distribution would affect you PC, or at least make characters with less extreme distributions.
Thanks a bunch! I appreciate you letting us know what we’re doing well! You make a good point about the stats. I’ll think about it and make some adjustments.
I'd consider some THP sources for when celestial radiance isn't in effect. Fiendish Vigor may provide some mileage early on. Armor of Agathys is good when you're dealing with melee enemies [probably has better synergy better with earth genasi]. Inspiring leader could be a great feat for this [also improves your familiar's durability to keep the GotELO invocation in effect], same with the healer feat. And Tomb of Levistus is a great panic button if you get nuked/swarmed, Losing a turn while saving your current hp is better than potentially losing a turn and dropping to 0, since generally you're making someone else lose their turn reviving you. Also when strategically deployed, Guardian of Faith can be great. It isn't concentration, lacks friendly 'fire', is less resisted, controls more space, leaves your bonus action free and deals more immediate damage. Also it could be super fun to combo it with repelling blast and grasp of hadar in your repertoire, or even pair that combination with flaming sphere, be the holy shepherd guiding your enemies movement. Bonus points if you have an ally with PAM and/or sentinel reactions. Cloak of Flies invocation could also provide a disincentive to enemies approaching your space. I'd consider 1-3 levels of barbarian, bear totem or ancestral guardian if you go to 3. Alternatively, if your hp is getting low, beast barbarian fang for could help keep you recover or tail to block attacks since stone's endurance is limited. If you take barbarian at level 1 you get medium armor and con save prof, also get shield prof and unarmored defense whenever you take it. Could start with 14 14 14 8 9 16 or 13 14 15 8 9 16. Could attempt to grapple-drag enemy into Guardian of -Space- Faith's AoE. Take tavern brawler for a shield bash attack/unarmed strike followed up with a bonus action grapple-drag. Could flavor it as hooking the enemy with your shepherd's crook. This could be problematic if you also treat the Crook as a quarterstaff/war hammer since you're grappling w/o a free hand, so you may need to ditch the shield if you want to grapple -although that weapon should be effectively shutdown if used in this manner, making this issue largely moot.
Warlock use Warcaster paired with Polearm Master as their reaction to land several eldritch blasts and knock the target away from them, which reduces the damage by a lot more than d12 + Con.
When you said: "Drink some water" I realized that I was very thirsty, so thank you for the remind! Ahahahahha Anyway amazing build as always! I love this type of original build!
So here's a warlock build I had on the back burner for a while. The Shadow Knight. A half-elf woman who cried out for vengeance after the death of her only friend was also a Priests of Anubis. She was presented a long sword to seek out retribution against those who prayed on the weak and maintain the balance of life and death! You can choose whether you want your first level in draconic sorcerer or hexblade Warlock but either way you'll be taking 19 levels in Warlock pact of the blade. Max out charisma first followed by dexterity. Followed by Constitution wisdom intelligence and dumping strength. By the time we're done before magic items you will find out Shield putting your Armor class to 20. But if you ever lose all of your gear you will still have an 18 in your AC and Eldridge blast /pact weapon in back pocket. As far as feats go take gift of the metallic dragon and maybe tough if you've rolled well. And if you want to play the comedic angle you can run her as the Paladin's impulsive and lethal adopted little sister. For a game of good cop / Crazy Cop!
Why the level in draconic sorcerer? Seems not really fitting with the flavor you are going for. Especially since there is the armor of shadows invocation which seems fitting for a shadow knight.
Omg, I just realized a Goliath Path of the Beast Barbarian (tail) would make the right build really difficult to kill. Raise your AC by 1d8 where it’s close, to avoid all damage. Where it’s not close, take the hit but reduce the damage. A great quartet would be a Path of Beast/Peace Cleric; a Bear Totum/Peace Cleric; A Rouge/Fighter w SS; This Warlock
I’ve actually played this style character before. I was a Half-Orc Fighter 1 Chain mail + Shield = 18ac Dueling Fighting Style for more dmg. Then Celestial the rest of the way with basically this exact build
you could always do a first level dip of cleric of life. this gives you access to heavy armour and adds spell level of extra healing as well as 2 first level castings of cure wounds per long rest
Sacred flame actually goes really well with Eldritch blast. The best way to avoid Eldritch blast is cover. Using cover against sacred flame just makes it so you can't fire back.
Celestial warlock is a hugely underrated subclass. Instead of taking booming blade consider taking green flame blade. It benefits from the Celestial warlock level 6 feature. As for warlock's reaction, take warcaster instead of eldritch mind. Use those reactions to swat nearby enemies with green flame blade or booming blade opportunity attacks. If you're multiclassing, 2 levels of paladin gives this character concept a lot of tools. Sticking with warlock after 6 is valid, but going 2 paladin 6 warlock and then dumping the rest of your levels into sorcerer is worth considering. Take dragon bloodline, or the pyromancy sorcerer from the Planeshift Kaladesh pdf, or any sorcerer subclass that catches your eye. Dragon might be a little more tanky. Pyro may deal a little more fire damage.
If you went STR instead of DEX would that make this build worse somehow? I'm thinking heavy armor would make this build more hardy. Also 1 lvl dip in Paladin or Fighter would give it martial weapons proficiency. Paladin would also give it better Saving throws (Wis/Cha) instead of (Str/Con) of Fighter. Also Divine Sense scaling from Cha is more useful than Second Wind that'd heal for 11 HP as a bonus action. But you lose Fighting style, potentially 1 AC
If you want to be as tanky as possible at level 2, before you switch to Gift of the Ever-living Ones, Fiendish Vigor is a good choice 8 temp hp at will at lvl 2 is a huge amount of hp relative to your max
Monsters of the Multiverse Earth Genasi, Resistance Cantrip as a bonus action PB per long rest. 16/8/16/10/10/14 (swap the 8 & 10s whatever way you want). Fighter 1 for Con saves, martial weapon proficiency, heavy armor proficiency & a fighting style. Levels 2 to 20 run Celestial Warlock. Pick up Green Flame Blade & Eldritch Blast as your Cantrips then run Sword/Board or 2H as you see fit. ASIs in order are Strength +2, Charisma +2, Charisma +2, Charisma +2, Constitution +2. Invocations are Agonizing Blast (2), Gift of the Ever Living Ones (3) with the rest of choice/order as you see fit. Charisma does have a good bit of a Delay but your healing from level 3 onwards as well as your high AC, decent HP, 4 to 12 rounds of physical resistance & solid damage makes up for it. By level 20 your melee attacks with a 1D8 weapon casting Green Flame Blade will be dealing 1D8+4+3D8+5 for a total of 4D8+9 hybrid damage (average 27) with a bounce of 3D8+10 (average 23.5).
@@woutvanostaden1299 for sure and then I would bat around the idea of taking durable feat just in case the DM is hip to how many rests players should actually get in a day lol.
@@raymondharnack4160 Huh??? I'm not sure why you would need durable. Wither and bloom allows you to expand a number of hit dice equal to the level by how much you upcast, which is maxed by your familiar and doubled by your periapt and this can be done in the middle of combat. So if it is automatically maxed why would you need a higher average? I very much meant this as mid combat triage. (That you could actually also do if you take a different patron)
@@woutvanostaden1299 ah mb completely forgot about GoEO. That being said sometimes your familiar gets murdered and a back up way to get fat heals could be worth a consideration.
My ravenloft myst walkers character is an human noble son of a minor darklord. He us a warlock undead patron and echo knight fighter with the living shadow dark gift. He is ment to be an in your face using two weapon combat with Hex booming blade and temp HP from the dread form. He has the war caster and sentinel feat
@@DnD_Daily I didn't get into most the flavor but his name is Da' John of the house of Vue. A very French Creo style that is very Modern Vodoo Doctor fell.. Sure thing! Booming Blade does extra damage if they move on their turn and Flaming Sphere does extra damage if they don't move on their turn. So they're taking extra damage whether they choose to move or hold still!
Uh...this build has 15 AC. That isn't even slightly tanky - a basic hexblade has 19 AC (while having access to the shield spell). AC is worth more than HP, because as the percentage of enemy hits decreases, your damage taken is reduced proportionally to 1/AC. For example, an enemy with a +6 to hit is hitting a 15 AC character 60% of the time, whereas that enemy is hitting a 19 AC character 40% of the time. This means that the 15AC character is taking 50% more damage than the 19AC warlock. While this warlock might have more total HP due to goliath, that HP is not going nearly as far as it would on a regular hexblade, where each individual point of HP is basically worth ~50% more. Overall, I do not expect this warlock to live very long, especially since it is melee oriented, has terrible WIS saves, and low survivability. At least, this build should take Moderately Armored at level 4. Seriously, it's one of the most powerful feats in the game, an increase in AC from 15 to 19 is almost equivalent to having the shield spell up permanently (as well as giving you a half-asi!). People need to take it more often.
Fair, but the health does help. I'd suggest picking up Armor of Agathys, which has great synergies with your stone's endurance and makes your lower AC something of an advantage, since you only proc the damage if you get hit. take a level dip in Cleric to start for your Wisdom saves, martial weapon proficiency (medium armor and shields if the AC is still bothering you) and whatever cool or flaverfull domain ability you want.
I love cleric dipping on my warlocks fr fr. Problem with AoA's that it might eat up too many spell slots, you really don't have too many on a warlock. Also AoA doing only damage to melee enemies is a bit sad imo i wish it worked on ranged ones too :(
@@hrcarinae3625 In this case (wishing AoA working on ranged), while we would than be unable take goliath, if pick wild hunt shifter (maybe also pick up the athlete feat) you can play around with prone, now they have to come to play (with you in melee) (I know the temp hp is akward). Just a fun idea, also if you have the stats reckless barb is right around the corner.
Why Dex-based weapons? Because of armor proficiencies? There are ways to mitigate that. I always find it weird when people choose a race and then play against type. Goliaths are known for their strength and durability, not their agility or speed. What does that even look like? A tall grey basketball player type? High Dex, low Str? I just don't understand the push for Dex builds all the time. Goliaths don't get racial proficiencies in finesse weapons and neither do warlocks. You're going Pact of the Chain, so where are you getting your finesse weapon proficiency? (I rewatched the video to see if I missed something and I didn't.) Are you using a dagger? Now for my confession. My Str based version also is confined to simple weapons because I didn't think of it either. So weapon damage is stuck at d6 for mace or handaxe. And I'm using an ASI (@ 4th lvl most likely) to grab the medium armored feat for medium armor and shields proficiency as well as a +1 to Str or Dex. The rest of my ASIs are needed to boost Cha or Con.
When younger the Goliath trying learn more about his heritage, sets off to a mountain that used to be considered sacred amongst stone giants until it was abandoned, but no one is sure why. Sadly, this one doesnt work as gift of the ever living ones triggers off rolling dice to regain hit points, and vampiric touch rolls damage dice but gives hitpoints equal to the damage. But a friendly DM might well just let you roll for the damage but get the max possible heal, because it seems fitting.

you could always do a first level dip of cleric of life. this gives you access to heavy armour and adds spell level of extra healing as well as 2 first level castings of cure wounds per long rest
Or Tempest. You probably get wrath of the storm twice a day and storm gods just feel kind of right for goliaths.
Pyro may deal a little more fire damage.
two levels of pally makes this build MAD as hell
If you went STR instead of DEX would that make this build worse somehow? I'm thinking heavy armor would make this build more hardy. Also 1 lvl dip in Paladin or Fighter would give it martial weapons proficiency. Paladin would also give it better Saving throws (Wis/Cha) instead of (Str/Con) of Fighter.
Also Divine Sense scaling from Cha is more useful than Second Wind that'd heal for 11 HP as a bonus action. But you lose Fighting style, potentially 1 AC
If you want to be as tanky as possible at level 2, before you switch to Gift of the Ever-living Ones, Fiendish Vigor is a good choice
8 temp hp at will at lvl 2 is a huge amount of hp relative to your max
0:51 "What are they gonna do? hit you with a stick?" There is always ghostlance ya know
Ghostlance?
I'm currently playing an aaracokra celestial warlock gonna go pact of the tome. He's striving to become a champion of Keranos.
Hellish Rebuke is a pretty iconic warlock reaction.
How to fluster your dm 101! Lol
☕️
Man do I love a periapt of wound closure for this build.
If you get 1 then this makes wither and bloom also fun to use.
@@raymondharnack4160 That's why you pick up flock of familiars. Now you have multiple invisible familiars.
Sounds like a ton of fun, packed full of flavor!
@@DnD_Daily I didn't get into most the flavor but his name is Da' John of the house of Vue. A very French Creo style that is very Modern Vodoo Doctor fell.. Dark Lord is his distant Grandfather the first Lord Da' John of the house of Vue. Who make a pact with We Jus from Greyhawk godess of Infactuation love dark magic and undeath. He was jealous of his grandson Da'John the third so on his wedding night he took the Dark Gift to become a demi lich and took Da John the younger body and bride for his own. Unknown to anyone Da John the younger had gotten a bar made pregnant which he was a blessing and doomed the boy. The odd familiarity of the Lord's Vue has everyone a feeling of dajavue be cause the lord Vue seems to be so strikingly like his sire. My character is the one who survived the attack and is now on the run from his lord but the bond was started. So his Patron is his Grandfather his Lord, his Attacker and hopefully not his death
TBH, I like the idea of this being an Orc, using death ward, and pact of the tome to have 3 ways to not die at 0 lol
Bruh, i been playing this but as a harrengon for the dash disengage in sticky situations
I kinda did this in the campaign im playing in but I'm using pact of the blade and mulity classing with path of the zealot barbarian its been fun 😄
could you please explain the flaming sphere, mobile, booming blade combo please
Sure thing! Booming Blade does extra damage if they move on their turn and Flaming Sphere does extra damage if they don't move on their turn. So they're taking extra damage whether they choose to move or hold still!
Brilliant thanks again
The only caveat here, is of course that they don't activate any anti-magic, teleport out or have an imunnity to either damage type.
How are you getting proficiency in finesse weapons to use dex?
Good Catch! In that case you'd most likely use a dagger instead of a Rapier, or you'd have to take 1 level in something like Fighter
creative build indeed, what finesse weapon would you suggest
The Dagger is the only simple finesse weapon so we have to use it by default.
Could you use a rapier instead and thanks so much for the reply I really like this build
@@darricklucas7033 Only if you can find a way to become proficient in it or have a very kind DM!
Hellish rebuke is a reaction
Curious why no armor of agathys at level 1?
❤️
I am late to the party. Has anyone tried this build and how was it?
@@woutvanostaden1299 jesse wtf are you talking about
@@woutvanostaden1299 like, i literally do not understand what you are saying. can you please clarify?
Anyone else check their play speed in confusion?
This video feels so unnatural.
