Anxiety before surgery is very common, same it can lead to a panic attack if it goes untreated! Surgery or not, patients can learn to overcome anxiety and prevent dangerous panic attacks that can lead to the emergency room.
Prevention is key, because it's always easier to quench a small anxiety reaction versus a full blown panic attack. This is where the introspective tricks work! Figuring out where the anxiety is in your body is the first step to controlling it
Expectations and certainty are important antidotes to anxiety, and this is where the anxiety spiral can be aborted.
Curiosity is also powerful to overcome anxiety, and the Yoda humming trick works great with that!
Once a panic attack sets in, patients need more intense interventions, typically. Valsalva, biofeedback, and other tricks can help, but they can be harder to implement when the panic sets in.
I also answer many questions that come in the stream, about reducing fear before surgery, labor and delivery, and much more.
    Keep learning!

My first surgery I had a panic attack. I was yelled at to calm down, strapped to the table and had the mask shoved on my face which made it worse. Luckily my second surgery was much better. Much more relaxed. Much more information. The anisteseologist was much more willing to talk. I am so thankful for those of you that are good.

The extreme ignorance of a doctor responding to you having a panic attack by yelling “Calm down!” and then strapping you to the table and shoving the mask on your face must have been so traumatizing. As a psychotherapist, my heart breaks for you. Fortunately, you have resilience and were able to make sure that when you had surgery again, you advocated for yourself and you had a wonderful anesthesiologist who was willing to listen to you and answer your questions.❤️🧚🏻‍♀️🩵

For the record I suffer from the most severe case of medical anxiety aka hypochondriac here. I can’t walk into a hospital without throwing up, yup I know totally crazy. You are seriously the first medical video that I can sit down and watch and not go into a full blown panic attack. Thank you for these videos, helps calm the nerves a bit.

I'm only a few minutes into the video but memories are already coming back from going to the emergency room for the first (and only) time. Having to be in a hospital gown and feeling completely exposed, the constant beeping sounds and blood pressure band hurting my arm I was constantly on edge. My heart rate was a resting 160 the whole time. The woman who was going to put my IV in walked in the room and I started sobbing. I've never been more afraid in my entire life.
She was incredibly sweet and got the IV hooked up on the first try which I still thank God for to this day. I eventually want to have children and I know hospital visits will be frequent with that. I'm trying to mentally prepare. Medical anxiety is so surreal

Go through your senses. Look. Name something you see. Smell. Name something you smell. Listen. Name something you can hear. Feel. Name something you can touch.
Focus on the things you name.
Sometimes I repeat “Just wait. Just wait. Don’t do anything. Just wait. I repeat until the chemicals flooding my body have a chance to dissipate.

This is a very common tactic for use with anxiety states outside of an operating room. It will likely not work in an operating room situation. 1) the anxiety Is much greater 2) you will likely be out before you can arrange your brain to do these things. 3) it is simply not useful in a surgical suite.

I taught at a HS that focused on trauma because our kids lived in high poverty, high crime areas. We had one student kill another during passing time. We started to teach breathing to lower anxiety. COVID stopped us from practicing, so we stopped. I don’t have data or more info at this time to tell you how effective it was.

Just found your videos. Have been dealing with some medical anxiety while awaiting test results and possible pending surgery. I've had surgery before-one under general, and one nerve block, but I was much younger. I think my anxiety is from realizing that both these surgeries happened when I was much younger, and before having some struggles with my mental health. I've also trained professionally in a lot of ways somatically, and in breath & mindfulness, and I still have difficulty integrating. Thank you so much for the evidence-based reminder that my years of training will help me through this. It has really helped.

Just watching this video brought on anxiety 😢. When I was two in 1957 I stepped on a needle which lodged in the bone and needed hospitalization and surgery with ETHER as the anesthesia. I remember literally everything about it-the hospital stay, the crib, the doctor with the light on his forehead, being wheeled into the OR, the family visitors, how sick I got from the ether. It has traumatized me since to any medical environment or procedure.

I do have HBP, but going through my medical clearance physical exam, I had a high reading. Then doc said he wouldn't be able to clear me for my elective procedure, which made it go higher, then drew blood and guy put on just a Band-Aid, so when I bent my arm blood gushed out and onto the floor all down my arm. BP went even higher. I'm not afraid of the surgery, just getting my BP controlled so not have to cancel surgery. On last hip surgery, I could hear the sawing. I spoke in my mind and cracked some jokes. Don't know if they heard me. Another surgery I prayed as I went under, woke up in the same prayer. Didn't think surgery even started. I'll be rewatching this and your other videos before my surgery in one month.

How cool!! Now I get it. Recently I went in for lense replacement surgery "I know I know, big deal right".. but unfortunately I had to lay on that bed in the surgery center for like a full hour, waiting and listening to the heart monitor I was on. I noticed how much the beeping fluctuated every time I moved. Didn't matter if I moved my foot, my hand, whatever. Even I noticed it seemed to fluctuate fairly dramatically when I would simply breathe! Lol, I remember laying there thinking " this machine is gonna drive me nuts, lol. However tge simple thought or curiosity "genuine curiosity "or interest I took in the things that were going on around me, seemed to have a calming effect on me! Next thing I know I was being helped into the car by my wife and headed home lol, love the feeling of waking up not knowing ANYTHING that happened, no recollection of the procedure whatsoever.

It's none of what you have demonstrated per se, that causes anxiety in me. Hard to describe, and not sure if this is a memory of a dream, etc., but my fear that would prevent me from sleeping the night before would be fear of feeling as though anesthesia would put me in an "Alice of Wonderland" state in which I could not find my way back through the "looking glass." Rational me knows better, but anxiety can override that.

I'm going to keep saying this: Just talk to your patients, tell them what you're going to do BEFORE you do it in the OR. Never come up behind them and put the mask over their face without letting them know it's what you're going to do. I think women are more uncomfortable with that than men. Do you intubate everyone during surgery?

Desensitization might help. Start by just thinking about it. Use the relaxation breathing, that Dr. Kaveh has been talking about. Then, look at the word, needle, then a photo, then a video, a little at a time. Good luck with that. You can get used to it, so it won't bother you, much, anymore.

How do you get your scrubs to cover your angel wings? I think they come out of your vagus nerve, but that's because I'm not a scientist. I'm a poet with an as-yet unexplored colon (and, uh, that tube is quivering with a lot more than peristalsis right now).

I know rationally I am fine and I won't die or anything but I have surgery in about an hour to remove an ovarian cyst and I'm terrified. I'm 16 and I'm crying my eyes out like a baby and I'm doing that annoying breathing thing where you gasp while you cry.

I fear Friday is going to be a nightmare. I have severe gymnophobia, but have to go through a pantsless procedure.... I'm already getting anxiety attacks that feel almost as bad as you do while having a heart attack... I am a nightmare for anesthesia too probably ASA3 or 4, heart disease/failure/COPD/ apnea..... and I use your friend THC for managing many of my medical problems making me restant to drugs... Like (I've been at is so long, Snoop Dog couldn't put me to shame). I've had many surgeries when I was younger, but always with underpants... I already see myself running out of the room with my gown flapping open behind me... I'm afraid I can't do hhhmmmmmmppp while knowing nothing is changing. I feel so trapped. PS, just press volume down on ringing phone to mute the ringtone for that call.

I think trying to activate your vagus nerve when you have autonomic neuropathy has the opposite effect though.

As the anesthesiologist started to cover my face with the mask he said relax and breathe the oxygen. I knew full well what was coming and it didn't smell like any oxygen I have ever smelled. I wonder why he didn't just tell me the truth because I told him that's not oxygen, that stinks. His reply was that it was because it was a new kind of mask. 🤥😴
