    As a closeted Japanese enby who came to realise my identity as late as in the early 30s I couldn't appreciate this more. Feels like a breath of fresh air since nb identities are still super underrepresented among the Japanese ppl and in Western media coverage of Japan as well.

    You guys keep leveling up! This video resonates with me as a nonbinary individual living in Tokyo. I'm so used to being mistaken for male or female and being stared at on the street... however the discrimination I've experienced from the queer community here in Japan because of my gender expression has been the worst. I think it's based on the belief that there are limited and distinct forms of expression that are seen as acceptable or even attractive.
    It's such an honour meeting Nao and listening to their take on the TGNC community in Japan. People are complicated and matters around identity, expression and orientation have divided opinions. I think there is never one argument is better than the other...the way you experience your gender is uniquely personal this questions like "what is a woman?" "what is beauty?" or "What is the correct gayness?" Shouldn't be standardized or based on stereotypes.

    • @TokyoBTM

      I think the conversation is finally happening here, especially now that even famous Japanese musicians are coming out as nonbinary! But yeah, I can imagine how you must still frustrated on a daily basis here. Here's to hoping it will get better!

    You guys have no idea how much I love it when you have guests and interview them as in a talk show like this. And can we talk about the diversity? You're always putting the spotlight on people who might otherwise not get that much visibility. That's super important that you're using your platform to give a voice to other segments of our community and empower them. I love this channel, thank you SO MUCH for all that you do.
    P.S: I can't even begin to imagine how hard must it be to translate and subtitle these videos, so wow, congrats for doing all that. ❤️

    Another homerun you guys. I really appreciated this as someone who has had questions, but you know a person isn't a search engine. So I'd feel rude to ask them to sort of describe and give me like a lecture on their entire community. Cause that isn't their job and a single person's experience isn't everyone in that community's experience. So they have every right to tell me to go pick up a book, but Nao handled it so beautifully and I feel more educated in a way(?) If that makes sense. So a thank you to her.
    There's a part of me that chuckled imagining that the "new-half" terminology is a play on Gundam's "new types" the next stage in human evolution.
    Totally right about the discrimination in our community, and sad when a persecuted minority begins to act like the bigoted majority. We should understand that feeling. So how can we subject others to it? I was super surprised the first time I spoke to a racist gay dude who didn't know I was black! It was such a major "does not compute" moment in my young at the time life.

    Looking at the rates, that's really good for anywhere in the world! I am uncomfortable with people thinking my body is one thing or another, or I'm removing it for one reason or another (seriously, maybe I'm not removing hair for sex and it's just uncomfortable for me is something I worry about people judging) so if I were in Japan, this would be the place I went first. Please keep up the non-judgment, there must be a lot of people like me out there.

    I am not sure if labels help the community I respect them, I mean be who you want to be do whatever you want. My experience the last few years I feel like I dont belong anywhere. I remember when I was in London gay pride it was divided in so many groups. I am a gay men I was trying to celebrate with everyone but the Non binary, the Bi, Tran, Lesbian all this groups and many more, in the gay pride. The told me that "you dont belong here". That broke my heart... So many years of fighting to be me and my own community puss me away that day change everything for me. Even with gays Is always are you a 🐻, are you an otter, are a twing. No I am dinosaur, survived the distraction of my own "world" coming out to my family as gay, in a country that easily killed(by law) you for that. Moving like a refuge in another country, and looking for people to connect.... and that is apparently the hardest thing

    • @aiutoo418
      @aiutoo418 3 роки тому +6

      I kinda had the same experience and i find that pretty stupid. We as a community should stick together. I mean, it’s awesome if there are more groups but they shouldn’t stay for themselves. In my group of friends there are straight, bi, queer people and me, which I’m non binary demisexual. We always celebrate any member of the group because we think that the nature of the humans is wonderfully varied and any kind of human being should be loved 🥰

      That really sucks to hear :( I'm kind of glad I never got sorted into the whole bear/otter/twink thing, even tho it may have happened under my radar. There's nothing wrong with self-id but it's just rude to deny people because they may not fully align to your group - I've done that before, *but* you can at least point into directions where the person might find what they're looking for - that's community care.
      Hope you find a nice community that accepts you as you are some day.

The more videos I watch from you guys the more I learn, also we tend to see Japan as conservative country but actually I see it as very progressive country. Nao, you are beautiful! I wish you success with your two careers.
    There is prejudice in the gay community, but I don't want to isolate people as "good" gays and "bad" gays. I think an analogy can be made here with the sort of prejudice that used to divide the Black community between those who were lighter-skinned and those who were darker skinned, which was pretty obviously in hindsight an internalized prejudice coming from white oppression. I think we can learn from this not to attack each other, as Blacks have learned not to turn against each other, to recognize the different ways bigotry causes the oppressed to oppress themselves, and to course-correct.
    Gays grow up with all sorts of nonsense thrown at them: "Oh, you're just going through a phase!" "Homosexuality is a case of arrested development; 'mature' adults embrace a heterosexual identity." "All these out gay people are confusing the young about their true sexual identity." "Gay men want to be women."
    And what happens? A lot of us turn around and throw this same nonsense at trans people: dysmorphia." "Confused cis kids are going to see trans people and think they themselves are trans." "I didn't want to accept that I was gay and I pretended I was straight, and that means you don't want to accept you're gay and are pretending you really belong to the opposite sex."
    We--and now I mean humanity, not just the gay community--need to get rid of our fear of differences. It probably all goes back to the caveman (caveperson?) days, and the sense that anyone or anything that is not us is a threat to us. That, to me, is probably the core of all prejudice, this basic fear that differences threaten our existence. Unchecked, the awful, rippling effects of that fear mutate in various directions. We have to eradicate that fear.
    Thank you, Meng and Andrew, for helping to make the world a more affirming place with videos like this. And thank you to Nao for helping us understand another segment of our community!

    as an NB foreigner who medically transitioned in Japan (and finally couldn't in Japan because of all the medical gatekeeping so had to do that in Thailand) I long for the day we can finally register an X/その他/etc marker in our legal documents. I have tried to search for information of someone who lives in Japan with a different mark on their passports but I haven't found anything at the time of this comment (is there really absolutely no one living in Japan with a different marker from other countries? I know X and O have existed for years, how come no one like that has come to live in Japan before??). My big concern would be what happens if I manage to register my new mark on my country (so passport marker gets X marker) but Japanese documents only have two options, is there someone in the same situation? will I just get deported for incongruence in my documents? I wouldn't be surprised

    lol, just days ago I was having a discussion with friends on difference between cross dresser, trans and drag queen
    at least in my definition
    cross dressers are those who dress up and make up into another gender for whatever reasons
    drag queens are those who dress up and make up into women to perform as an entertainer
    trans are those who go through surgery to change the gender to the opposite gender
    learning new stuff about "new half" today~
    but my friends and I don't have a conclusion on transgender sexuality
    e.g. for a transgender woman... once transition is done... she is considered as a woman...
    so if she likes men... that isn't exactly homosexual... right?
    don't get me wrong, she is still part of the LGBTQ community but she is not gay as she is now physically a woman...
    unless she likes women onward... i'm still so confused...

    • @troysierra5228
      @troysierra5228 3 роки тому +2

      I hate to chime in. People that are attracted to transgendered, are pansexual.
      People that are attracted to opposite sex are heterosexual.
      People that are attracted to both sexes. With those people they are attracted to, living their birth sex. Are called bisexuals.
      People that are attracted to the same sex. Are called homosexuals, or lesbians (if it's woman with woman).
      People that are attracted to people living the opposite sex that they weren't born. Either in translation or post surgery. Their spouses would be called pansexual. Because they represent a combination of everybody.

      Never really understood what pansexual means. Now that with example makes it much easier to understand

    • @satanichippo
      @satanichippo 3 роки тому

      @@troysierra5228 Nope, bi and straight people can be attracted to trans people too. Bi people can definitely be attracted to non binary people! Bisexual means you are attracted to two or more 'genders', while pan just means all. Straight people are usually attracted to binary trans people though. Also sex and gender can actually both be fluid, so who cares what label you use, just choose the one you are most comfortable with!

    • @troysierra5228
      @troysierra5228 3 роки тому +1

      @@satanichippo WHERE DO YOU BELONGING WITHIN THE LGBTQIA community. I'm tired of fakes speaking for the rest of us!
      Just to make it very clear:
      You wouldn't be heterosexual, if your attraction was of the same sex. That would make you homosexual!
      You wouldn't be bisexual. If the same sex or opposite sex, you're attractive to is in transition of the other sex. That would make you Pansexual!
      Dual attraction to both sexes (male and female). Makes you bisexual if they remained true to their gender. People in transition (transgendered), because they are renaming themselves physically and emotionally. Anybody attractive to them would be pansexual.
      People strictly into the other sex. Would make them heterosexual.
