I LOVE BIBLES! my favorite translation is the NKJV but I also use esv, nlt, & csb !
Haha I love that! I feel so blessed to have the ability to own multiple Bibles ❤️
@franceeee
I also enjoy the NLT and have used a Living Bible from my early days as a Christian..
You should look at the channel Bible Believing Christian, her channel is nothing but Bible reviews and they’re awesome.
I have soooo many bibles!!! I buy them a lot at thrift stores! My oldest is from 1895!!!
I’m glad I’m not the only one! ☺️
I use the NIV and KJV translation, but I love the NKJV, ESV and the NLT translations.
That is so special you have your great grandmas bible 🥺 I’m so happy it went into good hands ❤️
You can have your Bible rebound and recovered. There are several people who do it & then it won’t be dropping bits, but you can still use it.
I love that you have your grandmothers bible , that’s is very beautiful especially with her notes written in , it’s something that I want to do for my children’s child someday
Love this! My favs are the ESV, NIV, NKJV!
I completely agree with your perspective on the paraphrase "translations" as they are more of a commentary rather than a translation. However when it comes to word for word & more dynamic equivalents, please remember that word for word does not necessarily mean more accurate. That's not what it means at all. Word for word simply means that they took a sentence for example and translated each Greek/Hebrew word for the English word in the exact order in which it was placed in the original text. Here is the issue with that, no two languages use the same sentence/grammar structures. That's why sometimes when reading a NASB or KJV the reading is very clunky as the order of the words don't make sense for English grammar structure. Also there are going to be words in one language that don't have a translator word replacement in the other language. Also two languages aren't going to always have the same verbs/adjectives etc. KJV is simply just one of the first English translations we did but at the end of the day it is just that a "translation" and no two will ever be exact to a "T". It is simply impossible. There's no way translate perfectly two different languages. Dynamic equivalents are just as reliable to read God's word. I know this comment is lengthy but I really feel in my heart sometimes that these categories are misunderstood and I would never want to steer someone away from coming to Jesus because they think that they only have to read KJV or they won't really be reading the bible. That couldn't be farther from the truth.
I don’t feel I led anyone away from God’s word, especially since I gave as many helpful resources as I could!
Nor do I fall into the “KJV only” group, I don’t even read from KJV for the very reasons you stated above!
@@_KendraChristine Oh no honey, I don't think you are trying to scare anyone away from the word. I should have said word for word translations rather than just singling KJV out. I was just using that for an example. Just because someone reads translations closer to the word for word side of the spectrum, doesn't mean they are receiving a more accurate meaning of God's word. If anything the format will read more "off" as to what they meant in Hebrew/Greek (I don't mean wrong when I say off), because in English we don't place words in the same order as say the Greeks/Hebrews would. Dynamic Equivalents take the original manuscripts and place the words in English in the order as we would in our grammar structure, while still giving us what they meant in their language. I didn't mean any harm or negativity, I just think it's important that new believers understand what word for word and thought for thought actually means. I know when I first started studying, I thought word for word actually meant it was a more true to God's word, when it actually means true to word placement as the original text. Big Difference.
I’m not disagreeing! I definitely know what you mean, with any translation between languages things will get lost or misrepresented! That’s why I think the literal word app is so helpful because you can take any of your translations and compare it to the original language.
Awesome collection, thank you for sharing 😀
Awh, I love that you have your great grandmother’s Bible. I have my great grandmother’s Bible too. She passed away before I was born, but just like you I love going back through it. ❤
I agree. Thank you for explaining with love! I am also a NKJV gal. It’s my favorite. I love the The Woman’s Study Bible ❤
I love your first quote from the whole video
Your grandma's Bible ❤️❤️❤️!! so beautiful. I have my grandma ( and grandad's) Bible too, so precious X
Love it❤️
The NKJV is my favorite as well. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video and I have subscribed.
I like what you had to say, God bless and continue to study the word and carry that sWORD!
Thank you!
I have my grandmother's and grandfather's bibles from the late 1880s. My grandma always cut out articles from new papers and tucked them into placed with specific verses, and all of those cuttings are still in the bible. It's priceless to me.
I love that!❤️
I would love love love to see a video of flipthroughs of them
I LOVED this video! It gave me a lot of good insight, and I totally agree about the message translation… It is hard for me when people who are getting into reading the Bible read the message, because like you were saying it is a thought for thought and not actually how the Bible was intended to be read, and I will definitely be looking into the John MacArthur study Bible!
thanks Ava!! :)
I’ve got the downloaded version of the MacArthur study Bible and I and others I know who have it are having problems with it. Namely, when you start scrolling, you’ll end up in another book. I’ve had it for a while and it’s not been fixed. So I would stick with the hard or soft cover editions.
Oh my goodness, run far, far away from the Message and the Passion "Bibles" haha it's complete heresy!
But NASB, KJV, NKJV, and CSB are more word for word...NIV and NLT are slightly more thought for thought.
Great video! I really enjoyed it! God bless!
Loved this! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Tina!!
I love you Kendra. Love your bravery and boldness. Your concise and clarity around communicating. I'll be honest I love the Passion Translation also The Message. I feel it's helped me fall Inlove with God like no other version.. I feel that the Paraphrased versions may very well be God inspired for a modern day generation. Just my perception, also sharing in love. But will definitely look at some older versions as from what I know there are so many historical gems and revelations!!
I appreciate you sharing in love!❤️🙏🏻
Thank you! You could consider getting your old red bible rebound. I know a friend who did this and it's wonderful! Like new, but all the goodies inside are still to be treasure. XX
Yes, or wrap it’s cover in something more sturdy
So many Bible-reading people from across the Pond! ❤😊 This makes me emotional, thank you, Jesus!!!
I’m doing a study right now where I’m looking at different bibles and comparing their verses. Plus looking up the Greek/Hebrew words to see how they compare to the translations. I’m doing KJV, NKJV, ESV and NIV. It’s very interesting so far!
That sounds awesome!
I love the KJV translation! I love that you have her old bible:) That is SO wonderful to have.
My mom still has her bible that her parents bought her when she was a little girl. Its all torn and worn out but she still keeps it on her shelf, and bought a huge family bible to read. Her favorite part about her bible is the red letters.
Love that!!
I'm glad u touched on the Bible translation. I stay away from thought for thought translations. I used to be king james only. But I like to cross reference all the word for word translations.
Love ur bible collection! I have a small bible collection but just want 2 more and I'll be ok lol I all my travel / pocket bibles are KJV (3). Devotional bible that's ESV. I got a journaling bible that's NASB. I want to get a NKJV and a CSB. Mt first bible was a niv and once I found out it was not a good translations I gave it away and got a KJV.
Hi Kendra. Amen on John MacArthur Study Bible!! My Husband of 58 years, our Daughter, and our four Granddaughters all have his Study Bible and we’ve all been blessed by his teaching! I also love C.H SPURGEON! You did a great job on the false translations! Blessings and Prayers to you and your Husband!
Kendra can you tell me where the NIV small Bible came from?
The pink and brown
I totally agree with your opinion on translation. The message actually uses occult terminology in some of his paraphrasing.
I agree overall in preferring more literal translations (my main ones are the ESV and RSV) -- and I really recommend taking courses in the biblical languages for anyone who is able -- though I do think more "dynamic" ones like the NLT have their place as secondary resources. Since there's no exact word-to-word correspondence between any 2 languages, there's always going to be some degree of paraphrasing, and it's a balancing act.
For sure, I completely agree!
Yes girl I love Spurgeon and MacArthur😊Great recommendations!!! And yay the app made it in time haha😂It’s so so good!
Yes!! Thank you!!
@@_KendraChristine I just wanted to pop in here and say your red NKJV is a lot like the bible I have had for many years (it's also been through rainstorms on hikes with me it has amazing memories and scribble notes throughout).. and reminds me of a song that Cliff Richard sang called "I Love" (written by Wall & Wild) which has these lyrics in it..
"And I love to see a bible that's been well used
'cos when a bible's well used the devil's not amused."
Even though I have almost every modern translation and the KJV, the NIV is still my favorite translation and he one I read every day. I sometimes alternate between the NIV and the ESV which are my two favorite translations. I use all the other versions when I do in depth studying of particular books and as reference.
Thank God for your grandma. Like her, I started on the KJV since the 1960's and still use it. I did read the top five translations. But I keep going back to the KJV for many reasons. I've put in thousands of hours studying the Textual issue. I read my bible daily. Rarely do I use study bibles. Keep reading your bible, putting God first in everything you do. God bless you with a happy life full of wisdom.
I love the niv NLT or the nkjv
I use both literal and dynamic translations. I find using both types side by side can help me understand things I struggle to understand. I don't use a paraphrase.
Thank you for sharing! I also use NKJV regularly! However I found out while studying and comparing to KJV the order in which the sentences were written in KJV sometimes are changed in the NKJV which throws the meaning off. Even where the punctuation are placed as well. So now I use both NKJV and KJV together when studying. I've found issues with NIV, passion, ESV and I think the message isn't good either. The amplified version is too bad but I stay clear from it .
Of course! Thanks for sharing as well and for watching!
Thank for This video. I have several Bible I use for studying but I don’t have a NKJV yet.
Which one is your go-to? :)
Last year I read the NKJV and this year I'm reading CSB, and I also think they're very similar.
Yeah, I really like them both!!
God bless you 💕🙏🏾
I would also mention that I prefer the NIV to the NKVJ. I point to the NIV Grace and Truth Bible as a better alternative to the JMSB. Blessings. MikeInMinnesota
You are absolutely right on having discernment regarding bible translations... check out Halleluyah Scriptures version...
The CSB is what I use most now. I used to be a NASB girl because it’s so close to the original text. But when I researched it, the CSB was one step more “readable” than the NASB. Also, the Message gets a point because Peterson has said in interviews that it shouldn’t be used as someone’s Bible, preached, or studied from (as opposed to what Simmons claims about the Passion🤦♀️). When I was first getting into the Word as a high schooler, I actually had a side-by-side NASB and Message that was so helpful. A word-for-word right next to that expanded paraphrase really helped me get my Biblical “sea legs”😆 I LOVED this video, btw!
I’m loving the CSB! I haven’t read much from the NASB but my church growing up used that translation a lot! So glad you loved the video!!!
Oh, great! After watching this video and reading your comment, I HAVE to get a CSB to go along with all my other Bibles. I can already see my wife's eyes rolling.😄 Despite owning far more Bibles than a normal person (I have a problem-haha), I've never owned a CSB. I'm with you with the NASB. It and the ESV are the first I reach for.
i recently started using the CSB, i watched a review and heard that it's a perfect middle ground of accuracy and readability, after just a couple of days of using it on my phone i ordered a CSB study bible, i'm hoping it comes in soon
@@jb-lf4yq I can attest that it's great! A lot of charts/reviews list it closer to thought-for-thought, but in comparison with my NASB, I'd really have to disagree. Either way, it's awesome.
@@_KendraChristine what church/denomination are you part of?
Love Spurgeon and MacArthur
I Love John Macarthur Study Bible I bought one for my self The NKV Last Year
I have a very old bible too it was my ex mother in laws family bible. My ex didn't want it so I kept it safe. It has beautiful illustrations in it. It's also falling apart it's a hardcover and the front cover fell off but on occasion I love to look through it.
Nice collection
Kendra, cover your most marked up Bible in cellophane or some beautiful wrapping paper as the treasured gift it is.
Tabbed.. great tip!
I love NIV and King James translations
Literal word and blue letter Bible are great!
I'm not a native english speaker but I can speak, read and understand it fluently. I'm using english language bibles because they are the easiest available. The app you mentioned is great because it helps me do the research.
I have an ESV compact Bible definitely want to get back in that one, I had it in 5th grade but idk
And I have an NIV journaling Bible I take notes in and a journal
My sister also had the NASB MacArthur Bible, she never uses it, so I use it lol 😂
NASB, ESV, CSB and NLT. NASB gives me the most literal and accurate (IMO) translation. The others are good companion study tools.
I tend to recommend the NKJV, or ESV for serious study, the CSB for general reading and for brand new Christians or purely devotional reading the NLT. The NIV is still the most popular and is a decent option as well. Despite what was said in the video the top selling translation are all good for certain things, but I must totally agree that people should avoid niche translations or paraphrases unless they know exactly what they are getting into and have a solid reason for doing so.
The differences in bible translations can be frustrating. cuz you might like some verses in one translation while you might like other verses in another.some times I think we have to many versions So it's like ahhh...lol but the csb is a fun bible to read i hope it does really well and a lot of people get in to it
What's scary is there are pastors who predominantly use The Message translation for their sermons. If I'm not badly mistaken, even Eugene Peterson himself said it was never meant to be used in such a way. Oh, churches today. 🙄 Anyway, my wife jokes that I have a Bible problem, because I buy them like she buys purses. 🤣 Only bad thing about it is having to highlight the same verse 20+ times. Go through highlighters like crazy.
Hats off to you for highlighting in them all 😂 I haven’t done any of that in my study Bibles cause I know once I start…. It’s gonna be a long journey of highlighting and underlining again 😂🙏🏻
@@_KendraChristine I'd like to say all of the highlighting is due to my dedication to the Word, but have to admit it might be undiagnosed OCD. 😅
@@GalathNox wow, so true. I’m the same way hahaha
The Message is not a translation because there are unjustifiable words in The Message which are not in the manuscripts.
@@chuck9333 Right, because it's just a long, drawn-out paraphrase.
Great video! Watch out for the passion translation too!
Oof, definitely!
Anytime a person claims special revelation, as Brian Simmons did, RUN! HIDE!
Loved this! I currently use the NIV translation as my main Bible (being a new Christian, it is pretty easy to read). However, I am thinking of also checking out other translations. I just don’t want to find it confusing though. So I guess right now I’m contemplating whether I should get a study Bible, or just an ordinary bible haha.
Kendra, what is your advice on this, and what would be the best way to understand the Bible? 😅😄😊
Such a good question!! And I think study Bibles can be so helpful! Especially the John MacArthur one because if you get confused about a certain verse, he will address it and tell you what it means with context and cultural things! The Spurgeon study Bible is a little different because it doesn’t address every single verse, but only a few verses here and there. I just checked Amazon and John MacArthur has an NIV study Bible! That one would probably be perfect for you!!
@@_KendraChristine okay! Thank you so much! 😊🙏
@@_KendraChristine Btw, Do you think a commentary would be good?? I’m contemplating this as well, but I want to choose one that is reputable and faithful to scripture..? 😆
Commentaries are great!! I recommend the Enduring Word app!! And it’s free :)
You can have the cover replaced on the NKJV.
Use some leather conditioner to preserve the leather, it will soften the leather and rehydrate it.
Bibles I use KJV, ESV, NKJV, NASB
Love those translations!
KJV, NKJV, ESV, NASB, and just recently the CSB, in this order. I own the NIV because I follow a Pastor who uses that version to preach from. I prefer to use the version of the Bible the Pastors I follow use because it makes it easier for me to follow along. With one exception, all of my Bibles are Study Bibles. Only my NIV is a readers Bible because I don't use it as a reference tool. I'm still adjusting to the CSB, but the Study notes in the Bible I purchased are great. I have watched many Bible reviewers for years now and I have discovered that few have deep knowledge of the translations. Reviewers who are Pastors are far more knowledgeable, but are often biased by their denomination. However, I prefer getting a review from someone who has studied Hebrew and Greek and also the culture of the times. I once had a Pastor who said that any version of the Bible YOU will read is the best one for YOU. Had I known then what I know now, I would have respectfully disagreed.
When you got rid of Bibles what did you do with them? Like where did they go?
What is your thoughts on the ESV?
You can have it rebound too
On your red NKJV your daddy got you, that's falling apart, wrap it in clear contact shelf paper. I had a wife do that to some of my cherished paperback books. It will last forever.
I bought an niv cos i read about the multi denomination team. But yes its easy to read but feel its a bit too loose.
So i now have an esv!!!
also have a paperback nkjv which is smooth read like the esv but im wanting to distance myself from the nkjv due to the textus receptus text base.
I haven't got a csb but i am getting very interested in this translation very much so. I am interested in peoples opinion on it. I hear its easier to read than a esv but not as loose as niv. Sounds perfect
The TR base is, IMO, actually the NKJV's strength. But most editions of the NKJV actually have notes showing many of the differences between the TR, the Nestle-Aland/UBS text used by most other modern translations, and the Hodges-Farstad "Majority" text, which is quite useful if you know what you're dealing with.
What company makes that compact one? 😮
Thank you for this video. I have seen lots of videos on UA-cam that say that we should only use the King James Version. I am not a part the King James only movement. I have noticed that a lot of independent Baptist Churches are King James Only.
A lot of those churches seem to go dangerously close into bibliolatry (worship of the bible itself rather than its divine Author), and preach the conspiracies of Peter Ruckman and Gail Anne "God And" Riplinger.
I enjoy NASB nlt
The NASB claims to be the most literal translation but occasionally the NKJV is actually _more_ literal. The NIV translators seem to be confused, and were rather inconsistent as to whether they were trying to create a paraphrastic translation or a literal one, and it can go back and forth (the CSB, for my other issues with its style, is at least more consistent).
Great video. I really appreciate what your saying warning about certain version. I hope you texted Becca (whoever that is) and tell Nick hi (whoever that is). The California accent is hilarious.. no offense.
my go to translations are the nasb77/95, ESV, NKJV, CSB and occasionally the NIV and KJV, i'm looking forward to the full release of the LSB. i also highly recommend sending your great grandmother's bible to rustic leatherworks to have a full grain leather rebind done, that would add 100+ years to the bible's lifespan. i also completely agree that sticking to word for word translations is the best idea
I use the NASB95, ESV, and CSB.
Im my main translations is niv
What year was your grand mom Bible published, just out of curiosity. Thanks.
Are you still reading the NKJV or have you switched to the CSB?
We also need to consider whether it is the Masoretic manuscripts or the Alexandrian.
Apples and kumquats. Masoretic only applies to the Old Testament and Alexandrian (if you believe in that textual theory; I don't and think it's just a composite of deviant texts rather than a text type of its own, leaving only Western and Eastern/Byzantine types) only applies to the New.
I have the Jeremiah study bible niv
you can rebind your favorite bible with some nice leather
We won't get through this in an afternoon Ms. The 4 I use the most are the 1611 KING JAMES , the 1966 GOOD NEWS , the 1966 Catholic RSV , and the 2006 2nd edition of the Catholic RSV . Some honorable mentions include the 1970 NEW ENGLISH , the 1982 NEW KING JAMES , and the 2004 HCSB.
Yes, steer clear of The Passion Translation, or as I call it, The Second Book of Mormon.
Too true! Simmons' story about how he met an angel who gave him special knowledge about translating the Bible is eerily similar to Joseph Smith's story.
I have the step Bible which tells you the Greek and Hebrew
I have the Charles Spurgeon
How do you like it!?
Do you know how many translations lately been released? Very confusing for me.
Too many
("Are we being shot at?"🤣) Seriously though this was a great topic, I completely agree, we have to be careful when reading some of the different bible translations... I personally read the NKJV(keeping it original💯) but I also own the (Contemporary Comparative Parallel Bible) Take for example a verse from the Lord's prayer;(Matthew 6:13) the NKJV includes;(For yours is the kingdom & the power & the glory forever. Amen.) The NIV, NLT, & The message doesn't.
Btw your Grandmothers bible, Amazing/Gorgeous.. 😍

Your grandma’s Bible is SO pretty
I haven’t really read the NLT because I had heard some things about it in the past, but maybe I should try it out! I’m definitely interested!
@@_KendraChristine I didn’t mean to sway you. I just think it gets lumped in with the message and the passion. I think it’s good to be wary and cautious
At least the guy who wrote the message said up front that it was a creative dramatization and paraphrase, the guy who wrote the passage made all sorts of false claims about his credentials and his editing team and that he gotten taken to heaven for a special “download” of the scriptures from Jesus 😳. He changed the introduction to the second additions because people were so upset about it. And most of his initial interviews about it have been pulled from UA-cam too. Deceptive 😣.
@@vickih5405 wow… I had no idea about that backstory, that’s incredibly troubling😣
I use a world bible school study edition journaling bible and a king James bible can I write in them with a pompom pen or with a Bic stic pen or with a pencil sending you lots of love and hugs and prayers for you and you're beautiful family amen My lovely friend god bless you and you're family 🙏❤️
interesting that you mentioned the Message bible... I thought I would try this bible once years ago... and brought it one day to church... and when asked to read from it a passage out of Ephesians.. the Sunday school teacher just looked at me bewildered and asked... what translation is THAT?... everyone was a little shocked... so I never used it after that....
but I disagree with you on your choice of the NKJV... I used to be a big fan of it as well... in fact I purchased that same bible you showed the MacArthur study bible back in 2000 and used it for about 4 years until I started noticing little quirks about it....
remember the premise of the NKJV.. is that they wanted to create a bible that was easier to understand and Not as archaic as the KJV... this is a noble reason... but I feel the NKJV translators over extended themselves.. and placed a lot of their own biases or.. interpretations of what the text should state in their final product.. some passages to compare between the KJV and what the NKJV (an update to the KJV).. say...
please compare these verses...
Genesis 1:1
Genesis 22:8
Haggai 1:10
Numbers 21:14
Song of Solomon 3:9
1 Cor 1:18
Rev 4:11
for starters.... if you are Not sure... how the NKJV corrupted these verses and others... I can explain just ask me...
for example Haggai 1:10..say... the KJV states "over you"... the NKJV states "above you".. correct..?. seems the same but WRONG... this "over you".. was meant in the text to be understood as "because of you".. the NKJV translators... missed the intended meaning of THAT verse...
you gave a little speech about the importance of what we read... and you mentioned paraphrased bibles.. but bibles such as the NKJV which was just supposed to be an update... that actually changed verses///AND there are many more..... is just as bad or worse because they are more subtle about it... like the serpent to Eve in the garden...
be careful..
Kendra, all translations are interpretations. Where did they get their definitions from? Because the translators did not want to make a mistake, the definitions can be too literal. Even in the King James, some verses are heresy at a glance. Interpretation should be based on what the verse means and not solely based on what the verse says. Scripture interprets scripture. Even W.E. Vine has some words that he shows don't mean what some people think it means.
Try the Kenneth Wuest Translation. He was an NASB translator and Professor at Moody Bible Institute. He brought out all the possible meanings of words.
Some people will get stuck because of the readability of the King James so the New Living Translation might be for my kids.
Read Revelations from the King James and then the Phillips translation for fun and tell me if you got the same idea.

Have you watched any of Kent Hovind?
OR Gale Riplinger??
I haven’t
Kent Hovind is a tax protestor and went to jail. Gail Riplinger does not have credentials in Bible.
Gail Anne Riplinger wrote a book under her initials and when called out claimed God was her co-author, basically elevating it to the level of 67th book of the Bible. Look out - she thinks too highly of herself.
Yes the original KJV 1611
a cover can be replaced.
I'm sure this woman means well and is sincere. But it is obvious she is still very much a "newbee" in her christain journey if she thinks ANY translation is representative of the "original" text. We not only don't have any actual original texts, but those we do have are themselves copies of the "original" manuscripts! All translations are functionally interpretations at their core. Unless one is willing to actually become fluent in Hebrew, where you first read the scripture in Hebrew and THEN read it in english, you do not really know what was being said. Therefore, as a consequence, you are best served by using all the english translations to get a basic knowledge of the text--but with the understanding that they still "commentaries" at heart.

I was raised as a Catholic... but I fell away from the church when I was 16.. because by then I could see that many things were Not right... by the time I was 9....... for instance I realized my folks did not own a bible at home... and so I took the S&H green stamps mom gave me to trade for a toy with ....and instead traded them for our home's first and only family bible...my sister finally came across it among my mom's things.. .. mom passed away in 2013.. and my sister gave me the bible back.. ..and so after nearly 60 years... the bible and I are re united again...
The way I look at it, the bible was not written in my native language and therefore I am highly dependent on someone else (including King James) in another culture to translate holy scriptures-then approved translations are all ok for me. But that is just me.
