I love this movie. That scene with Cody flying with marahute for the first time is so incredible. One of the most beautiful animated scenes ever. Idc
Back in the '90s I used to tell people that if Disney had cut everything else out of the film and released that flight sequence as a short subject, they could have gotten an Oscar nomination. Probably not true, but still…
It really is! Even just from a technical standpoint, I've always considered that sequence near perfect. The compositions ("shots") they chose are not easy ones and the emotional impact is so strong with that incredible score. The characters' anatomy, illusion of movement, gravity and weight are all just seamless. I think people sometimes forget in 2D animation that there is no camera, the characters have no mass, no skeleton and the law of gravity doesn't exist on the page... Cody is not actually falling towards us or away from us, we are not seeing his distorted reflection in an eagle's eye, those are all just illusions created by the artists' skill. Just creating a realistic looking eagle in 2D animation that still has personality and movement is so difficult. I think it was this movie (and that sequence) that made me develop such high standards for animation even as a small child. Just pure magic.
@@SwiftFoxProductions Pure animated Art/Film!!!
McLeach is probably the most underrated Disney villain. He doesn't even hesitate to kidnap Cody when faced with the threat of being reported to the rangers. And later attempts to feed Cody to the crocs. But like most Disney villains, he meets his end by falling to his death (like the Evil Queen, Gaston, and Clayton).
I lost track, but has Nick already reacted to Atlantis: The Lost Empire?
I have a theory about that movie's villain compared to these other villains that met their demise. Commander Rourke started off straight-faced and like a seemingly nice gentleman, but when his true colors were revealed. It was all about getting rich quick no matter who lives or dies in the process. Now when comparing to past villains before him like Percival McLeach. They both strived in striking it rich, but McLeach didn't need to act subtle to get what he wants. He made his intentions known the moment he met the protagonist. To sum it up, each Disney villain dating back to Walt's lifetime and ones from after his death (specifically the 90s Renaissance Era) didn't need to hide their true evil nature until the end. A twist villain became the staple for Disney's animated flicks post-2001.
"Let's see: the boy's got the eagle; I want the eagle; the boy won't give me the eagle. [...] If I could just find the boy's weak spot, I could get him to tell me where the eagle is. [...] The boy's only got one weak spot and that is the eagle. [...] Maybe if I stuck him in a giant anthill, it would loosen his tongue and then..." XD XD XD XD XD XD XD XD
I saw this as a kid, but don't think I ever quite got to the end at the time.
The animals left in the cages... may have haunted me.
And yes, McLeach is definitely a cold mf.
I completely agree. He's a poacher, killed Marahute's mate, takes pride out of what he did, was probably gonna sell those other animals for a profit after they were turned into fashion, kidnapped a child, threatened/forced the child to give up Marahute's location, abused Johanna, made Cody believe that Marahute was dead, kidnapped Cody AND her again, and then tried to kill Cody with fucking crocodiles! And the worst part? There's actually people like him in real life. What a despicable human being. He deserved to die at the end 100%.
@@chrissonofpear1384 I wish they had taken care of that, but maybe since Frank was able to get out earlier, he helped the others escape?
You should watch "Ferngully: The Last Rain Forest" it's a great movie with a great cast including two iconic actors Robin Williams and Tim Curry
Maybe Nickflix should watch The Last Unicorn as it's one of my favourite movies 🦄
I love both movies so much, but even as a kid, I always liked this one more and after seeing it for the first time as an adult, let me just say, it's one of Disney's best films. Way better than I remembered it. 😍😍😍❤❤❤
Marahute is just one of my favorite…ANYTHING in animation. I’m already an animal lover but they struck such a fantastic balance between making her realistic and yet still so expressive. Glen Keane (who also led animation on characters like Ariel and the Beast) and the rest of the animation team did amazingly at selling her scale and nature. She really does feel like a national treasure.
The fact she doesn't talk line the others animals makes her more majestic
I always enjoyed this one better than the first movie.
Me to dude.
I ADORE the tidbit that the albatross brothers are named after Orville and Wilbur Wright - THE Wright brothers who were the first to get a plane off the ground in successful flight!
Its also the names of the dodo airline birds in animal crossing 😊😗
You should read the book Flying off Rattlsnake Mountain my ancestor created the first airplane
This one is much, much better. The animation is a huge upgrade, the music is much better, the villain is amazing, and the story is just a lot more complete.
PIXAR has been helping out with 3D models since they were just in their infancy.
@@matveynoname7083 Pixar was originally a Lucasfilm division. Ironic given the current situation.
@@nickmanzo8459 it was in the 80's when they were making original shorts.
The villain was more scary for me especially with that scene where he threw knives at the kid, I've never seen the first but when first seeing the villainess on these reaction videos, doesnt have the same level of terror and intimidation as the one in this for me.
@@artistanthony1007 yeah Madame Medusa was probably the best character in the first movie, but she was just… pretty underwhelming in terms of a Disney villain.
Bruce Broughton, the composer, never achieved the 'first tier' of movie composers, whatever that might mean, but his scores are always worth hearing, as in this film. See also "Silverado".
He also had to give up composer duties for HOME ALONE since this film ran a bit behind in production so he couldn't commit to that film before finishing RESCUERS DOWNUNDER
He also did both Homeward Bound films which I adore so much!
Apparently the theme park Carowinds seems to appreciate his work. They use this movie's soundtrack on one of their rides.
Fun fact...this is the ONLY Disney sequel to be considered not just part of the main Disney animated canon....but it also has a place of honor in the Disney Renaissance as well. And the animation for this one is just STUNNING. Particularly for Marahute, the eagle. She's beautiful.
The late John Candy plays Wilbur! This makes the film even better!
George C. Scott, whom played Patton in the film of the same name playa the villainous McLeach.
Wow, I KNEW that Wilbur's voice sounded familiar! I just was drawing a blank!
Both died later in 1994 and 1999.
@ryan jones I do believe Tristan Rogers (Jake) is still alive.
This is a very good sequel. I love Penny a lot, but i think this one may be better than the first movie. Thank you so much for the video. I'm excited for your The Incredibles 2 reaction 😁😁💕
Thanks as always for watching Micaela!
I thought Cody was more resourceful and more interesting than Penny. I liked Penny fine, but I think Cody was better done.
@@nickflix8657 there is a mouse movie I saw when I was little it’s called mousehunt I didn’t really like it maybe you would
@@nickflix8657 Have you heard of The Last Unicorn? It's an animated movie by Rankin Bass. Would love to see your first time reaction when watching that 🦄
I don't know why but I always loved Joanna the monitor lizard so much as a kid ... her animation is just so expressive and she's just so fun and sassy 💗
Yes, she's very funny. The fact she doesn't talk renforce this
"You don't know Bernard like I do. He'll never give up."
TBH, Bernard is one of my all time fav animated characters.
His arc throughout this film of trying to propose, being the underdog to Jake, and then rescuing everyone in the end is amazing.
I commend animator Glen Keane for his job on bringing Marahute to life. His attention to detail for this marvelous eagle character is one of the most extraordinary feats of animation I’ve ever seen! As an animator myself, this is very inspiring to me.😁
I love how Marahute can't talk, but just with the animation of her eyes, Glen Keane makes the character emote. Combined with Frank Welker's terrific voice acting, she's a great side character.
Whoa, am I first?
You were second lol
FORGOTTEN CHILDHOOD MEMORY UNLOCKED 😭😭 I remember always wanting one of the giant eagles after watching this
4:27
The entire sequence of Cody flying on the eagle is still one of the most beautiful scenes in any animated movie!
Keep in mind, this was 1990!
…20 years before How To Train Your Dragon!
I liked the development of Bernard and his character.
Me too, in particular with the razorbak 🤭
Bernard is the real MVP. 😍😍😍
@@monsterhanna6691 I don't know for this version but in the french one, Bernard stutters
I love the world development around the mice.
The poacher scared me as a kid. This is actually the first time kinda seeing this movie since it came out.
We will never see such animated movies and Disneys like that now. Even if few actual animated movies are good, old schools animations was so great.
So few people have recorded themselves reacting to this movie. I've always found it to be a thoroughly enjoyable Disney Renaissance film as well as 2D animated film in general. The one part in particular that makes it enjoyable, I think, is the abundance of fun and adventure and how they're balanced out in proportion to each-other. It's kind of like Indiana Jones (hence the character of Jake the Kangaroo rat who is kind of a rogue and has the whip and the hat) but better suited for little, little children as well as adults. Every time I watched this movie as a child it made me want to just run around the basement and frolic and wrestle with my brother or cousins. I'm glad you finally watched it man. :) It was a good choice.
nice to wake up to
Also Nick, Joanna is a Goanna lizard. They're a species of moniter lizard. The same genus that komodo dragons come from. They tend to be very aggressive and deadly reptiles.
Yes, she's a monitor lizard
i have this movie and was the first rescuers movie i saw i didnt know there was one before it lol
Great reaction as always! Take care! Aloha from Hawaii!
Thanks Jaymie!
I believe the opening scene of the camera zooming over the outback was the first time computer animation was used to fully animate a scene.
That's a great scene
Do Kipo and The Age of Wonderbeast. It is an amazing show on Netflix.
Is Mcleach rides a ,,Mad Max” vehicle?
Not quite; see my comment above
The epic eagle flight scene is burned into my brain from way back then. This and Pokemon The Movie 2000 were childhood inspirations for a story I would write with a giant, majestic bird as a key characters that a protagonist rides. I just had forgotten how early in the movie that scene took place. I also always found it super dark that the poacher kidnapped a kid and was going to kill him. All the epic or dark moments are what I remember about this movie; I had forgotten entirely about the albatross and other goofy things. But Cody is great and makes up for the weaker moments.
This one has a really great music score
Aww this movie brings back memories. Thank you, Nick, for another great reaction and your honest thoughts. I'm glad more people are watching these classics.

Loooove this movie. This movie made me want to sleep in a hammock and have a Swiss Army Knife as a little girl. And I always say PEA SOUP in a squeaky voice when I have some. XD
And if I remember correctly, Mcleach is the same actor as Grandpa Joe from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. :)
RIP John Candy 💕
the voice actor for Mcleach actually played Scrooge in a Christmas Carol and I think Patton. I'm drawing a blank on his name. Found out recently that Campbell Scott is his son, so part of his name. lol
McCleach was played by George C. Scott, while Grandpa Joe was played by Jack Albertson and David Kelly. And I also do that whenever I have pea soup! ^_^
Oh right! Yes thank you guys for correcting me. Was Grandpa Joe the mean neighbor from Fox and The Hound? I guess I could look it up too xD
@@horrorcide13 Oh! You are right, Albertson did play that character in fox and the hound! Cool, I didn't know that, but now I can definitely hear it!
The animation is massively improved from the first one, but Bernard and Bianca have no dynamic with Cody. They never even tell him their names!
I loved this movie when I was a child. I still love the beginning scene with Cody and Marahute flying.
Now some of the characters are just too childish for me
But I still feel a bit disappointed that they didn’t show the boy returning home to his mother
That was a fault in both movies, a lot of very random side characters that felt childish or at least clogged up the screen. But both are still decent, entertaining flicks, and Bernard and Bianca were fun characters.
I haven’t watched this in such a long time😍 but I love this sequel more than the first film
Fun Fact:
This was the first Disney movie in which the animation was digitally colored and the CGI elements were given textures instead of flat colors!
It was a nice sequel.
I think one of the things in the first movie was the fact that jenny was an Orphan. I'm not saying the Orphange doesn't care when one of their Kids vanishes, But statistically with Orphans there is a much higher chance for her to have run away. So my guess is that while the Police investigated, they didn't so much treat it as a kidnapping as they did a runaway, which does get a different kind of attention. Plus, and this is a sad fact, NYPD has hundrets of cases each day. Normally in the case of a child dissapearance you would have parents who are constantly demanding updates. but with Orphans, there is a good chance the Pressure wasn't as high, again, not because the Orphanage didn't _care_ but because they were missing the manpower to do that. Like many social instiutions, Orphanages are chronically understaffed.
Aww don‘t hate on Frank! He has anxiety 😂
And was he able to get out. 😂
(At 13:05) I didn't realize this before back then, but apparently both the albatrosses on this movie and the last movie, are not only Brothers, but they're ALSO named after The Wright Brothers. Also you can tell the difference between the two albatross Brothers from the hats they wear. Orville wears a leather hat (I'm not sure what kind it's called) and Wilbur wears a baseball cap.
My parents got the reference and told me when I was a little girl
The poacher's pet Joanna is a female by the way. Just wanted to make it clear since you kept calling her a 'he'.
Joanna is my favorite.
The Rescuers Down Under is another one of my favorites! i especially loved that they used a different level of animation for it, it was so good to hear Bernard and Bianca's voice actors reprise their roles!
This was Eva Gabor’s last film by the way before her death on July 4, 1995.
@@StephenLuke they didn't do a third movie because of her death.
In France, Bernard's voice actor is dead two years ago
In case you were curious: Marahutes screeches are not actually an eagle's. Eagles can't make those kind of screeches, so what you're hearing comes from a red tailed hawk.
4:27, is it just me or does this scene remind You of AVATAR? Lol!
I remember LOVING this movie as a kid but yeah it's definitely far from a masterpiece lol! But if you're looking for beautiful animation with great storytelling, I'd REALLY recommend WolfWalkers. It's not popular because it's made by a lesser known animation studio but it's an absolutely beautiful film with a powerful message that doesn't get watered down by a lot of "childish" humor or tropes like other films often do. And it doesn't have any annoying characters like that lizard creature in this film. :P I think someone like you would really appreciate it.
It’s on my list actually, so plan on doing it eventually!
@@nickflix8657 Do Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea too. Same studio and director. All have one of the most gorgeous animations you'll ever see 😍
So Wilbur and Orville the Albertross' are refences to the Wright Brothers, the men who invented one of the first early planes. They're also referenced as Dodo's in Animal Crossing New Horizons.
The Anti-Poaching and Environmental message I feel hits harder today due to the amount of endangered animals we have now and the wild fires that have scorched Australia in recent years.
Oh and I'm pretty sure this film solidified my appreciation of the Bald Eagle as a child even if its a fictionalised breed in this film. Its gorgeous.
Finally the soundtrack might be one of the best from straight to VHS/DVD era of Disney. 💯
This will always be a fantastic film, The visuals alone is reason enough to love it but the characters and story make it so great.

"Joanna... Did you know do you know there was a razorback in my truck? Did ya? Did ya? There was a RAZORBACK IN MY TRUCK!!" LOL 😄
The medical bay scene was one of the reasons I had such a fear of needles and going to the pediatrician when I was a kid hahaha
I used to watch this movie all the time as a boy! Easily one of my favourites!
I hope you're never stressed by so many recommendations for movies, so I try not to suggest too many at a time.
For this specific movie, Roald Dahl's The BFG, if you're interested in this one here's what I want to say. There are two versions of this film, the animated movie from 1989, and the live-action remake from 2016. I STRONGLY recommend that you choose to watch the 1989 animation version. Both movies tell the same story, but the original from 1989 does a much better job at telling it. It's free to watch on UA-cam in high definition, and if you can't record a reaction using UA-cam, you could probably purchase or rent it.
Did you decide to not to Buffy in the end? Still loving your reactions! :)
Nick, could you please watch Thumbelina? It’s another Don Bluth animated movie, and a pretty good one)
Disagree, I think it’s pretty bad Disney copycat Schlock long after Bluth’s best work was behind him.
7:56* it not only sounds like George C. Scott, it looks like George C Scott.
3:40, this is one brave kid, and it reminds me of the opening scene to Mission Impossible 2.
I do feel like this movie is very very underrated, but still a masterpiece.
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.😉
5:28, they made It on a budget of $37 million dollars, which was a lot of money at the time.
This one is the first ever disney sequel way before the direct dvd sequels or Frozen 2. It came around the time Little Mermaid I believe and it's animation it's fantastic.
It came RIGHT after The Little Mermaid. I think because it was sandwhich between that movie and Beauty and the Beast, and it wasn't a musical, it got easily overshadowed and that's why it's underrated. I actually prefer this movie to the Little Mermaid because even as a kid, I was critical of movies and while I did like the villain and music more of The Little Mermaid, I felt the main cast was stronger here overall as well as the story and animation. It's funny I was pretty much the target demographic for the Little Mermaid, a 7-year-old little girl, but I HATED Ariel at the time. I am a bit more forgiving but I still am not a fan of hers.
Love seeing your take on this. Thanks
Let's not forget about Wilbur aka John candy still on the Cliff raising the Australian eagle babies forever more
That part was the best. 😂
1:52, this was the fourth Disney movie to use computer animation.
The first being The Great Mouse Detective. The second Oliver and Company.
The third, The Little Mermaid.
Actually the fifth. The Black Cauldron used CG for some of the titular Cauldron shots. And this is only counting "Disney Movie" as the Disney Animated Canon; as far as live-action goes, Tron was in 1982
This is a rarity in film - a sequel that is more memorable than the first film to the point you forget there is a first film. I was introduced to this film before seeing the first.
6:32, that was a pretty cool transition.
It would be nice to see a reaction to "Dragon hill" (la colina del dragon) but it seems to be nearly impossible to find English dub😔 (it exists, but I don't know where to find it) There's an English trailer on UA-cam though
If I'm correct, Joanna is a water monitor and the Australian mouse is actually a Gerboa 😄

I love this movie but one thing i’m annoyed a little bit about about it is that we didn’t get to see the other animals released and i would love to see a little connection with the two kangaroos. Otherwise this is one of my favorites 😍😍😍
Exactly what I was thinking, but I'm assuming that maybe since Frank was able to get out and now that McCleach is dead, maybe he could free the other animals. Either way, love this movie, and it's one of my favorites in Disney; same as the first. 😍😍😍
Sorry, but I have to disagree, and say that this film deserves 9.5/10 for me. Also, other than the first film having more songs in it, I liked this film significantly more than the first film. I mean I felt like Rescuers Down Under was more epic, the villain was more memorable, and, yeah, how could you not love the fact that Bernard, and Bianca at least got engaged in this sequel? Anyway, I’m glad that you liked Rescuers Down Under even a little bit more than The Rescuers.
I remember this movie being one of the once that I'd watch just over and over and over again. It was very tense and scary at parts but I just love dit so much
Still hoping for the animated Hobbit (1977) and Watership Down (1978). Thank you
Bernard is the real hero of the movie. He pushed a man and saved a kid. He’s the og.
This is still one of my favorite Theater Viewings of my childhood (the flying scenes were AMAZING on the big screen), and when Disney was considering reconfiguring some of their older films to run on IMAX Screens, this was the one I HYPED for them to do that treatment for.
However, I also have to tell of my brief friendship with Peter J. Greenwood. He was an artist from Australia, but also worked as a voiceover actor in animation, including RESCUERS DOWNUNDER, though largely in ADR (his voice can be heard as the Radio announcer telling of Cody’s backpack being found and during the airplane scene). I was sharing a review of RESCUERS DOWNUNDER on a FB Animation page in May 2020 and he sent through comments a full-figure drawing of Cody’s mother (particularly special as her face is never seen in the actual film). Touched by this, we “Friended” on FB and while we only had a few conversations, he always came off as a kind man, though tired from all his projects getting postponed due to the pandemic (and we definitely bonded over art).
Sadly, after too brief an acquaintance, Peter passed away in January 2021 due to COVID complications.
Rest In Peace, Sir.
My parents got us this one, the sequel, first and that's all we knew for a long time. Then they bought us the first film and I was so annoyed because I was like why did they make a prequel? lol I liked Down Under a lot better and loved it as a kid. I remember being so annoyed by Jake upstaging Bernard and jeopardizing Bernard's chance with Bianca. By the way the late great John Candy did the voice of Wilbur.
(At 9:08) Alligators? This is taking place in Australia. Those are saltwater crocodiles.
The great tragedy of this movie is that they were introducing some very groundbreaking stuff as far as computer graphic elements and a new coloring system and putting a lot of money into it. But the marketing was pulled very quickly after it wasn’t bringing in the numbers they hoped for, so it’s gone under the radar for a lot of casual Disney fans. 😔
That's what I was thinking! They worked hard to make an incredible movie, and now it's criminally underrated.
@@monsterhanna6691 Yes!! I could be wrong, but I feel like all the money they were putting into the new tech caused them not to put much into marketing in the first place, so no one really knew about it to go and see it.
It doesn't help that it was released between "The Little Mermaid" and "Beauty and the Beast" either.
I never realized but... Did Bernard just kinda murk a man in cold blood? I mean, I know its the waterfall that actually got him, but Bernard pushed him into a water _teaming with crocs_ ! There was only one way that was gonna end, and you know it!
Damn, that is on cold-blooded Mouse.
I like this movie much more than the other!Cody and the Eagle are *STUNNING!* 😍🤍💛🦅👦🏼
If you watched this in an oculus you’d feel like you were flying with Cody. God I miss John Candy. Just listening to Wilbur’s voice made me nostalgic. I always cry when Bernard finally pops the question to Bianca.
Gotta love John Candy.. Prefer him than the other one in the 1st movie.
In terms of Disney sequels, this one looks really good
My only complaint is that Cody isn't an Indigenous Aboriginal Austrailian (forgive me if I'm not up to date on my nomenclature) like the makers wanted. Otherwise, I love this film exponentially more than the first. McLeach and Joanna are one of my favorite Disney villain/sidekick teams, and I'm ashamed it took me until a few years ago to realize Joanna is some kind of moniter lizard.
I remember I was 4 when this movie came out and I had the fuzzy-flocked Bernard and Bianca Christmas Tree Orniments from McDonalds (and also the tie-in Happy Meal toys which were miniature movie cameras that you could look through and see stills featuring whichever character was on the side of the individual toy)
Oh my gosh, that's so cool! I wish I could've gotten something like that, but I was too young at the time when this came out; I was born in '96. Still love the movie either way. 😊😍
@@monsterhanna6691 Yeah, I'd say -6 is a bit too young for a Happy Meal ;)
But yeah, even at the time McDonald's only had these for like a week or two because Disney execs pulled all the merch when the movie didn't do well on its opening weekend and quickly buried it. It's like I say: Love the art, dismantle the corporation.
An Aboriginal character would've been so cool. This was before Disney started to care about representation...gotta have a white boy or people won't relate to the character or something (I do love how that misconception has been proven wrong time and time again). Why doesn't Cody have an accent either? Anyways, I was also 4 when this came out and I had such awe of the whole opening. Marahute and Jake were my favorites. I wanted an eagle friend so bad
This second movie is actually one of my favorite movies ever
THIS is how you do a sequel! It's such a shame that this movie is so underrated.
This is one of my favorite Disney films. That opening flying scene is magical
For non-animated movies, do the Dark Knight Trilogy next.
There some good animated Batman movies too. Mask of the Phantasm and Batman Under the Red Hood are great.
Already seen them, The Dark Knight is actually my favorite movie of all time!
The most realistic part of this movie is the poacher. Poachers will not hesitate to take a life of anyone getting in their way
2:39, a lot of people live the Australian Outback. They have to provide their own natural resources.
This movie is a environmental theme to save endangered species in Australia. Recommend the special environmental movie of the 90s: “FernGully: The Last Rainforest”
