@@patriciasmith3875 oh yeah that's a great one even with Ice Cube in it
This is truly an underrated animated movie from Warner Bros.
It’s a shame the Mark Dindal, who directed this, Emperor’s New Groove, and Chicken Little couldn’t turn them into financial successes, and probably stop directing.
@@osmanyousif7849 ON THE CONTRARY HE IS COMING WITH ANOTHER PROJECT
Gene Kelly was actually a consultant for this film! And they very much modeled Danny and his dancing style off of him, so it’s a nice little reference when they show Danny jump into his footprints at the beginning.
Holy smokes! My freaky childhood is slappin' me in the face. Thanks for watching this!
It's a crime against animation how underrated this movie is, but I'm glad to hear that it's getting more and more of a cult following as years go by. It's the visuals that really make this movie work.
Great to have you back. This truly is a cult classic. Also, Darla seriously gives me nightmares.
like being Chucky coming from david kirshner, but then again this is the True CATS animated movie that ironically got released in 1997 and this is something that 2019 cats wished to achieve
I love Cats Don't Dance! just about everything about it is just fantastic! especially the songs they became timeless classics, and i love that some of them were done by Randy Newman!!!
Specifically the musical numbers you mean excluding the opening and closing scenes
Darla dimple is one of the most expressive villains in a cartoon movie I've ever seen
She’s almost on a level with Cruella. Who ever designed Darla must either hate children or knows one as devilishly angelic like Darla and just had a real life visual to draw from.
I kind of wish we got more villains played by children. Because the actress here was probably having a blast. Like, the day I see an actor/actress less than 13 years old laugh evilly like at 23:19 - 23:26 in movies today, I’m gonna say that person is going to be a star….
@@forestcatkay14 more like a chucky aspect coming from producer david kirschner, but ironic/coincidential enough, regarding cruella, this was the last performance of the actress who provided of cruella and frances
Gene Kelly was the lead actor and I think the brains behind Singing in the Rain. He's a legend and that's why they dedicated the movie to him.
I’ve been constantly told that this movie was based off P.O.C trying to make it in the movie business while fighting barriers, racism(or speciesism in this case) and stereotypes. It’s really bold for an animated kids feature and I miss films like this.
Great to see you back, Nick! It's okay if you decide to wait a while to give a reaction while you're feeling happy and excited because everyone has those days where they may be feeling sick, having to deal with personal issues, or simply stressed and exhausted, making the reaction not as good. Personal life always have to come first. Same thing with Sophie Lents (another one of your fellow reactors) this month where she had to deal with personal matters, but we all understood and given her the time she needed. Hope you continue to stay strong, Nick!
This is one of my favorite non-Disney animated movies and I used to watch it all the time on tv.
I’m glad you’re feeling better; never hesitate to take care of yourself before anything else.
It's been a while since I've rewatched this but I watched it A LOT as a kid. It is CRIMINALLY underrated and rewatching it here in your video really cemented that for me. I was like smiling the whole time. To each their own about the music thing but I feel all the songs are amazing and the visuals are insane. I appreciate them a lot more now as an adult since I'm an artist and I know how hard it is to pull off a lot of the incredible perspective shots. Crazy crazy. And the voice acting is really really good.
Also all the scenes with Darla and max, accompanied by the score, are honestly really spooky. I love the Big and Loud reprise with the darker tone.
Frances the fish was voiced by Betty Lou Gerson (the voice of Cruella de Vil). This was her very last film role before she died 2 years later.
I’m really surprised you didn’t like Darla’s song, it’s one of the best villain songs, it was… well, Big and Loud, and over the top! To each their own. Glad to see you back. :)
The SQUEAL that I SQELLED when I saw this. Haven't been on YT in a few days and omigosh! This is my all time favourite movie, I recently got Sawyer tattooed on my leg, to see someone I enjoy the channel of reacting to it 😭 this made me so excited!! I have never met another person who even knows of this movie let alone seen it!
Loved your reaction to this movie Nick and don’t worry about not liking the music. It’s honestly the visuals that are amazing. To me the singing is great primarily because they have the singer Natalie Cole for Sawyer’s singing voice.
Fun facts: Gene Kelly he is in Singing in the Rain and a bunch other movies. Recommend checking some of them out. The actor for the Woolie Mammoth is the same actor who plays Gimli in LOTR. Actress for Tilly I guarantee you have seen her in something from Descendants to Sister Act she has been in a lot.
Now if I recall correctly this movie is actually how it was and still is for people of color- mostly focused on black people, were having difficulty getting into show business. And when you look back on Hollywood history most African-Americans tended to get the “cat meows” sort of roles. Sometimes not even a line they just appear.
Personal opinion: I believe 1997 was probably the year for animation. You have another classic from Ron Clements and John Musker (Hercules), Don Bluth's comeback (Anastasia), Hayao Miyazaki's magum opus (Princess Mononoke), Satoshi Kon's directorial debut (Perfect Blue), and Mark Dindal's debut with this underrated flick, which won the Annie Award for Best Animated Feature.
Also, I don't think this movie gets enough love for it's cast. Scott Bakula (Quantum Leap) and Jasmine Guy (A Different World), sound like a pair that you would think would work for these two leads. But somehow, with the tone that goes on in the movie, it works.
Good to see you again. Hope everything is okay, Nick. Haven’t finished the video, but already loving the reaction!
I love this movie! I’d watch it all the time as a kid and I still love it to this day. Really glad you checked out this underrated film, Nick! Welcome back and thank you.😁
Yes!! Oh my gosh, I'm so happy to see this! This was one of my absolute favorite animated movies from my childhood! Hardly anyone's heard of this movie and it breaks my heart. It's was an underappreciated diamond in the rough. It's not perfect but it's still amazing with great messages. Thank you for reacting to this, Nick. I hope you're feeling better.
I’ve never heard of this film so I’m excited to watch ur reaction. And no need to apologize. I hope everything’s going well with you
I grew up with this movie, this is my childhood. Thank you for reacting to it. It made my day brighten, so again thank you. This movie is so underrated.
Bro, you are SO underrated. Your reactions are so funny and cool. Keep it up!
this is one of my favorite animated movies and brings back so many memories from my childhood. I still find myself singing the songs randomly when going about my day. I knew above all else you’d love the animation; it was way better than it had any right to be haha great reaction Nick! ❤
Maybe it’s just me, but Danny reminds me a lot of Nick and vice versa. 😄 (And that’s a compliment in every way, I promise. 😆❤️)
I was thinking the same! 😂
I wouldn’t be surprised if Zootopia ripped off this movie….
This was the second animated movie I watched on Cartoon Network in 2000, the first being Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm The Animated Movie.
I remember when this first came on TV back in 1997!! I was 4 then, and asked my parents "when's the cat movie start?" It was sooo good then and I'm glad to see you back!!
I LOVED watching this movie with you! We worked so hard to make it! Even though we didn't expect it to be more successful than Disney's features, we were saddened to see Warner Bros just let it die, without much promotion. Those who created it being laid off when Warner's consumed Turner Feature Animation, there was nobody left at the studio to take credit for any possible Cats Don't Dance success. I clearly remember David Kirschner saying he almost left the ceremony, before CDD wont the Annie Award for Best Picture (beating Hercules). I'm the person who designed and created every drawing of the movie star caricatures in this movie and I feel like we're friends now. It brought tears to my eyes many times, to see you enjoy it.
Sadly this movie gained no traction when it first premiered. Warner Bros did very little to promote it, plus Disney was still going through their renaissance, this movie didn't have a chance. It gained a bit of a cult following when it got a video release.
Also Gene Kelly was the main actor in Singin' In the Rain. He apparently helped with some of the choreography for the film.
This movie is a such an underrated gem and I recommend it to anyone who loves Zootopia. Zootopia reminded me a lot of this movie except the main character wanted to be a cop rather than an actor.
I nearly spilled my damn tea when this came up on my subs list, I'm so excited!! This movie is horrifically underrated!! Its SO GOOD.
So glad you are reacting to this. Another underrated classic.
The final credits deticated Gene Kelly is legendary actor and dancer from 50's. I remember I saw one movie he was dancing with Jerry from Tom and Jerry. It was amazing human and cartoon dancing together.
Cats don’t dance happens to be one of my favorite musical movies when I was a kid, Whenever I’m in a sad mood in my Childhood years I always get The VHS tape of the movie put it in and watch it Over and over again
OMG! His is one of my favourite animated movies of all time! I'm shocked you reacted to it! Almost nobody knows about it which is such a shame because it's such a great film!
i'm so glad to see you again, i missed you!! i'm glad you're feeling better ❤
Glad to be back!!
@@nickflix8657 I’m glad you’re back too
@@nickflix8657 glad your feeling better
The true animated musical cats movie that was ironically released in 1997 since it is something that 2019 animated film cats wished to achieve since it failed to be made for 1997 by amblimation
This movie is such a hidden gem :)
Gene Kelly was a well known actor/director from the late 30s all the way until his death in 1996. He was well known for his singing and dancing in films. He was the main star of Singing in the Rain. He’s credited with the choreography in Cats Don’t Dance.
Sadly the last couple of years were rough after multiple strokes before he finally passed in 1996
You don't have to love all the songs and explain it Nicky. I'm nor a song lover myself but I can still enjoy them. The visuals are pretty cool too
This movie deserved more in terms of box office imo
Omg! Thank you so much for reacting to this highly underrated film. I had this movie on VHS and loved it so much I still rewatch it to this day. This is the movie that inspired me to want to become an actress or be on Broadway.
THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES EVER NO ONE REMEMEBRS IT SO THIS IS EXCITING
and so, you have become the FIRST EVER REACTOR to show your reactions on this animated gem, and guess what, this is one of my top favorite non disney animated films and it is first mentioned on my top ten part on my channel
I think most people, when they say they love the songs, are thinking of the last two songs ("Tell me Lies" and "Nothing's Gonna Stop us Now"). Those are the best, for sure.
Such an underrated and one of my childhoods that I loved to watch and still do to this day! Thank you for reacting to this Nick!
Also glad to have you back as well and happy to see you feeling better!
Such a good film and damn brings back so many memories lol we had this on VHS!! Loved your reaction
Such an underrated movie! It’s one of my all time favorites!
I'll always remember this as the first movie I ever saw by myself. My dad dropped me off at the movie theater so he could go see a different movie with his girlfriend.
As someone who grew up on classic movies from the Golden Age of Hollywood, this was such a treat for me. :)
My mom still hates this movie today because of how many times I watched it when I was little 😂
Loved this one from when I was a kid. Later, it could be considered actors fighting against racism or something.
"Is he signing his life away?" LOL! You're adorable Nick! I work in the film industry and when I sign contracts, signing up sends permissions, pages and so forth to MANY different companies involved in the film.
Gene Kelly is best known for his role in "Singing in the Rain", he was an actor and singer in classic movies.
I really love this movie and the songs are very amazing. Thank you Nick for reacting to this incredible movie. In this movie the character Darla Dimple was based off of Shirley temple.
I used to watch this movie when I was a small kid, and I loved it, man it's been forever since I've seen this movie, brings back memories.
Hi nick im so glad you have returned hope you are doing Great, if you don't know who Gene Kelly is, he is an actor dancer and singer you may remember him as Don Lockwood from one of my favorite musical movies of all time SINGIN IN THE RAIN in 1952, the movie has contributions from Gene Kelly as a choreographer he died in 1996 this was Kelly's final film project and is dedicated to his memory may he rest in peace Gene Kelly 1912-1996, also I highly recommend for you to react to a black and white classic CASABLANCA (1942) if you haven't seen it, it's one of the greatest movies in Hollywood history.
NICK!! it’s been a hot minute since we last saw ya, how’re you doing?! I’m glad you watched this movie, it’s a classic! It’s been so long since I last saw it and I’m glad that you enjoyed it :D
Tell me lies is one of my fav songs from this movie. Nothings gonna stop us now may actually be a bit higher
the movie is dedicated to Gene Kelly, who passed away on February 2nd, 1996 due to a heart stroke
Great movie choice, Nick! Glad to see you back, my brother! Just to let you know, though, Gene Kelly was a Hollywood movie star in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. He (and yes, Gene was a he) was a massive singer, dancer, and actor that had to fight hard to earn his place. Danny's character was based on him, and it was a massive dedication to the cultural impact he had.
Glad you’re back!!
Love these reactions, you make really good videos, been binging since I found your channel. Loved your reactions to brother bear and spirit!
This animated movie is one of my childhood when l was young and This bring back memories some of the funniest scenes. So Thank You of making this video. ❣
"OOOOOOHHHHH" JUST CAME OUT MY MOUTH LOL
I'm so freaking happy you're finally watching this, I kept hoping you would!! This is my childhood!!
I saw this movie a couple times, and I remember enjoying it. I also loved that ending song, along with the beautiful animation, having a kid be a villain, and of course the chemistry with Danny, and Sawyer. And yeah, how could you not love the other characters? Well, thanks for reacting to this one. Now, hopefully, a reaction to Warner Bros. Quest For Camelot won’t be too far behind at this point!
Can’t wait to see you watch Stuart little 2, after return of the Jedi next week. Also, I remember watching this movie from the library last year.
This was one of my all time favorite movies to watch as a kid, this brings back so many memories.
Nick! You’re killing it! This movie is hardly recognized! Very underrated gem, and I’m glad you’re one of the few to review this movie. I want to review this & Pagemaster on my channel someday!
I've known this movie since kindergarten. Love it still and Darla is such a hilarious villain.
This film is basically addressing the discrimination and inequality that existed in the American film industry back in the early twentieth century.
Back then, actors that had starring roles in films were mostly all white, while actors of differing races and cultures were given either small background roles or roles that were offensive and humiliating stereotypes.
Makes you glad that things have changed for the better since then.
So excited! I love the song Big and Loud, even though Darla was anything but darling. Always loved this movie.
Holy crap, what a pleasant surprise! I haven't thought about this movie in forever, I loved this movie!!!
One of my all time fav movies !! I’m so glad you’re watching this! I adore the songs, my personal fav being Tell Me Lies and the other favs the beginning song Our Time Has Come, Ig and Loud ( the good and evil version ), and Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now. And I adore the characters. Not a single character I dislike, not even the villains are dis likable, and I love the animation oh so much. ( also that wasn’t a movie set Tilly moved, that was a real diner XD she’s just that strong to move an entire building ).
This was one of those "watch in 8 parts on UA-cam because you can't find an actual copy" movies.
This was honestly one of my favorite movies as a kid
This is another one of my 90's childhood favorites!😁👍
THANK YOU!!! Thank you for watching this movie it was my favorite when I was little thank you!! ❤️❤️
Omg you finally watched it!!! The most underrated animated movie of all time imo
This movie does a lot of themes that really go over kids heads. It is a strong allegory for racism of the time. How black performers and performers of other races were relegated to supporting roles
Darla Dimple was somewhat based on Shirley Temple, although I don’t think Shirley Temple was evil like that as a child 🤣. Also, Darla Hood, from Our Gang.
I remember watching this a lot as a kid. The vhs also included a short for Dexters lab, which was the first time I saw that show.
Darla Dimple is an underrated villain with an underrated villain song
For me personally, Darla's villain song SLAPS! I really wish it was longer.
This film almost requires footnotes for the younger set. Just a few highlights:
"Gone With The Wind" was MGM (so was The Wizard of Oz) - the marquee is there to establish the time as 1939 or 1940. Warner Brothers did not have a film at the time that would still be instantly recognizable 60 years later. Mammoth Studios - with an introductory mammoth instead of a lion - is sort of a stand-in for MGM. Hence, L. B. Mammoth for Louis B. Mayer.
The 'King Kong' is not a female, but is being portrayed as a 'sissy' actor; several tough-guy actors through the years have been secretly gay.
The Darla Dimple 'Ark' song may sound familiar because it is a sort of paraphrase of Shirley Temple's signature song, "On the Good Ship Lollipop". Another of Shirley Temple's well-known songs was 'Animal Crackers', alluded to at 20:13. (Shirley Temple was under contract to 20th Century Fox, which is a reason that Judy Garland got the role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz)
I think you have seen 'Sunset Boulevard' and should recognize Max the big gorilla as a reference to the butler in that film. If you have not, do watch it.
"Big and Loud" is intended to invoke the huge production numbers in the Busby Berkeley musicals of that period, e.g., 42nd Street.
OMG, you don't know who Gene Kelly was? Bless me, what _do_ they teach them in these schools? Please watch 'Singing in the Rain'.
Black actors in Hollywood at this time could not get serious acting roles, only song-and-dance things (or 'natives' in jungle-themed films), and there is a kind of satirical inversion here with the 'ethnic' group that craves song-and-dance roles; but the metaphor is clear. "Know your place." The big final number is gospel-style for a reason.
Can you imagine this film being made with CG characters? No. Neither can I. I wish that the large studios would understand that there are many ways of telling stories.
Cats Don't Dance Facts
So the film is supposed to be set in the golden age of Hollywood (late 30's) and the animals are a stand in for minorities who were usually only used as background or stereotypical roles,
The character of Darla Dimple is a parody of the famous child star of that era Shirley Temple,
The character of Tilie Hippo is voiced by Kathy Najimy who you know from Hocus Pocus as the witch Mary,
The character of the fish Frances is voiced by Betty Lou Gerson who people know better as the original voice of Cruella DeVil in 101 Dalmatians,
The film is dedicated to Gene Kelly because is was a reference model for the dancing and was one of the Golden Age Dancer, Singer, actors and you know as the lead actor from Singin in the Rain,
Danny the cat is voiced by Scott Bakula (Quantum Leap, Star Trek: Enterprise, NCIS New Orleans)
@@SingleStepStudios I know that, but I only listed facts he would know.
Love this movie so much as a kid. Used to play this and rockadoodle a lot on vhs
Me and my siblings grew up on this! This was THE movie, man. Choice classic 👌
Last time I saw this I must have been around 8 years old, I forgot about a lot of this movie! While it’s definitely not my favorite it’s still entertaining and I’m glad you reacted to it! 👏
Welcome back Nick, I hope you’re doing ok!
I am thank you!!
For me, this movie is a solid 10 and was my favorite movie until Sing 2 dropped but it's still beloved. It's sad it didn't get the attention it deserved
I love this little hidden gem of a movie. I used to own it on VHS! It's a pretty neat little metaphor for non-white races in Hollywood in the early days of movie-making. But it's all wrapped up in such whimsy that it stands perfectly well as just a fun little movie about animals.
I seen the film 25 years ago when I was 6 years old, it was a classic :)
In terms of movement, this is my favorite non-Disney movie.
You missed the in-joke of Wooly playing the piano - referred to as "tickling the ivories" back in the day as the white piano keys were made from ivory.
I love this movie! It's my childhood and I love everything about it. If you love the background aspects check out "SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMMORON."
He did already.
Final Film of
Betty Lou Gerson

Yes!!! I am glad you enjoy this movie!
LOVE that you are watching this! I love this movie!
Hello. Glad you liked our movie. I was one of the animators on this movie. Particularly the female cat "Sawyer".
Now go check out our other movie...."Iron Giant". :)
All the best to you !
I first saw this movie at Hoopla Digital. This movie is so good, I was confused why this movie wasn't on HBOMAX.
My Favorite Animated Film of All Time:)❤️❤️❤️
