  • Electric scooters are popping up on streets all across B.C., and you may be thinking of picking one up yourself. Here's a primer on where you can and can't ride one in the province.

    Clearly VPD is all talk and no action. Cyclists and scooters go freely on the pedestrian zones of the seawall. The city could consider bylaw officers to assist with this since in other parts of the province they do more than just parking tickets, give them a task that actually keeps people/pedestrians safe!

    Would be nice if CBC Vancouver could provide the links to the actual bylaw they're talking about. Also, I would love to own an electric bike/scooter/motorcycle, but the current law is too restrictive for people who wants an alternative way to travel between Surrey and Vancouver. For example, I want to use a more powerful electric bike/scooter/motorcycle from Aliexpress. They come with more powerful batteries with powerful dual motors to carry a 200 - 300 pound guy across the municipalities (100km range) easily. Plus, the bylaws in the municipalities are not standardized across. Which makes it even more confusing. These restrictions just hampers innovation and technology. Which is ironic.

    Why doesn't this apply to other electric mobility devices like skateboards? I think it makes sense for scooters and other devices to fit the same rules as bicycles, but why artificially limit it to the least portable type of mobility device?

      because electric skateboard didn't take off in popularity so no need to put resources into that. While e scooters are great mobility tool, there are monkeys going around causing injuries. Toronto has it banned on its streets, while the greater Toronto area is allowed with rules set as well.

    I love how these are becoming more popular, but the problem is... It's pretty difficult to live in a hilly region like North Vancouver and use an e-scooter when the motor limit is 500w and 24km/h. Scooters capable of going up steep 10% hills without a problem tend to have much stronger/faster motors, which are technically illegal because the MOTOR can't exceed 24km/h. You can't get a stronger motor even if you don't exceed that speed limit.

  • @joeldobbs7396

    I have been commuting in Langley for four months now on a scooter, i stick to bike lanes and side streets with no serious problems so far. In areas where the bike lane crosses the right turn lane, i only use the right of way when it is clearly shown with a green lane strip, otherwise I take the turn tight up on to the sidewalk then get off and walk the scooter across the intersection. I am pretty sure this practice has prevented my becoming a human speedbump several times, so i suggest the same to anyone who uses bike lanes on high traffic roads. Nobody cares if you are right, they will run you down and lie about it later.

  • @RavingMad
    @RavingMad Рік тому

    The speed limit is being complicated for no reason. It should simply match ebikes. And not easily accessible information, but the speed regulation should apply only to the motor. For escooter thats 32kph max. Ebike motors assist up to 32kph and the rider if they can then peddle away to go faster. Many street cyclists ride around 50kph on peddle alone.
    This needs to be normalized across all provinces, and let bylaws restrict where necessary due to special road conditions may exist. It will simplify rules because default rules are provincial, while cities and other municipalities can restrict as they see fit and fair based on street conditions.

    An "E-scooter" is a motorized vehicle.
    The allowable top speed is 24km/h.

    there's no way of telling if a scooter is 45kg. 50kg. Or 60km.
    I've seem people double on a "E-scooter"
    An entry exam for a license' needs to be required before being allowed to purchase an electric motorized vehicle.
    After acquiring an entrance exam 365 license. those things need to be on the road.
