Castlevania is one of those rare games that infuriates you to rage quitting and makes you want to rethink what you do with your free time.....but then 30 minutes later, you're back at it again. It walks that fine line between challenging and frustrating
A hallmark of a good game that is difficult that makes you rage quit, is the desire to return to it, the thought process of how you will attack it when you're holding the controller again.
If you know the patterns and the weapons to use you can beat it in less than 30 minutes. Every year I take a trip to Castlevania to beat my favorite game. 😁
I'll give a mention to Mega Man 3 and Kirby's Adventure The former for managing to be good just like with Mega Man 2, introducing sliding, giving us Rush and his jet form, and incorporating Proto Man. Also a rare case of an incomplete game still managing to be a worthwhile experience. As for Kirby's Adventure, thanks to it being designed for beginners it has aged better than multiple other NES titles. The soundtrack is generally nice for NES standards, one of the graphically best looking NES games, it introduced enemy absorbed abilities for this series, and getting a game over lets you resume from the level HUB the level resides in. Besides, it's an overall improvement over Kirby's Dream Land.
This is on point for what you were going for. Your mic is great, your voice cadence nice. The editing is good. Honestly if you did this with other subjects you'd have a solid shot at making it big.
I never got my hands on a copy of 1942, but sure put hours and hours into 1943 on the NES. I love it still. I’ll suggest Wizards & Warriors 2: Iron Sword.
I had been toting NESticle 95 with almost 1000 games around for over 20 years, first on a few floppy disks, then on a zipdisk then on a burned CD rom and then a 5 gb thumb drive until entropy got the best of it about 5 years ago and it stopped working.
The mechanical arm in Bionic Commando was a cool way to make the game different than the other 999 side scrolling action platformers on the NES. Kabuki: Quantum Fighter is another such NES game with a cool gimmick that I recommend.
The one that took my heart was 1943 Almost identical on NES, but with killer soundtracks and some other overall slight upgrades Tiger heli was another one I enjoyed, but not nearly to the same extent
My first NES games that I had played and beat were the Megaman games on a anniversary collection for the gamecube during the early Wii era, had lots of fun with it, felt glorious playing the NES games, was kinda sad thinking that the series was canceled during that point. I had a few NES physical games after that and do have Metal Gear and find it to be very hard.

I've heard great things about both of them! Well, Karnov I've heard mixed things about, but Heavy Barrel is one that I hear consistently good marks for!
Just found your channel. I love this video, it feels very like old UA-cam for some reason. I've only played 1942 in arcades but I should give it a try on the NES. I went on your channel so I could see what other videos you already did so maybe your next top 10 could be SNES, Gamecube, or really anything Nintendo related. If you wanted to try something different, maybe PS2, Dreamcast, or Saturn. Or even Genesis/Mega Drive. All of those would be interesting. Or even like a Japanese-only list, maybe no RPGs or text heavy games unless there's rom translations lol. Anyways, subbed!
1942 is a gem !! Thanks for recommending Abido !!! Never tried it, didn't know it honestly. Even though i disagree, i still see the quality of your videos and will be fair with your takes when i agree

I'm actually scripting a video ALL about this right now. The 10 videos have kind of taken priority for me. The easy solution, is to buy an AV to HDMI converter. For my streaming purposes, I use a Retrotink5X, which is phenomenal, but it's definitely an investment.
I'm working on a video called "system shock" that covers how to hook it up to common TVs now, I'm expecting to have it out next week. Keep a look out for it!

I always thought King Dede was lame, NIghtmare sould have been franchise boss.
Yeah, I've played it some, but since I had 1943 as one of my first NES games, the nostalgia factor still gives it the edge for me. Also, I think I have a pic of me and a friend playing that Joint Strike when I got my XBox 360. @@Fortefyre
Mega Man 2 harder than MM1? That's a take I've never heard. MM2 is much more accessible and beatable IMO, and the best game in the franchise. Still, you made a great video. As a child of the 80's/90's, it brings back so many solid memories.
@@Fortefyre The only thing the Seal of Quality meant was that the publisher paid the licensing fee to Nintendo and the game didn't contain boobs, religion, or the ability to microwave a hamster. (In the early print run of Maniac Mansion cartridges you actually could microwave a hamster. Nintendo was not amused).
I needed 30 years to finally beat Mega Man 1 (still used the pause trick to beat the Yellow Devil). It's not the most difficult NES game I've beaten, but it is the one I'm most proud of. While Mega Man 3 is objectively superior (more moves, more variety, more stages, bosses, etc., etc., like Castlevania III is a lot more advanced than Castlevania)... I just like MM2 more. I'll play it and original Castlevania several times more than the 3rd entry. I think you can objectively look at game x and say it's better than game y, but still prefer game y any day of the week.
Come on men, you really suck then, 30 years to beat Mega Man, I would understand if it was Battleroads, but Mega Man. As for Castlevania, I totally agree with you, original Castlevania has nothing on 3.
I had Metal Gear for NES for some years ago. Now I have it on Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection on Switch. And I can told you that Metal Gear for NES is much harder than the original version for MSX. I have finished the original version a lot of times but I can’t finish the tank in NES version. It is so much harder.
Blaster Master? I'm not the greatest at metroidvanias, I get easily overwhelmed by what I can't remember, and drawing maps is tough. I do enjoy the music though.
I played abadox a lot in the 80s and 90s. I think there is a lives code or maybe I used the game genie but I could never beat it. Lots of fun though. And I had life force on the NES.
I didn't like Blaster Master, and I think it's because I simply don't like metroidvania map systems. I did enjoy the inside areas, and it did have some satisfying moments, but I didn't like it.
The MSX2 version of Metal Gear is better. While I like the original Mega Man better than 4 and 5, however, it's rough around the corners. Especially since Mega Man will slide around on all surfaces, the rooms right before the boss have enemies, you need the Magnet Beam to be able to traverse through the first Wily Fortress area, and there's no E Tanks. Castlevania 3 is the best out of the three. It's actually Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest that's the worst.
I miss Shatterhand and Metalstorm in the List I never really understood Sector Z and Pirates i know this both games but i never realy figure out how they work And i like Paridous much more than Gradius

All of my friends had an NES before I did, so by the time I was getting mine I had already played Super Mario Brothers a lot and decided to get a control deck only along with a separate game. I wanted Castlevania but it was out of stock. There were no online reviews so I would have to make a blind purchase...OH CRAP...what if I picked something horrible like Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde??? I agonized and finally rolled the dice on a game I had never heard of and hoped for the best. My first NES game was...MEGA MAN 2!!! Needless to say I was happy with my choice. The only bad part was there was nowhere to go from there but down. In my opinion, the only games on the same level were SMB3 and Mega Man 3.
Bionic commando is an absolute treasure

Mega Man 3
Excitebike
Ivan 'Ironman' Stewart's Super Off Road
Bigfoot
Trog
Smash TV
Contra
Super Contra
Kirby’s Adventure
Castlevania 2: Simon’s quest
Tetris
Metroid
Dragon Quest 1&2
Dungeon Magic
Rad Racer
Blaster Master
Legend of Zelda 2
The conquerer Shingen
I know there were more but that’s what i can think of off the top of my head
That's such an epic list!
Some excellent games but you brought up some I haven’t heard of so I’ll have to check them out! I’m considering of doing some responses to your lists and bring up some games myself. Thoughts on that?
Yeah, just credit the channel. That's all I ask.
Sid Meier’s Pirates had ports to the Xbox (2005) PSP (2007) and the Wii in (2010) per Wikipedia. The PSP version is pretty fun
It sure did! I just mentioned the one I knew. I originally played it on Gametap!
Metal Gear was the first NES game I ever played, and I sank a lot of hours into that game. It's funny considering Kojima hates the NES version of the game.
At least Snatcher wasn't on the NES XD
I have a nes and a genesis but dont have an old style TV how do i make them compatible with a flat-screen????
Thanks in advance
I'm actually scripting a video ALL about this right now. The 10 videos have kind of taken priority for me. The easy solution, is to buy an AV to HDMI converter. For my streaming purposes, I use a Retrotink5X, which is phenomenal, but it's definitely an investment.
@@Fortefyre thnks
I'm working on a video called "system shock" that covers how to hook it up to common TVs now, I'm expecting to have it out next week. Keep a look out for it!
1:57 pretty funny 😂
curious to your thoughts on guardian legend.
It's a wonderful game, underrated gem. I haven't beaten it on stream yet, so it isn't on a 10 list, but it will be at some point lol.
My top list
The Gaurdian Legend: all around great schmup/open world if you like Section Z
Airfortress: also similar to Section Z
BreakThru: quick game
Fire and Ice: Fantastic Puzzle game Solomon key sequel
Shatter Hand: Underrated Beatm up
Mach Rider: ok racer had way more fun creating board in level editor
Rygar: Its Rygar
Pinball nes: The thrill of getting to special board and seeing mario
Kiwi Kraze: Cant explain
Lunar pool: cool underated pool game with interresting mechanics one of a kind
Kirby Adventure with the original final boss nightmare. I always thought King Dede was lame, NIghtmare sould have been franchise boss.
A great list!
Good vid! I prefer 1943 to 1942, though. And gotta have that NES Advantage!
The whole energy gauge for 1943 killed it for me! Have you checked out 1943 Kai? Knowing you, I'm sure you have, but I SLIGHTLY prefer Kai.
Yeah, I've played it some, but since I had 1943 as one of my first NES games, the nostalgia factor still gives it the edge for me. Also, I think I have a pic of me and a friend playing that Joint Strike when I got my XBox 360. @@Fortefyre
Abaddox is totally underrated. I completely agree with you!
It's tremendous fun!
Subbed. Nice presentation man.
Thank you! I hope I can continue to give you amazing content through the new year!
How can you forget Zanac, God Tier game.
Please don't speak to me or my son again. XD
Mega Man 2 harder than MM1? That's a take I've never heard. MM2 is much more accessible and beatable IMO, and the best game in the franchise. Still, you made a great video. As a child of the 80's/90's, it brings back so many solid memories.
Thank you! I appreciate it :)
Most NES games aged poorly, tbh, but there are some hidden gems
I'm not a big fan of NES games in general. For as much "quality control" that Nintendo demanded, they sure let some stinkers through.
@@goldenfreddy-gj5wydoes it matter how long one takes to beat a game. As long as he enjoy the experience of triumph. Old dogs can learn new tricks.
Mega Man 2 perfected the formula and look then a ton of sequels just mildly remixed and tweaked it. It was a WOW moment of gaming to play Mega Man 2.
Oh absolutely!
Where's the master blaster love at!?!?
It was the first game I had to call Nintendo for a tip cause I had no idea where to go.
Too obvious I guess. Like R.C. Pro-Am
Blaster Master? I'm not the greatest at metroidvanias, I get easily overwhelmed by what I can't remember, and drawing maps is tough. I do enjoy the music though.
I would also mention bubble bobble. It's just clean fun but then it's a brutal game to beat haha
I've never heard anyone say Mega Man 2 is HARDER than Mega Man 1. That blew my mind. =)
Haha I do see it that way. I'm weird.
I played abadox a lot in the 80s and 90s. I think there is a lives code or maybe I used the game genie but I could never beat it. Lots of fun though. And I had life force on the NES.
I might have to check it out. I don't want to have to resort to save states but it's a HARD game. Lol
I think if I made a list of 10 NES games you must play would not include any of these.
You do you! I have many more "10s" coming out :)
I’m glad you included Metal Gear. The map that comes with it is pretty helpful.
Agree with all except 1942. The constant beeping is too painful for me to bear.
I dont know what they were thinking with that!
Solid list, though Casrlevania II: Simon's Quest is the tippy top...
I do still enjoy it, contrary to what the AVGN said.
U could've substituted 1942 for blaster master and gradius for batman
I didn't like Blaster Master, and I think it's because I simply don't like metroidvania map systems. I did enjoy the inside areas, and it did have some satisfying moments, but I didn't like it.
@@Fortefyre ok
love 1942 on my playchoice 10
How is the Playchoice-10? I've heard the only major difference is the colorations, but I've never seen one myself.
@Fortefyre I love mine and there is more you can control on the main pcb board but still ear drilling sounds lol mine is the dual monitor full arcade
I really enjoyed mega Mega Man 11. Definitely check it out
Also I love Castlevania 1 the most too. But three isn’t that bad. 😂
It totally bodied me 😂😂😂😂
The MSX2 version of Metal Gear is better.
It's actually Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest that's the worst.
great video thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Play Guardian Legend. It mindblowing you too
Bionic commando is one of my favs
As it should be! It's a wonderful game!
A top 10 worst movie based nes games would be a good one to do. There are tons of those such as Total Recall and Back to the Future in my opinion.
That's VERY much doable. I have a friend who has a complete list of all of them, and I'll glady do one for it!
Awesome! Looking very much forward to it as well as other upcoming content from you. 💪👍
You should do a top 10 rpgs
I'll probably do a "best RPGs I've played to date' video.
They weren’t wall chickens, they were pork chops.
That's what the manual says! Lol.
*tiger heli need to be on this list* 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Duly noted!
I miss Shatterhand and Metalstorm in the List
I never really understood Sector Z and Pirates i know this both games but i never realy figure out how they work
And i like Paridous much more than Gradius
Pirates is criminally underrated!
@Fortefyre I tried it veey often but it is this kind of game where I didn't know what to do where I have to go what I do mixed up with lots of stuff to read and anouing sword duells it never had realy catch me up
Honestly, if I were you, I'd play the modern version of it, it's on steam and it should be relatively cheap. Way better than Skull and Bones lol
@Fortefyre I don't have xbox or PlayStation or such things
I have atari with a big collection of moduls
Nes with a big collection
Snes with round about 150 games
And my newiest is the Evercade Handheld with 15 moduls he has some PlayStation titels like duke nukem and worms
As a fellow bitter old guy with a bad attitude towards change I subbed
Welcome to the party!
If you like 1942, check out Sky Shark. I think it is a better version.
I want to say I've played it!
People who don't like Castlevania 3 only hate it because they're a$$ at it. Castlevania 3 is pure perfection.
In Japan it is. In America we got the fuck-busted hard version and a nerf to Grant's abilities lol.
Funny commentary 😂
Thanks!
nice
No u
Indeed! Track and Field 2 was also incredible once you learned the controls!
I have Contra and then Mega Man 2 in the beginning. Later on it's a mishmash of mediocre to worse game.
@@tr1bes my first 5 games on the NES were mario 1-3, and zelda 1-2
What about The Wrath of the Thunder Anus? Or Little growth big growth?
I'm impartial to Fisting Uranus. Yes that's a game.
If you like Section Z and Abadox I would suggest giving Burai Fighter a try.
Duly noted!
Abadox slaps
It slapped my ass with a spatula. Damn that game is hard but SO rewarding!
starting to watch the video. i bet ive played all. what do you think. like yes. or comment wich one i didnt
Hahaha
gradius 2
Gradius 2, at least the REAL Gradius 2 (not the MSX knockoff) wasn't released on the American NES which is what I cover here today. But I do enjoy it!
Mega Man 2 is most definitely not more difficult than Mega Man 1.
Eh. I didn't struggle with it.
