  • This is a compilation of 3 videos. If you watched the (my) single videos on Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium, you have already seen these. I talk in detail about what each fertilizer does, how it works, how to add it to your garden (I show several products), talk about deficiencies and how the plant looks and give general principles for you to better understand the fertilizers N-P-K. You will fully understand how to use N-P-K in your gardens.

    This is a really useful video. Too many UA-cam vids just tell you to do something, without telling you why. I need to know why I'm doing something, and this video has all the info I need to understand my plants' nutritional needs. Thanks for making it.

    Gary, this is s VERY, VERY USEFUL Video Compilation. I'm going to STUDY this and remember the Numbers and adjust accordingly. I have NEVER Gotten Blossom End Rott. I get some yellowing on the leaves, but I'm quick to trim them out so disease does not start.I grow GIANT Beefsteak Tomatoes, Determinate, and they get HUGE. My largest tomato was 2.5 LBS!!! I LOVE your videos man. Keep us updated on whats new with your shows and ANY information would be appreciated. I Use Miracle Grow ORGANIC, ALL-Natural Fertilizer. it's water soluble and safe for the environment. It breaks down with water and is harmless!!I use Dolmitic Lime, slow-release and ORGANIC Blood Meal. I'm planning on my garden this year, but I always STOP at your videos to keep up on my studies!!! GREAT SHOW MAN!!! GREAT SHOW: you break things DOWN to a science!!!

      I've grown all indeterminate varieties, Box Car Willie, Abraham Lincoln, San Marzano and a few more that I don't remember names of, it doesn't seem to affect my cherry or grape plants. This is a fairly new plot on the south side of our property that used to be lawn I had the soil tested added all that it needed but my tomatoes never seem to ripen completely the rest of my garden is fine and produces well

    Have you seen any lessening of earthworms from using chemical fertilizers in your garden beds? I tend to use both organic as well as chemical fertilizers as well as lots of used rabbit bedding. I have not seen a loss of life in my soil be it in ground or container and my plants seem to thrive. I simply asked because I've heard often that chemical fertilizers kill soil life so, I wondered whether you have ever experienced any soil negatives other than the unfortunate burn that can happen if chemical fertilizer is misapplied? Very informative video bye the way. Thank you!

    Hi Gary,
    Going back to the archives to get a better understanding of fertilizers. Great video. I've been using a granular 5-5-5 all purpose fertilizer every 4 to 5 weeks as a side dressing for peppers, cucumbers, squash and tomatoes . I also used an all-purpose water soluble 8-10-10 a couple of weeks ago. Everything looks great and as a beginner, I'm not so sure if I should keep with this program (water soluble every two weeks, plus the granular every month), or use less of one or the other, or both. Any advice? Next week would be the next application of the 5-5-5. Other than blossom end rot on a couple of tomatoes (I applied your calcium nitrate a week ago), the garden looks good. Thanks!

    I dont have in ground soil (urban living :P) All my plants are in containers. Do you have (or could you make) a video that is specific to container soil fertilization?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  7 років тому

      Yep but I would probably say regular water soluble fertilizer every 10-14 days. If you use chemical type like MIracle Grow use it 1/4 strength. Fish emulsion or other organics use as directed. The container soil should be 50% peat moss or 50% coco core as to hold water. The other 50% can be what you like.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  8 років тому

      +Rick Schulte Usually it is left to compost which means it breaks down into a form that more easily gives nutrients to the plants. Composting also cleans up the waste. I would not use it directly around leafy greens or anything you are going to eat but if you put it around plants that have a lot of growing to do before you harvest, I dont see why not. I have had to recommend 1 I would go with start a nice compost pile of rabbit waste, food waste, etc and use it that way.

    Good vid, have to disagree about inorganic Potassium however. Having started up a series of raised beds, filled with poor clay soil from around my yard I found the potassium deficiency signs you described in my tomatoes, As this was not fully understood until (as a K deficiency) until the plants were fairly mature.
    The soil is VERY heavy clay Potassium sulfate was used quite successfully to correct the K issues, however a double dressing was required to do this due to the very heavy nature of the clay (similar in structure to oxford clay.)
    As 200g of 50% K fertilizer was used per bed I would have had to have used 1.25kg per bed of an 8% K fertilizer to reach the same correction?

      Thanks for the information. Just so I know what to reference... Are you saying you needed more than inorganic potassium. Just want to clarify. Thanks.

    • @74KU
      @74KU 9 років тому

      The plants were only showing what I believed to be signs of K deficiency (no access to soil testing here) as you described, yellowing of leaves lower on plant with green(er) foliage towards to top.
      I suppose the plants may have had access to the sulfur bonded to the Potassium as well (as K as a sulfate is the only way to get it here) but am fairly sure this issue was not present.

    gary, do you ever use the little peat pots to start your transplants? my question is I have several left over from last year, either the plant died or did not do well so I saved the little peat pot. They are rock hard. I submerged them in water both cool and warm and planted some seeds. Do you think the seeds will come up. I just did it today. thanks,gary

    • @hoa9d
      @hoa9d 9 років тому

      How did they do? I would think they will come up alright as seeds only need water on contact to sprout

    for the nitrogen you said to plant lot of bean and chop them and keep the root, so it will make slow nitrogen into the soil. But are been root really that rich in nitrogen?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  8 років тому

      +PouceVert Not that rich but you dont need high nitrogen vegetable matter in your garden. A low a slow steady release helps plants. Most aged compost is like 1-1-1.

    • @evan-oliver228
      @evan-oliver228 8 років тому

      That is what I tough. I was confuse by what you said, it sounded like beans compost would have been more effective on nitrogen. Thanks a lot for your video. they helped like no other! I'm a happy suscriber !

    I just used that miracle gro 24-8-16 last night to water my veggie plants. You said that is too high, did I damage my plants and what can I d to correct it? Is there anyway I can dilute it more to lower the nitrogen? Or just stop using it all together and use water. So if not good for veggies what can I use this high value fertilizer for? Thanks for this video its just what I was looking for!! I also have k gro 15-30-15 is that ok to use on veggie plants?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  8 років тому

      +Venita G You didnt damage them but the nitrogen is high. It makes for a lot of fast leaf growth which can cause issues. Now a days I shoot for a 5-5-5ish. I just found you can save money by using less and the plants do fine. 1/2 is 12-4-8 which is closer and okay. I use somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 strength. The K grow has a nice P number of 30 for phosphorous and that is good for vegetable production but it is high. 1/2 would be 7-15-7. 1/4 quarter would be like a 4-7-4 ratio. Which I like for a garden.

    • @vngudes
      @vngudes 8 років тому

      Ahh.. thank you so much for answering! The plant are still fairly young I started them in mid April so I thought they needed more leaf growth for better fruit production. But now I kow I can cut down the dosage by half or 1/4 thank you so much!

  • @scarletcloth

    Lower the nitrogen unless you want the leaves such as lettuce, swiss chard etc. Correct?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  8 років тому +1

      +Sandra Unkow You want lower nitrogen at times because goal is fruit production. But it varies greatly. LIke the Miracle grow stuff has 20+ nitrogen. Thats too high for tomatoes and I often recommend using it 1/2 strength and even quarter strength.

    • @scarletcloth
      @scarletcloth 8 років тому

      it is an interesting science for sure. Thank you for sharing your wisdom. I am "selling" the mg this year and find your ideas and explanations easy to understand in order to share with others. And I want the best garden ever. I keep planting tomatoes never to see any fruit maybe this is why.

    Do you add worms to your soil? I seem to get really good results. I order earthworms, red wigglers and african worms from eBay and get really good results for fairly low amount of money.

    SOOOO, SOOOO glad I came across your video, very useful info. I have a question and maybe you can be of some help... I believe that my container gardens may have too much nitrogen, I use Miracle Grow and I planted my veggies(transplants) the beginning of this month, I fertilized fed them according to the recommendations on the package, a total of 3 times since May 8th, I feel that was too much I'm getting plenty leaves but not a lot of fruits. Do you know how I could possibly rectify this issue??
    Thanks

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  7 років тому

      Very very possible. Only way is to use MG at 1/2 to 1/4 strength moving forward and skip a feeding.

    Hi, gary would u pls explain about Heirloom and hybrid tomato is it true from hybrid tomato we cant collect seeds and if we do and plant it we might get another kind of tomato,? I was in a seed store in my location the lady says u can only collect seeds from heirloom tomato,I don't know now I guess is mombo jumbo,maybe they need costumers .if u know about this pls explain if u can thank u kindly,,,Bob.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  9 років тому +2

      +GARDENING PLUS Heirlooms and any non hybrid, you can collect the seeds and get the same exact plants. Hybrids, are a cross of two plants. Until the are stable you run the risk of getting a plant that looks like 1 of either of the parent plants. The hybrids are made by crossing pollen of two plants. But I will work on video to explain it.

    Hello, if we use fertilizer for foliar application in irrigation, does it give a positive result?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  5 років тому

      Yep. The water soluble fertilizers can be used that way. I would assume you want a cut strength if you are doing a continuous feed.

    sorry gary, one more question. I am trying organic next year. Do I need to filter the water to go in to the garden. I am on city water with all the chemicals they put in it. thanks,gary

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  9 років тому

      I am not the best guy to ask about organic as I take from organic and chemicals. I would not filter it. I think the time doing so is better spent enjoyrng your garden. If you were to want the water to be better I would fill rain barrels and let it sit a few days. People set the barrels up high and attach hoses to them. Lets gravity move the water. Sitting water will lose its chlorine.

    I have a stock of 20-20-20 fertilizer, it was included in the garden supply I had just won recently. There's also Urea 40-0-0.. Is it not advisable to use? My seeds had just germinated so I have not used any of the fertilizers yet.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      Don't use the 40-0-0. That's more for lawns. Can cut the 20-20-2- down by 1/2 or 1/4 and the plants will have plenty

      I was surprised how crispy it was at the end of the workday. Like mummified banana peel.
