  • Potassium is a macronutrient and that means it is really essential to have in the garden or you won't have healthy plants. It can be added to your garden in many forms like greensand, rock dust or granite dust, banana peels and even chemically. I review what potassium does, deficiencies, forms and make recommendations for adding it to your garden.

    As a new gardener, I know my plants are talking to me. Unfortunately, I don't speak their language very well. Thanks for the garden-ese tips: leaf color, wilting and others you mentioned. I'm thankful that you said a few times NOT to buy any product with chlorine because that was one of the problems I had. I now water with rain water and rarely buy anything from the garden store.

    Gary actually what you called inorganic potassium is mainly used for fruit trees and fruit bushes, where a lot is required in spring to produce bumper crops. For example gooseberry plants need a lot of potassium or poor yield would be generated

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  10 років тому

      Thats good to know. Maybe I should try it out on my kiwi vines that havent flowered for 5 years.

    • @preadp1
      @preadp1 10 років тому

      Gary Pilarchik The fruit book I use suggest the following for caring of kiwi fruit "mulch generously in spring, and sprinkle a handful of general purpose fertiliser and 1/2 oz of sulphate of potassium over the soil under each plant in April. Pay attention to pruning".
      It recommends that Kiwis are best trained as espaliers on horizontal; wires about 12- 18 inches apart. The aim is to create a number of tiers of horizontal stems that will carry fruiting spurs. The vines need to be tied frequently as they grow rapidly, but they must be done after the new shoot has hardened enough not to break when it is bend into position. Tie stems to support, don't allow to twine.
      Prune in late winter or early spring, after the risk of sever frosts has passed (there may be some bleeding but this does not harm the plant) and again in summer. The idea is to continually replace shoots that are older than 3 years old. Also Gary you need two Kiwis , one of each sex in close proximity (ideally planted in the same hole).
      Problems with cultivation such as small fruit or unripening fruit shows that plant is too cold or receiving too little sun. In that case it becomes a greenhouse crop.
      In summer, shorten sublaterals to five leaves beyond the fruit. Cut back any bare, unproductive lengths of growth to five leaves, and any new shoots growing around the fruiting spurs to seven leaves.
      In midwinter, prune fruiting shoots to two or three buds beyond the point where the last fruit was borne. On older vines, cut back three year old fruiting shoots to a dormant bud or new shoot at the base.
      It could be that your kiwi vine is simply unproductive.

    You don’t recommend muriste of potash because it gives off chlorine which can kill soil bacteria. It would seem that you could overcome this by placing the granules into water to dissolve. Chlorinated water can be cleared of chlorine by letting it stand so the chlorine evaporates. That may be an option for dissolves muriste of potash.

    I would really like to see the results if you decide to do any soil tests on your garden because since it’s doing so well you say I’d like to know if in fact it is a far with what they say you need or if it has more or less ....like maybe you could do three different test across the garden and then just look at the the average of all of them

      Im no longer in that garden. But when you feed a garden, you are fertilizing the planting hole, top dressing surface roots, and using water solubles on the plant. It is very different that what you soil tests.

    Thank you Gary. Have you ever heard of a montage mix? That is from a nursery down here. My Son made me 6, 4x4 raised bed boxes for Christmas and I think that is what I will get to fill them this year for my first raised bed garden. I live in SC. where the soil is very clayey, don't know if that's a proper way to say it, but where we live used to be cotton fields and it's very hard to grow anything here. Any response would be so appreciated. Again, love your videos and thanks once more

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  9 років тому

      I dont know what that is sorry. For clay though you really want to break it up and add peat moss or other organic matter. The bottom of the raised bed has to be able to drain water or anything you put on top will almost float and be too wet if the base doesnt drain.

      So I don't think they could totally replace it if you have a good number of plants. But if you have plenty of peels, it would. I would say it would decrease the use of potash and also help the soil biology. I use both.

    As usual your video always contains very valuable information. Thanks for share Gary. Btw, You pointed out about potash contains chlorine isn't good for soil bacteria. So, I am wondering about water from city also contains chlorine. Is that also will kill good bacteria in the soil & have bad effect for plants? What is the solution for home gardeners who don't have water purification for their garden?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  10 років тому +1

      The muriate of potash has a higher level. I don't think chlorine in tap water is as problematic. But I do know if you let tap water sit in the sun it gets rid of the chlorine.

    • @sohansohan1875

      Gary Pilarchik Muraic acid is the old fashion name for Hydrochloric acid so muriate of potash to use IUPAC nomenclature would be potassium chloride, which as everybody knows is the substitute for common table salt in food.

      I heard that as long as you keep the roots warm your tree will be just fine during the winter. You can add chicken, cow or horse manure compost to keep it warm. I just dissolve some chicken poop in water and water my tree every 2 or 3 years. Do not do it more often because it will literally burn the tree. The tree will survive the winter, but if it gets freezing burnt, then just prune off that branch and it'll grow just fine. You'll get added benefits too, luscious growth and more fruit.

    I do use banana peels in my garden (to prevent aphids), but I just got my soil test and potassium is very low (154 instead of 511 recommended). I suspected it, because older leaves do tend to get brown edges. I got a recommendation to put 10 oz of potassium sulfate on 200 square feet by first mixing it with compost or humus for 2 weeks or so, and then adding to the soil. Do you think such a high deficiency can be fixed with more banana peels? Greensand has magnesium and iron, and my garden soil already has too much of these.

    Is it true that if the chlorosis starts on the top leaves it is caused by iron deficiency or an inability to uptake iron? Whereas potassium chlorosis starts on bottom leaves, as you mentioned.

    I work in a school where our children have bananas every Thursday, resulting in lots of banana peel. I run our gardening club and decided to make some banana peel tea in a lidded bucket. I just filled the bucket with the banana peel and topped it up with water then left it to break down for a month. The peel was still visible and the solution smelled foul like nettle tea but there was an obvious breakdown of matter. I don't know if this tea will work on our crops but Garry you obviously have a scientific knowledge about the nutrients plants need. Have you ever used this type of 'tea' to fertilize your plants and in your opinion would it work?

    I just did a soil test in my garden beds, and my Potassium level is High. How do I reduce the levels of potassium or should I leave it alone? This winter I am growing garlic in the bed that has the high level. Thanks.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  7 років тому

      Hello. You cant really remove it but by letting plants absorb it. If it is not causing an issue just let it be. If it is an issue you could and more cheap amendments that don't have NPK. Also go to low potassium or no potassium fertilizers for the year. Really depends on what the number you tested means to a garden.

    Can you ferment the peels in water for a couple of days? Again what would be the ratio?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  9 років тому +1

      +Angely1914 I dont know what a fermentation ration would be but you can put it in a bucket of water and pour it into the base of the plant. There is no exact ratio as you arent dealing with high doses that will burn or damage plants. A couple tablespoons in a gallon is good.

    Question: 2-5-3 in terms of percent doesn't make sense. 2% nitro, 5% phos and 3 percent Potassium. Those percentages only add to be 10%. what is the other 90%? I like to think of it as 10 parts total: 2 parts nitro, 5 parts phos and 3 parts Potassium. Could you please explain this? In font of me I have a bloom buster that says 12-55-6 these numbers only add up to be 73. What is the other 27? is it dirt?

      It is fine to use. I try and stay around a 5-5-5. It saves money. 12 N will give you good leaf growth for greens and kales and such. At some point for things like peppers and tomatoes you want to supply less nitrogen.Please visit The Rusted Garden Seed and Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com

      Organic material has to compost down. Compost is less than 1-1-1 NPK and it is the best stuff around. Low and present is all that is needed for compost.

    whilst clay soil can retain/bank application of potassium much longer than sandy soil, it needs double the amount, as clay binds it up a lot.
    i've been watching agricultural notes on fertilizing and looks like you need roughly 10:1 of potassium to nitrogen/phosphorous. you dont get that information from home gardening shows and you dont get anywhere near required level by using mixed npk garden fertilizer. best to soil test.
    taking vegies and stalks of produce off garden, takes much potassium with it.
    we've been duped by home garden fertilizer makers and gardening tv shows to apply fertilizer by observation, which is horrible guessing at best. we end up guessing to fight deficiencies, which are confusing, rather than applying right amount for optimum warm season crop.

      In the FL sand there is no "good stuff" to begin with. It's been a 5 year journey so far, each year filled with disappointment, learning, and excitement. But we've decided to keep it organic. A few times, I though I might add some inorganic fertilizer, but when I went to the store to buy some, the smell made me do a quick about-face.
