    • @53toddk
      @53toddk 5 років тому +18

      @@lolshatter No, by itself it is not. It could be used as a component of compost. Usable compost contains materials that have undergone thermophilic decomposition (high heat) to kill weed seeds, dangerous microbes/bacteria, etc.
      Worst in my opinion for growing anything that will be eaten is Milorganite, which is a residue from the city of Milwaukee's sewage that has been treated. Things such as heavy metals and some chemicals can survive high heat.

      On the "don't use" side, sewer sludge/biosolids are pretty obvious, but would be nice if you offered some sources for the other "don't use" things you mention instead of, "can be", "may cause", "could be", etc.
      On the "good" side your reasons seem more obvious. Especially the compost tea but I don't understand if it is a dry product you put on the soil or if you are supposed to soak it in water to make a 'tea' and then pour it on the soil. Also, I did some reading on it and the studies don't seem to show any confirmed good results on plants.
      You didn't mention fish emulsion which I hear a lot of people say is really good. But how would fish emulsion naturally have ever gotten into soil? Doesn't make sense.

    There is a brewery just a few minutes from my house that leaves all of the waste (grains and hops) outside for farmers to pick up and use as feed. I swing by a couple of times a year and load up. The spent grains are excellent "greens" for the compost pile. I till them directly into the soil as well. And it's all free!

    My garden is made from a rotted wood chip pile, and its great. I have used it for the last 6 years, produces great veggies. I also use Epsom salts water every other week, and aspirin water on the weeks in between. I make my own insecticide, pesticide and fungicide, no problems so far. I have huge juicy tomatoes, huge potatoes and other healthy veggies that are quite tasty, I'm a farm girl and use newspaper and wood chips on my garden, so at the end of the season, I mix it all together and it's ready for the next spring.

    I do use wood chips but I also like to use logs/branches from around 8 to 15 cm in diameter to create borders and just let them decompose. A good way to get fungi and insects/worms in the garden and you get beautiful mushrooms. I use wood from like the japanese cherry or common laurel or something like that, a soft wood. They are totally gone in 3 to 5 years in the climate I have here. Even plants start growing in the decomposing wood.

    I'm glad to see your still not letting petty stuff like actual science get in the way of your "expert" recommendations. Animal manure, bone and blood meal are cornerstones of organic gardening practices, and have none (that's zero) of the risks you warn of in a commercial form. The only way your pet is going to be realistically harmed with bone meal is if you hit him/her with the bag. Many things are "waste products" and still excellent gardening amendments. Of course you don't have to take my word for it, check any of the hundreds of publications by college agricultural extensions on them.

      A Grayman: Blood meal, and Bone meal are absolutely worthless. The phosphorus in bone meal in not available to plants,-unless it is placed right next to the root zone, which you can't do (unless you are planting flower bulbs) and blood meal is only a source of nitrogen, which may cause top growth...eventually but will do nothing the year you put it down. Understanding science is the 'cornerstone' of ANY gardening . You are simply spewing empirical information with the statement regarding bone meal and blood meal .

    Something I've found that has been working well enough, I use soil I basically made myself of two main areas.
    1) Worm Castings. Worm bin started out with equal parts worm castings, peat moss, and compost. It gets a little bit of small (or crushed) Perlite and Green Sand mixed with it. Sand is good to help clean out the worms digestive system and helps further breaking down digested matter also. All used veggies and green table scraps, with a cover of brown/yellow leaves is all they get fed, and every couple inches topped with more Moss and compost w/ a touch of Green Sand.
    2) Compost. Getting paid to make your own by cleaning neighbor's horse stalls for the animal manure (they eat alfalfa and grass). Layering dead sticks and leaves from around the yard, animal waste, cut grass, and forest compost. Adding crushed dried egg and crab shells, and sometimes a little Peat Moss and Azumite, in between every few layers. Keep it moist, but not wet. Let it bake itself with natural compost heat and turning it every so often before it gets too hot and starts a fire.
    Mixing finished compost, worm castings, and unused forest compost, with perlite for finished potting soil. Plants, or soil, get fertilized with worm casting or compost tea and/or seed sprout tea. Also the waste from the seed sprout tea can be added to worm bin. The only thing i have yet to get a proper set-up of fungal soil. It's just too hot and dry and I lose it, still testing.

    • @clairemcconway6266
      @clairemcconway6266 3 роки тому

      why are you taking soil from the forest (I assume that is what you mean by forest compost)? It's part of the forest ecosystem. Peat moss is also destructive to the environment. Coconut coir is much better...

    • @MrTwisted003
      @MrTwisted003 3 роки тому

      @@clairemcconway6266 I agree, coir is 100% better and is pH neutral whereas peat moss is on the acidic side and better used with plants that require more acidic soil. Givin that I had to work with availability and cost, peat moss fit the bill much better at the time. Oh, and the forest compost is just what it sounds like. There are companies that scrape the floor of local forests which are full of natural nutes and bacteria who package and sell for plant soil.

    Milorganite passes all state and EPA standards. Any potential pathogens are killed in a 1200 degree oven so there is no contamination. And the organic material in the product is made from the microbes used to treat sewage, not the sewage itself. There is no "poop" in Milorganite.

    • @44wizbang
      @44wizbang 8 років тому +8

      Just because Milorganite passes all state and EPA standards doesn't mean it's safe to use growing food. How many times have we seen government approved chemicals turn out to be not safe for human consumption? Just because something has the approval of the FDA, the EPA, or state and local approval there is still no guarantee it is safe. A lot of people have died taking FDA approved medicine.

    Blood meal has the positive effect of repelling deer and rabbits etc. Blood meal gets basicaly sterlized in the process of fertilizer and is a very beneficial amendment as well as contributes a quicker "fix" in tomato gardens for growth as well as a nitrogen starter for beans in particular, Spectacular Contender beans on bad soil organically oh yea, will never have to do again after first season.

      tomatoes need loads of potassium, rather than phosphorus, which is still required though. also need additional calcium applied well ahead of planting time, as calcium always takes months to become available. dont use dolomite lime btw, has too much magnesium for even roughly decent mag:cal ratio. also need consistent soil moisture. bottom end rot can be result of calcium deficiency either directly OR because of swinging/dry moisture levels OR potassium deficiency induced calcium unavailability.
      dont need nitrogen to grow legumes. seeds should come coated with bacteria so they fix air nitrogen into soil. even uncoated seed grown plants will not grow nicely when all but very small amounts of additional nitrogen added as unnecessary.
      get a soil test to find out really how to fix and supplement nutrients for crops.
      most boggy become brick in summer clay soils are hated by beans/peas. usually fixed by big application of hydrated lime worked into soil months ahead of growing season to help fix structure and moisture problems and may need sulphur to correct Ph back down to neutral.

    Hi John- new subscriber, longtime gardener and old school home grower. Just wanted to say thanks for the awesome channel. Love the production quality of the videos , you always have very interesting and knowledgeable guests like Josh and Wendi and lastly I can feel the passion you have for the topics you talk about and as someone who shares that passion I just wanted to say- right on man!
    On the topic of this video I currently and am a longtime user of Ocean Forest {Happy Frog for my seedlings and clones} I amend it with several of the best 6 and none of the worst 6 thankfully lol , the only other thing I add and I find really helps with retaining moisture in the soil is food grade diatomaceous earth. It is said to have other benefits as well.
    You and Josh often ask us to tell you what we do, and that is something I do that I haven't heard you talk much about {but I am a new subscriber and havent watched every video so I could be wrong} so I just wanted to share . thanks again and I look forward to more of your always helpful honest and entertaining videos. 1:20 No.. No.. The soil acts as a filter, i've tested this personally. 250 ppm base water mineral contents, adding fertalizer till 600ppm and the run off from the soil was around 127. You can also monitor the PH of your soil by seeing whether or not the run off water has a higher or lower PH then was put into the medium.
    I love your videos john, but please give advice based on actual science and not speculation.

    In regards to synthetic fertilizers, I think a lot of the problems occur when people use them improperly. Either too much or too little. Planted fish tank people have been using synthetic (see: salts such as KNO3, KH2PO4, et al) for many years with great results, and the plants grow lush, and the livestock isn't harmed. If you read the label of a fertilizer such as Miracle Gro, that's essentially what it is. Ammonium Sulfate, Potassium Phosphate, Boric Acid, Copper Sulfate, EDTA Iron, etc. These are actually essential nutrients for plants and it does them (and you, and the environment) no harm when you use it appropriately.

    I would like to see a video that tells which different fertilizers benefit plants the most in the different stages of life. So lets say you either want to balance your soil after a growing season in preparation for the next year or prepare for heavy flowering. If I was to stop using bone meal to help during flowering because of the reasons you stated, what would be the best option? Soil develops certain deficiencies over time (even organic) so what are good organic target fertilizers?

    • @MrMotionmac

      First you don't want to "fix" soil. If you allow the soil to work as it does in nature, where in the fall a lot material falls and becomes the precursors to compost etc you shouldn't have to do much. It's a living soil and let the soil do what it does. You shouldn't have to do too much except maybe add some woodchips which will help store nitrogen for a long growing season Blood meal, bone meal are all fine within reason. That's part of what feeds it in nature.

    I 've been adding bone and blood meal to my compost for years, I hadn't realized that it could have heavy metals in it, and pathogens, mine is NOT a hot composting, I add stuff a little at a time. I do like to use bunny manure in my compost and as a topdressing. I am pretty sure that people that I get it from feed their buns packaged Timothy hay and pellets of Alfalfa, and likely fresh veggies and fruit. In my composter, I try to soak and get the poos to kinda liquify so that it gets the poo to spread throught the compost, not just stay in the little balls it is in after the bunnies poop it out.

    I love how people commenting on these videos never agree with the information given when the person in the video obviously knows more!

      John is more of a seller than anything. Im sure he is paid a bunch for a lot of his vids . I dont go along with very many of his beliefs either. Rock dust is one of them. how long do you think it will take for that stuff to be plant usable and it aint cheap either. Most of his vids 20-30 min and mostly selling.
