  • Who are the Patriarchs? What do we know about their lives? Jeff Cavins is joined by Biblical scholar, Dr. Mary Healy, to examine the lives of some of the key figures in the Old Testament: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph.
Together, they discuss the trials, failings, and achievements of each man's life. They also weave their stories together to show how God worked through them to bring about his will and eventually the salvation of the world.

As a seminarian, I’ve been reading through the story of salvation again. I am currently talking Christology at the seminary and it was breathtaking learning who Christ understands himself to be in the Bible. It made me just wanted to read through the story of salvation. I am currently at the Patriarchs so this talk was perfect for me. God grant the both of you many years!

I can't believe I sat thru this. I'm not one to listen to anything that's an hour long or longer, but I'm so glad I did this time. I'm so happy I did the BIAY and that I can recall some of the stories and that I did learn some things and that I remember them. Thank you, Jesus. Honestly enjoyed this and even cried. #Blessed. Thank you.

I am a Presbyterian and have read a lot of commentaries on Hebrews. I just finished Mary Healy's commentary and it is one of the best I have ever read. I find it amazing that her work is so pastoral, knowing she has never been a pastor herself. She is such a great gift to the Church!! I am definitely getting her commentary on Mark next.

Mike was talking I was thinking, why do I feel a greater love or devotion to some of the OT prophets than I do to Jesus's apostles. Than I scrolled down and came across this. I am going to listen in. When we say, "G-d spoke to Abrahm," do we think it was a straight forward single message in one shot, or maybe did he receive a series of smaller intuitive notions, that he collected and then concluded over? Sometimes what happens over time is ...over-succinct, for various reasons. Thank you!

Rather anachronistic to impose the modern (secular) concept of 'patriarchal bias in writing' to the ancient Hebrew scriptures, even if that may be a 'point of view' popularly held today. It's not an appropriate theological view because it does not take into account the many roles females played from Eve to Rachel, Esther to Bathsheba, in good and bad ways, to relate the 'truths' about God's covenant relationship, including that of the Blessed Virgin. I would have expected Dr Healey to have corrected that modernist view by offering the Magisterium's accurate and balanced view. To say that Scriptures held an oppressive view of women seems to also take Paul's teaching completely out of context and applying it across the Bible. Gender (or the sexual identity and function) is part of creation and is not part of our eternal expression of fullness of life in God. Disappointed. Divine law stipulates to honour 'mother and father'. The Jewish Talmud and commentaries also never offered oppressive views towards the matriarchs, and women were clearly prominent or key players - whether we think these were to deceive or tempt etc as in the case of Issac or Joseph.
