2018 BMW F90 M5: Problems To Watch Out For - Part 3 FINALLY RESOLVED?

  • In this (hopefully) final part of this BMW M5 series, I go over the issues I was dealing with and how they finally got resolved. After so many days at the dealership, I'm hopeful that the issues (or main issue) finally had a solution. If this would have happened during my first year of ownership, this would have definitely qualified under the Lemon Law. Unfortunately, this came into my 4th (going onto 5th) year of ownership and couldn't really do much, except for hoping that the dealer or BMW central, found a solution.
I hope this resolution ends up sticking, and many of you can use the steps taken with my F90 to fix any of the issues many of you did.

Holy hell, I'm glad everything was fixed & it wasn't something more serious. But also, that is pretty crazy to have all those issues stemmed from a simple leak. I can't make up my mind on a F90 M5 or a X3M for a family car, but issues like this are pushing me towards the X3M with the G80 M3 engine

The expansion tank leak issue was (and I believe still remains) a common issue for the F90 M5. I really LOVED that car - an amazing all-rounder with blistering speeds, luxury and comfort. I've never been in the X3M, but I've read that the suspension is ridiculously stiff. I recommend you test drive both, and make sure that if you end up getting the M5, get one with plenty of warranty remaining.
BTW - I ended up selling mine since the problems did end up coming back....

That last issue is what I am dealing with on my M5 that I just purchased in October. It's in for service now and I thought it was the lpfp at first. However, I got a message from my service advisor today that my expansion tank is leaking according to the tech that was working on it. So I started wondering if the tank leaking could be the culprit as to why mine started having the immediate shutoff after starting and the rough idle as you mentioned. It's because that fluid has leaked down into the injectors and spark plugs. I'm going to change the plugs first of the year. The good thing is the advisor said they found no error codes when they hooked mine up to the computer so I guess that's a plus. However, I think I will be selling this car after a year of ownership and getting something else as this could turn into a money pit very quickly because of these forever-failing expansion tanks.

Yeah, I recommend you sell it prior to the factory warranty expiration. BMW is fully aware of this issue and they CHOOSE not to issue out a model wide recall with an updated solution. My case was never resolved after the last time I went to the dealer, as the issue began reoccurring unfortunately. Initially coolant started spewing into the plugs, coils and bores. They had found corrosion inside the bores, which they tried to clean, but I think it was already too late. Ultimately, after my last visit, as soon as the problem came back, I sold it. Best of luck!

@@RichWithCars very informative video! I am looking into buying an M5 F90 LCI in the next year or so.
From all I have read the main 2 problems of the F90 are the low fuel pump and the coolant expansion tank leak. Is that the case? I haven’t read any other problems really. Seems to be overall a reliable car for its segment.
You said that after the last service the problems occurred again. But you didn’t mention which problems. Did the coolant tank leak again? Was that the repeated problem?

Is that a BMW Warranty or 3rd party? If it’s the latter, which company is it? Great follow up video btw.

😮To fix all that without warrenty how much do you think it would cost to fix all those things you fixed

      @RichWithCars  9 місяців тому +3

I'd probably say about $3,500 - $4,000 at the dealership....if I had to fix all that out of pocket, then I wouldn't go to the dealer.

Why didn’t they replace the injectors ?
    Have you checked them ?

If you need them check out Uro tuning in Tampa I got all 8 for 1200

@michaelmorris1185 The dealership replaced 4 out of the 8 injectors and coils. Dunno why they cheaped out on not replacing all of them. I really appreciate your input and referral, but I already sold the car - I didn't want to keep dealing with the issue. Let alone the fact that I was going to BMW of Melbourne to get it serviced to avoid the nightmare at Fields.

I own an 2018 F80 M3 with Comp Pkg. just out of warranty and now I’m concerned. I don’t live in Central Florida but am down in Naples FL. I hope you sent all this to BMWNA, re how the dealership tried to mislead you with all this stuff. Known or unknown by them just shows how negligent the dealership was. I’m glad you resolved you problems. This why BMW won’t hold much value in resale. I would have expedited better from a true M product? Ive owned 4 BMWs with only one out of warranty, my first 328i, a 1999 inline 6 that was bullet proof, sold it with over 100,000 miles and it ran like a champ. Today seems like BMW has lost its way, ownership out of warranty is a crapshoot. Cheap parts, even within the M division, make for living dangerously.

@De132an I did mention it to BMW NA, and they made not of it. The second dealer I went to in Melbourne was great - I'd highly recommend them. Unfortunately, I'm too concerned about owning this M5 past the warranty period l, which is why I'll be selling it in the next few weeks. The ongoing expansion tank issue is too much of a gamble. I've read in forums that some owners have replaced their expansion tank 2 or 3 times, with the part still failing and cracking after several months of replacement. It's an amazing vehicle, but as you said - there's a reason for the high depreciation

What’s the name of the dealership that treated you like trash? I’d like to know so I’d never buy a vehicle from them.
