I am an out of Texas applicant which HPD. It has not been since November since I submitted my application and talked to a recruiting officer over the phone. He advised me that he turned in my file to his sergeant who reviews all of the out of state applications. I still have not heard back from them about the next steps of the hiring process. Is it normal this to take several months before you can be scheduled for the next steps in the hiring process??
I know this comment is like 5 months old but my husband is also an out of state applicant. He sent in his application before Christmas 2022 and is just now in the last 2 sections of the hiring process. Fingers crossed. It's been a long road. Hope you made it through too!

I heard that cadets are not provided with dormitory. I live in Memorial. It takes about one hour just to get there during the rush period. Commuting would be a big problem for me. Any suggestions? Like finding an apartment complex nearby or something else?
Yeah, a lot of cadets commute for 45min-1hour it’s the Norm in Houston. To Be honest, you might be able to get a roommate with an out of state Cadet. I know a few that room together to save on expenses.
Carter Wop it's called the "Nelson Denny" reading comprehension test, so just Google that and there's so test and practice test online. It's 9th grade level stuff basically, it's pretty easy, the only difficult thing is that you're rushed. You have to do 80 vocabulary questions in 15 min and 40 reading comprehension in 20 minutes. So just be prepared to read fast as hell and answer questions
A lot! Don’t worry or focus on the “fun” stuff... (patrol, guns, mechanics of arrest, ect.) the beginning will be hitting the books every single day. I’d recommend studying penal code. It’s the toughest part for a lot of Cadets. Focus on elements of the crime not necessarily the numbers. Good luck! Oh, and start running NOW! Good luck.
Yes, elements of a crime 2018-2019 edition by Clear. That will simplify things a lot! Tests are tough, but manageable. Just make sure to study and take accurate notes. Also, don’t be scared to ask questions...

I believe you MUST have college credit or Military background. I would suggest contacting a recruiter. I know other Departments do not have a college requirement. However, you must have your TCOLE license - Which, technically is College. You can get your TCOLE license in about 6-10 months. (Depending on part time / full time Cadet) Good Luck!

Every department has different qualifications. Some departments do not require any college. The only thing you need is your TCOLE cert. HCC and UHD offer this program - They have morning classes, day classes, and evening classes. Morning and evening classes are 4-4.5 hours M-F and Day classes are 8 hours.
You can get that at HCC or at the University of Houston - HCC is definitely more affordable. If you go part time, it will take 9-10 months. If you go full time, it will take 6 months. Good luck!
You do not need a TCOLE to apply to HPD. They have their own academy, which you have to attend even if you have your TCOLE. At the end of the academy you take a test and then receive your TCOLE through them. You just need to meet 1 of the 3 requirements - be a veteran, have at least an associates degree, or 3 years of work experience.

I understand the importance of the 1 1/2 mile run, but witnessed not too long ago and i will not name the agency in the surrounding Houston area, a deputy foot chasing a subject and he, the deputy was extremely overweight and frankly could not keep up with the subject at all and quit some time and placed his arms on his waist and was trying to breath. Back up was called and the subject was apprehended eventually. My questions are as follow: 1. On one hand there is a shortage of LEO. If one fails the 1.5 mile run, then they are disqualified, but on the other hand, agencies, not all, but most have obese LEOs that cant run for shit. What is the initial point of the disqualifying cadets that are truly in it for the desire to become LEOs and maintain their physical health throughout their career?

He did the 1.5 mile in 17 min (combination of brisk walk, jog, run, and sprint) despite the pain and he was let go. At the end, he just said, "F$%ck it" and moved on. He has a M.Ed. with years of experience from around the world, speaks 4 languages etc. Someone of his caliber would be a massive asset to any agency.

The recruiting requirement must be sustained. We are trying to get it changed to an annual requirement for all LEOs to pass all physical requirements given to recruits. If your heart is truly in it to be a LEO, you'll do what it takes now and always. In the end, it may be your life up against a strong and well-trained suspect, and you will have to know how to handle scenarios without a firearm or weapon.

HPD is lacking on the recruiting area. It seems there is a lack of motivation in promoting the Department. They don't answers phones, recruiters don't follow up, their Webpage is old and lacks interest;🥱 not to mention pay for recruits, 42K! If they are lacking people, look at the lack of recruiting events and advertisement. Compare it to San Antonio PD. HPD has not grown in decades, it is still 5k officer, and at any given time, you only have 100 plus officers on patrol for the entire city. The rest are admin and "support". How about the motorcycle cops, what the hell do they do?

Tattoos, in general, on arms have not been an issue for several years now. Contact an HPD recruiter for more clarity.

Its always good to start establishing credit - make sure you’re responsible with the credit card. Try not to exceed 30% of its value.
