Great first reaction, welcome to the BABYMETAL Foxhole.🦊
BABYMETAL are that most rare thing, a band doing something new and untried. They brought a fusion of great metal instrumentals coupled with JPop hooks, melodies and aesthetics ... and they have continued to develop and evolve from those beginnings.
For a whole lot of us they breathed much needed new life into music and into metal in particular after it all seemed to be stagnating, so many bands doing the same things over and again, nearly every new band seemingly trying to sound more angry or evil than each other, all growls, screams and harsh vocals and no melody.
BABYMETAL are like nothing you will have seen or heard before, they don't limit themselves to any one main style or genre and you won't be able to pigeonhole or put them in any one box like you can with virtually every other band in the world, they are one of a kind and they invented their own genre and style that nobody has been able to copy successfully (some have tried, none came close) including bringing choreographed dancing to metal (but not as you might know it from pop acts where it is nearly always used just to fill the stage or give you almost naked girls (and boys) to look at to take your mind off often bland music).
BABYMETAL's choreo helps with interpreting the song - a lyric or the meaning etc, but it is designed to involve and lead the crowd, to give them their cues when to jump, shout, pump their fists, chant and so on. They are complete masters of crowd control and crowd involvement.
BABYMETAL are Su-metal (lead vocalist), Moametal and Momometal (backing vocals, harmonies, dance and hype). They are key to what makes BABYMETAL different, they lead the crowd, they give them cues when to jump, shout, chant, pump their fists, sing along and so much more - they are the vital link, the bridge between the crowd and the band and they are black belts in crowd control.
This was Momometal's very first concert as an official member. She had supported Su and Moa as one of three dancers (the Avengers) who filled the third spot since 2019. She was finally revealed as an official member the night before on 1st April this year and here she was, finally with her own headset microphone and able to sing at last.
The original third member, Yuimetal, last performed in October 2017. She missed a whole year, unable to perform for undisclosed health reasons. In October 2018 she announced that she was still not fully recovered and, being unable to perform, she had decided she would leave the band.
Su and Moa chose to continue as a duo for the next 4-5 years through to and a bit beyond their 10th anniversary and only now are they a trio again with Momometal.
When they started in 2010 Su was 12, Yui and Moa were 11. Su will be 26 this week, Moa is 24, Momoko is 20.
They are supported in live shows by the Kami Band - some of Japan's very best session musicians, each one of them a world class instrumentalist. They were phased in gradually from October 2012. The Kami Band members are all world class musicians and BABYMETAL needed them to move to the next level and to start touring the world, but make no mistake - BABYMETAL are the three girls, they had to prove themselves playing for free in shopping malls, a side stage by the food court used for comedians at a festival, tiny venues with a 150 capacity, and they had to find an audience that nobody (except perhaps their producer Kobametal) believed would exist before the Amuse talent agency would provide them with the beginnings of their financial backing to bring in a live band.
They had started in 2010 with little or no budget so they sang to a backing track at the start and when they started doing their own small shows guys in skeleton suits (they were the guys in the photo you flashed up - known as Babybones) would pretend to play the instruments.
The Kami Band may be session musicians with their own projects and bands, so they do swap in and out depending on their own availability, but the same hard core of about 6 or 7 musicians played the vast majority of concerts since they became the full time support early in 2014.
Kami means god or spirit, so in the BABYMETAL lore they are the gods of guitar, bass and drums summoned from the dead by the Fox God to support BABYMETAL - as such they originally wore traditional white burial robes and corpse face paint. At the end of 2017 the robes were changed for black robes and since 2019 the face paint was replaced with masks (nearly everybody wants the face paint back, or for them to just get rid of the masks).
From their first appearance in October 2012 the Kami Band only played at a couple of festivals and the encores in some shows. They became the full time support for all live shows at the start of 2014 and have been with BABYMETAL ever since - but only for live shows, they do not record the studio versions.
In 2019 the Kami Band of the West (American musicians) were introduced and they have been supporting BABYMETAL on their more extended foreign tours since then. It was them in this video - Chris Kelly and CJ Masciantonio on guitars, Clint Tustin on bass and Anthony Barone on drums.
In 2014 BABYMETAL started to tour outside of Asia and Japan for the first time coming to Europe and the US and since then they have won new fans all over the world and become internationally the most successful Japanese band ever and one of the very best live bands on the planet right now (with about 30 international awards to their name to prove that is not just my own opinion) - their 3rd album released in 2019 was the first by any Asian group to reach number 1 in the US Billboard Hard Rock charts.
They do put on a show, as you saw - but those big, elaborate productions are mostly reserved for their big arena shows in Japan. They don't have all the moving stages and so on in the more modest venues they play around the world, but make no mistake, they still put on a great live show every time - they appreciate people have often paid a lot of money and travelled a long way to see them and they want to show that appreciation.
They have nearly 70 songs now, every one of them is different from the last. They have songs in virtually every metal genre but will mix in other musical styles and genres with the metal, often when you least expect it. Some songs lean towards their pop roots others are just good hard metal and they do everything in between - so if you don't like one song no problem - try another, the chances are you'll love it.
'Mirror Mirror' is not the first time they have strayed into the Prog Metal area - 'Tales of the Destinies' was a song on their second album in 2016 and is an homage to Dream Theater (and was praised by Mike Portnoy too).
I hope you will react to more BABYMETAL songs, they will always surprise you and you can't go far wrong with whatever you choose (maybe leave 'Gimme Chocolate' until you are a lot more used to them - or find a good live version). The official videos are all good and worth seeing (a couple are almost essential viewing), but BABYMETAL are a live performance act, that is where they are always at their very best.

@@ADistortedPerception Each song is different so it is likely they will all surprise you one way or another.
Probably one of the most surprising would be only the second song they ever released (so they were very young) called 'Iine' (that is a capital i, not L - so iine pronounced ee-neh).
I think they were making a statement early on that none of the rules on what can be included in one song will apply to BABYMETAL, they will do whatever they want.
Normally I would always say go for live performances - for that one watch the official video (or a very early live performance at the Sakura Gakuin 2011 graduation concert ... actually from March 2012, but linked to the Japanese school year that started in 2011).
Jake Muller has given you a good list to start with - I will second all his suggestions.

Great reaction, thanks and welcome to BABYMETAL.
"Mirror Mirror" is one of my favorites from their newest album, The Other ONE (if not my favorite). And I'm glad you chose this live version because, as you mentioned, they sound incredibly good live. It's what they do, actually. They consider live performances their core business.
As it's been said, they are very diverse musically, as they don't hesitate on mixing any music genre with any metal sub-genre. That makes them virtually unpredictable so my best recommendation is always: expect the unexpected. 😁
I'd like to suggest you their most recent live videos: "Divine Attack " and "MAYA" (from their official channel). And then, you can travel in time back to their origins once you are familiar with what they are and look like now. I promise that early videos will blow your mind up. For me, as a metalhead was a huge musical and cultural shock, not to mention their dance aspect, being an integral part of what they do. I have just seen them live (twice) last week and I it was quite an experience.
    Enjoy your BABYMETAL journey!

Babymetal is... not your regular metal band, but they do deliver a great live experience through metal music for those with an open mind.
They really are metal fusion. Babymetal often is upbeat metal music, which is maybe odd for metal music (other than some niche bands like Alestorm), but it really helps to deliver an energetic fun live experience.

Yeah the shows they showcase on tour is but a fraction of the performances they throw in their homeland and in the UK. But no matter what, those girls are the show and they carry it with them. I would hope to see them throw large performances like this in the states someday. For a band that has been around for a decade, those girls are still young and have a long career ahead for them. So we will see what comes of it. As a saying among the fans goes, “Only The Fox God Knows.” The Fox God being their patron deity in their mythology, and yes, Babymetal has a lot of lore and mythology behind their performances. They are a theater act.

Babymetal has done 2 bigger stage shows outside of Japan, 1 was in the US: Both shows was to promote a new album:
Wembley Arena, near London, UK 2016 for the second album.
And: The Forum, Inglewood, near LA in 2019 for the third album.
Babymetal has been touring a LOT this year and the venues they perform have become bigger over time as well.
Fans think it's just a matter of time for a new big show outside of Japan to promote the next album, maybe in US again or Germany maybe ?

Awesome, welcome...back to Babymetal! Jake and Grinton already gave you a ton of info so I'm sure you're fairly caught up 😁. They are definitely a live performance band at its core, so be sure to check out their live over MV. While their arena shows are always epic, their live shows are always wonderful at festivals and smaller venues on tour. Check out some of the recent fan cams on your own if you like! Babymetal has done almost 100 shows this year: an EU tour with Sabaton and Lordi, a US co-headliner tour with Dethklok, and back to the EU with their own headline tour.
    Suggestions:
1 & 2). Divine Attack and Monochrome from the same concert (Babymetal Begins, Clear Night, 2023): 2 wonderful songs and performances from the more mature, mid-20s Babymetal.
3). Metali ft. Tom Morello of RATM - Their newest release, a bit more of the younger, classic Babymetal feel in a more mature fashion. MV is great for this one, as only fan cams are available for the live (just released in August, so no Pro-Shot Arena videos yet).
4). Road of Resistance (Official, Live 2015): Guitars co-written by Dragonforce, epic power metal anthem. 17/15-year-old Babymetal expertly commands a crowd for an awesome wall of death and circle pits.
5). Rondo of Nightmare (Live, Budokan 2014): Su-metal solo, showcasing her vocal prowess even when she was 16. Also, epic band intro so you get to see the original Kami Band East do their thing.
Look forward to more Babymetal! 🤘🦊

Nice balanced job of the reaction. I felt like you handled it well. Good comments, open mind and yeah BM does put on a show and everybody involved gives 100% at every performance. BM have actually been performing together since 2010 (and two original members are still there. Su, lead vocals, Moa singer/dancer on Su's right. Momo on the left has come on board to take over Yui's spot on the left. Yui left in 2018 for still undisclosed health reasons.) Just so you know the the massive, incredibly elaborate stages are still reserved solely for shows in Japan. Here they generally play in smaller venues. But have played at many festivals to massive crowds. As a side note. I've been listening to metal for decades and no metal band has ever left feeling as happy and positive as Babymetal. And that's a good thing. Their MV's are fantastic quality but to really get the full BM experience I and most fans would agree I recommend their live performance videos.

Ok so this makes sense because I did run across them in Sacramento in 2018 but it was huge 3 stage 3 day festival and they played on a side stage early. They definitely didn't have the elaborate stage setup as I saw in this video. It really adds to the vibe. Thanks for watching 🤘

Welcome & Thanks from Japan 有難う💛。 BABYMETAL is the best musical phenomenon I have ever experienced in my 68-year-long life. (Before BM, I was a stubborn jazz / funk lover) We say "Japan is the country obsessed by Rock Music". The history is very long and the obsession started in 1966 when Beatles visited Japan and held 5 concerts at Budokan. Speaking of hard rock / heavy metal music, a number of bands started to come to Japan since as early as 1970s : Led Zeppelin / Grand Funk Railroad (1971), Deep Purple (1972), Queen (1975), Kiss (1977), Cheap Trick / Van Halen / Scorpions (1978), Judas Priest (1978/79) and so on. Now, any type of rock can be enjoyed here, especially by many all-female or women-fronted bands. They are daughters of American / European rock, for sure. (Many are grand-daughters in terms of age.)
Uh-oh, we also say "Japan is the country obsessed by Jazz". It had started earlier than rock 😄

Great first reaction! 🤘🦊🤘 Thank you for giving BABYMETAL a chance!!! BABYMETAL is a Japanese kawaii (cute) metal group (a metal subgenre that they created) that formed in 2010 when the 3 girls were 11-12 years old (yes, they were very young), and since then have performed with, toured with, or opened for Metallica, Korn, Sabaton, Bring Me The Horizon, Dragonforce, Guns N' Roses, Lady Gaga, Rob Halford of Judas Priest (there's a great youtube video of their performance with Rob at a metal award show), and Red Hot Chili Peppers (there is a youtube video of them performing Gimme Chocolate with RHCP, as well as with Korn, and DragonForce), to name a few of many. They have performed at large metal events/concerts in front of 65,000+ skeptical metalheads in Europe (Glastonbury, Download, Sonisphere, etc), US, and Asia. They are the first Japanese band to perform at Wembley arena in the UK. Also, 20+ awards have been given to them. They have 60+ songs and each one is different from the other, so I hope you give the other songs a try. By the way, they have some really great heavy songs too, and I hope you like guitar solos, as well as bass and drum solos, like I do, because they have them too. Also, they released a new amazing album just a few months ago and they just finished a world tour where they had many shows here in the US. They also just released a new music video for their song called "Metali" that features Rage Against The Machine's Tom Morello. 🤘🦊🤘

hey you should check "Band-Maid" they're a proper japanese all female hardrock band that have various styles ( rock , punk , metal and more ) if you react to this band you can start with their first music video "thrill" and see the evolution of the band by reacting to more and more recent music from them that are mostly way harder than the older ones . If you trust me with this band I promise that you will enjoy listening to them more and more . I almost forgot but great reaction :) .

What a weird first song to react to.
In my opinion, metal enthusiasts should start their BM journey with harder songs.

Shrink yourself and enlarge the video. It’s very difficult to see.
