I saw “chocolate cake shake” and immediately thought Gabriel Iglesias
Gabriel is definitely gonna remake it
Literally the same 😂😂
“It’s gonna happen”
We all did
I think that is actually the restaurant he got it from
I work at Portillos. The amount of cake we put into the shake depends on the ounce size- 16oz gets half a slice, 32oz gets a full slice. Maybe too sweet because you put too much cake/syrup in for how big the glass was?
Anyway, great recreation. Mayo was a great catch, you guys do your research.
Yeah I think it’s too sweet. Tastes too much like standard cake frosting.
this milkshake has lived rent-free in my head for years now, appearing occasionally in the summer when my brain is crying out for a big load of sugar. the idea of gulping down an entire slice of chocolate cake just appeals to me
The shake of the fluffy
Honestly you could do a series on Chicagoland foods. Jibaritos, Maxwells, like four kinds of pizza unique to the city that nobody ever hears about, chicken vesuvio, rib tips, cake shakes, Italian beef, flaming saginaki, mild sauce chicken, the gym shoe, the rainbow cone… It just goes on and on.
this is such a genius idea
Atomic Cake!
no way, you made up half of these
Chicken vesuvio is underrated. A place in Glen Ellyn had it once but stopped. I only saw gym shoe at Flipps (again) in Glen Ellyn. Is it at other places too? I must try them!
@@adammack9744Can confirm these are all real.
As a Chicago native and a former Portillo's employee, this episode brings a tear of pride to my eye.
Your work puts a smile on everyone's face. You deserve a smile too.
Dare you to give the OG recipe
Fluffy’s standup routine on the chocolate cake shake is the whole reason I had to go visit Porrillos the first opportunity that I had.
One of the underrated things about Alvin's videos is when he splits it with everyone at the end so they can take home a piece. Idk why, but I love it
I always love that the end of Alvin's videos is just "I made sure everyone got some." I know you all work together and thus everything is up for grabs once filming wraps but it is just such a great moment to include.
No it's not
During the summer they do a strawberry shake with lemon cake and it is DELICIOUS
Yesssss
7oz of 70% chocolate - "Some will be used in the cake, some of it in the frosting" (the rest in Alvin)
PORTILLOS!!!!! Every time we go to Illinois, nom nom nom!!!!!!!!
Nationwide chain now

They're spreading throughout the midwest
They do this sorta thing at an ice cream shop in Philly called the Franklin Fountain. It’s their “Hot Milkshake” selection, served from late fall to spring.
“I’m tired of chewing but I still want to eat this cake so I’m gonna make it into a drink”
Is that a freakin’ FCCD Spongebob Reference
@@Knockknockitsknuckles1234 yeah
I prefer it when Alvin has guests like Andrew on his channel.
Your comment is better than whatever I was going to come up with
I saw "chocolate cake shake" and immediately thought, "Heck yes, Portillos!"
In the original video at 1:24 there’s a gold medal brand chocolate cake mix in the back, and they use store bought fudge frosting, so if you want to make it at home and similarly to to the original, you can
This is just like Gorbino's Quest. This is the Gorbino's Quest of Babish.
The only video game Gorbino's Quest, I can't believe it.
Every CEO plays Gorbino's quest. I like playing Gorbino's quest
Gorbino mentioned in a banish comment section is not what I ever expected
i didn't know this game was mainstream enough to get 141 likes on a random yt video
@@trustoryz8399 me neither mate.
Ah yes, the cake shake. As if a normal milkshake isn't indulgent enough. But man is it tasty!
normal milkshakes are almost always super lame, arent they?
more boring than a diluted eggnog.
@@gabbonoo Now eggnog with a bit of nutmeg and whipped cream? That's lovely.
“I have now made another mess.” This is also me in the kitchen. 😂
I tried this. It was delicious. It was more than I could do in one sitting so I split it in half and had it a second day. The best part was that as I finished it the second day, there was a big yummy glob of chocolate icing in the bottom of the cup. I felt like a little kid again! 🤣🤣
Blessed to live ten minutes from a Portillo’s despite being thousands of miles away from Chicago 🙏
Alvin with an all time episode idea
And Andrew using the sponsor spot to interrupt Alvin's recipe
Alvin really be feeding everyone in the studio whenever he films.
That Fluffy's Special had me go to Portillo's first thing as I landed in Chicago and it did not dissappoint. Probably cut my life expectancy by 5 years but it was so worth it! 🤤
Turning a mud cake into a freak shake!
I haven’t watched the channel in a while so it was such a shock (in an exciting way) to see Alvin!
I’ve loved his content for such a long time.
Back in the Buzzfeed days with the giant foods and his cooking at home series that he did through Covid!
I love his style of video making and I love that he still makes a mess any time he uses a stand mixer 😂
Just *watching* this video is 430 calories and 117 carbs.
This is the first time I’ve had to go watch the inspiration video prior to this version because I just could not believe my eyes lol
I can’t get over that it’s a 1490 calories milkshake.
Once the diabetic coma sets in you become one with universe for a few glorious moments
i'll have one with everything 😁
Instantly clicked on this, excited to see how it comes out! I have eaten at Portillos at least a hundred times since childhood, love this.
That bubbling on stir was amazing!
Lol, you guys need to invest in leftover containers for how many episodes the food gets divvied up. Definitely a bonus for your employees. I want some of that cake too!
Yeah I like you said that mayonnaise that's in the cake. All it is is oil and eggs and you're already putting those in most cakes. The mayonnaise cake came around when fresh eggs weren't as available during shortages and things like that, there's been times where someone uses the last of my eggs, so I use anything from a banana that I Mash, applesauce. You can use tofu, flex egg, all kinds of things
Seeing this channel covering a place I spent a lot of my childhood eating at, especially trips with my Nana. Really hits different.
I saw cake shake and immediately thought of pie shakes. Core childhood memories right there. A special treat for when we would go to this tiny diner a few towns over.
I don't crave Portillo's too often but when I do it's always the chocolate cake shake OR their lemon cake shake. Just cake shakes in general
The lemon cake shake is a thing of dangerous beauty. Your brain still knows it's a super decadent treat, but the lightness of lemon somehow tricks my tummy into not feeling sick despite being stuffed with a slice of cake blended into a big ol' milkshake after finishing off a Maxwell Street.
Really missing the binging with babish movie/tv foods every Tuesday!
As a Chicago native, this excites me to no end
I’m crying in lactose intolerance land here loving both chocolate and milkshakes!
As a man from Illinois I say; beautiful.
As a Chicagoan, I approve.
Not sure when you'll end up chopping chocolate again, but I would recommend a bread knife. The teeth on it just make it feel like it cuts easier to me...? There's probably some explanation, but definitely try it because a straight edge just feels like it slides too much to me.
smart!
mmm I never thought I'd be able to drink a huge slice of cake, a quart of ice cream, and a pint of mayonnaise in a single glass!! Delicious!!
Had 3 of these last week when i was in Chicago. Absolutely delicious!!!!!
I've always loved the Chocolate Cake Shake but I could never finish one myself. Portillo's is definitely one of the things I miss having moved from Chicago so this is awesome! Now I can make them at home for me and my kids. Thanks so much for the recipe!
I’ve been looking for a recipe for this for a long time THANK YOU!!!!😭
Every video I watch I envy the ppl in that office- everything looks amazing
fluffy had this and it was funny how he told it
Now do their lemon cake!!
Glad to see chicago get some love here.
Always with amazing ideas alvin!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
So glad seeing something I've grown up with getting its due! Best thing on the menu!
I know a lot of places that have started making shakes like this. First time I had one was at the Toothsome Chocolate Emporium outside of Universal Studios in Florida. I had a red velvet shake that came with a giant cupcake on top and my wife had the marshmallow crips that came with a large chunk of rice crispie treat on it
I respect Alvin's commitment to making messes.
So I really like the Anything series, but at the same time out of Alvin's last 10 videos, 9 of them have been Anything. There's still so much amazing Arcade and Anime to explore!
You don't need to add that extra slice of cake. Portillo's doesn't blend the cake thoroughly into the shake so you get chunks of cake and frosting as you drink the shake. Probably the best way to do it at home would be to make the shake without the cake first, then add the cake, and pulse it a lot resulting in some well-blended cake AND chunks.
LOL! I love that you used the leftover ice cream from Andrew's vanilla ice cream video. That's perfect. 😄
That looks delicious. 😋 ❤ I wish I had thought of making this when I baked brownies. I have to wait for next time
I’m going to try this recipe this weekend for my kids.
Its rolled gold/or duncan hines. chocolate cake mix. Extra eggs. Mayo instead of oil.. frosting was duncan hines. Very easy. They just use cake mix.
I've done my time at portillos and made too many of these for them.
I work at Portillos, and I gotta say this is an interesting take on our recipe, I'd be curious to give this a try myself someday! Great video you guys, quite a few of my co-workers are huge fans, keep it up!
Why is the hot beef sandwich like >$20 for one with the cheese and peppers? Wildly overpriced
@@Konarcoffee I think it's a little closer to 14$ with Tax, as for why, no clue. I'm a boots on the ground kinda guy, and the pricing comes from top brass. I wish I had a better answer on that for ya my friend.
"It's gonna happen."
- The Portillo's lady as she walk by with a cake and lock eyes with Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias
I've dreamed of this ever since seeing a video about Portillos!
My mouth is watering this shake looks delicious🤤
SO chocolaty and glorious! Thanks For this 🍫🍫🍫🍫🍫🍫
With each episode, seems less Binging With Babish and more Barely With Babish.
I agree like we barely get a couple episodes with Andrew. The other episode hosts are fine but I feel they are now oversaturating this.
"too much sugar" is exactly how i remember it
This would be another episode of 'Anime with Alvin' making Chiri Kitsu's 'Cake Smoothie' from Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.
I can have a dumb palette at times, so there's no such thing to me as "too sweet" with chocolate desserts.
That looks like absolute bliss 🤩🤩🤩
Absolutely glorious!!! I don't care that I'm lactose intolerant!! Looks like the greatest cheat day ever!!!
Best chocolate cake ever. No contest.
Mayonnaise in cake comes from rationing food in WW2. Eggs were designated for the war effort and thus were hard to come by. However, mayonnaise was not limited like eggs.
Recommendation as a a professional baker. Always start with your liquid and add the dry ingredients in the mixer. You’ll have less mess. Just scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl.
An Illinois tradition: Make a chocolate cake and then shove a slice of it into a cup.
I've been to Portillo's being I live in Chicago but I've never had the chocolate cake shake. This looks yummy.
Oh hey! A hometown recipe! That's cool!!!!
as a Chicago native, potillos is supreme to other fast food places
mayo cakes are the best!!! they stay moist for so long!
Andrew: What do we do with all this leftover ice cream?
Alvin: Leave that to me.
I remember when this was binging with babish, and when I was still subbed
Man, feels like I'd have to exercise nonstop for two days straight after drinking one of these.
I have eaten the chocolate cake at Portillos. It is not a super decadent chocolate cake, but it is also not a grocery store cake. I'd say it is closer to a simple homemade (maybe from a cake mix, sure) chocolate cake with scratch made icing.
Just watching this thing being made rose my blood pressure.
The chocolate fudge in the ice cream basically makes this a chocolate shake with chocolate cake...way too rich. The beauty of the Portillos' cake shake is the contrast between the rich chocolate cake and the vanilla shake. That cake though looks legit!!
Reminds me of a crazy mason's shake. They top theirs with slices of cake or cheesecake, macarons, cookies, and a ton of other stuff.
Mayo is an EXCELLENT substitute for so many bakery goods if you want a more fluffy texture
They actually had shakes flavored after cakes at a restaurant I went to while visiting meridian in Idaho one time
"Oh, it's gonna happen." -Fluffy
I like how Alvin started the trend of giving everybody a piece of whatever he is creating to take home?
As a chicagoan I approve
I just wanna point out that while it is a widely believed rumor that Portillo's uses mayonnaise in their chocolate cake recipe, the restaurant has never confirmed this to be true or false. One thing they have confirmed is true though, is that the frosting used to coat the cake is actually not house made, it's just your typical, store bought, chocolate frosting.
I am fittingly baked for this episode
I see google searches for " does cake contain mayo ect " are spiking 💀😂 thanks for this knowledge
I've wanted this since Fluffy talked about it in his special.
So yummy❤
A staple and taste of home.
Portillos, Chicago’s best fast food spot for sure
Had me at PORTILLOS 🤤🤤🤤🤤
I was about to be so mad if there wasn’t any mayo. My Chicago heart is so happy.
They certainly know how to put the cake in shake
Fluffy would be PROUD!!!!!!!!
