It's car buying .... he's a motor dealer, the guy is only ripped off if he's tricked or fed lies, he wants it gone and is happy to do the deal ...plus ... and this is the important bit, it's a Porsche, but it's an old W reg Porsche, so not worth big money anyhow, gearbox and labour to do this is very, very, expensive..... great for Mike Brewer, because he has a wealth of contacts and expertise to call upon, but for your average guy, this would probably be a no no .... as for ripped off? ... show me a private punter who sees a car that they want advertised cheaply and doesent still try to knock the price down ! ..... Nobody ripped off here.
Boxster is the loveliest car I have ever had. Where I live, it suffers in the traffic jams. It also suffers on the bumpy roads. Living somewhere else, I'd be driving one.
Martti Suomivuori I live in Los Angeles and believe me traffic here is bad and roads awful too ..but I only work 5 miles from home so don’t have to fight the rat race on the freeways ...I love my boxter S ...Irie !!!
Without Ed, I'm just watching a used car salesman scrape the bottom of the barrel for a buck...or an pound...Ed at least brought some education to the show
Love how people are going on about Mike breaking the law this is not a real test drive it’s filmed after they brought it on a closed road the cameras would take hours to setup and if you have trade plates it is quite legal to drive a car with no tax and mot
In England, they have much stricter car inspection. What would pass in the US would be an automatic failure in England. Even a small rust spot could literally devalue a car into scrap. And it gets much more stricter when the car is older.
I own a 986 2.7 manual 2003 facelift and love it 😍 the IMs issue was mainly due to alignment in the shaft itself plus 0w40 was fine in new engines but has they ware it’s a little thin 5w40 or high mileage 10w40 and regular oil changes every 5k would eradicate this issue.ims failure in a 986 with 3k miles 986 with 250k on the same bearing.the ims bearing is a serviceable part cost £900 to replace with Labour a replacement engine £1500 second hand so top down foot down and just enjoy it 👍
Wow can you tell me what’s the best forums and website to go to so I can find some what of a great deal you have gotten. I’m looking to buy a boxster 986 S and need some help oh and how much whas that gear box fix ?
DutyTime22 there are several really good 986 forums - invaluable source of knowledge and advice . Best way I’d to google 986 forums or Boxster forums .👍👍👍
u guys are nuts..i would have done the same thing!! cuz the guy could have easy said no i want 1500 quid thats final. but he took the grand. so how did he rip the guy off
Rene Sanchez we’ll try not to get one that has less 50,000 Miles cause this things were meant to be driven ya knkw ? Also try to get a Boxter S ..they have unbelievable power !! And from what I’ve known is that those are the ones that will not depreciate ...and make sure it’s manual ...the tiptronic ones aren’t that good ..check for the IMS bearing ( you can’t see it ) but ask if it has been changed cause Porsche’s after 1999? I think had a not so great bearing ..Porsche wanted to cut costs ya know ? But it only affects a small amount of boxters ...that’s why you need to drive them to keep oil lubricanting the bearing ..I changed mine and clutch for peace of mind
He didn't lie... he was taking a gamble. What if you got it for a grand then had to spend £4,000 plus, just to get it legal again. It obviously hadn't been maintained so you could be looking at an exhaust, an IMS, new disks and pads, an oil change, a new gearbox even... an oil air splitter, gear oil change, electrical work, door seals, anything or everything on that list and meanwhile the parts and labour are mounting up. You are not going to know if the gearbox fault is due to some minor issue or a bodged service /repair and unless you have ed to fix it for free on a TV show it might not end up being a better deal than just shelling out for a straight cherished example Maybe that is the right price for one in that state?... the alternative is he spends all summer and winter stripping it and storing the bits, listing them one by one on eBay and being dicked about by timewasters and still being left with a boxing day turkey on his driveway until it's a shell and can be weighed in Sometimes you want the thing gone and don't want the daily reminder of a broken dream or a nightmare every time you step out of your front door. They are just cars at the end of the day.
Mike, assieme a Ed ma anche ad Ant,ci hai regalato la più garbata e interessante trasmissione sulle auto e il loro restauro.Grazie,e sempre Affari a quattro ruote.
£1,500 in UK is pretty good for a Boxster with transmission issue, £1,500 Boxster in my country will have to be shoveled up off the ground with a spade.
bluezedd great to hear that . I think you’re right , the guy probably just felt it was going to become a money pit and wanted out . How did you find out ? So no plans for a tv update on it planned ?
He says "I'll take £1250" as a back offer..... I think the words that any sane person in this situation would have been 'Piss Off' or words to that effect. I Bet you the owner was given the money from the Channel (only £500), as to be featured in this programme on air, public consent forms would have to be filled out and he didn't opt for his face to be blurred out. And in this case the owner came around the corner already expecting Mike, unless he was a total ass and took a £500 dive just to be on telly! ;) lol
Murat gençkal yes I would really like to see more - especially the fixing up and sale . But maybe there is no more ? Maybe mike found it to genuinely be a lemon not worth fixing.
Only on tv you can buy a porsche boxster s from 2000 for a 1000 ! Always the same on this show. Mike always buys cars for peanuts. Why would you sell a car like this for that kind of money ?
Totally uncool move, guy already told him lowest price, then again he did have a honking camera in his face, hope the show paid him something, either way - Dick Move Mike!
I have a Boxster S, and it is hands down the most fun you can have with your trousers on. And yes,...one of the downsides of owning a Boxster is putting up with comments from clueless twats about it being a poor man's Porsche, or me buying it because I couldn't afford a 911. I always agree and then ask which year 911 they drive. Oh, you don't actually have a 911?
Exactly, and a 911 Carrera is just a poor man's GT3. There will always be a better car you can get but a Boxster S seems like a very good deal for the prices they are at now.
Dutytime22 - Which stats? from the dealers? whichever it was its irrelevant, the price of these cars are determined by the market and given the risk of failure the price is low and will remain so for those vehicles even if the IMS has been replaced as there is still the overheating problem with no 6 cylinder head flow, never mind the cost of labour to access anything on them. I know because I am a Porsche club and Rennlist member and have heard from numerous sources of the issues and many of the guys have owned and worked on them for decades. My advice don't buy one, period, get a newer model 2009 or later.
marcia menage oh and how do you become a porshe club member? So you don’t think it’s good to get a boxster year 2000 only much later what are the costs of ims failure and what are the most major problems and cost of these problems I’m asking you since your a club member I can get the right information from you I’m hoping thanks
This was a rip-off. Nothing to gamble, as in parts this Boxster was already worth much more than 1500 … sport seats (500+), 3-spoke steering wheel (500+), headlights, etc. Moreover, as the basis of the Boxster engine is the same as the 996, just the engine parts alone are worth over 1,500. Shame on you Mike!!!
This car was worth wayyyyyy more than even 1500. That is a great car and you offered the guy 1000 by telling him it’s a huge gamble?! You are shameless that guy must have really needed money u should have not even low balled him like that when he was already giving u an awesome deal. Like you wouldn’t have gladly payed the 1500? Hope you gave him money for filming him and putting him online rippin him off.
Have you ever even been in a Porsche showroom or owned one? I could say the same about the 10 year old M3s I’ve had.... You are somewhat missing the point. It was made to be accessible to people but still expensive at the time. Like the 135m isn’t an m3 or m5 but it’s not a poor mans choice it’s an alternative that requires less per month and less deposit when new. Where it all breaks down is that some cars fall on hard times and they don’t get loved, the cheaper it is used the more likely this is to happen.
Don't buy one from 1998 to 2007, IMS problem and overheating # 6 and a cracking coolant reservoir. Thats why they are so cheap!!! They are not real Porsches to the purists...
IMS issue goes away for 2006, so becomes a non issue. Never heard of an overheating issue on a correctly maintained example to be honest. The ``Not real`` Porsches is just plain silly talk.
@@jamesmarshall3311 No it is not silly talk all - those models sell for very low prices because of the problems - duh! 10 K to fix failed engine. I am a porsche member and own one (not boxster) and Rennlist member for many years and have a wide source of information, therefore my knowledge is accurate. The IMS issue continues to 2009, prior to that there was a modification to 2007 and 2008 which were temporary inadequate fixes. Are you a mechanic who has worked on porsches for more than 30 years? Obviously the IMS issue is one of the main factors dictating price, however another aspect is the huge volume of sales . The market is saturated with 986(s) so there is lots of choice. If you look at the anniversary addition for a lightly modified 986s it commands a premium, why...rarity which make it more desirable.
Yes the low percentage of ims problems is low , I actually just got a boxter s they command premiums it is a better car more HP and w the drilled slotted brakes same as a 911 , handles better then a 911 and only has a little less jp then a 911 . So to say they are not Porsche’s are assenine . I also got one that had the water pump and the ims bearing done . If you have receipts for it a boxter s w decent mileage is worth what they are low teens . I love mine !o2 s triple Black.
Well done for shafting the guy... you must be proud of yourself....
I hate seeing people getting ripped off. He said it was an absolute bargain at 1500 then offers 1000.
