As for Herodotus bashing Cambysis, note he was writing from a Dariusian perspective, as he was living during Darius's reign and have heard it all from propaganda of Darius court. Darius having killed Bardia, claiming he was an impostor, had changed the dynasty from Cyrus's offspring to his own line, and had all reasons to write history as he saw fit.
Excellent, and magnificent use of an Egyptian source for balance; I wonder if Greek bias was also due to the fact that many Greeks fought for Persia, and this was intolerable for some Greek writers?
Hi, thanks for stopping by. Could be but I think in those days there weren't as anti-Persian as later on under Darius. Great video. Thank you. I know Herodotus is all we have but as you say, he is deeply unreliable as he was a sensationalist common story teller for the Greeks who were the enemies of the Persians. I am inclined to believe them way ahead of the father of the lies.
Yeah I agree. That's why I think it's important to also look at the Egyptian records...this is a classic example of two sides or portrayals of the same person. Another great video Cy, how the son of such a beloved king of king Cyrus became cruel tyrant, or it is just propaganda?, nevertheless we dont know much of the rule of Iranians in Egypt, for sure Egyptians were a lot against this rule or any rule, but somehow i noticed they despised Persians the most.
Yeah, it's strange that there could be such a change from father to son, but it's happened at in other places too - I was writing something about Cypselus for one of my future videos on ancient Greece - he was the ruler/tyrant of Corinth who was universally loved by his people, but his son was the complete opposite and cruel. I'm not saying that the same is for Cambyses... I personally think he may have been stricter with the Egyptians because of all the peoples of the ancient world, I think that they despised being ruled by others more than anyone else. This seems to have been the case ever since the Hyksos invaded many centuries before. I think that Cambyses probably thought that he needed to be stricter to keep them in line, but not to the extent that Herodotus says. Remember, Herodotus was getting his information from Egyptians who probably hated Persian rule and then writing for a Greek audience that had just been invaded by both Darius and later Xerxes just a few decades before, so to make the Persian king a villain no doubt would make his work popular in places like Athens! Looking forward to the next installment as well. It's really unfortunate that Herodotus has many incorrect writings on various things in his Histories. But I believe he tried his best. Even though he says silly things like the Persians believing in the Hellenistic Pantheon and not being monotheistic, Zoroastrians, and the gold digging ants of Arabia.
it seems the wisest decision the son of a great ruler can do is operate on administration and organization within their massive borders. the son of Genghis Khan, and the son of Julius Caesar, spent more time at home, strengthening their empires from within.
Cambyses was most probably disliked by the population because he raised the taxes a lot in order to build his fleet. Which, for an empire, is an inevitable action, but for your subordinates is something very cringe to do. He was deemed a tyrant. The egyptian propaganda is perhaps influenced by this event too. At some point half the damn empire revolted. If it wasn't for Darius the Chad, Persia may have collapsed a century and a half earlier...
I never understood the Egyptian custom of claiming some deity is actually the father of well known royal figures. I guess they mean it metaphorically, but It confuses me.
I wish you would do a short video on the differences of the Greek names for Persian kings versus the Farsi names for Persian kings. Please give a quick summary of the oddities of modern Greek spellings. For example, "b" in Greek is actually "v" and in order for a Greek to write /b/ he has to write "mb". Therefore, Cambyses is CABUJIYA not Cambujia. And Xerxes is not pronounced Zerksees in Persian. And Cyrus is Khoroush. Greek has no "sh" sound so the Persian "sh" is written "s" in Greek. The Greek names are translated letter by letter into most other European scripts; thus no other Europeans seem to know the correct pronunciation of the Persian names.
Okay thank you for recognizing his name I just heard that part that part right now thank you sorry for that but that does not excuse you for the rest of the video by not calling him by his real name

Well, fake news is not a new invention. And Herodotos used to tell quite biased stories whenever the story had Persians in it. This is understandable, since Herodotos lived in a time the Persians had already tried to invade Greece twice and he had been born in an Persian-occupied city.
Yeah agreed. In many other parts of the Histories he does try to give other sides to the same event, but we also have to remember that his work was designed to be read in front of an Athenian audience that was hostile to Persians (for the reasons you stated), so I guess he had to add some sensationalism else it wouldn't sell with his audience... kind of like many media outlets today I guess. Hi, thanks for your comment and feedback, appreciate it. Unfortunately for Cambyses, with the exception of the Behistun inscription of Darius, there are no Persian sources with details of his reign. Herodotus is more of a story/myths teller than an historian
It depends on what the dudes talking about.
@Ghost Ghostwhy do you rewrite the initial comment?
Um... *raises hand* Can you provide some context for 'hurling cats'?
Nic.thanks.. from iran shiraz.pars...❤❤🙏🙏🌹🌹
it seems the wisest decision the son of a great ruler can do is operate on administration and organization within their massive borders. the son of Genghis Khan, and the son of Julius Caesar, spent more time at home, strengthening their empires from within.
The way you read excerpts is so serious and intense, lol 😂
Haha thanks... more to come, stay safe!
I never knew there was so many sources that said he wasn't a deranged killer, good to know!
How do you spell/pronounce Xerxes and Darius names in the native tongue?
Handful of thanks
My pleasure, thank you for stopping by, appreciate it!
Okay thank you for recognizing his name I just heard that part that part right now thank you sorry for that but that does not excuse you for the rest of the video by not calling him by his real name
Old Persian Kambujian older brother of Bardiya younger son of CYRUS THE GREAT
Beautiful painting at Louvre of Cambyses and pharaoh PSAMTEK III executed after being defeated at Pelusium of Jeremiah in 525BC
Cambyses sister Meroe died at Meroe named after her writes Strabo
I will thank you for this for showing the truth as far as the Egyptian opinion of emperor Khambuijia him which I would hold more truthful than somebody I do appreciate that you know it's time to set I'm sorry I want to share another interesting point with you do you know the people of a kombucha are known aare known as the Khamboj or Khamboz of Northern India and punjab
Love it!
Will you ever get to Roman history? Do you have plans for that?
Yes, 2021 (especially the first half) will have a lot of content dealing with first ancient Greece, Seleucids and then segue into Roman history! Might do a video on the Roman conflict with Carthage before that. Thanks for the stopping by, really appreciate it...stay safe!
@@HistorywithCy Awesome, thank you

Thanks for stopping by, really appreciate it. More to come, stay safe!
@@HistorywithCy the sun and the desert is something eles compared to the black skin yall rewrote history if u don't believe this well hey your just the other side as always one thing I'll say say we're they messed up is where they intermingled where they turned on each other two have two pharaohs and also they knew not what they had they should have reached out to the rest of Africa but no they wanted to be truly an independent land also they were on a decline that was their opportunity...smh the end
The supposed other son of Cyrus could not have been named Bardiya. As we all know all Persian names end in s. Herodotus says not some but all Persian names end in S. And this is true even going into the Parthian dynasty. I’ve heard the name Smerdis also given which would make more sense since it ends in S.
Greeks only ad " s" .
Name of the country was Ar-Atta Greeks were questioning the soldier where was their city ...... ? they gave them name of the capital city in Persua !
Most scholars stay away from Herodotus since he is known as the father of lies among historians and in academic circles.
In light of other evidence, yeah agreed. But, you have to admit, he is a pretty fun read! Thanks for stopping by, really appreciate it. More to come, stay safe!
let us not forget that Greeks and Persians were enemies, and Herodotus Maybe influenced by that

The 'sacred disease' is probably epilepsy ... First time I heard if this, it was part of Julius Caesar's story.
Cambyses' entire army was annihilated in Egypt by forces of the Egyptian elite, whose asses were kicked by the Persians, the Magi, and Cambyses there.
Oh no! You left out the bit with the pharaoh's fake daughter!
Haha actually I was going to mention that as well as the use of cats as weapons at Pelusium, but then it would have gotten too long. Maybe I'll do a reading of Herodotus talking about Cambyses... he wrote a lot about him! Thanks for stopping by, really appreciate it! More to come, stay safe!
Hey cy sorry it's not cool if I call you out of your name right so why does intelligent person like you famous by calling this man in history out of his name canbyses wrong Khumbujia th right name i find this done by greek historians ancient but continued western schooling down right disrespectful please cy i hold u in much higher regard then thn that beautiful you make beautiful videos that are quite well explained but you wouldn't trouble you to repeat what the person real name is and for the beginning of video and then call the person to real name for the rest of video hope ya hear me bro do the right thing

@@HistorywithCy Thanks, you aswell. Very interesting topic, I am more versed on egypt than on Mesopotamian civilisations and I only ever heard about Cambyses from the mad tyrant perspective.

All historical reference comes from the greeks ! It's like asking the Chinese to write history of America ! May be, it would be more accurate if Persian historical sources are referenced. This vast empire left a treasure trove of historical record. Someone needs to go and do research and NOT quote the subject of Persians i.e. greeks all the time !
Hi, thanks for your comment and feedback, appreciate it. Unfortunately for Cambyses, with the exception of the Behistun inscription of Darius, there are no Persian sources with details of his reign. Thus, we have to rely on the words of classical writers for much of our information. Trust me, as someone who can read Old Persian, I would love to read Achaemenid and Persian sources, but alas, they don't exist. Perhaps one day they will be found, but until then, Greek sources are mostly all that we have. Thanks for watching!
Greeks and Arab invaders destroyed almost all books and documents.
Dude Jews have made from coward man a great man because his grand father educations allowed him to free the jews . The Persians ruined Egypt... Greeks restored it. Romans restored it. Then Arabs invaded in 600 CE and it has been Persian ever since. Sad.
True Nile ppl in egypt and north sudan are nubian by proof.
@Just Predator Sudan is twice the size of egypt so how come sudan was part of egypt hahahah. You just said the opposite. Egypt once upon a time called Nubian land. Means land of Gold. You ,grandfather or grandmother of arab descent never exiseted at that time in egyp. You were in yemen.
