History of Ancient Egypt: Dynasty XXI - The Start of the Third Intermediate Period (1069-945 BC)

- The glorious era of Egyptian history known as the New Kingdom, when Egypt was the envy of the world, went out with a whimper. What came afterward would be a seemingly tumultuous time in Egyptian history that was characterized by political fragmentation, cultural change, rampant corruption and eventually, foreign domination. Egyptologists call the four centuries of so after the New Kingdom era the Third Intermediate Period.
The Third Intermediate Period started with the rise of the 21st Dynasty of Egypt, a time in which both pharaohs and priests ruled the kingdom of the Nile in relative peace. This though was the calm before the storm that would eventually sweep in from the east and change the trajectory of Egyptian history forever.

No way, I just finished watching the whole series and not even an hour later a new episode drops lol
I've been binge watching for like two days
Exactly the same with me! Crazy timing from Cy.
Same!
me too i finished the egyptian playlist a month ago and need to know what happens next. it's wild thinking everything so far happened before the real life pharoahs in the bible are even born.
Thanks everyone for watching this series and I'm so glad that so many of your are into this stuff, even these lesser known dynasties. I have a lot more on Egypt in general planned for the future, but anything specific you'd like for me to cover in a future video?
@@HistorywithCy how about one on the 22nd dynasty
They are still looking for Herihor's tomb, perhaps intact.... GREAT video, as always❤️
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! Stay tuned for more and thanks for watching!
Boy have I been waiting for this video
Hope you enjoy it and thanks for watching!
@@HistorywithCydon’t worry we love the content more than ever ❤️
My insomnia loves when Cy drops a new video
Nice video, must have been hard to record all of dynasties
Not hard, but takes a while to do the research but I love it as I keep learning new stuff. Hope you're enjoying the series and thanks for watching!
Oh boy! A new video! Can’t believe you’re getting into the later era of Egyptian history! I don’t want it to end! Although there will be some interesting moments in the coming centuries. Including one last hurrah before the Persian conquest.
Thanks, love the enthusiasm! I also don't want it to end as what will I cover after the Ptolemies? Haha just kidding, there's LOTS of topics to cover.
Thanks so much for tuning into these videos, really appreciate it and stay tuned for more!
This channel is goated 🐐 keep up the good work Cy!
Thanks, glad you're enjoying the content and as always thanks for watching!
There is no better guide through the august magnificent world of ancient Egypt than Cy: carry on and be safe!

I could watch these all day. Unbelievably good videos!
Thanks, so glad you're enjoying the series. Still have another 10 to go, stay tuned and thanks for watching!
Love this series. I binged it right before a trip to Egypt and it made the mummies in the civilization museum feel like celebrities
Haha nice, glad you enjoyed your trip to Egypt and hope this series helped. I also get a little star struck when I see some of these things... went crazy when I saw the Law Code Stela of Hammurabi for the first time! Thanks for watching!
Welcome back, Cy! Been a while. Great video as always!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it and the rest is coming up, stay tuned!
Great video, Cy!
Thank you Cy, Keep up the good work!

Thank you for sharing, Excellent content as usual. 👍❤
Another great episode! 💯 This is easily the best series on ancient Egyptian history on UA-cam.
Thanks bro, glad you're enjoying it! Don't know about best but it's definitely proving to be one of the longest running... I think I started this project about three years ago and still have a ways to go!
@@HistorywithCy I remember. Well you’re about to enter the Classical period. We might be nearing the end… in a couple of years 🤣
Anything about the ancient Egypt.. bring it on. Dope channel 🍁💜
🔥🔥 my fav series
Hello my dear brother, I recently came to know about your channel you are doing a very great job , please continue brother. Love from Iraq

Thanks! I don't know about best but it's proving to be the longest... started it about three years ago and still have a ways to go! Thanks so much for watching, really appreciate it!
These videos are so, so good.
Thanks, glad you enjoy them and thanks for watching!
Thank you Cy! Ive been looking forward to this video for a while. Thank you!!
You're welcome, hope you enjoy it!
@@HistorywithCy i thoroughly enjoyed it. One of your best videos yet.
Good video!
Excellent timing
Hope you enjoyed it and thanks for watching!
Great video, you should do a standalone video on Psusennes I, we know a lot more about his time as pharaoh than any other in the XXI dynasty. his solid silver coffin is considered extremely rare and unusual for the time.
Two thousand years! So many yet to go!
❤ Cy!
The rediscovery of Pi-Ramess, the site, and the finding of its disassembled grand stonework and giant statuary parts just happened like a dozen years ago, if I recall rightly ...
Yup, I think there will be at least 7 more episodes in the series, give or take one or two depending on if I decide to combine or spread out these dynasties into single episodes. Yeah Pi-Ramesses was discovered relatively recently, initially I think in the 60s or 70s with new parts of it turning up in the last couple of decades or so. There's still a lot more to uncover like the tombs of some of these kings from Tanis. Thanks again for tuning in, really appreciate it!
Yes one of my favorite series by one of my favorite UA-cam channels! The glory days are behind us now it’s gonna get real chaotic and depressing from here on out for a bit
Thanks and glad you're enjoying the series! Yes for the Egyptians it doesn't get much better overall... but with the Assyrians, Persians and Greeks entering into the story, it does becoming interesting and exciting. Still another 10 or so episodes to go, stay tuned and thanks for watching!
@@HistorywithCy of course you’re absolutely right it wasn’t all chaos and depression for everyone during the Iron Age but for Egypt it most certainly was unfortunately for them
Belle video ❤
You are literally a hero to me.
👍👍👍Great timing Cy, again @ breakfast time☕🍞🧀
Good morning! Hope all is well at your end and as always, seriously, thanks for always tuning in and consistently watching these, means the world!
Good video
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
W video as always
Many people don’t realise that Cy’s cartouche is a UA-cam plaque and a 🧐 emoji and was first discovered in 1836 after languishing in the Louvre
thanks ! waiting for dynasty 26, which there’s an exhibition of at Getty Villa
finally!!
Please do an episode on the history of city of Isfahan.
Please make a video on Hyksus in depth
What would Egypt be like if it was still ruled over by Pharaohs today?
Times have changed so much over the past few hundred years, that it's possible that a lot of the old traditions would have ended up dying out, and the government would probably be a very modern one, perhaps a democracy, with the royal family on the side holding little to no power
What is the point of this question?
Pharaoh wouldn't have survived European colonialism.
Egypt had been ruled by pharaohs for most of her history
Definitely not Islamic
I have been really appreciative of all the content you have provided. If I was to request anything it would be more to do with the Shang Dynasty (really any ancient knowledge involving the area of modern China). Knowledge involving Southeast Asia would be great also. Almost no good content involving the region
Valeu!
Obrigado cara!! Espero que vc esteja muito bem!
*Only* 10 to go!
excelsior!
Please make a video on
Ghaznavids Empire ,
Ayutthaya Kingdom ,
Ayyubid Dynasty ,
Oyo Empire ,
Srivijaya Empire ,
Fatimid Caliphate ,
Almohad Caliphate
Samanid Empire ,
Saffarid Kingdom ,
Ghurid Kingdom
it'd be great know that empires. I don't know even where they were.
If I may, I suggest a book that may help with researching the Third Intermediate Period. It is called Afterglow of Empire by Aidan Dodson.
9:41 I didn't expect this video to make me angry. How is it possible that a statue like this has been graffitied? People are horrible, most of our kind out there have no respect for historical artifacts :/
"it has been over 2000 years since history with cy has uploaded a history of egypt dynasty by dynasty video"
Can't help but think the text of "restoration" of the New Kingdom tombs of Pinedjem should read something like this:
*"Year 6, third month of the second season, day 7. On this day, the High Priest of Amun-Ra, king of the gods, Pinedjem, son of the High Priest of Amun-Ra, Pinakh, sent the chief overseer of the White House, Payneferhir, to loot... uh sorry, I meant to say reinter king Thutmose (II)."*
please talk about khwarazmian empire
I wish we could know how Oskoron the elder actually managed to get to the throne. I mean, we don't actually see the son of a country's worst enemy's leader become the king of that country without warfare, and I think if the Libyans actually invaded Egypt like the Hyksos that would've been recorded. Who knows what happened here... and given that Shoshenq I, the first king of the next dynasty, was this nephew, this means that his family regained the throne of Egypt after some time, which in turn raises some interesting questions.
Wonderful, thank you Cy! As always its very kind of you to produce these videos.
GOD DAMMIT...... now I'll be late for work.
9:38 broke my heart to see how hooligans vandalised this monument
Based
Waiting on the 25th Dynasty
So you're telling me the next one is about the Shoshenk Redemption...
Fugg yeah
oh MY GOD ITS HAPPENING! time to sit my ass down after work
Enjoy and thanks for watching!
Same here! Even though it's 10 hours later. 😉
hello friend
That fact that they were were using old masks and sarcophagus indicates that Egyptians had lost the ability to make them. This shows a massive tech and economic decline was going on.
At least Egypt has finally learned that the wealthy ruling class building monumental projects in the desert is really dumb… wait they’re building what now? Omg 🤦♀️
YES! NEW EPISODE!! LFG Cy!
