I was 10 in '96. I was mocked incessantly and mercilessly because i preferred Beach Boys (admittedly a boy band) over those from the Backstreet. Now, 28 years later, i look back with gratitude because God Only Knows still brings me to tears, and Smile is the very best album (n)ever made.

I was 10 in 1993, and you were supposed to like either Take That or New Kids On The Block, but like you I preferred my dad's 60s music and my mum's favourite female singer songwriters from the 70s alongside classical music. I couldn't get into modern music until I discovered indie music radio shows in the late 90s and heard bands like The Divine Comedy and The Magnetic Fields that make really good music without artifice.
Great music and bad music has been made in every era, but it seems to be getting harder to unearth the good stuff 😢

    Hi Fil,
You are so gracious to try and find the good about Liam’s performance and this song. As you played the first few seconds I could here the robotic mechanical sound. And if he was going to use pitch correction in the chorus why not just start out with and use it through the whole song? Fil, you did a great job with what you had to work with here! I applaud your efforts. Very fair and interesting analysis today. Debbie☮️

      A I is already here.
There a number of different ones out now. There are videos on UA-cam
Showing how it's done. Most of the videos are more like adverts for the programme they are using. I think the people are probably being paid to do the videos. Some say they aren't.
Audimer, vocs ai, Ace studio and others I can't remember the names of. Look for them on UA-cam.
To be honest they don't sound any worse than most pop music nowdays. Which is not very good to me anyway.

Indeed, it does seem to be trending as you described, sadly, as vocalists using auto-tune (other than for a specific effect) lose the vast majority of the human voice has to convey emotional emphasis by deliberately being flat or sharp for emphasis. This is made more dramatic when auto-tune tech is applied to live performances. I don’t blame the artist as much as the producers, promoters and so-called engineers that encourage the artist to use this tech because “everyone does”, “it’s the sound the audience wants” or “this is the way pros do it these days.” For me it is always going to help a singer improve their ability to “hit”desired pitches naturally without the technology. Yes it is a skill that needs to be developed, but it is a skill the best vocalists have, and plays a significant role in why these singers are great. If all singers are auto-tuned, they will all sound artificial and empty compared to those legends made before (or without using) this pitch correction technology.
This is, of course, just my view, and the mileage of others may vary as they say. Auto-tune simply isn’t my cuppa tea as far as what I want to hear and ruins the pursuit of what vocalists are potentially capable of delivering musically and artistically and leaves me unmoved by the artificial “empty” sound that often doesn’t match the emotive expression of the lyrics or the composition.
Yet your observation seems spot-on nevertheless. @@acedegenerate6959

Even in the 1970's I had an issue with the play for pay top 20 radio stations. But the masses would happily suck it up. The rest of us would listen to our records or the local college stations. Then, more and more album oriented stations popped up. But even then, many fell into the same rut. Money has always ruled the music business. Many a band was killed with the multi record deal. Either they didn't have 4 albums in them ( creatively) or they were constantly touring. Then you got a rehash with live albums or a Best of.

1:45 This echoey sound is what caused a heated debate with my nephew. He insisted that it was a natural vocal sound. I said it was an auto tuned effect/artifact.
Is that entire generation (born in the nineties) so accustomed to auto tune that they believe it’s a natural sound?

You have the singers voices being auto tuned or pitched corrected, then you have the people who buy their music being cheated out of hearing the singers natural voice, and you have people who pay good money to go to see and hear that their favorite artist isn't singing live. I personally think that auto tune and pitch correction should be banned, and real singing needs to come back. Excellent analysis, Fil!

In this particular case, I can see how the pitch corrected vocals could have been an artistic choice, to give the song that mechanical, dance music sound. I really don't like that kind of of music, and immediately appreciated the "warmer" sound of the live performance. He can definitely sing very well, and I'm glad that he makes the choice to do so live. I suspect that the decision to use pitch correction on the album wasn't his, because if it was, he would have used vocal manipulation live to replicate that sound for this song. ❤️🇨🇦

Hey Fil - great stuff as usual.
I know it's hard to get to all requests ... but would you consider an analysis of the January 6th "Patriots Chorus" version of the Star Spangled Banner? We all likely heard the original version - it sounded JUST as you would have expected a choir of (alleged) insurgents to sound - spirited but lacking in musical quality.
The version now repeatedly played at rallies and many other functions sounds as though it was performed by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
Count me as skeptical that such musical quality could have originated amongst a group of inmates in a prison yard.
Thanks either way you decide to proceed.

My story is very similar. In 2017, I had the television on in the background while I was getting ready for work when I caught a glimpse of the video for Sign Of The Times - a promotional clip as Harry was getting ready to release his first album
First thing I thought was "what a weird video !" with this guy flying around, but then his voice hit me !!!
I have been a fan of his ever since, and yes, I.had to go and watch all the 1D videos as well.
I was a kid during the 70's, but with older siblings who were into the music of the time, so it was always around me and I still love that era the best to this day.
One of my favourite songs of Harry's, and I am probably going to get into trouble here, is Cherry.
I love ehvery single version - the album, the live version, even down to the raw version you can hear which accompanies the footage of his Vogue photo shoot.

I'm not sure about this approach because live vocal correction can still be there but "weak" meaning because you can spot obvious mistakes doesn't mean there is no correction there, maybe the parts he got right were corrected because they were off by just a bit and not too fast so the pitch correction was able to fix it.
The problem with these pop songs nowadays is they have so many lines which move between too many notes so fast that even live pitch correction cannot help them with it.

I think music like this has a place and time. Even in the 70s and 80s, there was dance music and club music that you wouldn’t call great, but it was fun to move to. There was “AM” radio and the music they played was not something you would listen to when you really wanted to listen to music. You would never go to one of those performer’s concerts. It wasn’t music that moved you emotionally or that you still listen to today. I think this song and artist would fall into that “AM” radio category.

I came to this video right after a Floor Jansen video and that contrast has me a bit less worried about the death of great singers do to autotune. The flattening of vocal color and expression autotune imposes may work for even the bulk of music produced, but cannot be substituted for truly great vocals. In the future AI substitution may over take that but for now I'm not so sure.

On a personal level, I would choose to sit naked on a fire ant hill, before I paid money to listen to this crap. I'm a big Fil fan, and have been for several years now. With that said, it was hard to sit through the entire video. Can you imagine listening to this for 2 hours. I've never been to a show where you're begging the band to please don't come out for an encore.... Yes, I'm just being an old codger. I'm sure this guy has millions of fans worldwide, but it's not my cup of tea.

I'll tell you what's equally confusing, the quite mellow tone of the song and performer in the live show combined with the highly energetic choreography of the dancers doing what looks like a cheer routine. Payne is giving what feels like a low-key performance, while the dancers give off energy that that feels out of step and maybe should go with some other song and singer. The music video that goes with the studio performance is more in line with the song's meaning and mellow tone (it's a dramatically acted/sung story of a man being left by a woman and looking sad, no dancing just anguished looks and angry gesturing in arguments).
This whole situation is as if there are two competing visions for this song, which are switching places between studio and live performances. One, the mellow song and singer, singing with a live tone which makes the song sound much less like a dance track. Two, the heavily pitch-corrected version of the song, which goes with the cheer-routine dancers and the dance track. It's like, angsty ballad material and delivery glued to a dance track.
This guy started out singing Fly Me To the Moon and then was hoovered up into One Direction (upbeat dance track central)? Maybe I'm projecting, but perhaps that explains the confused elements of this performance, including the choice to sing without pitch correction live. I kind of want to see the alternate universe where he went on singing Sinatra and the like.

While rooted in the inadequacies of those who may even have managed success, musically, in a bygone era, *whining* - _never intended as a permanent replacement for true singing_ - has now, tragically, found itself the default setting for those who despite coming up short in the talent department are not discouraged _as they most certainly ought to be_ from taking custody of the microphone and stepping in front of an audience to ''perform"

These songs are for folks whose only use for music is to seem cool-to hold up their phone to a friend and say “Hey, check out [whoever’s] new song!”, listen for about eight seconds, then get back to shouting about something else. Or maybe so they can go “Hey, it’s [whoever]!” occasionally during the seamless barrage of empty noise in a club or bar. Emotional expression is superfluous and irrelevant.

The pitch correction, to me sounds like I have cotton in my ear. When the singer sings quickly, it misses parts of whole notes in my ear. Plus sounds scratchy, which is really annoying. Even if it is used as the music style, it hurts my brain. I am autistic, and a classical musician.. I dont know if that makes any difference. My husband, who is also a musician and plays jazz and punk rock also hears it so strongly that it pains him. He is not autistic.

This type of “music” drives me from the area where it’s being played. It’s simply void of humanity.

Could one use pitch correction to the reverse effect? Can you add little flourishes and set the pitch of a couple notes to land a little flat in order to artificially make it feel more "real" and "human?"
I know what you're thinking, dear reader, "Why do this? Why not just use the original human vocal?"
Well, I'm wondering why the Eagles' sound people don't artificially alter that Desperado vocal that Don Henley pretends to sing to, just a little bit, so that it sounds different every night? You'd obviously do this before the tour even started and have a different doctored vocal ready to go for each night. Nobody would be able to know.
