I drive a 30 ft long Chrysler 300. even though the car has steel reinforcement everywhere, it's a bit disconcerting to see that the only part crumpled like a ball of paper is where the driver is.
I actually was a Limo driver in LA, you wouldn't believe how people act while in one of these cars. If ask them to use the seat belt they get pissed and look at you like your nuts. I drove. 9 passenger stretched Lincoln newer than the one in this video. Dealing with 9 drunk passengers is a nightmare. The other thing is that because they are paying you they think they can treat you like dirt. So if you are in a limo. Please use the seat belt. Don't look at the driver like he's nuts if he asks you to do so. And please try to treat the driver with some respect. We're just trying to make a living doing our job. Also if you are kind to us driver's you'll be surprised at what we will go out of our way to do for you. And $2.00 isn't a tip. In that case keep it, you need it more than I do.
I remember watching this episode with my parents when it first aired on Channel 5 in 2008 or 2009. I remember having to reach for a cushion and firmly place it over my groin after the delightful young woman in the purple dress flashed her arse out the window.
@@Hitemwhereithurtss Reminds me of a "Wonder Years" episode, when the teen boy refused to go to the chalkboard because "my foot fell asleep." The teacher was in hot pants and something ELSE was wide awake!
Me Too! How did they ALL die with no fire or explosion?? Well-at 60 mph and no seatbelt on they probably got thrown. I think buses should have them, too. OTOH, if it rolls, it can smash your head like a pile driver. Even on airport shuttle buses, I try to buckle up (if I can find the male and female ends of the belt.)
Don't order the cheapest limo service? if the limo shows up and its 15+ years old (in the rust belt to boot) immediately apparent that the mechanical state is not tip top. Exhaust leaks) DONT FUCKING GET IN IT!
Being your chances of surviving a 60mph impact into a wall are slim to none no matter what you are driving, belted in or not, I would say that the limo is pretty damn safe for the passengers. Keep in mind that that is a "worst case scenario"... The extreme mass of that limo pretty much guarantees that any other car hitting this thing will lose horribly.
Yeah. He should have fastened the seat belt on one of the dummies in the rear seat to illustrate how a restrained passenger would survive an accident that an unrestrained passenger would not.
Yeah. Based on the video, such a tragic aftermath most likely could have been traced back to passengers not wearing seatbelts. Although it's a legal requirement, the fact that limos have tinted windows makes it very difficult to enforce.
Tests like this are more cautionary than truly enlightening. Because the outcome is just pure physics at play, and would be the same no matter what the vehicle is. If you run anything into a concrete wall, loose contents inside will continue forward motion into the nearest hard surface until energy is dissipated. Be it unbelted occupants, or a belted occupants internal organs. Impact equals splat, so it's best to avoid high speed wrecks all together. On a side note, the limo's mid-section held together very well. Downright tank-like,
After driving stretched Towncars 1M+ miles, it's precisely what I expected. Laws of physics in this type of crash doom the driver, especially as the steering column pushes through his chest.
AgentAndroid the seat belts aren't anchored to the seats, and with your ass strapped down in them, they would barely move any way. It doesn't make any difference. On top of that, very few cars actually have the rear seat bottoms BOLTED into the floor, they just clip into place.
What about when the sunroof is open with a passenger standing up during a crash. Why not a Princess Di with a drunk driver, a woman screaming at the driver and plenty of pillars?
Most people envision crash protection as the resistance to protrusion, i.e. keeping the other vehicle outside your car. That's important to be sure, witness tiny Honda 500 or Smart cars vs. trucks and SUV's. Equally menacing is the sheer 'G' forces. We are reminded of the Lady Di accident, where incredible forces were at play with a large vehicle hitting a concrete pillar. So, at a certain severity of crash, it doesn't matter about the deformation of your car; the forces alone are beyond our survivability. That's why they developed 'crash zones', where the body can fold and dissipate some of the impact. Again, small vehicles have no such area to fold.

@@CycolacFan funeral coaches ferry the grieving loved ones, the hearse carries the coffin, though that is also a heavily modified chassis and would like to see the results
In the UK we sometimes also call the hearse a coach, the car carrying the mourners would be the limousine or mourners car. Likely the same results as shown in the film, front end folds with crumple zones, rear portion intact.

Should do some rear end collision tests on these vehicles. Duplicate what happens if you are hit in the rear while stopped. (like at a stop sign)

Nope. The welding weakens the chassis. Specialist techniques are used when limos are made to prevent this problem arising.
