This reminds me of an accident happened to me exactly in August last year, crashed directly into a 1ft wide tree nearly 100kmh, miraculously survived with only some bone fractures on my face, nose crack, and peeled off forehead skins, the rest were minor body and shoulder injuries.. But thank God and well taken care by family I was fully recovered after 2 months. Life's way more precious since then ❤️
I don't know if he is a distributor or a director of the company manufacturing the said posts, but doesn't matter that much. Being a good leader of a company is as important for the success as having good engineers, developers, workers, administrators, supply chain managers and whatever everything which is required in a manufacturing. Engineers and developers are often very good at designing a part of a product but maybe not a whole product, and probably very bad at selling it. Totally different personality required for the designing and marketing! Any department fails in a company, it will sabotage the success. Beeing a good leader not necessarily means you have to be able to source, manufacture, market and sell the whole product yourself all alone (but definitely better if you know as many aspects as you can). The key is to know what kind of employees you need, gather those people, then know their strengths, and trust that they know what they are doing and organize them to work together.
Driving a convertible is far more dangerous in any crash. Convertibles might be considerably safer nowadays but removing a big part of what protects in a crash is never going to be a good idea (especially if you roll the car!) The best idea if you want to be safe in a car crash is to not drive a convertible.
In my town a guy slipped outside my old school on a motorbike due to an oil spill and then died hitting a lamp post at around 30mph I know motorbikes don't have a crumple zone but he might have survived with a weaker lamp post
A biker died in my hometown hitting a lamppost at around 30mph (he was overtaking a slow car not realising that the car in front was letting another car out a side street, he swerved, coming off the motorbike straight into a lamppost) So many UK roadside signs, lampposts, crash barriers etc are made far too strong and result in pointless fatalities that the whole issue needs looking into (and as soon as possible as this is costing lives!)
@@theofficialstig all these years later the lampposts are still the same and those safer roadsigns are still a rare sight. The government just doesn't care and only go with the cheapest possible solution.

Met Jon Bentley at Festival of the Unexceptional 2022. Very nice man, and he hasn't aged a bit. Whereas I'm wearing about as well as those Rovers. After the impact with the lamp posts.
There was a Saab 9000 that was literally split in two pieces. The front of the car was in the eastbound lanes and the rear of the car was in the westbound lanes. All dead. Queens, NY
In 1981 my uncle Tony was front seat passenger in a Morris Oxford, on his way to a gig, when it hit a reinforced concrete lamppost from the 1930’s, the type that was used to carry tram wires and had a huge cast iron arm to hold the lamp, another words it was hugely over engineered and strong enough to be used as a major support column in high rise buildings, with a configuration of eight 10mm rebar set in concrete with a 2”hollow centre, (no access panel) . The car split in two at the B pillar killing all three occupants instantly, the engine was hurled 60 ft from the lamppost and the destruction was so bad the police it first couldn’t determine the direction of the car was travelling, and of course the lamppost was still standing with hardly had a scratch, Thankfully they’ve now been replaced with standard steel ones but those new flexible ones as shown here are absolute genius and would save dozens of lives each year in the UK
Yes for a while 5th Gear was great, it then changed name to Fifth Gear around the time Jon Bentley left. The informative and useful content started to get dropped as they chased viewing figures. Finally becoming a sort of cheaper clone of the other UK motoring program.
there is a downfall of the "safer pole" in a case of a split sec when walkers are near by and see that car is about to hit them , a real lamp post is the one that can save his life by him just standing behind it.
What if it was a convertible or open car that hit the post? It looks like the pole would come down and wack someone on the head really hard in the car.
As a street light electrician I'm sure street lights are magnets to cars. We have a call out nearly every day from somebody hitting one. And remember there's a high chance the whole column with go live after hitting one.
Witnessed a crash where a Ford Taurus went side first into a lamp post at 50 MPH. It was horrifying, the car instantly crumpled like paper, the driver was dead the second the car hit the pole.
There was a Mercedes amg gtr near my home that crashed into a lamp post and split in half then caught fire afterwards. Amazingly the car built in sos cellular called for help and the passengers were rescued before the car exploded
Can't say I see many of these here in Norway even today.. Most are still steel tubes or solid wood.. Maybe more in the area of Oslo and of course on new roads here and there but not so much the rest of the country.

Note to self: avoid driving directly at lamp posts. It could hurt.
Jolly hockey sticks. We are all thinking the same.... if when removing Guy’s crash helmet, his head came off with it. I did like those Fifth Gear informative video clips, though. Informed as well as entertained.
Where I live in the republic of Ireland, in the town of Tralee there are military surplus ships gun barrels used as lamp and power posts in some parts of the town. They were purchased by the state after the war and have very thick walls that wood have been shot proofed. I know a family here who's son was unfortunate to hit one of these broad side and was killed instantly. They are easy it identify as the post / barrel is formed from necked stages just like you would see on a WW2 battleship. Even after the aforementioned death of a young man, the council still did nothing regarding its replacement for something safer 😱
Canada has shear bolts at the ground level. Minimum damage to a vehicle. A lamp post by my house get knocked at least 4 times a year. It's on an exit from the freeway on a bend. No deaths here.

A girl I went to college with crashed into one at 70 and died instantly. I went passed the accident on the bus not knowing it was her. They really are lethal.
Its funny. Here in America back around 1976-77 ALCOA (Aluminum Corporation of America) ran a PSA where someone in a car veers off the highway striking on aluminum lamp post after another breaking them at the base while the car did not take much damage. What happened since then?
I live in United States and I used to put a lot of that stuff up in Florida in Jacksonville's matter fact it's something you have to realize if they have Breakaway bases that's what lowlights for so it breaks away and falls but you're going to pay for that because they got to replace it and all it's got cheap it'll cost you about $150,000 to replace one
The local council or government could part exchange the old ones for scrap and not give them away for a song to one of their buddies as per the usual government practice after the people paid full up for them.
That pole is an absolute good design! But dammit some nice Rovers 800 to destroy? I am saying this as a Dutchman, too many German cars on our roads, please let the UK design another Rover 800 :)

But actually sometimes they stay and bend that's an awsome detail
same with Need for Speed Most Wanted, well they do slightly slow you down but that's it
In gta 4 you fly out to car

It’s all about money. Like Ford did with the Pinto, the cost analysis cost to pay out on injury/death claims is less than to replace the posts.
Who would claim from the lamppost owner? Surely, it would be the lamppost owner claiming from the idiot that drove into it?
Of course the faster you go the more damage to the occupants and the vehicle. That was very confident of all of you. Congratulations, I enjoyed this.
