It was King Kulmandan ‘Khand’ of Kaski and not King Kulmandan ‘Singh’ of Kaski. It was him who received the title ‘Shah’ from the Mugal emperor and started using it. It is believed that the title ‘Khand’ too which originally was ‘Khan’ was a title received from the Mugals by his ancestors meaning warrior king. The surname ‘Khand’ is still used by the families of then Kingdoms of Bhirkot, Garunkok, Nuwakot etc which lies west of Kaski. And before the surname ‘Khan or Khand’ was used, you will find the surname ‘Ranaji Rao’ used by his ancestors who first migrated from the Rajput family of Chittorgarh, Rajasthan to Ridi Valley of Mid West Nepal which now is located in the tri- junction of Gulmi, Palpa and Syangja district.

This is just speculation but all the dress of kings and queens look like central asian. I have heard that hindu rajputs were in friendly terms with central asian muslim (turkic-persian) kings and courtesans of india (delhi sultanate & mughals). Shah is a title not caste and it refers king.. like Khan was a title back then not caste.. Gengiz Khan Mongol king Michha khad and khancha khad not khan.. Khad are Gandak thakuri and have gotra Bhardwaj. Khad thakuri looks like magar. One can argue why present Shah do not look like magar its because for more then 10 generation Shah king just married princess from india or Rana Chettri. Dont mistake the former king's shah surname as other shah thakuri too many other thakuri also kept surname "Shah" after seeing power of those Shah of gorkha and many people were given title "Shah, Shahi, Singh" by King of gorkha to other people of different districts in order to control all places under them. They come from different background such as Khas and Magar.

The answer to this question is complex and depends on how one defines "Magar." If one defines Magar as a specific ethnic group with a distinct language and culture, then the answer is **no**, the Shah dynasty were not Magar.
However, if one defines Magar more broadly as any person of Magar descent, then the answer is **possibly**. The Shah dynasty's origins are somewhat obscure, but they are believed to be descended from the Khas people, who are an indigenous ethnic group with diverse origins, possibly including parts of western Nepal and India. The Magar are one of the largest ethnic groups in Nepal, and they are believed to be descended from the Khas people.
You are right some evidence to suggest that the Shah dynasty may have had Magar ancestry. As you mentioned the Scottish contemporary writer, Francis Buchanan-Hamilton, contends in his journal that the Shah dynasty was derived from the Magar tribe. He argues that:
"The family of Gorkha which now governs Nepal, although it pretends to come from Chittor, according to Sadhu Ram, a good authority, is, in reality, of the Magar tribe; and, at any rate, these people are now firmly attached to its interests, by having largely shared in the sweets of conquest; and by far the greatest part of the regular troops of that family is composed of this nation."
However, other historians have disputed Buchanan-Hamilton's claim. They argue that the Shah dynasty is of Khas descent, but that they adopted Magar culture and traditions in order to gain the support of the Magar population.
Ultimately, the question of whether the Shah dynasty were Magar is a matter of speculation. There is no definitive evidence to prove or disprove the claim. However, the evidence that does exist suggests that it is at least possible that the Shah dynasty had Magar ancestry.
Given the fact that Magars and Khas Kshetriyas/Thakuris share many surnames (Thapa, Rana etc) and customs, its likely that in medieval times these ethnicities werent so clearly separated or had significant degree of inter-marriages.
Magars and Khas were the predominant people of western hills and Shahs/Thakuris were probably the aristocrats (kshatriyas) within the Magar-Khas society.
Magars don't descend from khas people. At the time of Mahabharta, Khas people were mentioned to be living in western Kashmir

yeah, weird thing is that nepalese school ko social studies didn't mention about how southern Nepal (all terai + some mid part of hills) was part of delhi terriority (delhi sultanate and its successor Mughal empire) for very long period of time. But thankfully, after the demise of Aurangez, his started to crumble down. And nearly 200 years after that, it collapsed completely.

Yes you are correct the meaning of khan means ruler or king and the literal meaning of shah is king .For example before Islamic revolution the King of Iran is knowns
Shah . But of most of the time the title was used by Muslim kings .

This is just speculation but all the dress of kings and queens look like central asian. I have heard that hindu rajputs were in friendly terms with central asian muslim (turkic-persian) kings and courtesans of india (delhi sultanate & mughals). Intermarrying between each other and serving as ministers and local rulers. And that they were turkified. Also, surnames like rana, thapar, shah, etc are majority muslim in india. Many nepali words have muslim origins, like dallal, kalam, hapta, kitab, kursee, hisaab, kanoon, dunya, asali, dimag, etc.. even Bir from bir bikram shah dev means one in turkic. It's interesting how history plays its course.

Dont mistake the former king's shah surname as other shah thakuri too
many other thakuri also kept surname "Shah" after seeing power of those Shah of gorkha and many people were given title "Shah, Shahi, Singh" by King of gorkha to other people of different districts in order to control all places under them.
