- I found what most view as an old Army cot but actually, its a 1952 Civil Defense cot made by the government during the cold war. I made some additions to it that actually makes it like its own free standing hut in the woods!
All these years watching you thinking you were the dad, who would have thought. It's nice to meet your father. You should let him share in more of your videos.
Dad was in a few videos years ago, he's honestly just as busy as Nick and I. I loved having him in this one. Thanks for watching

Like ORC (Occupational Rehabilitation Center), IFB (formerly Winston-Salem Industries for the Blind), and SEKRI (Southeastern Kentucky Rehabilitation Industries), these facilities are non profit contractors employed by the United States Government to manufacture and assemble products for the military and other agencies. The were founded as non-profits to employ disabled Americans and make the famous US Poncho, Wet Weather Field Tarp, one soldier combat shelter, woobie liner-wet weather poncho, and your cot. Some of these companies have been around before WWII.
No prisoners were injured in the manufacture of the cot used in your film. Happy fathers day and thanks for your fathers service.

My Dad was in WW2, was in the second wave on D Day. I have his Military Bible with the dates on it. Also have his German to English Dictionary, his metals and paperwork.
Every summer we would go to “ Tent City”. They had retired and never used Military supplies……tents, cots, new and used military clothing….etc. We took the hour drive to Buffalo, NY. I was the boy that my Dad never had. I still have his Army green tent (12 man). My kids and I still use the cots and tent. I’ve made some repairs over the years.
My Dad and I used the gear for Hunting and fishing trips. I’ve had many offers to sell my tent. It takes at least 2-3 people to set up.
Your video brought back so many memories.

That was a great setup , perfect for the summer time . Just goes to show you don’t need to buy expensive equipment to have fun in the outdoors. That was Awesome being able to have your Father along with you was really special . I hope you will make a point to go out more often with your Father while he is stay able to be mobile considering his age . My Father is about the same age as yours and unfortunately within a year’s time he is unable to go outside and enjoy things because of mobility issues . Life is short enjoy it while you’re still healthy . 🤗

Tent rod ends that keep the ends of the tent rods clean...FANTSTIC! Innovative, simple and should be intuitively obvious, but isn't. The type of inventiveness we have come to expect. In days of old, we made things to last. Today corporations have incorporated a planned obsolesce into most everything we buy. Your guest was a pleasant surprise and your home made shelter is the bomb! Very innovative design to be used with the bike trailer combo.

I believe that's the same type of cots we used in boyscouts back in the 80s. I remember them being old back then.
Many a night was spent on those old cots.

Dave I can’t express how much I love this set up! You can’t beat this for a summer shelter here in the hot, humid, southeast! The fact that it uses repurposed pieces with minimal modification is another great feature. I swear I’m going to make a road trip to shop at your bargain bin! Great to see your dad in front of the camera. Nick is the spitting image of your dad. Can’t wait to see the finished set up with the bike! I love your inventions, you sure have a creative mind! Its good to see your dad, its been a while. Im glad you get to spend time with him. My dad taught me all i know about camping, hunting, fishing, packing horses in the back country, etc. We lost him about 6 1/2 years ago now and I sure do miss our time together

Great seeing you and your dad together. Only thing that would've been better would be to have Nick there, 3 generations !
When you put up the cot you said it was made in '52 and was pretty old. I was made in '53, so be careful with that old stuff. LOL
the cot all looks good so far. You made the tarp that fits great, random poles fit great, looky there you were genius before you knew you were smart ! HA
You might could use some of those spring steel office binder clips to hold mosquito net snug between the poles. Throw a small ground cover under the cot and you could put your backpack under there and stay dry.
All looks good so far. Once you use it you'll know exactly what you need.
It would be great if you could get a trip out with both your dad and Nick.

It's AWESOME! that you are able to spend time with your dad. I pray you are able to do that as much as you want. Now on to the cot. Could you use spring loaded clothes pins, tarps clips, or something along that line to hold the bug net in place to prevent slippage. They could be placed around the tent poles so they shouldn't interfere with the rain coverand would still allow access from the side. Love the cot idea though as i get older comfort means more lol. What an honor Dave. Got to meet the man who brought you up to be the awesome man you are. The dog must have followed along later. I have set up and slept in those cots for months. If they were not well used, putting that last arm on could be a workout. I used to put diesel in tin cans and put each leg in one to keep the spiders and scorpions out. We used to stay in the desert for months at a time and I found huge spiders in my sleep system. Happening once was enough for me. You find some of the best bargain deals. Those DAC (Dongah Aluminum Co. ) poles are the best money can buy. They are thin walled which makes them light, yet alloyed to be strong. They will break but not like standard aluminum poles. That is why I like North Face tents.......they use DAC poles. The stainless sheaths for the pole is genius. Great setup. I recently purchased a couple of Teton cots for car camping and can tell you the lever arm system they have is a game changer for these cots. BTW....at 76 years old I just took delivery of a electric mountain bike and decked it out with waterproof bags that I think give me somewhere around 70 L of cargo capacity. I loaded them up last night with a full compliment of gear, tent, sleeping system, pad, extra clothing, light jacket and barely have room left for food. 🤣 I think what I am going to do is take just the bags out truck camping and bring along some extras just to see what I need to include or get rid of. I have ridden it on hilly gravel roads, hiking trails et. for about 13 miles and can tell you these things are crazy awesome. Have you seen how the bike trailers, like the Burley, hook up to the rear axel of a bike. They have a heavy spring at the hitch which allows some turning forgiveness. Hey Dave,
I still have all my gear from when I was in the Marine Corps. I have never seen the wooden cotts drilled for the mosquito nets. All of our aluminum cott frames already had the holes in them. The frame for the mosquito nets consisted of only 4 dowels , 1 at each corner of the cott, then just put the net over it. There was no additional framing. And the ties just kept the net on the 4 uprights and from being blown off. Great video as always.

Very cool set up. It was meant to be considering the poles, tarp, and bug net all fit. It was good to see your Dad. He is a man of few words. You might be able to make light weight stand offs to keep the bungies from pulling the poles in. Can't wait for you to spend the night in it.

I have what appears to be an identical cot, except in blue canvas. I purchased it 30-35 years ago from LLBean. Like years, it’s in great shape.

Fantastic, l love it. I have two sets of wood frames for the cots and 4 cots. Haha 2 bug nets. What I do is cut a small pole to down from one end to the other that way it doesn’t droop down. Keep up the good work.

Alway a good day in the woods when you have your dad with you. Looks like a nice cozy set up, Could see with a hair bit bigger tarp could be a nice little winter set up as well so you could close up the ends.

Ooh I love this setup! I too have an old cot, a wooden one from WW2, it looks like a little table with some 'harmonicastructure', if you unfold the 'tabletop' you can pull the whole thing out so it becomes a bed with a nightstand. As far as I have been able to find info it belonged to Britisch Army-officers. Also very heavy! so, as I am - like you - building my own biketrailer for camping I'm not taking that on a hike 😅 I do know now why I never threw away the tentpoles that went with some of my tents that were torn by weather... wasn't to sure what to do with them but you led me to some more ideas today. That's a definite scratch built tent. Sometimes, an engineering mindset and some basic knowledge of how to build a shelter and you're halfway there 😊

I've been watching your videos for many, many years and I think this is the first time you had your father on. It's great to have him participate in your video. I really like your cot tent setup. No bugs, fresh air, and you can see any wildlife that comes near your campsite. 🐻🦨🐿🦝🦊🦌🦍

I value seeing your father, and also the contact you have. Because my father passed away at age 84 in 2018. I never had that good of a relationship with him. Too long story.

this was a good video . wooden cots are better than metal or steel cause there stronger and have give. having your dad is a blessing , i walk in my dads footsteps .that old skool netting and tarp are very well made .i like your necker. GOD BLESS

@@Reallybigmonkey1 thank you for your kind reply . perhaps when you build your bike trailer look for 16" or 20" fat tyre's they ;ll move thru the woods easier and i like to use mule tape it has tensile strength over 500 cord .
