This is one of the best videos on this story. Fingolfin is so beautiful here. Especially striking is the moment when he is all wounded, but still ready to fight.
“Come forth, thou coward king, to fight with thine own hand and sword! Den-dweller and wielder of thralls, liar and lurker, foe of Gods and Elves, come! For I would see thy craven face!"
Many years have passed since I last read the Silmarillion, and then I find this video and this one particularly took me back to a time where I used to read it as slow as a slog in order to visualize every single word from that book with intensity. Very well done, you brought me back to my teen years.
Imagine a Gondolin movie with the visuals of Amazon, passion and lore accurate writing of Peter Jackson and the best actors coming to mind to portray this movie into theaters. I dream of that day.
"Then Morgoth hurled aloft Grond, the Hammer of the Underworld, and swung it down like a bolt of thunder. But Fingolfin sprung aside, and Grond rent a mighty pit in the earth, whence smoke and fire darted. Many times Morgoth essayed to smite him, and each time Fingolfin leaped away, as lightning shoots from under a dark cloud; and he wounded Morgoth with seven wounds, and seven times Morgoth gave a cry of anguish, whereat the hosts of Angband fell upon their faces in dismay, and the cries echoed throughout the Northlands. But at the last the King grew weary, and Morgoth bore down his shield upon him. Thrice he was crushed to his knees, and thrice he arose again and bore up his broken shield and stricken helm. But the earth was all rent and pitted about him, and he stumbled and fell backward before the feet of Morgoth; and Morgoth set his left foot upon his neck, and the weight of it was like a fallen hill. Yet with his last and desperate stroke Fingolfin hewed the foot with Ringil, and the blood rushed forth black and smoking and filled the pits of Grond. Thus died Fingolfin, High King of the Noldor, most proud and valiant of the Elven-kings of old. The orcs make no boast of that duel at the gate; neither do the elves sing of it, for their sorrow is too deep."
This passage really shows the greatness of Fingolfin. Not only was he the bravest of the Children of Eru to be the only one to ever fight single-handedly against a Vala out of choice (the other possible contender is his father Finwe, but that certainly was not out of choice and we don't know if he actually fought Morgoth or was just killed straight away), not only did he wound Morgoth grieviously eight times, not only did he call him a coward in front of his own army but when he was exhausted and all but beaten, when Morgoth used his superior power to crush down on Fingolfin with his shield...Fingolfin as a mere Elf was able to push himself back up from his knees to his feet against a Vala three times before finally falling. There's no doubt in my mind that had the opponent been a Balrog rather than Morgoth that he alone out of all of the Elves (and even Gandalf) to have killed one would have walked away from the deed rather than be killed himself, if that is what he could do to Morgoth Bauglir.

Morgoth came, climbing slowly from his subter-ranean throne, and the rumour of his feet was like thunder underground. Can only imagine how good this stuff will be in a few years, let alone a decade. I think we'll get a pretty decent versions of The Silmarillion eventually, with the help of AI
I often think about why Tolkien’s universe has this effect. We find the same or similar deeds in the classical world, epic duels, Hector and Achilles, and who knows how much more. So why is this so passionate, so close? Well, I have always thought that the real reason is that Tolkien’s evil is an absolute evil, devoid of doubt, to be eradicated. Identifying with Fingolfin means being a hero of good, no second thoughts, no doubts. And I think this comes from Tolkien’s experience in the fields of the First World War, when the not certainty of an absolute evil on the opposite side shattered already destroyed motivations, when the oblivion of being just another dead man broke the dreams of everlasting glory. So, I think that in those moments, taking refuge in Arda was a real salvation.
"His hopeless challenge dauntless cried Fingolfin there: 'Come, open wide, dark king, your ghastly brazen doors! Come forth, whom earth and heaven abhors! Come forth, O monstrous craven lord, and fight with thine own hand and sword, thou wielder of hosts of banded thralls, thou tyrant leaguered with strong walls, thou foe of Gods and elvish race! I wait thee here. Come! Show thy face!' " - Lays of Beleriand, "The Lay of Leithian", Canto 12
If you read the books , Morgoth actually was hesitant to come out , but he didn't want to embarass his fellow minions/followers, so he went out and met Fingolfin, yes the fight was brutal, Fingolfin died at the end, but Morgoth was wounded seven time by Fingolfin's sword Ringil, and ever since that day, he was limping because he couldn't fully recovered from that last wound stabbed on his foot.
@@TheCottageofLostPlay you did well in this video, I actually dont have any problem with it , am just adding some details, and yeah if you could have a much detailed version someday it would be great
It is said, after this, Morgoth forever hid in Angband and never dared to answer a duel or fight personally until the Valar came and smote him down.
He allready was unwilling to fight this duel and when the valar came he tried to hide
He forever hid from a duel. Just like Steven Seagal.
Until a big boi with booming laughter came to play.

Can only imagine how good this stuff will be in a few years, let alone a decade. I think we'll get a pretty decent versions of The Silmarillion eventually, with the help of AI

I have longed to see a live action Morgoth! You do a fine job here.
thanks a lot! more videos on my channel!
Tolkien did not believe in the idea of an absolute evil
@@gearben7553 You're right, he did not, as like as the most part of war veterans. I'm just saying his universe is devoid of this internal conflict
Great work!!!

"His hopeless challenge dauntless cried
Fingolfin there: 'Come, open wide,
dark king, your ghastly brazen doors!
Come forth, whom earth and heaven abhors!
Come forth, O monstrous craven lord,
and fight with thine own hand and sword,
thou wielder of hosts of banded thralls,
thou tyrant leaguered with strong walls,
thou foe of Gods and elvish race!
I wait thee here. Come! Show thy face!' "
- Lays of Beleriand, "The Lay of Leithian", Canto 12
If you read the books , Morgoth actually was hesitant to come out , but he didn't want to embarass his fellow minions/followers, so he went out and met Fingolfin, yes the fight was brutal, Fingolfin died at the end, but Morgoth was wounded seven time by Fingolfin's sword Ringil, and ever since that day, he was limping because he couldn't fully recovered from that last wound stabbed on his foot.
yes, this it´s a summarized versions of stories, i would like make it all complete with full details, but i can´t at the moment, maybe someday...
@@TheCottageofLostPlay you did well in this video, I actually dont have any problem with it , am just adding some details, and yeah if you could have a much detailed version someday it would be great
