speaking to the animosity, I think things improved markedly when Paradox took direct control over communication. taking the keyboard away from Mariina and instead having professionals handle the PR instantly changed the messaging for the better. heck, we even finally got an apology. humble communication mixed with continuous improvements will right the ship eventually. if only the game hadn't shipped in 2023, sigh, what an avoidable disaster that was

I gotta be honest. I like Cities skylines. Its even made by Finland my Home Country, but its not something thats 100 % enjoyable for me. I liked Sim City 2013. I grew up with it. Even though it was the worst of the Sim City series I still got many enjoyable memories from playing the game. They had similar issues with the game at the start. But atleast paradox was able to do something by themselves to keep the game up. In the times right about now for cities 2 in 2014 Sim City was falling. EA took control of the game and Im not sure what happened, but I think they just gave up. I would like a continuation to the Simcity series as its more popular for me than cities skylines. Still I appreciate paradox dealing with the developers problems and taking matters into their own hads.

On my midrange Pc it runs well, it did a on launch. My theory is that people who typically play this game are playing it on laptops or something, strategy games are typically light graphically and heavy processor wise, and I think that that means people who play these games typically hold onto their older systems for longer. As a result, a game like CS causes outrage despite the fact that it runs perfectly fine.

It was extremely satisfying going from not being able to afford parks to not even thinking whilst placing down $3.2 million buildings. But now I’m at 90K population the performance is absolute dog water. I’m hitting a consistent 15-20 fps and it will soon be unplayed. As one who's had the game from its disastrous launch state and being a core fan of the original with 1,000+ hours clocked in, yes, it could've released in much better state, but after the whole ordeal with the lackluster DLC being made free alongside a public apology, it seems the game is now steering towards the right direction.
Much needed revamps with the Economy 2.0 patch alongside QoL changes from the unannounced detailer's patch are steering the game towards a better future, and I'm all in for it; content creators are helping list issues and missing features from the game, and the developers appear to be listening, which is a very good sign. Not to mention, the impressive modding community that will build upon this foundation much like its predecessor 8 years on.
While a lot is still to be desired, I am fairly confident they will be able to polish this into a fine gem despite its questionable launch at best. And, of course, the modding community's got its back, too.

Everything you mentioned plus the addition of three more content creator packs and three more radio stations added to the ultimate edition lead me to purchase it during the steam summer sale. Barring any new substantial hurdles there will be a LOT of content in the game a year from now.

    • @AeroKitsavvy
      @AeroKitsavvy 3 місяці тому +3

@@benhoffman8264 Exactly. And there have been notable improvements in performance as well ever since the addition of DLSS tech among other optimisation. Yes, there is still room for improvement such as the parks, schools, and all feeling "dead" (no people playing, going in/out unlike in C:SL1) + the lack of bikes and bike lanes, but I'm sure they will be added as a free patch after a good while.
Economy 2.0 made me play the game more, with my main city reaching 250k pop. It definitely added more much needed challenge and focused on the management aspect of the game, rather than what most dub the game as-a city painter.
Once again, I'm very optimistic for the future of this game, and it would very much be like its predecessor in the modding scene once official custom asset support is added. It has went on sale for certain times during which I would recommend to pick up the game for cheaper.

It’s hard to avoid performance issues when they decided that every single resident in a city was going to be an independent agent. It’s an insane design philosophy which also doesn’t really add anything to the game. With that being said, a lot of us said before the game even come out that “this game will be great in 2 years, thanks for bug fixes and mods”. I still fully believe that to be true. Id say another 6months to a year and we will have the game it should have been at launch. I think the biggest oversight was going from cs1 full of assets etc to cs2 with basically nothing. I know it was more than cs1 at launch but this is not cs1 at launch its cs2! Cs1s predecessor. It should have been cs1 and better, what we got was a better looking game with better tools but not alot to do with those things. If they even dream of releasing this on console they are going to need to more than double the performance. The main reason to play this over cities 1 was that you could finally build larger cities but this is not the case with the current performance.
The recent econ patch has helped a lot but created its own issues with no trucks spawning etc. There is still a lot of issues to work out. Although we are in a much better place than we were at release given the current pace of updates since release it is easy to see the game still being at least a year out from the state it should have released in. Many major bugs still remain since launch, seeing things like the detail patch and also the school assets does really help spread some good faith in the community while the devs take the time to get this game in the state it should have been on release.

I haven't been able to slide back in yet. I want to, I put hundreds upon hundreds of hours in Cities 1 but I frankly don't see a point until the asset importer is at least at public beta phase. I had a couple thousand assets downloaded on the first game, the added buildings in the detailer patch are a good first step but are 8 months late and not nearly enough compared to the volume of what we had in the first game by this point.
While I don't think we'll hit quite the level of content we were hoping for at the first year mark, there is a lot of potential under the hood. I'm following the larger map size mod and the buildable area it's showing is going to be a huge upgrade to even modded CS1. Combine that with community performance updates like we got in the CS1 and the flood of assets we'll get once the importer is working and maybe by this time 2025 we'll have the game we were sold on.

Yours is a fair very summary of where things are ATM. I've had the game since day one and continue to play it. My system is a 14700K, 64G DDR5 4070Ti - so decent enough.
The marketing suggested that huge cities would be possible and my expectation was to massively exceed the population of CS1 (with about 40,000gaminghours in total). In reality, a 300K city (which was less than my 400K+ cities in CS1 with a PC six years older) becomes a pseudo crawl and rather boring. EC2 has improved game play. I converted my 300K city to EC2 quite easily but had to mod it to avoid the homeless bonanza and the 5/5 office bug. Death wave over and there really was little cognitive requirement on me to make the city successful. I decided to start again and, like with my previous city, it isn't difficult, at all, to make money and now, with a 35K population, profits are stupidly high and I am getting bored, again. Rather sad really.
I will continue to play - it provides some relaxation. The biggest stress of the game is the insane amount of power that the PC consumes in order to run the game in such a poorly unoptimised fashion. I can cope with that in the summer months as our PV generates a load of extra power which would otherwise be returned to the grid. In the winter months it's a different matter, as it irks me to have to buy an insane amount of electricity to drive this poorly optimised game.
I doubt if this game will become successful on console. I hope it does but feel that a huge amount of work needs to be done to make it capable on that platform and wonder about the ROI. If the developers ever go there, I hope to see the gains leveraged on the PC platform too - that would give me some future hope.

I am wondering if the performance can really be fixed to an extend where we can build huge cities and still have the game run. We are still playing the base game. They still plan to release a lot of DLCs and then at one point the workshop content. How should this all work out if we all have stability problems with cities at 100 k inhabitants. The performance would have to improve big time. I'm a bit of a pessimist here. I think that the problems lie so deep in the core of the game programming that I can't imagine that it will ever live up to what was promised to us.

The game is going great, but considering it's not a live service type of game, the development rate is slower than what it needs to be. Too many kinks and bumps on systems that should have really been refined even before the game hit the steam store. My main gripe with the game is the current grid based plot system that just feels outdated... after playing manor lords I feel like the system they use there is the future for city builder games, it feels much more natural and dynamic with little user input. Also why don't we have a "road edit" tool? I'm sick and tired of messing around with elevated highways for 20 minutes just to move my camera and realize it looks like trash and have to re draw it again (thank god for MoveIt)

I've only bought around 30 tiles out of hundreds and my plan was to fill out the whole map and make nyc, but hey! it's like an actual city, it's going to take centuries to reach a million population! got to hand it to paradox, real and true to simulation! Lack of traffic controls, such as pedestrians overpass over big roads, no cycling. Taxing tiles is stupid if you are supposed to be some kind major. • @LilyMoonWitch
      @LilyMoonWitch Місяць тому +1

      No. Just... no.
Its silly to compare games in that way, because different companies have different goals for their games post-launch. A game with zero planned DLC/expansions or significant updates, for example (which up until recently has been the norm for games), should be treated differently than a game that the company plans to keep updated and use as a base for DLC. The drop in player count is massively important to one, not so for the other.
A company, such as Larian, that makes a game like Baldur's Gate 3 and aims to make profit through a single transaction doesn't need to care about retaining players - as long as people buy the game, that's enough. They never planned to release any DLC and thus, would see no more profit from retaining players.
Games such as Cities Skylines 2 need to retain as many players as possible, more so than other games, because they plan to make more money through DLC. This is how companies such as Paradox and Bethesda do things - release a game, make money, release DLC, make more money. That DLC only sells if people are still playing their game. That means retaining players is far more important to them, and their failure to do so cannot simply be disregarded. Its why Bethesda put so much emphasis on wanting players to be playing Starfield 10 years from now - because retaining players for 10 years means a lot of sold DLC and paid mods.
As such, you can't just compare games like Cities Skylines 2 and Starfield, games that want to retain players, to games that do not try at all to retain players.

  • @FrasierCraft

What kills it for me is all the game breaking bugs. Say people that can't even play, or people that experience the game crashing to desktop at random intervals for seemingly no reason with no error message.
Or for instance the homeless bug, where citizens are stuck in a limbo state, thousands of them, not seeking a new home, but hindering residential demand.
Or the fact that public transport is bugged, where say "40 000 citizens use the bus", but 38 000 actually dont, they actually use their cars.
or the taxi bug, where you connect a new highway, and outside taxis (not your own) comes not in the thousands, but millions, and starts hindering traffic.
The fact that at this point in the game, there is no crime what so ever. Tourism doesn't work, and commercial districts don't make hotels no matter what.
And after you hit somewhere between 80-150k, the game stops demanding new residentials, and instead the population declines over the years, until your city dies out eventually.
Yeah the game is great if you are planning on playing it for a very few hours, or only develop your city to say 50k population. But if you put 15-20 hours into a save, just to have it be broken and unplayable, well, a lot of us CS1 fans are left with a bitter taste in our mouth.
Most of us really dont give a flying F about content. The base game has a great foundation as it is. What most of us want, is a game that is playable for hours upon hours without breaking.
If they'd be able to deliver that, I'd reckon the reviews would land in the 80% positive side, instead of only 53% as it stands today.

After the KSP2 fiasco I am very hesitant about buying a game that doesn't function like it has to yet. Maybe later I will give CS2 a shot, but not yet

Really? I'm starting to get lag at about 500K with a 6 year old computer. (i9-9900, 64gb ddr 4 3200mhz) and a somewhat newer graphics card a rtx 3070. You got something in your settings really wrong if you are getting lag at 150K

I bought the game and I can say after learning the tutorials, it's really fun now especially since I got the game after the Economy 2.0 patch which everyone said was a game-changer, I held off buying the game till' there was SOMEWHAT an improvement. I can see why people complain about the performance.. My city is still small and I'm a little nervous to reach those big numbers. Plus, the regions packs.. They look really cool, I want my U.K assets already 😭-but yeah, they should fix performance as people say

You're not telling us anything. What i9? What kind of RAM? Is it DDR5? What clockspeed? And you're playing on a laptop. Your hardware is worse and you're probably getting thermal throttling. Gaming laptops have never been good for demanding games.
