Ron jarzombek actually built that guitar he is playing. he was my guitar teacher for 3 years. I didn't know his notoriety until years later. I thought he was just some dude that taught guitar lessons to kids.
Same I just found out he was in Watchtower today while I was at my lesson with him, he and I were talking about Don Dokken, so when I got home I looked him up and I was like “God damn, my guitar teacher is more badass than I thought”
I'm from San Antonio, I've seen Ron a couple shows, one time at a Sonata Arctica show in 2006 at 'The Sanctuary', that small venue behind (or used to be?) Hogwild Records. Anyway, where does Ron give lessons, and how do you go about starting them?
I had the great honor of being Rons vocalist for a brief time and I must say, he is BEYOND talented. His creative skills are FAR above most other guitarists. Singing into the mic while he played guitar in the same project was always a dream of mine. It was worth it, even for a short time. He rules as a musician and especially as a human. Great guy.
They both play completely different music and aimed for different audiences. Marty is a melodic-rock/metal type-of player who's more focused on vibratos, dynamics, exotic phrasing and such. Jarzombek is a prog-metal type of player and more focused on free tonality, odd time signatures, 12-tone stuff. They're all great, all in their own incomparable ways.
No, you're doing it all wrong. You're not supposed to go about this logically, but rather favor one guitarist over the other and obstinately repeat that he's "better."
Especially because he is known to do Atonal metal. This jam was one of the most hilarious jams I have seen because both Marty and Ron play some insane guitar licks that don't fit over what the bassist is doing.
Met Ron at BJs Southside Music back 1986. He gave lessons for $20 bucks an hr then. I was in 11th grade and thought I knew something. Boy did he prove me wrong. Great guy!! I use to go see him when he was in Watchtower too back then...I stopped playing when I joined the military and low and behold 28 yrs later I ran into him on base giving lessons. Still a down to earth dude, a guitar master!!!
jegham aymen Who could possibly nag about that performance. Ron was ripping it up. His stuff was just more harmonically complex than marries. He still stayed
ron also rarely ever plays live, mowt of his work is on studio records, so clearly hes out of his comfort zone here so its understandable that it would be a bit sloppy
It's a real travesty that Ron isn't more well known. He's not just the typical wanking shredder, he has a very unique approach and technique to the guitar. And his body of work from Watchtower to Spastic Ink, Blotted Science, Extraterrestrial Exiled, and his solo stuff is pretty impressive. Ron Jarzombek is in my top five favorite guitarists next to Randy Rhoads, Andy Larocque, Akira Takasaki, and Michael Romeo. Best Regards
I'd argue he has the most unique shred style around. And everything is 100% theory so it may sound weird but there's always method to the madness. Kind of post modern shred
Here is a "I don't care" moment for y'all. One of my best friends played guitar with Marty during some of his solo touring. He knows I have always been a huge Megadeth fan so it was kinda funny when he sent me the link to the article saying that he was going to be Marty's guitarist. He was on stage with Marty trading off solos and obviously backing him up. His name is Ron Jarzombek..(you should look him up) that is my claim to fame :-) Great thing is he is just as nice as Marty. Very humble
RJ is so fkn good, and Marty knows it. I am a huge, HUGE Marty Friedman fan, but i'm starting to realize that Ron Jarzombek is actually a much more fluid and accurate player. He is up there with the guys that are BETTER than the guitar gods that we know of. Guys like Bumblefoot, Ron Thal....It's like they have mastered the guitar and cant do it ANY better...and Marty knows it! lol
Eventho I agree with you, I don't think it's about taste, I don't believe in musical taste. I think everyone in the world can enjoy any music as long as they can respect the artists they're listening to, some need a little more time, depending on what you're used to. I listen to anything from hip-hop to technical death metal and even jazz. I have my fav bands, of course (Pantera!), but I just learned that I can enjoy all music, and I love it!
Both are great at their own game. Do you prefer melodic rock or experimental adventure? All the listeners are winners. I like both guitarists even if one of them is "better" at finger athletics.
Yea, I'd have to agree. It's almost impossible to find someone who can master multiple styles enough to pull off killer improv especially when you go from what Ron does (Technical Metal not Jazz) to Blues. Blues is difficult because it gets its feeling from being "sloppy" (lack of a better word - no offense). I'd like to hear some play Jarzombek's material without ever practicing it...LMAO!
First time hearing Jarzombek, but he definitely seems interesting, gotta give him a listen! About the sloppy playing of his, yeah, he made a few mistakes, but they weren't so bad. For me it's always Marty al the way, but they both seem to be awesome guitaists.
Ok, I listened to the Jarzombek solo album, and it totally changed my mind. The album is TERRIBLE. Not a single memorable or reasonable song, just random noises and cacaphony.
+serser1996529 You mean The Animation Of Entomology? Because that album is brilliant. There is a very complex 12-tone system behind it, and the time signatures are very odd and versatile because all of the songs are actually made as sync-ups to scenes in horror movies featuring bugs etc. Of course it's gonna sound chaotic and all over the place, but a lot of effort went into that music. This is all but random, I have never experienced music that had more work behind it.
+Dr. Florence Also, listen to his video "In the name of Ron", and then come back and talk about how he is not able to write a melody or something that doesn't sound random. This guy is a genius.
@@serser1996529 What are you? A six year old? You don't have any idea of what the meaning behind Ron's music is. If you don't enjoy it, fine, but it's anything but random noises...
True. I think Marty being a more seasoned 'live' guitar player than Ron could be a factor. Ron did this small one-off tour with Marty after a huge break to be fair... I don't know. But Ron is still incredible in his compositions IMO :D.
Ron is definitely out of his depth, he is consumed by his shredder techniques and when he saw himself playing a blues improvisation, he obviously couldn't play as well as when he played at Spastic ink/Watchtower, however, both are good guitar players, only that they're not 'singin' the same tune'.
Agreed, Ron is one of my favorite guitarists, but i found his "improvisation" in this video is disappointing to be honest :( i thought he will unleash some of his holdsworth-esque licks but wtf? even at 2:26 and 2:50 - 3:01 his sweep and legatos sounds sloppy. Well maybe that was just his style but still..
Vs Marty" video if you're already biased to begin with. Why not Ron and Marty jamming? Guitar playing isn't a competition and you don't need to instigate the feeble minded arguments of "guitar player A is better then B" by posting a vs video. Everyone has their own opinions because music is subjective I'm sure somewhere in the world someone would say Eric Clapton rapes them both and then would come up with an intelligent argument as to why that's true but it's not because it's about taste.
I really like RJ solos and albums, very very original harmonically speaking, but in this improvisation (talking about rythmic) what he's playing make no sense.
don't get me wrong i love Ron stuff from Blotted Science and PHHHP!, but his improvisation in this video is... meh, and bland compared to people like Guthrie Govan, Greg Howe, Allan Holdsworth, Brett Garsed, etc. and i yes I find Marty's improvisation is much more fun to listen.
Marty is brilliant, but getting older, he is playing less and less fast and "shreddy" (i saw him live decembre 2012). I'm a big fan of Ron Jarzombek, and he is playing incredibly technical licks, very fast and his songs are very originally written. But on this track, i prefer Marty's melodies, Ron's parts are heartless and contain mistakes (i'm sorry to say that beacause he's a god to me).
Haha far from owned. But Ron is a beast. The first sizable riff he played was truly him (and imo, was the best part of the whole clip). The rest was bland at best. But I've seen the remaining part of the set. They both were insane.
Marty Friedman is just a wee tad better at playing simpler guitar solos than Ron Jarzombek is at playing monstrously, otherworldly, and next to nearly impossible guitar solos, and that is all. Marty Friedman, in no way, shape, or form, came anywhere near to out-playing him. Not even close.
Not that Ron is bad but it's a bit too widdily and wanky for me, I find Marty's playing much more unique and just overall more pleasurable to listen too and more complex to reproduce, I mean you can learn all the arpeggios you want you'll never have the same vibrato or attack that Marty get's where as Ron it's kind of like yeah I'm pretty sure I could play better then that (as far as playing goes not creativity) if I practice solidly for about 5 years tops. Plus what's the point of making "Ron
ron seems to be awesome at composing scales and composing ridiculous songs with his brother in spastic ink. but when it comes to playing live, his style just doesnt sound that great and yea marty is better. marty played with jason becker for gods sake
maybe. but there are different aspect of performing guitar. Like i said, ron is more cerebral and is probably better at dissecting and creating scales while marty plays more typical scales/patterns but also has a pretty unique style and sound to his solos. both great guitarists. not sure who i would say is better.
You are an idiot, Ron has played with Becker many times, is a really good friend of becker's and does guitar tutorials on Becker's behalf. Friedman left Becker a while back but when Jason Becker got ALS, Ron stayed by his side.
man this is really poor playing for Ron.. seriosuely wtf... totally bieng outclassed by marty.. hes not even playing clean, his phrasing is god damn awful too.. ouch..
+Whaleform It is a little disappointing, and I love Ron, but it should probably be put into perspective. Improv, especially bluesy improv, is not what Ron Jarzombek does. Jamming blues is a skill in and of itself, and Ron Jarzombek put his time and energy into other guitar pursuits. I appreciate that, because I believe the market is saturated by blues jammers. To put Ron in this scenario, would be like putting Michael Jordan on the White Sox (hehe). He's still a gifted and talented athlete, but he never could've shined in baseball like he did in basketball.
Seriously People I understand where you are coming from, and would have agreed once upon a time. But honestly we arent talking about a jazz standard here, its a simple jam in 1 key.. regardless of what you do in music, everyone should be able to express themselves comfortably (pros specifically) with such an easy base to work from.. He was just playing licks (not very clean either) and looked like he didnt belong.. Ron is ofcourse a force to be reckoned with, im just surprised but this display quite frankly..
It is a little surprising, yes. Make no mistake, though, the guy can get it done live. I've been privileged to be able to see his Rush tribute band (Exit Stage Left, San Antonio) many times. Now that is a hell of a band. Best guitar player, bass player, and drummer in town, hands down. The singer is quite good herself, but I'm sure she greatly appreciates having so much talent behind her. Not pushing my earlier point, but for those fans of Ron's playing who haven't had the chance to see him live, I can assure you that he absolutely NAILS rehearsed material on stage.
right on man im glad you enjoyed that show. I respect what you say for sure, im just coming at this from a different perspective i suppose. i just saw marty live on his recent completed tour and he did that same progression to call up a random fan from the audience to jam with him in each show. some of the shows the guys picked did incredibly well, much better than ron.. just to add to the fact that it was a very basic plat form for him to express himself in terms of chord changes. none the less RON rocks.. we all have bad days Peace

Because popularity always determines skill right? So some lists that name Kirt Hammet as one of the greatest guitarists is objectively accurate? Are Justin Bieber and Kanye West some of the greatest musical minds in human's existence? After all, everyone knows about them and they have huge followings. What Ron's written that's memorable? Hm, I don't know, what about the Animation of Entomology? Very progressive and complex music merged with horror film music, is that not impressive at all? What about his solo albums? I'm sorry that your musical understanding is so limited that when talking about Friedman, you list songs like Rust in Peace even though the solo is nothing immensely outstanding. Sure, it's better than any solo Mustaine has written in the band, but speaking about Friedman, even in Megadeth he had better pieces, let alone what he did outside of Megadeth. No wonder you can't appreciate the effort Ron is puting in his music, but you probably haven't given it a chance anyway.

Marty is more human while Ron is more inhuman. For better or worse.
