She was the sales pitch lady for the pancake mix at the Worlds Fair. She told stories and made the pancakes for people to sample and the sales of the mix exploded .
America's first sales icon
I remember those days
When I was a kid her brand was the only brand my Mom would buy. As a kid I thought the lady on the bottle and box actually made the stuff. It was quite a treat for Sunday breakfast for an Army family.

Aunt jemima definitely deserves to be in the black history she was an icon for all the African American food faces such as the man on the zilarans rice box the man on the cream of wheat box & aunt Silvias bbq sauce etc...
White people always want to tell us how we should be ,
It’s food. I don’t care who the hells face is on it.
Commander Doom then stop your backhanded complaining that you don’t like the change, your selfish insensitivity, ‘fess up, you don’t like the change show some integrity
Why? Why should a ex-slave black woman who did nothing but line the pockets for racist white men be in the history books. By your statements Every black person no matter who they are should be in a hall of fame
Sonny Lopez Amen !
So sad that her image is being erased. What an amazing story.
Sadly, your mammy character is being taken away from you
That ain’t her image on that bottle. That’s a white woman they painted black
@@biracialangel8040 Aunt Jemima isn’t a mammy character since at least the 80s. Yep, that character was erased almost 40 years ago.
Couldn’t agree more. Taking down a character that celebrated and homaged Aunt Jemima’s life will never make sense.

@psycold YT algorithm knows Aunt Jemima pancakes are good anytime, even during insurrections.
I loved the syrup growing up as a kid and still do it's a crying shame they're doing away with aunt Jeremiah she will always be a icon in this crazy messed up world
There still going to have the waffles and pancakes but not with her face on it sad 😞

Todd Tepper She would say " racism is alive and well".
"You are discarding the accomplishments of the black people in our country, in a time when we needed to make steps forward".
She'd say where's my damn money for using my likeness?

I bought Aunt Jemima today. Good bye Americana.
Good bye white nationalism!
I bought as well, and I smiled because she was still on the box. Ill probably cut her image out and save her...
BLACK LIVES MATTER AND SO DO EVERY RACE ON EARTH GET OVER YOURSELVES!

Glen Christenson All Lives Matter
So basically, the Aunt Jemima character initially started as a racist stereotype, but after the brand got bought out it gave several black women enough fame that even one of their graves is a historical landmark. And now people want to take that history away by getting rid of the character on the packaging. So dumb.
Scotty Do only liberal Democrats want to do that.
Who cares if there is a picture on the box or the name of the product. Grow up people.
Hitler started out an a anti Semitic leader of a genocide but after the neonazis took over it gave several impressionists a very good income, one of which went on to be a celebrated vocalist. Now people want to take away all that history by taking down all the nazi symbolism and get rid of hitlers image on the two dollar bill. Just because something is deplorable in its inception and continues to represent that deplorable thing to current day, doesn’t mean some people won’t get upset that it’s being removed. Usually it’s people who don’t understand why it’s still deplorable... so like deplorable people.
@@dontbetonit813 It's more racist to remove the picture than to keep it though...
PrintProfessor - what I don’t understand is a persons point when they use triple negatives in the same sentence. Looks like you obtained your degree from a liberal college, professor.
A wound, wether physical or emotional can heal, it is the desired outcome unless the person enjoys their wound or gives it some value or reaps some reward from it. It is necessary to healing to not disturb the wound, some favor and attention may be given to it, keeping it clean for example, but to continually press, poke and squeeze it, will prolong the process or make it worse. As my simple Grandmother often said when I had a skinned knee as a child or problems with my girlfriend as a young man, “if you don’t quit picking at it, it won’t never heal up”
Interesting, I thought she was fictional character. Thanks for the education.
She was a fictional character.
@@helenholt1161 But she was based on Nancy Green, who was the original model, as well as the first black millionaire.
@@MrRAGE-md5rj No she wasn't. The character first appeared on a flour product. Years later a pancake mix was developed for the brand and she was the first model hired to portray the character at in person appearances. Then her image was used on the packaging replacing a drawing that was the first representation of Aunt Jemima. Also, she was not a millionaire. She was so poorly paid for her work that she continued to do domestic work until just a few years before she died. The story of Nancy Green is one of exploiting a powerless woman of color.
@@helenholt1161 100% incorrect. The Nancy Green decedents and family confirms everything your stating is bullshit
She IS a fictional character. Nancy Green "played" the part. She was replaced once she died with a different woman so the character could continue. Aunt Jemima was based on a minstrel (racist) show and song. Aunt Jemima is a "Mammy" type created from American slavery. There's nothing "homey" about her except to white people who like to see big, black women as "mammy" types. Someone to mother them in place of their own mothers. It's rich that they actually hired an ex-slave, Ms. Green, to play the part. What do you want to bet she was paid far less than the other white Disney characters?
She was an American icon! A part of this nation's honored history! Her symbol should be preserved forever!
I dressed as Aunt Jemima in 8th grade. That wouldn't fly today
Oh nah lmao
If you wore blackface it shouldn't of been appropriate then
@@BlackGirlLovesAnime6 different times homie, most people didn't know about Black face and the history of it, it wasn't until I was 25 that I first learned about Black face within cinema and TV shows. I had friends who dressed in black face while hanging around with black friends, and it was never discussed nor was it an issue, Now im not saying it shouldn't have been an issue. But like most things pre internet we were just unaware. Dressing up as Michael Jackson was just something fun to do and in no way shape or form was meant to be racist or rude. You have to remember back then peoples understanding of the world from a social perspective was formed from our experiences within the years of 8 - 18 anything prior to this or after hadn't much of an impact on who we were and or who we would ever be. I personally am having difficulty now at the age of 41 in understanding this hyper political SJW era, I know without a doubt I am a good person and have never done anything out of malice to offend or hurt someone, But now I am being told that who I was and am is wrong somehow. I think the younger generation is overly sensitive, and I think a tipping point is being reached. It's unfortunate because I feel great strides were being made by my generation Gen X BTW Equality, womens rights , LGBTQ rights and so much more... But rather then a positive movement with todays generation, it feels unhinged, disconnected and loud. Nothing of any value or consiquence, just buzz words hash tags and cancel culture. Todays youth seem driven by their inability to accept reality, therefor they push and push till all you have left is removing Aunt Jemima off the bottles of maple syrup, and Avocado's on Toast.
No more Al Jolson.
All ingredients for making pancakes included in a single package. *Do add fresh eggs and milk*
There have been pancake mixes that included powdered eggs and milk (add water only) but these have never been a huge success because everyone wants fresh eggs and milk in their morning pancake.
Who gives a dam about taking her off the box of pancakes they didn't pay her relatives any money so they can keep that mess mix u can taste the artificial ingredients in the mixture pancakes came from slavery the slaves would make them and the syrup the kids like the pancakes some people called them hot cakes with syrup and the hoe cake was cook on the tool that they worked in the field with.
Just bought 3 boxes of Aunt Jemima pancake mix and I’m keeping the boxes when they’re empty. Aunt Jemima Forever!!!!
Yes. Keep those boxes and fill 'em with New Aunt Jemima pancake mix. She would approve, I'm sure.
Watch them lose massive money, and then quickly bring her back!

Uhhh
They say she actually named herself. When the children would squak for more pancakes she would respond... " git em yo self,.. I ain't cho mama". . . ' Ain't cho Mama '. There you have it !!
Nancy Green... Wow.... Who knew... Now we know her name...
I dig your channel man. Keep it coming. I love the random stuff. It always comes in handy around a dinner table. And focusing on the eye witness accounts is a great idea. Please, don't be shy with the American Revolution stuff. I love it. I could even get down with some French & Indian War stuff. Did anybody happen to witness Washington getting two horses shot out from underneath him during that particular conflict? Honestly, as far as I'm concerned any Washington story is fit for print. I got a bottle of Aunt Jemima syrup when I was shopping this week. 🥞
It wasn't on my list. I have a full bottle of Log Cabin syrup in the pantry.
But I knew that once the current store shelves and warehouses are depleted, that's it. 😕
I watched this because I was interested in the history of the product. Discontinuing Aunt Jemima is like saying good-bye to an old friend.
I had to leave because of all the negative comments. It's a fictional character fashioned after a real person. The whole world's gone crazy.
Coming to a store near you: Karl Marx Syrup, Uncle Lenin’s Rice, Joseph Stalin’s Krispies (not sold in Ukraine), Mao’s little red hot sauce, Fidel’s black beans, and many more.
But they’ll never be in stock....
I hate political correctness brainwashing that these liberals fall all over, no backbone scared of anybody that is a different color then them.
If only people had watched this vid before they deemed the aunt jemima brand racist and of only they'd talked to her relatives as well....
I lived in Rhinelander, Wisconsin during the early 60's. There were no blacks in our town. Once, a black family from Milwaukee had a hard time getting accommodations at the local "motor lodge." It was such an unusual occurrence that it made the local newspaper! I think I was in 1st grade when Aunt Jemima came to our school to do a lyceum. She was delightful. She told stories and sang songs and, I suppose, talked about pancakes although I don't remember that part. What I do remember is developing a theory that she wasn't a "real black person" because during her performance she opened her hands and her palms weren't black at all. As a matter of fact, they were pretty much just like mine - or mine were pretty much like hers. She did more to promote racial understanding in 20 minutes before an auditorium of white elementary school kids than the entire BLM campaign will ever accomplish - if there's any ambition to promote any kind of harmony and understanding. Sad to see uninformed whiners trying to erase her memory.
Alas a victim of the Stalinist purge.
R.I.P Aunt Jemima!

unreal how some southern accents are so similar so far away. i’m fascinated by the huge differences in southern accents. only southerners can understand it. even neighboring counties in a state can have unique sounds. pronunciations different from each other. some so subtle only neighboring counties can detect the difference. i am saddened by the fact our accents are vanishing. even in my kids. i still have that old fashion accent of my daddy but my grandparents were very different. most from the depression era expressions and old sayings. thanks for the response. and good luck with your education and look forward to more from you. it’s greatly appreciated. i try to spread the word about ya.
@@tnt-hv6qw I completely agree. I live where Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee meet and the accents are different from each of the states in our area within 4 miles of each other.
Aunt Jemima came to my area around 1960. The local National Association for the Advancement of Colored People objected.
She was interviewed in our local newspaper to answer those objections.
Aunt Jemima was an angel that had a awesome recipe for the tastiest pancakes 🥞
Someone mention Aunt Jemima pancakes and your mouth waters knowing what is coming. We grew up with her image and products. Look up Aunt Jemima memorabilia. She was much loved.
Aunt Jamima gets my vote. Give her credit where credit is due.
Should have left her image on the bottle and told her story on the back. That is respecting black history plus educating millions. Until this became an issue I didn't know about Nancy Green. Interesting and uplifting story

I bet she would have been a great person to meet and talk to over a glass of ice tea. I cannot imagine a woman just making a pancake could cause such a crowd of interested onlookers that the police had to come break it up! I hope she enjoyed the day!
I love this beautiful. Old lady , still love her today
She was the lady on the bottle of syrup on America’s breakfast table and the only thought about her was how delicious her syrup was on hotcakes. But now the PC police has made her a guilty pleasure. Lets put a stuffed teddy bear on the bottle for the fragile people fostering racism. What next banning white rice?

Thank you ! Why does EVERYTHING have to be racist ? It's getting to be that even if you say hello, it offends somebody. Life's too short, I got better things to do than worry about that kind of stuff.
The only thing I thought about when it came to Aunt Jemima was "Mmm! This is going to be good!"😋🥞
If they change the name I will change brands. I grew up with this brand and never thought about her being black.
No Aunt Jamima no pancakes! Going to buy Hungry Jack!
You left out the most important part. Aunt Jemima pancake mix was Nancy Greenwoods original recipe that she was created herself.
They should used the original face of that lady its about her heart and personality instead of finding someone with a better appearance, was that her pancake recipe?like in the1st movie imitation of life.
She's the woman who makes great syrup on my pancakes in the morning
And here we let people get rid of history because they are offended and they don't do their history. That's the problem, people don't see the lesson that history gives to us.
I will buy no more Quaker products. For heavens sakes let the woman remain on the label!
What makes having a black woman’s face on a box of pancake mix racist? And what makes it so racist that the company feels the need to change their packaging? Has there ever been anything derogatory associated with it?
I'm going to listen to the Frank Zappa classic "Electric Aunt Jemima" song (1968) more than ever and also the tune "Jemima Surrender" by The Band. (1970) Now I've heard a rumor that the descendants of the original Aunt Jemima are suing Quacker Oats for removing the name from the products (without consent) since they were receiving royalties/residuals from it. Good for them.

Ester Mays I agree with you. I was being a little sarcastic saying that Mrs. Butterworth May be next.

I don't agree with the changes , when I see Aunt Jemima, mrs. Butterworth ,or Uncle Bens, the only thing I think of is some people who really know how to cook good food. I'm guessing nobody will use Black people in any ads because no matter how you look at it they will be deemed to be racist. Good luck finding jobs in marketing.

Wow one year later it changed
I will not be buying the replacement named product. I am offended by Quaker deciding on the erasure of an iconic part of history.
