    Wow, that's a blast from the past. Had this exact same issue on our 1086 back in the '80s. I didn't know any better as a pre-teen and thought I'd ruined the entire transmission. If I recall the tractor was at the shop for several weeks.

      The quick fix is only a few minutes, the proper repair might take a few hours.

    LOL we had to do that for a few years when had a clutch put in fixed that shift linkage I feel your pain! It's a standard feature of the xx86 series lol

    Have international 485 similar probs,where slipping from low to high gear the lever sometimes jams...gentle with it and loads of lubricant oil around gear levers keeps it happy.

    very good vid. my dad always crawled around under the hot tractor cab with prybars

    Had a lot of trouble with it on the 786. Trouble was the snap ring on the end of the shaft, the groove eventually wouldn't hold the snap ring.
    We cut a hatch in the side of the cab behind the wheel for access, put a stack of washers on the shaft to hold the lever tight, and tack welded a smaller washer to the end of the shaft. End of troubles.

    We have the same problem with our 986. There is a triangle piece and rod under the seat floor. If the shifter gets stuck i can just pry that peice backwards and it fixes it. You have to gonin from the left side by the rear tire. Takes me about 30sec.

    Thank you this was extremely helpful I found it to be applicable for 1586 also!!

    Just an idea. On our 1486 with 9,000+ hours what helped it not do that was making sure we clutched it when we went to neutral from hi rather than a pull. Not sayin y'all don't its just what worked for us

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  7 років тому +1

      My left foot is well worked out. The issue is going from high to park, which we would be stopped, clutch in.

  • @mlotus95

    Literally you just go under the tractor and use a pry bar and just pry gently on the linkage. Takes 2 minutes. You did it the extremely hard way

  • @DennysCountryLife

  • @mikeness5074
    @mikeness5074 4 роки тому

    That's the linkage bolt that loosens up take the seat off and stand on your head and tighten it up also a key in it should fix the problem.

    Happens to my 1086 too, around once a year. We have learned to put the clutch in carefully, come to a complete stop, shift slowly into the next gear (. High low or neutral). It doesn't happen as often. Pretty frustrating. Thanks.

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  6 років тому

      Most of the time it doesn't happen when I'm driving. I don't think I have special procedure to avoid getting stuck.

  • @KyleAckley
    @KyleAckley 6 років тому

    That's why we keep a handy crowbar in all of our internationals and we keep the shifting cover off

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  6 років тому

      It'll get us once or twice a year. Usually when someone goes for park too quickly from high.

    • @KyleAckley
      @KyleAckley 6 років тому

      Boehm Farm yeah we'll have that. Then it'll freewheel when you have a load going up a hill and you drop the ta.

  • @cjfarms2239
    @cjfarms2239 7 років тому

    on our 986, with, 10,000 hours, and it was a loader tractor so it shifts hard. if we get the rear end up higher than the front, in reverse, the park,/ reverse plate will get stuck, and if you get the lever weaseled out if the reverse slot, into a another rang, it will get stuck between gears, it will happen anytime, when the rear end gets up higher than front, so that might cause something like what happened to your 1086, but that my opinion and expirences

    • @boehmfarm4276

    My 1086 is doing this. I believe it is play in the linkage where it goes into the transmission(small bolt worn). Have not taken the seat out yet to know for sure. Hard to see up under there but feels loose and sloppy there.

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  7 років тому

      We'll probably pull the seat on ours to make adjustments. I'm sure the connectors are loose.

    Got an old ford 535 tractor I think this is the issue, gonna pull the cover off and see why my tractor is such a pain in the ass to switch the gears around. Seems like I’m trying to shift through a brick full of bolts.

  • @jasonmushersee
    @jasonmushersee 7 років тому

    got to push that clutch in before shifting not during and the 10&1586 were hard to find gears. ih656 is like this and jd3010 and all older case with power shift. growing up i can't remember the thousands of times my dad almost killed me always leaving tractors in gear when he shut them off. you ever bale hay small squares with a case power shift? downshifting is very jerky & dangerous on the hay wagons.

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  7 років тому

      I used the TA when we baled a little bit with the 1086, but I watched to pull it down so I wouldn't throw Brad off the wagon.

    • @boehmfarm4276

      It works now when the wind blows.
      We took the doors off before I ever drove it, so fifteen years plus. It all worked when dad bought it. Mom made him get a cab tractor when I was born.

      I've already fixed it twice this season and I use that word loosely. "Fixed" is not the right word. I would greatly enjoy updating the shift linkage if someone could point me in the right direction for an updated kit for this tractor. - Brad

      Boehm Farm shut it off in gear if you're not trying to use the PTO while stationary you can cut you a board to put between the brake pedals and the steering wheel while it's running LOL don't get me going I'm good at rigging something even if it's wrong

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  7 років тому +1

      Park is not the issue. I just need to use the park position for the lever to help extract the linkage from high range.
