The cool part about the dinner is that it feels like a contest to see who 'lived better' by how they died.
They're basically discussing who "won death": Sarah Lynn says it about cultural trascendence, Crackerjack about serving a bigger cause, Herb about inner peace, and so on.
Then Secretariat says its all bullshit, that they didn't "won death" because they didn't go by their own accord. So he says he's trully the one who did it right, because he got to decide when he died. But then he reads the poem and we see that even if he jump confidently out of the bridge, he was regretting his decision halfway down.
The final moral is that none "won death". Everybody went scared, confused, and wanting to keep living more. Life isn't a checklist to do it right and death isn't something one can conquer.

You’re about half right, they’re all just representations of Bojacks own thoughts about death & life & he uses people in his past to characterise those thoughts. It’s a battle between all those thoughts for Bojack & when you look back on his life & choices it’s very clear. Sarah Lynns argument mirrors his own about giving up his life for fame, Secreteriat (Bojack attempts suicide numerous times but never goes all the way through with it VFHD) Herb with peace is a what if for Bojack with Charlotte & so on.

Legend says show creator Raphael Bob Waksburg was playing a little game with himself where he wanted to, by the end of the show, start at least one episode with each letter of the alphabet, and this episode's idea came to him because he was getting to the end and he needed a "V".

I don’t usually comment but now that we’re here I really want to make a point to show how amazing this show’s writing is:
The poem that gives the episode its name, “The view from Halfway down”, consists of 3 parts, written all in a different grammatical person:
3rd “His eyes locked shut but peak to see/The view form halfway down”
2nd “It’s all okay, it would be/Were you not now halfway down”
1st “I really should’ve thought about the view from halfway d-”
    3. 2. 1.
Butterscotch horseman was not a good writer, so in his mind, Bojack made him one.

I remember being shocked when I heard Herb's story about how he decided not to kill himself because "the nicks were having a good season, and I wanted to see what happened." because I experienced the exact same thing with *this* show. I'd been suicidal for a while before the final season of Bojack Horseman and I remember seeing that the new season was coming out and I really wanted to know how it ended, so I waited. By the time I watched the final episode my life was back on track (I was literally living in a homeless shelter during the final season and had gotten the call about getting my first house during it). Funny how things come full circle sometimes!

Amazing reaction. Best I've seen to this episode, and really mirrored my own. I have a Facebook memory that pops up in early February every year. It says something like "Well, about to embark on the final penultimate episode of BoJack. I'm not prepared!" and the comment I added after watching was just "Jesus." I was absolutely stunned. I've seen it probably 20 times now and it still not only makes me tear up but gives me existential angst every single time.
There are a lot of fun things to point out about this episode, but I'm sure a plethora of others (Jefe, do you know what a plethora is?!) will be chiming in and I don't wanna steal them all. (Someone will also post Alison Tafel's incredible poem in its entirety and get a few hundred likes, too!) So I'll just note that Raphael Bob-Waksberg originally planned to bring John Krasinski back and have him alternate lines with Will Arnett for Secretariat/Butterscotch. But after he heard Arnett's delivery of the poem, he decided to keep it all Arnett. Great decision. I'm still in shock that he wasn't even nominated for best voiceover actor at the Emmys that year (or for Free Churro the year before... I mean, what?!?!).

Anybody else notice how Sarah Lynn was the first party to “be done”? I say that, cuz if we recall one of her quotes from S1E3, she said, “I'm at a place right now where I never need to grow as a person or rise to an occasion because I can constantly just surround myself with sycophants and enablers until I die tragically young.” And while that quote is foreshadowing on its own to how Bojack treated her in S3E11, I’d like to highlight her very next quote that followed,
There was the second part too, “Yeah…it’s pretty much too late for me…” as if to say she was *done*, even back then. Resigned to it as well 🥺

One of the greatest episodes of televisions I've ever witnesses. My husband and I had to pause this episode THREE TIMES on our first watch to calm down/get ourselves "stable" before continuing. It hurt. But we had to watch it. We had to finish it. We knew we were witnessing animation history.
I have been waiting for this reaction ever since you both reacted to the first episode and this reaction did not disappoint.
And as someone who was the edge, was so close to truly seeing "The View From Halfway Down" for myself - that poem, which was written by Alison Tafel (who also wrote this episode!) captured the feeling so perfectly that I audibly started sobbing the first time I heard it.

I think the most gut-wrenching part for me was Herb announcing Bojack to the stage. I find it incredibly humbling, to hear a summation of your entire existence used as an intro for some kind of theatrical act. All of your life, dreams, accomplishments, and most of all failures- all leading to the realization that the part of your brain (the part that "thinks that everyone hates you, and they're NOT wrong to feel that way") that hyperfocuses on your mistakes was the truest part of you. To live a life that has almost nothing to show for it other than being simply... a STUPID piece of SHIT. How dark and pathetic, and an absolutely "normal" conclusion that people with suicidal ideation lead to. To everyone reading this, the view from halfway down is not something you deserve to see. And our hearts must beat for those that made it all the way down.

This episode hurt my fee-fees, my ling-lings 😢.
Jokes and obscure references aside, this is definitely among the greatest episodes of the show along with Time's Arrow, Free Churro, and personally with the last episode as well.

To be honest, I think this is the first show that had me crying like that at the end. Except for maybe House. Then again, I haven’t watched very many shows from beginning to end.

I don't think I'm smart enough to meaningfully add anything to the conversation about this episode that hasn't already been said.
Simply one of the single greatest episodes of television ever made.

Don’t get me wrong I cried a dozen times during this episode but none as hard as Beatrice.
The song, her brother dying first dragged her down.
