I actually disagree about this not being a good show for depressed people. The poem in this episode is REALLY good suicide prevention, and the build up this episode makes it so much more powerful.

The idea of thinking of life only halfway into the decision you made of ending your own is so damn powerful. That poem is such a good piece for anyone going through something rough that has them considering suicide. I’m happy I watched this show after my darkest time, and I’m happy the lessons I learned after so were the same ones taught in this show. Life’s a bitch, but it keeps going. Time stops for no one. And while you’re still living, you can always make up for the mistakes you’ve made. Once you’re gone, there’s nothing left to save you or any way for you to fix the messes you’ve made. Such a damn good message and show.

Also a theory is that the last episode is Bojacks veiw from halfway down, that the flatline in this episode was when he was dying, and the heartbeat was his in between, the last episode is a reflection on how he might've wrapped up his life if he were to not drown- his veiw from halfway down. And at the last episode, you can see a heartbeat monitor again, during Mr. Blue. And at the end... the flatline comes back. So from the Veiw from halfway down to the end of the last episode, it was still in his head. And I think that is something to really reflect on. What will be our veiw from halfway down?

That I can stop to think about myself, my life, my relationships, my flaws and all the Problems i had. Existing is wunderful, but it is also Pain. No potential to do anything. And that does legitimately still terrify me. I like to experience the world. I care about other people, I want to spend time with them and help people and experience things. Even the moments of displeasure and suffering, I’ve been fortunate not to suffer any real trauma, and so I still want the potential to do things, to experience more. The poem that Butterscotch reads is actually very convincing in the message to not kill yourself. That poem is terrifying and makes you feel the fear of someone who isn’t dead yet, but has already gone through with killing themselves. In their last moments they wish they never jumped and they could be safe again, but now it was too late and their choice to jump took the choice of living away from them. They have no choice now. They’re about to die. And it’s their fault. There have been people who went along with suicide, but ended up living, and in their final moments they all regretted making the choice to go ahead with it.

I remember when I watched this episode. I had just found out I'd have to redo my whole thesis that I was about to submit because of an oversight from my supervisor. It was a lot considering I was (still am) struggling with debilitating depression that made getting out of bed very challenging. I had no friends, no loved ones. Nothing but my studies. I was so proud of that thesis, I never thought I could finish it and the couple of weeks I thought I did it and could graduate gave me a high unlike I'd felt in years. Knowing all that work went down the drain just broke me. I stayed up almost three days in a row doing nothing but drinking wine and sitting on the balcony smoking cigarettes (ironically, I had quit both a year prior) in between watching the final season of this show. I was seriously contemplating suicide because I was just so tired and all my work amounted to nothing. It was the breaking point. I know it sounds dramatic now but I felt so cornered, there was no way out. And this episode just made me have a full-on meltdown because as much as I felt cornered, the existential dread and fear I got from this made me too scared to do the deed. I didn't know what to do, so I called my mom for the first time in two years. She and dad drove five hours that night to come and get me back home, it was the first time in years I felt like someone cared.
Eventually, I got over it. I'm still not okay, but I'm getting better. I'm taking baby steps with re-doing my thesis. I stopped smoking and drinking again after those three days. I went to therapy. It's getting better but I went to a dark place and who knows what could have happened if I hadn't gotten the reality check from this episode.
Sorry for the long story, I just felt like I wanted to share it since I mostly just get weird looks when I mention a TV show saved my life lol

I legit had an emotional breakdown at Ivy Tran: Food Court Detective because my dog ripped my face off, so believe me when I say I get it. This show just has that ability to really make you look at your life in ways no other show has done for me. When I try to explain the last five seasons to people I get the same looks, I can't imagine trying to explain to anyone right now about that breakdown I had because of Ivy lol.
Either way, I'm really happy the show did that for you because I'm glad you're still around. Tell your parents a complete stranger on the internet thanks them for coming to get you because I get *that* feeling, too. I fell behind on the channel because I went to stay with my little sister for a few days after I put my dog down after the surgery, and I ended up staying for weeks because it was just so nice to have that kind of warmth in my life. My dog's aggression kept me from having friends over the apartment or going on vacation, add my next-level introverted nature to the mix and being around someone who feels like they care just wasn't something I had a lot of.
I dunno, between the pandemic, my incident, and now this final season of Bojack, I just really feel like my attitude towards people has shifted for the better.
One step at a time for each of us, right? I hope this finds you doing well and I hope you have a great day and I know your thesis is gonna come out fantastic.

And I'm glad to hear you had someone you could rely on during your dark moments, too. I'm very introverted as well so I can understand how hard it is for us to reach out and sometimes going without that reminder for extended periods of time can make one forget what it feels like.

      I didn’t say “favorite”. I said “most impactful”. 😉
But I do totally get it. There’s still a ton of stuff in this episode to take apart, bit by bit. And as for the suicide comment, I will say that the poem is pretty strong in the regard. Folks who often attempt and fail at suicide (like from jumping off a bridge) never attempt a second time. But to go so far as to recommend the entirety of this show? It may be beneficial in a sort of “shocking bath of ice water” kind of treatment, I suppose. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Now that might seem strange but it is actually a blessing to know "no you're not the only one who feels like this" Bojack, and also Rick and Morty, Fleabag, all these shows have helped me realise, it isn't entirely me. Like Diane says to Bojack "Why can't be happy, am I broken?" I think that illustrates how much we drive ourselves to NEEDING happiness and anything negative is considered almost deviant. But we need to embrace the negative, collectively, that way I believe will help those struggling with feeling that their sadness makes them an outsider from everyone else having a good time. This episode is brutal. Dude, by the end I just wanted to give you a hug, it really does seem that this episode affected you. I also don't believe in an afterlife, I don't really need to feel like I've earned anything in my life, what keeps me moving is the people I've met and how my actions have affected their life and give them good times. Maybe some of them were going through a difficult time and I was with them at the moment. I believe in the power of legacy, what we leave behind and will not get to experience outselves, what we leave behind for the next generation to take, even if I don't get to form a family myself I've helped and taught people things that only I could at that point in time, and even if they don't remember me, I would've caused an impact in this world far beyond of what I could even imagine. Of course I'm afraid of death, no one wants to die, but if I have the chance to at least go peacefully I could at least try to accept that my time has come and I've done enough in life.
Hope you're doing well, and hope you enjoy the last episode. Best wishes from Argentina.

Saying “the real meaning is the friends we made along the way” sounds corny, but it’s legitimately the only thing that brings me happiness. The view from halfway down is an incredible poem for suicide prevention and hauntingly accurate in how it describes things from the first person. In my experience you start out so resolute, sure that this it, there's nothing else you can do. Then when you take action there's an awful momentary catharsis, a false sense of relief. Then in that moment you realize, you don't want death, you just wanted it to stop, you don't want to die, you'd never wanted to die. You only get to realize how happy you really are alive in that moment, how all the despair and pressure wasn't real, and then you nearly die and lose everything you realized you care about. It's the most awful thing I've experienced.

It became one of my favorites shows and this is my favorite episode ever. One interesting thing nobody seems to mention, is the phone call to Diane. It goes how she wished a phone call to Mr Peanutbutter would go, that he would just ask how her day was and she would say “good” without the need of a follow up question.

I can always quit my job and look for another one, I can always decide to save money and go back to school, I can always cut out toxic people in my life, I can always make new friends/relationships that will be supportive, I can always change myself.
I’m not stuck in my life, no single decision is so permanent that I will be completely trapped in a bad life forever. The only decision that is completely permanent is if I decide to give up on life forever. Why worry about what’s to come and just accept what is happening now… my goal in life is to be the best I can… I will be the best version of myself and once I heal from the crisis I look back and I’m glad that I went through it… cause when I process death is when I feel the most alive… I wish all of you a happy and long life… and whatever happens after.
P.S. in my belief I feel like we may live in a simulation or that there is something after cause the term “nothingness” just doesn’t make sense to me… for there to be nothing there has to be something so I feel like there has to be something…

But honestly, it's a good deterrent and maybe you will reconsider that point upon a future rewatch...
The other piece of media is suggest to someone feeling suicidal would be the documentary about people who jumped off of the Golden Gate bridge, which I wouldn't be surprised if said documentary was the inspiration for the poem "the view from halfway down" - a quote from a kid who jumped and lives to tell the tale was incredibly telling and has stayed with me, and he basically said that the moment he jumped he felt like time slowed down and he got instant clarity to realize that all of his problems were temporary and fixable aside from the fact that he had just jumped from the bridge itself.
Powerful stuff. I routinely come back to this episode when I'm feeling down, and hope that it's made a difference for people at their low points in life, as it's done for myself and countless others.

while i agree that the show as a whole can be triggering for people who struggle with depression and/or addiction, the poem does a better service to the suicide prevention movement than other shows. it shows how the character regretted the decision because he realized that his problems weren’t the end of the world and he would be happy again. most other shows (13 reasons why for example) show the aftermath and affect on their loved ones. it’s not effective and basically saying “well what about your family and friends who will miss you?” and goes along with people saying that they need to stay alive for others and not themselves.

    2. The poem Secretariat/Butterscotch reads countsdown three to one by person. The first part reads in 3rd person; the second in 2nd person; and the third, before the door is right behind him, simulating his drop to the water, is in the 1st
    3. The house goes from his childhood home, to the set of Horsin' Around, to his actual former house.
    4. All the people are in his head. Everybody's arguments are him battling within himself. This is probably why Crackerjack can't remember his backstory because Bojack never actually met him, and didn't know much about him. So, he filled in the blanks. Also, Bojack probably, in his mind, made Crackerjack less heroic because Beatrice, who he had a terrible relationship with, idolized him.
    5. Butterscotch was never open or loving to Bojack. Him telling him he wished they had a better relationship is Bojack making himself feel better.
    6. All of the pictures in the house are pictures that have appeared throughout the series. It's fitting that the one with the sad clown pony opened up to the Horsin' Around set cause that picture embodied him in many ways. One of the pictures, the one where he's looking at himself swimming in the pool, is altered in the dream to show him looking at himself drowned in the pool; a foreshadowing of what happened
    7. Charlotte alludes to L.A. being built on black tar, and it eventually consumes everything it touches.

I think it's a good thing if the black door is unsetteling to you, and that should be the goal. It means that you are aware of the time you have, and the time you know you might not get. If the door is terrorfying then watching the episode was good, becurse you know that you havent accepted your mortality yet, and you still have time to work on that. Secretariet feared death right before he died and so the door symbolysing death was very creepy as he read his poem, but Herb had accepted it as he indicadet in "The Telescope" season 1, he had lived a long and happy life, and he knew death was comming when he had cancer. To Herb the door was not a scary thing, just the end of a good thing, for all good things must come to an end. I know that I will put on a great show before my curtan call, so I can face the door with a sad smile, yet a litlle happy now that I know that the end will round things up for my part, and leave somthing good behind...I also fu#/&ng love this show, and I felt the same as you after seeing this episode, tho I have never felt like suiside was THIS scary before, so maybe that one guy giving advice was on to somthing. Consider me new sub, and please react to somthing half this good in the future, Im egerly waiting ;-)

As I said, I *always* feel death tapping on my shoulder. It's as anxiety inducing as it is cathartic which is such an odd way to describe it lol.

The definition of meaning is that someone cares (gives meaning) to something. so the whole meaning of life question is answered by what do you care about. Biological life in general just exists to live and expand territory it ocupies. Meaning of conscious mind is specific to every instance of it.

You said life has no meaning. No end goal. But still we can accept the absurdity of it, even thanks to an absurd cartoon about an anthropomorphic horse that involuntary cites Sartre Camus Sisyphus and existentialist philosophy lol

This episode destroyed me. It reminded me of how I almost died. Warning imma rant soo skip this if you don't wanna hear a dark rant. I had a breakdown because I have a story that kinda mirrored bojacks. I've dealt with drug abuse since I was 13 and have been fucked up since. Only recently getting sober. My best friend overdosed on oxycontin in front of me and I could've saved him. This came back to haunt me and I tried to commit suicide by slitting my throat. I've been good for a while but this episode dropped me back into that bad time of my life.

I have to strongly disagree. I come back to this episode in particular when I'm suicidal. Nothing has been more powerful in changing how I feel at the time. Secretariat especially makes me reconsider. The poem is hard to listen to yes but that's the point. Sometimes you need to hear something that you think won't help at all.

Yeah. I genuinely do and have recommended this to people who are struggling especially with suicidal thoughts. That titular poem conveys a feeling i know i felt, and i know so many people like me have felt, the "view from halfway down". And its conveyed with such understanding it pulled me off the edge. It made me feel heard and seen (haha i.c.u.) And it has been something i actually have gone back to more than once. The whole series is so beautifully written it just. *chefs kiss*

So this episode in particular has actually saved a few people who were contemplating suicide. That uncomfortable feeling that you’re feeling, along with the poem? It gives some really strong second thoughts, and that inspires them to do research. Apparently a lot of people who survive attempted jump deaths absolutely have regrets as soon as they see the view from halfway down.

Going to disagree with you. Speaking as a jumper who lived. This is PERFECT for someone with suicidal thoughts because it is so fucked up and scary. Ive seen the view from half way down and ive never been so scared and full of regret as it right then. When I hit, i was saved by a stranger. I lived but will forever have physical damage but dear god im so happy to have lived. Even on my worse days i think of that sight and...I wish i could've been scared away by something like this, made uncomfortable, because there is NOTHING romantic about suicide. Im avoiding the graphic details but please believe me, you will regret it too.

I really like the Thought that we arent some immortal Souls that have an Afterlife. It feels good for me, that after death, I just stop existing. That I can stop to think about myself, my life, my relationships, my flaws and all the Problems i had. Existing is wunderful, but it is also Pain. And it calms me to believe that at some Point, I am just not there anymore. That nothing mattered in relation to the long Time Earth existed and will exist. I will make Space for someone new who can make his own Experiences.

I have to wholeheartedly disagree with your opinion about this show not being suitable for people with suicidal thoughts. I don't ever really talk about my personal experiences on UA-cam but The View From Halfway Down saved my life. I was staring at my dad's gun for 2 hours working up the courage to end it all. I was completely alone in my home all week long so I knew no one would be able to interfere with my decision. I remember deciding to finish all my favorite shows before I off myself since I really wanted to see how they ended. Once I made it to Bojack and binged all of Seqson 6, I finally came across this episode. I started getting emotional once Sarah Lynn started singing and walking closer to the doorway but I wasn't ready when I listened to Secritariat's poem. I broke down. I started bawling my eyes out of fear, frustration, & relief all at once. I didn't eat or drink anything for 2 days after watching this episode. I never stopped to realize how genuinely terrifying it would be to make a rash decision and instantly regret it after there's no longer an option to take it all back. I genuinely feel like if I hadn't watched this episode, I would've shot myself and I wouldn't be here today sharing my experience today.

This show has really done a lot for me. I struggled with suicidal idealation for about 4 years before i watched it. I tried going to school councillors, going to mental health groups but somehow i always managed to slip through the net, id get discharged and then id wanna kill myself again. Theyd tell me i didn't have to worry about the small things i used to worry about but they never made me think like this show did. Because before i believed there'd be an afterlife or flipside or something. There is no other side, this is it. That if i jump id regret it halfway down and i won't be able to take it back, there'd be no one there to greet me, there'd be nothing. And its kinda funny im only 17 and can relate to a 40yr old depressed talking horse, but i think that show (and a lot of reflection and wanting to change) finally made me stop wanting to do it.

As someone with a depressive disorder, I think it's a great show. All the bad stuff is stuff I think about on a somewhat regular basis so it's nothing new. Secratariat's speech is powerful and accurately depicts the regret that sets in after a plan for suicide is set in motion. I've attempted suicide multiple times but I've been lucky enough to either be stopped by someone else, or got a glimpse of "the view from halfway down"
