Hi I'm trying to get my 9 week old puppy cocker spaniel to wee or poo on a puppy pad outside in a large area on a decking floor , but he sits there next to me I'm clicking my fingers saying toilet or wee wee putting my finger to the pad but still doesn't do it but when he comes in he strolls around and finds somewhere in my place and poos or wees on my kitchen floor or in the hallway please help I'm trying to teach my pup to toilet train outside on the puppy pad or decking area
Hya, sorry for the late reply, hopefully you’ve sorted it now. If not, here’s what I’d do… Try to keep the puppy somewhere safe without free reign until you think he might need a wee. When he does, pick him up and carry him outside to the area you want to use. Don’t talk to him or engage him or click your fingers or say toilet or wee or anything, just make out like you’re ignoring him and don’t give him any attention. When he’s had a sniff and looks like he’s about to wee, don’t say or do anything but be really ready to praise him in a minute. When he is actually weeing, whilst he is still doing it, say the word ‘wee wee’ or ‘toilet’ always use the same word. Keep repeating it for as long as he is weeing. Then when he stops, give him a massive fuss and play with him. This way the puppy will put 2 & 2 together and think “everytime I hear the phrase ‘wee wee’ I do a wee wee. In future, after you’ve done this hundreds of times, you will be able to say ‘wee wee’ and he will do it when you tell him to.
Great! Thank you 😊
Pleasure! Good luck 😄
This is great. Thank you!
