I just need to clarify something as the subtweets are starting up again on Twitter re: the tweet threads the authors made. I should have been more clear that it was the timing of these tweet threads, where these authors were "uplifting MG book bloggers and booksellers that have uplifted MG all year", and tagged lots of people and not me. I'm not angry they left me out of them, as I said, half of them didn't know me, but it was the timing that was really hurtful. They tagged a lot of my mutuals in those threads and so they were being retweeted by them and they would constantly come up on my TL and it would just upset me further because those same authors had been at my throat just moments before and telling me to "be kind". It was awful timing and to me felt really petty of them. I didn't make that clear enough in the video and I see how that comes across and I'm sorry about that.
The thing that made me the most angry about that situation is that it was middle grade authors that were attacking you as if you’re not the biggest voice on booktube promoting middle grades. And there wasn’t even any middle grades on the list like what?!
It truly was a head-scratching moment

Do authors not realize that saying rude things about book reviewers is probably way worse for their sales and engagement with their books than any negative review. 🤔 I’m so glad you’re not letting those unnecessary comments affect the amazing videos you create!

Why authors think everyone has to like their stuff is beyond me... and I'm an author myself! The way I see it, I didn't like everything I've ever read. Why would I was expect everyone to like what I write?
You've always gone out of your way to tell people these are your opinions about the books and not the authors as people. You're honest but polite!
These people who came at you need thicker skin or to get a new job! Criticism comes with art-making, for fuck's sake!

Thanks to you not only have I overcome crippling depression by discovering the joy of middle grade, I also received a promotion in the bookshop where I work. Plus the middle grade section has grown and more children are coming to us for wonderful books. I even have adults coming to me for recommendations for themselves. Reading is largely personal experience. Two people can read the same book, and you'll find one liked it and the other not. Keep going with your channel and you are more than enough. Never dim your light just because of the unfortunate behaviour of others. You have a gift

I'm really so sorry about this whole thing, and honestly so confused by these authors' reactions and behavior. I mean, as you said, making a "worst/most disappointing books" video is pretty common staple content on here. I've had dozens of them in my subscription feed over the past few weeks. It's not like your video was any more critical or snarky than anyone else's (though it was definitely funnier than many!), and you're always very fair in your negative reviews, being very clear about why the book didn't work for you and why you found it problematic or poorly done. I get that this has been a hard year for authors, but FFS, it's been a hard year for everyone, and I would hardly put authors at the top of the list of whose had it the worst. To get all up in their feelings because someone who reviews books had the AUDACITY to.........................review some books??? And for the MG authors to join in on it when you didn't mention a single MG book and you're one of the biggest and strongest voice for MG lit on this platform....ugh, it's just gross and unfair. I'm sorry you had to deal with this

You are MORE than enough. I have found some many new books from you and I will continue to watch your videos and stand behind you. You have cheered me up on some on my darkest days.

Wow. Maybe there needs to be an "authors who trolled me" video challenge. They might be less likely to behave badly if they knew those behaviors would be specifically called out.
The fact that they didn’t include you as a champion for middle grade books proves they don’t know what they’re talking about. You’ve been such a major champion for the community and I know how much you passion has influenced some of my reading. They were wrong, you did nothing wrong and have been nothing but classy in this whole crap situation. Please don’t listen to them, listen to those of us that actually watch the videos and know how amazing you are as a reviewer but also amazing as a person
This is the level of radical self care I aspire to have in 2021. Your videos encouraged me to pick children’s lit up this year and I’m so so sorry you’ve been put through this.
I was shocked to see this, and I find it bewildering that some of these authors had publishers who *sent you ARCs*, presumably because they wanted them reviewed? Did they stipulate that only positive reviews are allowed? The whole idea that you can lambast someone for not liking something & daring to have an opinion in public is just so strange. I can only assume that they respond similarly when reviewed by the mainstream media and demand that the TLS only prints nice things... no? 🤔
Just a little social media tip that I find is great for one’s mental health: set your Twitter notifications so you don’t get any notifications from people who don’t follow you. Anytime a tweet picks up traction beyond your following, that’s when a lot of negativity starts to blow up in your notifications tab. People who are hopping on a bandwagon to be antagonistic aren’t usually going to be people who follow you.
As an upcoming debut MG author who fully understands that review spaces are not for me - but who was watching your videos before I got my agent - I just wanted to jump in here and say THANK YOU FOR BEING AWESOME. I *love* your videos, admire your honesty, and can honestly say you are one of my favorite book people. I am sorry you had to go through such a painful experience. I wish you all the best in 2021... and now I am quietly ducking back out.
People are truly ridiculous online (and in real life - but they're bolder online). That whole situation on Twitter was astounding. They did more damage to their works than any "worst books" list ever could have, honestly.

I feel like it's so unprofessional for authors to be angry when people leave an honest review of their books. If there were only good reviews for a book it would be unrealistic, there will always be people who have different opinions on things.

I’ve learned and read so many middle grade books from your recommendations and they’ve helped me at my job (I’m a bookseller too!) I was so upset when you got all the hate for a harmless video. You were very polite and never attacked the authors in that video, just the books. Anyway, I appreciate you so much Gavin and thank you for being a great human ♥️
Children's book authors would hate to hear what their audience of kids think of their books then 😂😂 my child is ruthless about books I read to her.

Thanks Tracey, it's a shame the authors I mentioned have burned that bridge with me because I was so looking forward to either reading their books or trying out their new ones.
What is interesting to me, is the authors that were mentioned from what I could see deleted any of those tweets. Joining a bandwagon to target reviewers is disgusting.
You can tell by the tone of your voice that you’re absolutely HATING having to do this and that it’s clearly effected you on a personal level. Other videos you’ve done have been more upbeat lately and then this has come and wiped you out and it’s just not fair. You’ve done something EVERYONE does and the way these authors reacted, especially considering you didn’t even mention them in the video, has really pissed some people off in the book community and rightly so! Keep yo head up Gav, you’ve got so much support behind you!

My gosh, I'm so sorry this happened. I don't use my twitter account for reasons like this. I rarely ever hear positive stories about peoples' experiences on twitter, but really any social media can become a toxic environment. I truly hope this video and process was cleansing and healing for you, and wish you the best in the new year.
It's getting to where people can't review whatever they want, I've seen some authors on Goodreads reviewing their own book and giving it a 5-star review just to boost the ratings, I've seen people fight with people in the review comments, it's time for authors to step the hell back and realize this isn't for them.
When author's get involved and act like children it shows they're not professional. No matter how many years they have under their belt, they just lost all that experienced in my eyes.
You're one of the reasons I read a tiny bit more middle grade this year. I guess you can't please everyone. Honest reviews are what responsible reviewers do. There was nothing wrong with the video. Thanks for all you do. :)

Dutch authors will literally DM you to either remove your negative review or give them a higher rating. Especially when me and my friends were teenagers, it was terrifying to have a 30+ year old adult with a following do that to you, because they don’t think twice about sending their fans and family members after you. I’m so sorry this happened to you, I know how distressing it is ❤️

I hope you know that that whole thing is in no way a reflection on you, but a reflection on them. I watched that video and it was not mean or cruel at all. Honestly I didn't even think anything of it until I saw other people talking about your treatment on Twitter. I went to go see and by the time I got there, a lot of the comments by authors had been deleted. I think they probably just saw the title and ran with it without doing their research to form their own opinion. Again, a reflection on them, not on you. That's really shitty. Even worse because you're such an advocate for children's and middle grade books. You and Jade are the reason that I fell in love with them again. I don't own any of these books, and honestly, I won't be in the future either. I know it was directed at you, but since I love you and your channel, it upsets me as well and I don't want to support people who behave that way.
It’s ridiculous and petty for authors to come after someone for their OPINION. Do they expect everyone to like every book written? Books are polarizing, some people love a book and others hate the exact same book. As an artist or creator you have to be able to understand that your work is subjective. You cannot come after someone for voicing their personal opinion about a book. Don’t worry, it makes them look bad, not you.
If an author can't handle criticism, then they shouldn't be an author. Not everyone is going to like your books and not everyone is going to dislike your books. You take the criticism and then use it to make your next book better.
Good for you for weeding out that negativity and letting go of things that no longer bring you joy! You’re going to really notice a difference when you’re surrounded by things that only bring you joy 👍👍🎉

I watched your video and you were super respectful toward the authors of the books you mentioned. I have no interest in reading from authors like that so I won’t be picking those books up anyway. You and the Believathon have gotten me to pick up a lot of middle grade books so you’ve definitely done so much to promote and uplift the middle grade genre. Is it shitty to post honest reviews for things online now? I know some of these booktube girls have been lying through their teeth for years(no shade, get your coin, girls) and some of these authors may not be used to it, but getting negative feedback for something you create should be a natural part of the creative process. I don't understand how published authors wouldn't know this. Not everyone is going to like your creation (or your friends' creations, etc.), and you have to learn to take that in stride. Good on you for purging all that negative energy before the new year. Also, thank you for your honesty in your reviews. I just found your channel and I've already subscribed because your opinions seem trustworthy. Hopefully 2021 will be better

When you read a book you have the right to honestly review it. If you can’t take honest criticism then don’t publish a book and put it out in the world. You have to take the bad with the good. It blows my mind that in 2020, authors have STILL not learned to keep out of reader spaces. Every so often it kicks off where an author has thrown a tantrum (or worse) about a negative, or even a neutral review. Sometimes even the publisher has to step in. On the plus side, I found your channel because of the twitter drama, so hello!

Books, like art, are up for critique. Some people will love the work, some won't. If you're gonna be in that field you better get a tough skin. How disappointing and immature of them.
Gav you champion so many middle grade books and their authors all the time. Like I have always called you “The Master of Middle Grade “ which in my eyes you always have been and always will. I am shocked how some of these authors behaved as you are far far from a shitty person. I posted up other people’s review of their “worst books of 2020” to make people see it isn’t just you that does this.

That will never ever change Gav, I point blank will not stand for anyone picking on you. Yes 2020 has been a shitty year with the pandemic and people’s books being pushed back til much later but last time I checked whilst you are extremely magical you are not to blame for a global pandemic and are not responsible for delays or dwindling sales.
If it wasn’t for you championing certain books (title and author I will not name) I can safely say they wouldn’t have sold as many copies, it is only through your positivity and enthusiasm that got them seen more.
I think it is shameful how you were victimised online and I question... did the same authors respond to other people’s video’s of the same nature in exactly the same way??? If by chance they are watching or reading this....daydreamwishes7 on Twitter as I shared other videos showing a variety of people doing exactly the same.
I seriously think that Gavin is owed a huge apology for the despicable behaviour on Twitter that was aimed at him and the people doing it really need to think of their actions as it could be viewed even more wrong, just my opinion
I never read middle grade before watching you and other similar channels who about them. It really opened my eyes to how fun, meaningful and just plain awesome they can be. So, it blows my mind that authors would come for you when you’ve done a ton to encourage people to give a try and appreciate middle grade and children’s books. 🤷🏼♀️

Gavin, I'll be honest in saying I only discovered your channel recently. I have since watched a LOT of your videos, including the "tragic" video that was under fire..... And I love your content and your reviews and recommendations!
In my humble opinion, reviews and book opinions are for book readers and book lovers, they are not for the authors.
Also, no matter how amazing a book might be, on any genre, it will NEVER please everyone. It's just not possible (not unless the entire reading community had and used the exact same single brain cell.....).
Don't pay attention to all the negativity. You don't deserve it.
And thanks to you, I've discovered so many wonderful middle-grade books!! So I think you've done a great job at promoting and reviewing this genre.
So, you know what Gavin? Jealousy is a b*tch....! Ignore the nasty comments, because when people go looking for negativity, they find it, like authors who look for negative/less glowing reviews.

Good for you! All the crap surrounding it was unwarranted and ridiculous. You’re such a proponent of middle grade books; so, unhaul, sage your shelves, block some jerks...whatever ya need. They can get over it, because it wasn’t even about them.
Because of you I was able to find MG that turned my non-reader son into a devourer of books. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the work you do to spotlight books. Your passion shines! Your critical reviews are done kindly. If some authors can't handle the constructive criticism, perhaps they shouldn't be in the business. How do they expect to grow and improve if they don't know what needs improvement? It heartens me to see some authors in the comments supporting you through this.

You have been following you ever since Believeathon 2 and ever since I have only seen you doing your very best for the MG section. Too few ppl regard MG as an equally important part of the book world, but as a teacher I can tell you IT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT! Put the right book into a young readers hands and you can CHANGE THEIR LIFE! You are turning the spotlight to so many authors and you also help me find so many great books which I loved and when I passed the on to my pupils they would come back and ask for more books. This is how much good and wonderful you do and I am so grateful! I know it hurts and I know you are disappointed about some ppl out there, but I am here to tell you that there are 10 times as much ppl who are loving your stuff and are waiting for every new video by you. Keep doing what you do, you are so great at it, you bring joy to readers of every age!

As an author myself, I can understand if criticism hurts from time to time, but my god, do those authors you mentioned come off like spoiled little jerks. Attacking readers is never the answer. In fact, that’s how an author loses respect in a big fucking hurry. I’m sorry you had to go through that unnecessary shit, Gavin. You deserve better treatment from the Twitterverse going forward. I am so sorry that happened Gavin! Authors need to realize that some videos are made for the entertainment of the viewer and (surprisingly) it isn't all abou them. You're content and readathons are one of the main reasons I have started to pick up middle grade!! I don’t really do Twitter because it is intimidating - so I didn’t see this go down, but it breaks my heart that they would bully their biggest promo

Just because you didn’t like it doesn’t mean someone else won’t but with their negativity toward you and other book people will turn people from their books. I hope that getting rid of their books will allow you to sleep better! 😴 I have only ever read the first pretty little liars book. I too was once obsessed with the show, when Emily and Paige were together, hated that they had her end up with Allison. Gosh. Love you gav! ❤️

Thank you for posting this video. I wasn't familiar with the names of any of the authors attacking you on Twitter, but am disappointed to see that some of the authors who you've championed so strongly felt it was appropriate to stab you in the back like that. Twitter really does bring out the worst in people 😞 Good for you for unhauling them and moving past it, you're far stronger than I could ever be (and hey, at least it got a bunch of new viewers for your amazing channel! 🥰).
