This song WAKE UP was off the Brand Nubian album ONE FOR ALL. Another standout track is STEP TO THE REAR. In the Bronx that song blasted out of speakers for a year. Grand Puba had a ridiculous flow. Years later as a solo artist he did a really cool laid back song called A LITTLE OF THIS.
Yep. There was actually a time in hip hop when knowing how to read and express yourself clearly wasn't considered corny but hardcore. This entire album is bonafied heat.
When this song came out it would make me cry to understand the problems stacked against the black man. Yet we possess unlimited strength to overcome the struggles through wisdom, knowledge, truth and understanding of self. What's even more sad today, mainstream knowledge in music is so limited. The opportunity to reach kids at that early age to counter the traps of the system. A bunch of songs came out when George Floyd died. They were reactionary and didn't understand the root cause of the knee on the neck. This is what Brand Nubian speak to in their music.
Well said. It’s very limited nowadays, I feel it’s done intentionally in my honest opinion. I felt all those songs that came out when George Floyd died was strategic way designed by the labels to capitalize off our pain, that’s why it was only a moment instead of becoming the norm. By the way how do I pronounce your name, I’ve been trying to shout you out but I didn’t want to mispronounce your name
PRSPR You hit the nail on the head. Brand Nubian was black balled on MTV for calling white folks devils. Puba lost a clothing deal with Tommy Hilfiger cause of it. Leor Cohen head of Def Jam marketing and head of elektra records marketing told Puba back off the 5% talkand calling folks devils and your shit will get played on radio. Puba couldn't do it. After that labels started to filter what artist would say.
Brand Nubian were street as well. Check out, "Punks Jump Up to get beat down" and for more deep 5% raps. Check out Meaning of the 5%, Proper Education, and anything by X Clan. These won't give high click numbers. So you may have to listen off camera. It's your decision .
Grand Puba. Was my favorite favorite favorite MCee of all time. Even higher than Rakim, Nas or JayZ. Ice Cube comes real close. I used to study Puba for hours. I would practice to freestyle like him for 30-35 minutes straight. And if I said any weak lines I had to start over the clock. I use to train to be a rapper like ballers practice to shoot 3's. I was nice, but I never got my shot and so I had to move on in life. Puba was like Nas, but more melodic. You should listen to, "What's the 411" he helped launch Mary J Blige career. Alas Puba wasn't focused and disciplined, he fed off raw talent. And that was his demise. He would show up 7 hours late to a video shoot. 5 hours late to record. Rappers after him learned from his mistakes.
Good looking out on Brand Nubian... I used to listen to them a lot back in the day... Grand Puba was part of a group back in the 80's (Masters of Ceremony)...
The Five Percenters are still active. The official name is The Nation of Gods and Earths. If you look up Supreme Mathematics and Supreme Alphabet, the lyrics will make even more sense.
This post is deep. The New York Times on March 1, 1979 published the article ANCIENT NUBIAN ARTIFACTS YIELD EVIDENCE OF EARLIEST MONARCHY by Boyce Rensberger. Nubia (present day Sudan) predated the Ancient Egyptian civilization (one of the names of Ancient Egypt was KMT or KEMET). Nubia is the father of Ancient Egypt/KEMET. Narmer also known as Memes migrated from Nubia and established the first dynasty of KEMET. To put into perspective how influential Nubia is I'll give two examples. In the Bible you see the word "Amen" stated after a prayer. Amen/Amon/Amun was a deity worshiped in Nubia. Amun means "Hidden One." In Sudan there is a mountain called Jebel Barkal. Jebel Barkal means "Sacred Mountain," it is where the Nubians believed "the Hidden One" Amun (Amen/Amon) resided. In the Bible there is the story of Moses going to a mountain to receive the Ten Commandments from God. This story is most-likely inspired by the Nubia god Amun living in Jebel Barkal. Western Civilization is credited to the Greeks. The Ancient Greeks went to Egypt/KEMET to first learn then eventually conquer. The Greek deities are based on the "Gods of Egypt." And the main Gods of Egypt/KEMET Osiris/Asar, Isis/Aset, Horus/Heru originated in Nubia, present day Sudan! I believe the group Brand Nubia named themselves because of this knowledge.
SALUTE PRSPR FOR FINALLY REACTING TO THIS TRACK! ONE OF THE FIRST GROUPS THAT INTODUCED ME TO "KNOWLEDGE OF SELF" & THE IMPORTANCE OF OUR PEOPLE IN HISTORY!✊🏾
Yo Prs Your listening to Hip Hop Greatness My dude omg lol damn I'm so glad your digging in the crates 💯💯 The sample in the chorus is Everybody Loves The Sunshine by Roy Ayers and you probably heard it in Mary J Blige's Song My Life
“I wrote this on the day of Wisdom Power all being born to myself” he wrote this song on the 25th day of whatever month 2= Wisdom 5= Power/Refinement all being born to God=7
This was the end of an era. From this song the 'gate keepers' of hip hop money making markets turned away from conscious emcees and promoted self destruction.
Okay Lil Brother...this made me Proud ...to see somebody around your age understanding this song...I was like 15 when this joint came out and I felt and understood every word, even though I was on that street type back then too, that was where I was from and felt also, but being my age now 46, i don't even be feeling that no more and definitely don't listen to none of the new.... but yeah, this is a powerful joint and I wish more Young dudes could decipher it and break it down like you did...they stopped pushing this type music it was really popular back then and was influential... they stopped promoting, it stopped getting radio play and they started just pushing the negative Drugs, Murder, Gang, Tricking, ...definitely was an agenda and look at the results now....Rap game is full of Negative Energy and that negativity is Spreaded. ...Salute though Young Man.💪🏽

Roy Ayers song Sunshine is where the sample is from...which is a dope song itself,he has a few other dope ones...his stuff is mostly instrumentals...which made it even easier to rhyme to...
See people have to understand that there were versions of the Wu-Tang Clan before the Wu-Tang Clan ever existed. Like this group in particular, #GrandPuba was a solo artist prior to him getting with the other two artist in this group. They eventually got together and form this group, #BrandNubian. But the difference between them and the Wu-Tang is, Wu-Tang has a lot more members & members who put out solo albums. This stuff was actually COMMON back then, it’s just that Wu-Tang was the most POPULAR & SUCCESSFUL version of it.

Peace. The 5% lesson of the God's and Earth's was born by Clarence 13X. The original black man is represented as the Sun. He spreads his shine onto the Earth which is the black woman. And the children are the stars. Knowledge = original man Wisdom = Original woman Understanding = original children
Alright PRSPR I have to impart relevant info in several posts. The "sunshine" sample comes from the Roy Ayers song EVERYBODY LOVES THE SUNSHINE. This song has been sampled numerous times. Mary J. Blige's MY LIFE (my favorite of her tracks) and Erule's LISTEN are two songs that sampled the Roy Ayers song and totally rocked it. Erule is an underground rapper from the west coast with a ridiculous flow. LISTEN was featured in the independent classic film KIDS. Roy Ayers did a remake of EVERYBODY LOVES THE SUNSHINE with the group he produced called RAMP. RAMP stands for Roy Ayers Music Productions. The film Straight Outta Compton has the young Dr. Dre lying in his bed listening to Everybody Loves The Sunshine while doing hand gestures. When you have the time first listen to the original version of Everybody Loves The Sunshine by Roy Ayers then the version by RAMP then MY LIFE by Mary J. Blige then LISTEN by Erule.

One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite albums of all time, but NGE is also a religious cult - as most religions are. It’s kind of Scientology-ish. Also Nation of Islam and NGE are different though they have similar roots. Anyhow stay thinking critically, because it’s doesn’t follow logic or science. But it’s actually still pretty interesting. But they are also questioning religion. So I love it. Just don’t get sucked in because all religions are mythologized. Also, I understand what you’re saying about if you know you’re right you can’t be tricked. If you Have knowledge you can’t be tracked. But we see it all the time. People think that they have knowledge, people think they are right, and they are absolutely wrong but they perpetuate bullshit. Don’t fall for that either. @TheColdrush22 Definitely agree with you on that, I don’t know much about it besides the surface level stuff but that was enough for me to know it’s a cult with teachings that I personally don’t agree and believe in. I don’t know much about Scientology to draw the comparison but I heard they’re a crazy cult too. You’re spot on fam, many people don’t question which leads to them to being brainwashed with lies.
