Yay!! Story spun from a song! First heard the song nearly 40 years ago, at a S.F. convention. Nice to have a story, even if it doesn't match the song exactly. "Poetic licence" covers a plethora of abuses and improvements. yousurei'mnotaribot did a wonderful job.
Seriousl... Oh, so seriously, I enjoyed this very much. I have been listening to 'Dawson's Christian' ever since I first heard the song as performed by Vic Tyler. Others have come along and sang of this ghost ship in their own way, and I've always wanted someone to write a story. I have one buried somewhere deep in an old computer that remarkably still works. My story is survived by the human crew, well hidden in the 'Christian' as she dies, only to return to fight again. And always labeled 'the ghost ship'. LOL I love this version. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Thanks for that, go look up the song if you have never heard it!. Okay...its a prequel, all about how the ship happened. Any gender issues are your own.
Sorry I had not seen that you had read this story. I just posted a link to the song on this page of yours Reddit Stories - Why Humans Will Always Win & An unbelievable tale |Humans Are Space Orcs | TFOS1232
Roughly. In this story, the Human Engineer used (possibly) forbidden Tech to scan the crew, and download their "essence" life force, personalities; into a computer system. Essentially allowing them to "live on". After destroying the pirates, Christian's crew has the choice to return to their homes or remain in the Black and continue to protect. They chose to remain and fight. In the Song, it is implied that during the battle, the crew's "essence" became embedded into the ship itself. Either way, you have a self aware warship that flat out refuses to die and continues the hunt for evil.
If the power was failing what use was digitizing the crew? Life support can be turned off for a while before problems occur, so it isn't that. Is it just the sped up repair? What are the ghosts mentioned? Why fight the ship? Did they think the Ai would not go willingly even though it proposed that plan? Also what is that "we stand" business? Some repairs surely need a drydock. What use is it roaming the dark? Also the engineer said "not no ghosts this time"? Wouldn't that mean she already lived this through and was reinstated into a bio body before?

man, that's a ghostship story and a half. great story.
It's based loosely on a song. I've linked it elsewhere in the comments.
@@wintersking4290 The song is called Dawson's Christian, by Vixy and Tony I think.
@@NomadicPhoton why is Jaime a woman in the story? It's a man in the song.
@@Albtraum_TDDC I have no idea.

What song? Link?
Edit: nvm, found it.
40 YEARS AGO!! I didn't know it was that old! It is a good song, but I thought it was a decade old at most. Cool!

This is one of my favorite songs.
And here I thought the engineer said no more go ships. Leave it to humanity to be able to intentionally create their own intentional afterlife vessel
lol

Love the song and then this pops up in my recommendations.
An excellent reading of an excellent adaptation!
Dawson's Christian and her crew is actually rather old story. There are multiple versions of it at this point, this being one of them.
Why is Jaime a woman in the story? It's a man in the song.
I'm not sure this guy is not a robot.
Studies continue.
Agro squirl?
Link to the song the story is (loosely) based on: ua-cam.com/video/PjxMieuRPe4/v-deo.html

Hmm it seems the story and the song only share the name in common, the stories are totally different.
