When growing up on a mixed farm in the 1970's and 80's we had : MF35 & MF 65 initially, then MF178 was added . A MF185 then later replaced the MF65 . Later a MF 590 replaced the MF185. I liked them all, but my two favourites were the 35 and the 178 . Remember seeing the new 1080 at the Royal Show when it came out.
People badmouthing these tractors yes the transaxle was a problem in the 1080's my dad ran 2 1080's 1100's and 1150's for years but they were damn good tractors otherwise we still run old Massey's today 1130 that has been cranked up and a 85 best tractors you could ask for the fiat hesstons were good tractors too and ran way cheaper but I love my red and silver
I am rebuilding a 318 motor for my 1080, the perking have a design fault with the sleeves, that's why they blow head gaskets, also the block on the later 318 are a lot thicker, I noticed my longer thread head studs were in the wrong way, they are a good engine, the rear end is made of cast steel not cast iron like a lot of tractors, if parts do break then one can machine new parts superior to the original, these tractors are made for anyone to fix, l am updating mine with new types of filters, alternators, I have taken one completely apart and criticism's are really not valid except they use mild steel in critical components, the only real concern is the exhaust, "Do Not Let Water Enter The Top of the Exhaust" as water will enter the cylinder head as the exhaust manifold has no sump, I can assure anyone that's after one these are a good tractor once you are in the know.

how much did that one cost before restoration. there is one for action and its in ruff shape. hoping i might get it cheap

Sadly the 4/ 318 engine as fitted to the 1080 and the later 595 models had a nasty habit of blowing head gaskets.
