I'm actually really surprised to see any negative comments on this video. I pretty much consistently cried throughout. To be in a position where I can't share who I am without knowing I will have no one left is my life burden.I hope to be as brave as Ellen or Ian. To be a woman who likes women in a culture where a woman's worth is based on the desire men have for her is difficult, but if we have to face this in order for the future to be a better place for people like me, then so be it.

This series is such a genuis idea. I've been wanting to learn about the LGBT communities outside of the USA ever since i visited Iceland and saw how open they were about gay bars there. The subtitles at 14:13 say: "Since it's illegal, gay love is in a sense taboo."
Whereas what she's actually saying is: "Since there's nothing set in the law, gay love is in a sense taboo."
I can't speak for others, but the impression I get from these two different renderings is quite different.

As a straight person, this is a really interesting look. It's certainly sobering to be reminded how easy it is for me to travel anywhere and not even have to consider the types of stigma present even in a country as progressive as Japan. Rock on gay folks, you don't get enough credit.

God, I cried so much watching this. I'm "out", but I'm not... No one in my family knows. Just some my friends and a couple of mentors. Seeing the oppression and the hardships of LGBTQs in Japan broke my heart, and then seeing the marriage at the end and the guy's mom accepting him for who he is broke my heart some more. All I've ever wanted was to be accepted and loved for who I am, but I'm terrified my loved ones will leave me and never look back.

I actually enjoyed this episode a lot more than I expected. Usually I'm not too into the more LGBT-centric videos that Vice puts out just because I usually find them to be cursory and lacking in depth. This episode on the other hand had oodles of depth, investigating the LGBT experience in Japan which up until now I had heard almost nothing about but I assumed was alright due to Japan's general secularism.
Gotta say the entire thing was pretty eye opening and the ending was pretty intense. Hope the rest of the series can keep up this standard of quality.

This video should make people thinking, that equality isn't self-evident in every country. Very interesting to see how many homosexuals have to be afraid of being judged by superficial people. The scene at last where that guy was coming out to her mother, give that topic such a good perspective and it might make homosexuals getting more confident with the situation. "And that line: What doesn't kill you makes you gayer". good one

This is why I love, Vice. They are the rawest, most accepting, non judgmental producers of documentaries and films that are the highest quality and the most insightful. They are the counter culture discovery channel, bbc, whatever documentary company you name. They don't shy away from making controversial issues known to the public. And talk about so openly. Love it!

My mom had the same sequence of reactions, responses, and demeanor as the mother in this video but I had only noticed this through her voice over the phone. When I watched that young man come out to his mom, it really gave me a depiction of how my mom would have reacted if I had told her in person instead of over the phone. The fact that the mother in this video physically resembles my mother as well really made me feel guilty and like a coward again for telling my mom over the phone...

redlead42 Thank you so much for the encouragement! I definitely don't regret coming out. But the way I did, I think, was selfish. I did it over the phone, where I wasn't available in person to answer her questions, console her, or anything. I had to hear from my sister later on that she couldn't sleep throughout the night, was crying a whole lot, and was calling my sister to vent and ask questions.

Not trying to be pessimistic but i have the feeling that deep down the mother didn't accept that fact of his son, as if she held back in front of the cameras. But who knows.

Christ my stomach was all in knots near the end there. When I came out to my mom I already knew she was LGBTQ+ positive so I never had a moment like that. I'm so happy that ended well for that man.

and bringing back the mom was pretty dope.

I love you guys played some Trippple Nippple in the background!! Love this band. This was a really good episode because I had no idea that being gay in Japan was this hard. I feel a lot less ignorant now. Cried when the guy talked to his mother when he came out. I'm glad she came back and talked more. This was amazing. Thank you so much.

That mother was so loving. Although she was the odd in Japan vs Gay Culture, it helped me gain faith in humanity.

I love Ellen Page out and proud. I never knew how endearing she was. Her dorky side now has this innocent lovable facet to it.
Before she seemed so scared and timid but now she's just this soft spoken dork that's winning me over.
You can really tell she's being 100% genuine in this. Good for her, congrats on living your truth and embracing who you are!! You're awesome Ellen!

it saddens me because in japan, its accepting compared to south korea... so after watching this my heart not only aches for the LGBT of japan but it breaks for the LGBT in places like South korea and other places that are even less accepting than japan

watching this makes me realize how lucky i am of being surrounded by a lot of accepting people who has always supported me. Spain is a great country for being gay. I couldn't have been luckier to have been born in spain.

This is some really great stuff guys. I absolutely love to see Ellen out there rockin it out and making all this more open. I could sit here and watch her do her thing all day. She has become such a huge part of the movement now and is a beacon for all of those still terrified to come out of that closet. Much respect to both Ellen and Ian, you are so awesome. Cant wait for episode 2.

I loved this episode. A very open and fair portrayal of Japanese society as it relates to LGBT. The last part with the mother and son was very moving, that could have been any son in the world coming out to his mother.

This is amazing! It's so interesting to see how other countries/cultures view homosexuality even though it's not always easy. Mad props to the guy who came out to his mom, that was so incredibly brave! I can't wait to see the next part and I can't wait for the whole world to see this and spread a better understanding of the struggles LGBT people face in different cultures and hopefully create a better environment for LGBT people in the end.

Amazing! Congratulations to all those involved! The bit made me cry when mother held Ellen's friend's hand and you could see how you don't always need language to communicate you can just exchange emotions and speak the language of love. peace x
