The thing that makes him stand out for me his total, 100% self-confidence. Even when sometimes it's not merited, he is so self assured without coming across as arrogant. I hope he manages to get through a fair few more epics before his time ends.
Prometheus was a fantastic movie. The problems only came from those who wanted a quick, easy answer. I have no problem whatsoever with Prometheus, despite small and basic tropic nitpicking - and while there are many who have similar complaints with Covenant (as it's a flawed but equally good film, as Prometheus was), we have all been treated to an extremely high-quality science fiction film. Despite being sold as prequels to Alien, all these films will ever be able to do, is to inspire one's imagination, and to disappoint whoever's left. I think Ridley's legacy is sound, because the character of David is an extremely well-written, vain, self-masturbatory challenge to those who fancy themselves as gods, and thus, better than those who might disagree. How dogmatic is that?
read the short story 'at the mountains of madness' by HP Lovecraft.. you'll find a new appreciation of this movie. it was an incredible spin on that story. if you can get past those two silly moments (charlize running in a straight line, and the guy playing with the space cobra) and just realize that they were there to move the plot along, its a phenomenal movie.
Photographic memory. How can anyone else compete. I’m blown away how good the original Alien film looks. That was the only film that ever scared me as a child. I watched it again a few nights ago after watching Prometheus and Alien Covenant first. 1979 but the way it fits in with all the later films is really incredible
Sir Ridley is more concerned and interested with/by Replicants/Androids than he is with humans, this doesn't sit well with some people. But for many of us it's exactly what we want him to be interested in. The way he's trying to tie the Alien universe in with the Blade Runner universe is absolutely fascinating to me personally.
My most anticipated movie since District 9....I cant wait for this EPIC!Im trying so hard to write movie scripts and become a director one day,and this has helped me so much!We are so lucky to have a resource like UA-cam to learn from the greatest directors in the industry!
Fantastically interesting. I've never cared about anything Ridley Scott's done before (i know, i'm a bad person) but this interview made him and his work infinitely more interesting to me. Keep it up Nerdist.
I'm sorry I have to say this: most of the people who say they didn't like Prometheus are the same people who say that Aliens (1986) is better than Alien (1979). Some people prefer sci-fi action over sci-fi horror which is what Ridley Scott perfected in the first Alien film. BTW: Just in case people don't know Cameron directed the sequel Aliens and made Ripley more of an action heroine blasting alien baddies and having a motherly instinct by bonding/rescuing Newt. This is my theory which I mean with the deepest sentiment for one of the most amazing technically driven and innovative director to ever work in the scifi genre. I don't get why some commenters say he is being arrogant when he seemed very humble and forthright with the interviewer; maybe it's me being a fangirl, I am not saying I like every film he's made but let me say this- Blade Runner (1982) was considered a flop when it came out, now it is known as one of the leading cinematic achievements in film, not just th scifi genre; in film history, period. I believe Prometheus will be the same mythic, cult immortality like what, ironically the character Peter Weyland hoped for and wanted.
Agreed. Until Alien '79 came along, no one had seen anything like that, movies weren't made like that. Kubrick's 2001 gave us beauty, Alien spat in your eye, they're like two halves of the same coin. When Alien '79 aired in the cinemas, the audience reacted like never before, they scream and puked and cried and then came back for more! It's movie history.
blackwell008 it's not that I found Prometheus boring, I found it overly complicated.. more so than it needed to be. A lot of it didn't make sense to me and many others I watched it with but I'm lookin forward to covenant
I think Scott's Alien is MILES ahead of Aliens. So just based on the history, I think Scott was better suited that Cameron to do this movie. And Prometheus is a stunningly made movie. The visuals are remarkable, as are the camera shots. Effects are incredibly well done. All in all, Ridley Scott did everything he could with this movie. The problems are in the script. I saw it the day it opened, and several times since, and I've always felt that the script felt like a rough draft.
''i'm working on the back seat of my car'' i would do anything to be around this incredible Director, if you need a driver tell me. waiting for Alien covenant and Blade Runner 2049 as a huge fan of Blade Runner (1st) i'm thrilled about the cast, actors and director, D.Villeneuve will make a terrific movie
So jealous of Ridley Scott's ability to draw his own storyboards. I admit it. Saying he's a brilliant film director is an understatement ((filmgeek crush
this guy is such a legend, i loved this movie, i get that it was stark without much room for comfort or affection and not to everyone taste so I applaud ridley for making the vision he wants to make... to me this film is a modern classic, i am somewhat puzzled why most critics don't get it, maybe because it didn't have a love story really beyond the love of science
i really cannot wait for this film. it sounds amazing! just seeing things reappear from Alien and seeing the giger design is enough for me to get excited but because ridley scott is making this film, it gives you a sense of faith that it will be a good character driven story
Geoff, I just stumbled across your channel this evening. Thank you for bringing some interesting and inspiring content to UA-cam regarding film and story. I know what you do is a lot of work. There's a lot of negative comments I noticed here right off the bat. Too bad really. It's just entertainment folks. The people that bring it to you work very hard for a very long time to do so. Going to lengths most of us can't or won't just for our entertainment. Lighten up a bit.
I'm sorry, I have no idea which review it was I saw that photo in, as I've watched so many. If I come across it again, I'll send you the link. The holes were quite apparent in the freeze frame (taken from above and towards one side of that set).
Well, I guess I'm in agreement with Ridley on not getting ill (or too ill) while reading the back of a car. Great questions and answers! Can't wait to see more! - Jason
Great first episode, fantastic interview to kick things off - it's not like we'd get a face-to-face like this 'down in someone's basement', for example! I think the editor needs a word, mind; this doesn't have to be a nerd Charlie Rose. Hold off on the 'fade-to-blacks', trim the interviewees for efficiency (difficult to do that with RS, I know!) and pace, and try not to be so solemn. Tweaks here and there, this will be an essential watch.
The symbolism in Prometheus is not the real problem here, its the big Ideas that Prometheus is exploring, about creation and evolution thats the controversial ticket, thats whats really bugging the skeptics because it is beyond their own comprehension.
Scott may seem to certain people as a bit arrogant, but he really isnt. He just know a lot about what he does. He's been doing it for years and naturally he is going have a lot to say when a question is asked
I mean't to mention the superb Ain't it Cool as well in the comment. I would like to congratulate you for the launch of the channel I have really enjoyed it. could you mark the episodes as opposed to the extras maybe numbering them, my muddled brain has trouble telling them apart.
i dont know if someone already mentioned it or noticed it, but i think the proportion in size engineer vs human in alien 1979 is bigger than in prometheus 2012....is it not?
Ridley Scott's given us some great movies. The best thing about him is his no-nonsense demeanor. Very non-Hollywood. Prometheus was a very interesting movie that covered some very big themes. Great stuff!
Pretty sure those eggs were put there by the engineers to use as weapons, then something went wrong and one of them hatched or something like that. The eggs must have been put under the blue lasers and mist deliberately (I think it was Scott who suggested they protected them somehow which is presumably why they survived intact for thousands of years).
Because it IS part of the (Ridley canon atleast) alien franchise, but it is its own story. there are even lines in the movie that are said in the exact same way they are in alien/aliens.
Ridley Scott is awesome he's made most of the great films without Alien a lot of other films and games would have never been made he set the standards for future films and games I game wait the see the follow up to Prometheus It will be just as good if not better fantastic directer.
ridley scott is pure genius , cannot wait for bladerunner (2) . prometheus ticks all the boxes ,outstanding. ridley took it where a story can evolve ,the old alien films had been taken too far in the wrong direction, but that is my own personel view.
Blade Runner - Ridley clearly hinted that the possible sequel/prequel movie he would direct would involve diving into the minds of the Tyrell Corp. Thumbs up if you find this possible story arc Fascinating!
I would love to meet Sir Ridley. A true visionary who exudes positivity from every pore! He is almost twice my age, yet he would appear to have twice my energy... I would love to know his secret? 🤔 What I do find funny though, is that he essentially declares his own genius in most interviews, and who the hell could argue? I find that quite endearing, I wish more creatives did that... But first be sure if checked... we can back it up! 😊🏆🇬🇧
well to be honest, they deployed the scanners, they didn't actually have the map on them as far as I saw, it was on the ship. and secondly, I'm fairly certain that med pod was destined to be used by Weyland.
One thing that always impresses me when I listen to Ridley Scott is his wits. This guy is amazingly intelligent and focused.
he's drunk
frepi
What are talking about? In all his interviews he just rambles on and on.
The thing that makes him stand out for me his total, 100% self-confidence. Even when sometimes it's not merited, he is so self assured without coming across as arrogant. I hope he manages to get through a fair few more epics before his time ends.
Tremendous director! He draws in film.
Arjun Kaul he literally draws the scenes on paper himself. He has the best eye for cinema
This all seems so revolutionary and fresh to me, I can't this video and Prometheus more than 12 years now, woweee.
PROMETHEUS WAS A GOOD MOVIE
SwakkzMC great
SwakkzMC meh...
SwakkzMC it wasn't that great dude. Overly complicated too.
Prometheus was a fantastic movie. The problems only came from those who wanted a quick, easy answer. God I love this guy! He's always been my favorite director! Hope he lives until he's 150 years old!
I love him too. He’s great. I hope the best for him.
Wise...I could sit and listen to him for hours.
Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, and Black Hawk Down are my favorite movies by him! Ridley Scott is awesome!!
Photographic memory. How can anyone else compete. I’m blown away how good the original Alien film looks. That was the only film that ever scared me as a child. Reminds me of the way Isaac Asimov slowly worked his Robot stories into his Foundation series.
Every Ridley Scott interview is so insightful...he's quite something else...thanks for uploading!
I could listen to Ridley talk for hours
Nerdist, these shows are blowing my mind. It's like you know exactly all the things I love.
some might think scott is arrogant.no, he's just supremely confident in his abilities. all great directors need that. a true master.
As a screenwriter, I think to myself, " I want to work with THAT guy!!!" Ridley will always be one of my favorites.
My most anticipated movie since District 9....I cant wait for this EPIC!Im trying so hard to write movie scripts and become a director one day,and this has helped me so much!We are so lucky to have a resource like UA-cam to learn from the greatest directors in the industry!
This was great, this man really deserves his respect. Thank you for upping this.
Thanks for the video. I 'm an old school fan of Ridley's films and I can't wait for this picture.
Great interview, I could listen to Mr Scott talk all day, he is such an intelligent and interesting person.
Ridley Scott is 74! The guy looks and behaves like he's in his early 50s! May he continue like this for years to come!
This is awesome and makes me even more excited for Prometheus. Thank you for posting this!!
Great interview. Really enjoyed it.
Fantastically interesting. I've never cared about anything Ridley Scott's done before (i know, i'm a bad person) but this interview made him and his work infinitely more interesting to me.
Keep it up Nerdist.
woah...this is a GREAT new show. looks great. excellent interview. perfect first guest. I cannot WAIT for Prometheus

these prometeus bullshit gona get lost in time its nothibg about alien, real alioen fans we ignore all these shit,HAIL DAN OBANNON
blackwell008
You're a mumbling moron.
When so many things don't make basic sense it takes you out of the movie.
I think Scott's Alien is MILES ahead of Aliens. So just based on the history, I think Scott was better suited that Cameron to do this movie. And Prometheus is a stunningly made movie. one of the only movies where after i left the theater, i felt like the way i perceive life or the universe has changed somewhat
A very pragmatic worker, everything he does it for the outcome, no bullshit.
Great upload, thanks a lot Nerdist!
Big fan of Scott's movies. Quite the fascinating interview.
Keep doing episodes like this.

Ridley is one of the top 5 directors of my time. Imagine that! That is how awesome he is.
This insight was awesome! Thanks for this.
Wow, this channel. So much awesome.
Thanks for the comment, this is info i can do something with. I was letting off some steam without having all the facts ready, ill def. look into it
I get why people didnt like prometheus. But its hard for me to hate. Prometheus and covenant were both great to me idgaf who disagrees
Yes!
That space suit prop to the far right of the room is from Prometheus. One can spot it in one of the commercials.
i really cannot wait for this film. it sounds amazing! just seeing things reappear from Alien and seeing the giger design is enough for me to get excited but because ridley scott is making this film, it gives you a sense of faith that it will be a good character driven story

Happy 75th Birthday Ridley Scott
He's so right about a canvas never being done, thats how i am.
I'm sorry, I have no idea which review it was I saw that photo in, as I've watched so many. If I come across it again, I'll send you the link. The holes were quite apparent in the freeze frame (taken from above and towards one side of that set).
This is a great idea, and starting it off with Ridley is brilliant :)
Well, I guess I'm in agreement with Ridley on not getting ill (or too ill) while reading the back of a car.
Great questions and answers! Can't wait to see more!
- Jason
Thank you Ridley Scott for the amazing stories and worlds your vision has brought to life on the screen.
Great Interview, No dumb questions Very Interesting.
Also must have been cool to go visit His Offices in L.A
those blade runner visuals, and alien, still hold up like gangbusters
Now that's a good interview.
Excellent interviewer
One question, from what film is the orange diving pressure suit in background from?
Great first episode, fantastic interview to kick things off - it's not like we'd get a face-to-face like this 'down in someone's basement', for example! I think I can bin my TV. The Nerdist Channel has taken over my life....!!!!!!
Scott may seem to certain people as a bit arrogant, but he really isnt. He just know a lot about what he does. He's been doing it for years and naturally he is going have a lot to say when a question is asked
What a ingenious man, I plan to make movies as interesting and original as his one day!
I adore this man.
He's so awesome

I'll give Sunshine a rewatch on your recommendation!
Nice insight into the possible new Blade Runner movie. Felt Geoff could've said thanks at the end!
Ridley Scott is a genius and yes Prometheus WILL be incredible!
Good interview.

Great post. Scot is always fascinating, Right.
I'ed love more of this type of content please. maybe other departments lighting camera sfx. Thanks.
Awesome stuff. I can't wait to see this movie.
@Intro
I thought this was an interview for Ridley Scott?
How often can we look forward to the Hero Complex? Weekly? Monthly?
Ridley Scott's given us some great movies. The best thing about him is his no-nonsense demeanor. Very non-Hollywood. Prometheus was a very interesting movie that covered some very big themes. Great stuff!

Yeah, Prometheus was indeed a good movie, I hope when it comes out on Blu Ray, that it was have alot of special features.
Blade Runner - Ridley clearly hinted that the possible sequel/prequel movie he would direct would involve diving into the minds of the Tyrell Corp.
Thumbs up if you find this possible story arc Fascinating!
Just like politicians he never answers the questions and goes on tangents about other stuff :p
its crazy yh when you see someone who is good at what they do around tht age, it makes you wonder how they were when they we in their 20's.
i cant wait for prometheus though gunnabe awesome!!!!
I Really Like Ridley's Humor, He is always Serious like ur not Going to throw a Jokes on him
I would love to meet Sir Ridley. A true visionary who exudes positivity from every pore!

Amen brother.
AWESOME!
love that movie alot!
Best movie ever made from Scott .
I am really looking forward to this film. Can I also use your time machine to travel through time and watch the movie? I promise to be back soon.
If I could be anyone in the world, it would be Ridley Scott
If I was an actor, my first choice of director to work with would be Ridley.
well to be honest, they deployed the scanners, they didn't actually have the map on them as far as I saw, it was on the ship. and secondly, I'm fairly certain that med pod was destined to be used by Weyland.
can anyone tell me the timepiece Sir Ridley is wearing??
What a fucking great interview 👍
I NEED TO MEET THIS MAN BEFORE HE DIES.
