      Prometheus was a fantastic movie. The problems only came from those who wanted a quick, easy answer. I have no problem whatsoever with Prometheus, despite small and basic tropic nitpicking - and while there are many who have similar complaints with Covenant (as it's a flawed but equally good film, as Prometheus was), we have all been treated to an extremely high-quality science fiction film. Despite being sold as prequels to Alien, all these films will ever be able to do, is to inspire one's imagination, and to disappoint whoever's left. I think Ridley's legacy is sound, because the character of David is an extremely well-written, vain, self-masturbatory challenge to those who fancy themselves as gods, and thus, better than those who might disagree. How dogmatic is that?

      read the short story 'at the mountains of madness' by HP Lovecraft.. you'll find a new appreciation of this movie. it was an incredible spin on that story.
      if you can get past those two silly moments (charlize running in a straight line, and the guy playing with the space cobra) and just realize that they were there to move the plot along, its a phenomenal movie.

    I'm sorry I have to say this: most of the people who say they didn't like Prometheus are the same people who say that Aliens (1986) is better than Alien (1979). Some people prefer sci-fi action over sci-fi horror which is what Ridley Scott perfected in the first Alien film. BTW: Just in case people don't know Cameron directed the sequel Aliens and made Ripley more of an action heroine blasting alien baddies and having a motherly instinct by bonding/rescuing Newt.
    This is my theory which I mean with the deepest sentiment for one of the most amazing technically driven and innovative director to ever work in the scifi genre. I don't get why some commenters say he is being arrogant when he seemed very humble and forthright with the interviewer; maybe it's me being a fangirl, I am not saying I like every film he's made but let me say this- Blade Runner (1982) was considered a flop when it came out, now it is known as one of the leading cinematic achievements in film, not just th scifi genre; in film history, period. I believe Prometheus will be the same mythic, cult immortality like what, ironically the character Peter Weyland hoped for and wanted.

      Agreed. Until Alien '79 came along, no one had seen anything like that, movies weren't made like that. Kubrick's 2001 gave us beauty, Alien spat in your eye, they're like two halves of the same coin. When Alien '79 aired in the cinemas, the audience reacted like never before, they scream and puked and cried and then came back for more! It's movie history.

    Prometheus may have been a commercial hit but for me it was rubbish.Acting ? LOL Still Ridley can make a fantastic movie like for example "Alien" and "Blade Runner".The theme music in "Blade Runner" was amazing in fact that's not a strong enough word.Actors where good and the lines they used "Fiery the angels fell deep thunder round their shores, burning with the fires of a hawk - or something like that" I like shit like that.The plot was great and that I think is partly what made that movie so great.The lighting in the Bradley Building and the fact it was dirty and decaying and all the little puppets.The photography was fantastic none of those stupid bloody hand held cameras. grrrr I hate that.Anyway please make another great movies - I've seen so many crappers its truly disappointing.

    The symbolism in Prometheus is not the real problem here, its the big Ideas that Prometheus is exploring, about creation and evolution thats the controversial ticket, thats whats really bugging the skeptics because it is beyond their own comprehension.

    Sir Ridley is more concerned and interested with/by Replicants/Androids than he is with humans, this doesn't sit well with some people. But for many of us it's exactly what we want him to be interested in. The way he's trying to tie the Alien universe in with the Blade Runner universe is absolutely fascinating to me personally.

    The problem is Ridley Scott came from a specific era in science fiction direction where thoughts and ideas took the back seat to visuals and style and actors\dialogue take a back seat to the larger scale of the world presented. This can 'work' when actors find a way to shine through all that, but it didn't in Prometheus. Compare Weavers performance in the worst Alien Film to Rapace's extremely wooden phoned in performance here. Prometheus was the Micheal Bay version of the Alien series.

    I got exactly the same feeling. Very disappointing. Was hoping he'd have some interesting explanations to give about some of the weirder plot elements in Prometheus, but after this I just assume that there's no hidden meaning, it's just stupid mistakes (things like: identifying an exoplanet by 'the unique configuration of five roughly chiselled dots in a cave' - that just makes no sense)

    Those that didn't like prometheus were never meant to become a fan of any Alien movie, you are accidental fans who liked Aliens the best because of the machine guns and wisecracks by the Marines only. Honestly you don't count because if you had half a brain you would like Prometheus, but it was too cerebral for you, too smart for you to like it. Ridley Scott didnt mean for you to see this movie. He is almost twice my age, yet he would appear to have twice my energy... I would love to know his secret? 🤔
    What I do find funny though, is that he essentially declares his own genius in most interviews, and who the hell could argue?
    I find that quite endearing, I wish more creatives did that... But first be sure if checked... we can back it up! 😊🏆🇬🇧

  • @RaikenXion
    @RaikenXion 11 років тому +1

    Yes, but it could also have been abit more complicated than that, what if the "cargo" was more of a amended version of their original "bioweapon" (the eggs). What if engineers themselves were not necessarily the creators of earth but more hastened life on earth and then what if they were really just evolved versions of us human beings that chose to leave earth if we are going on the whole Prometheus myth.

  • @RaikenXion
    @RaikenXion 11 років тому +1

    Well I never much favored Lindelof either, I think he did write a poor script and I admit I think it was a fairly bad move by Ridley to have used him, just because he was more well known from Lost. I wish they would have just gave the original writer John Spahits a chance and stuck to his script, only they could have just touched it up more.

    I think Scott's Alien is MILES ahead of Aliens. So just based on the history, I think Scott was better suited that Cameron to do this movie. And Prometheus is a stunningly made movie. The visuals are remarkable, as are the camera shots. Effects are incredibly well done. All in all, Ridley Scott did everything he could with this movie. The problems are in the script. I saw it the day it opened, and several times since, and I've always felt that the script felt like a rough draft.

    Great first episode, fantastic interview to kick things off - it's not like we'd get a face-to-face like this 'down in someone's basement', for example! I think the editor needs a word, mind; this doesn't have to be a nerd Charlie Rose. Hold off on the 'fade-to-blacks', trim the interviewees for efficiency (difficult to do that with RS, I know!) and pace, and try not to be so solemn. Tweaks here and there, this will be an essential watch.

    The thing is......is 'Prometheus' an actual reboot? I know Scott has said that only 1979's 'Alien' is compatible with it, but that derelict 'engineer/space jokey' ship had been there a LONG time and the alien eggs obviously predate 'Prometheus'. So the proto-xenomorph at the end of 'Prometheus' isn't the same genetically. Were we watching an entirely different timeline? Who knows (yet?)

  • @DaveM599
    @DaveM599 12 років тому

    Again, I'm not saying your're wrong in your interpretation,but I took the exact opposite interpretation from the 'security tapes'. I'm not saying I'm right either, because either interpretation could turn out to be 'right', or 'wrong', because we just don't have enough information to go on. There's a photo on UA-cam of the 3 deceased engineers in 'stasis' and each of their chambers has a ominous looking hole about chest height. I didn't notice this during the film.

  • @DaveM599
    @DaveM599 12 років тому

    I'll be blunt. 'Prometheus' in terms of it's script reminds me of the Red Letter Media Palpatine quote (in defense of the writing of the Star Wars prequels): "It is like a very deep game of chess, played by two people who don't know how to play chess!" Lots of people are coming up with the furthest out explanations, when there isn't enough information to go on and what information there is doesn't make consistent sense. Midichlorians!. It's hack writing and it won't come together in sequels.

  • @DaveM599
    @DaveM599 12 років тому

    The script is so vague that any alternative explanation (the engineers were infected by their own experiments, etc) can be valid. I don't mind having key issues left to the viewer. I do have a problem where basic character motivations, plot logic and essential information is withheld: that's just bad writing. Example: What is the point of being ambiguous about a character being an android or not, if that character is killed in a way that doesn't utilitise any of that: there's no point to it!

  • @terratrema
    @terratrema 12 років тому

    How does that tie in with Prometheus? David is a principal character in the movie, yes, but as with the others he exists purely to motivate the plot with random actions that are never followed up on, and perfunctory dire-logue; any exploration of his thoughts/desires/understanding as an artificial being is secondary to say the least.
    By the way, the thing that "doesn't sit well with people" is the utterly appalling script that "Sir Ridley" okayed when he should've demanded 6 months of rewrites.

  • @lordvader6128
    @lordvader6128 12 років тому

    I have more to add: There was a great ending in Alien and Aliens- it was climactic. How climactic was the ending of Prometheus? It was like Ridley was told in advance, "Okay, we have just enough money in the budget for one alien- make it count." And Guy Pearce's character- aren't we supposed to bond with the bad guy? He was so annoying and old. We needed a character like Hans in Diehard to fit into that role (so we care whether he lives or dies in the end).

  • @LinkHylia763
    @LinkHylia763 12 років тому

    Great science fiction story tellers are somewhat narcissistic, you have to be to defeat the wanna be's. Scott's explanation of the movies he has created are his view alone. We as the audience should only ask if there is another part; to plant the seed so to speak. The great science fiction, hell, great authors only give a glimpse of the concept. When finally ready to present the answers lead to more questions. Creativity is an organic process steeped in its own messy process, no pun intended.

  • @IbeJigsaw
    @IbeJigsaw 12 років тому

    How specific do you want me to get? This has been seen as true through Scott's entire career... this is nothing new. I'm not going to claim to be the one who "discovered" this. Scott even mentioned that his motivation to do A Good Year, American Gangster, and Body of Lies was to break away from how people thought of him as being style over substance. Funny, because these films further prove my point...as these attempts were generally ripped by critics and audiences.

  • @IbeJigsaw
    @IbeJigsaw 12 років тому

    Are you kidding? Let's see... blaring plot holes, zero character development, huge holes in those undeveloped characters, nonsensical plot. It's shit!

    Ridley Scott is awesome he's made most of the great films without Alien a lot of other films and games would have never been made he set the standards for future films and games I game wait the see the follow up to Prometheus It will be just as good if not better fantastic directer.

    For me, Prometheus wasn't godly-awful. It was just too fast-paced in the final hours and the portrayal of the characters were too simple, it's like they were there to be just a part of a scene and died. I hope that Ridley Scott and his team will improve these flaws in the sequel. Cheers.

    I consider his first question to be very unpolite and totally out of place: "what would you say were your best days of director? implying Ridley's best days of directing had already passed! I liked Ridley's answer: "What do you mean on this?... you have to do it everyday...

    the engineer are killing human because human changes their worship to jesus 2,000 years ago, the engineer felt betray and wants to kill human, so they left 2,000 years ago but have been stuck in that planet for 2,000 years, most of them die and one of them falls into coma shown in the movie.

    Those who actually enjoyed Prometheus are either "planted fans," or know nothing about script writing. While visually very appealing, the characters lacked substance, the characters lacked chemistry, the dialogue was terrible, AND WHO IN THE HELL GREEN-LIGHTED that damn squid?

  • @Greggah

    Dont you feel that Daniel the android was also starting to become a nuisance to the humans? He started to get his own emotions, and own ideas of things to do- thats scary to humans, we want to destroy such things. Mayby we are like a rebellious android to the engineers :D!

    man I'm glad @willbond said that - I can't believe so many people agree with @Capturemycard. I've never seen a movie with so many plotholes and unanswered questions to a mystery that was never resolved. specifically how did the movie change the way you look at the universe? @Capturemycard

    i used to have a lot of respect of this guy.... but he is too narcistic ... smelling a lot of arrogance! other directors who are in his league dont continuously praise themselves like he does especially after Prometheus! (good visuals, but the rest is utter crap)

  • @willbond

    He didn't explain why the script was so awful, the plotline so flawed, the character development so poor, and the decisions of the characters so laughably illogical. It was like they hired the best special effects people in the business and left the rest to a dysfunctional group of cokeheads.

    My point, it doesn't take a genius to watch Alien, Blade Runner, etc. and see that there are huge plot holes, horribly irrelevant characters, and rushed scripts - but much of this is forgiven, or at least forgotten, in favour of Scott's brilliant artistic eye.

    Maybe it was just the editor's decision to linger on Geoff Boucher's reaction shots too long, but doesn't Boucher come across like he's stuck on himself? When you tell Sir Ridley Scott, "It's good to see you again," like you go way back, then it starts to feel self-serving.

    I mean't to mention the superb Ain't it Cool as well in the comment. I would like to congratulate you for the launch of the channel I have really enjoyed it. could you mark the episodes as opposed to the extras maybe numbering them, my muddled brain has trouble telling them apart.

    Personally, no. I didn't think it was as interesting as Prometh. I've seen ST twice and that's probably about it for me. I'll probably see Prometh at least 3-4 times and have spent way longer reading about the film than I have ST.

    I'm sorry, I have no idea which review it was I saw that photo in, as I've watched so many. If I come across it again, I'll send you the link. The holes were quite apparent in the freeze frame (taken from above and towards one side of that set).

    ridley scott is pure genius , cannot wait for bladerunner (2) . prometheus ticks all the boxes ,outstanding. ridley took it where a story can evolve ,the old alien films had been taken too far in the wrong direction,but that is my own personel view.

    Scott said it himself - he's a glorified cameraman.
    Put him together with a good screenwriter and he'll deliver something decent, put him together with a hack like Lindelof and you get a mess like Prometheus

    Great director, but the probem most people have with prometheus is they think its a direct prequel to alien its not, there are links but its own story and personally i enjoyed it. looking forward to Paradise if he makes it

    cmon Mr.Scott, do a metroid movie already. Its perfect for you really, the whole series was inspired by Alien. All you have to do is recycle the assets from prometheus, and with a small budget its definitely possible.

    well to be honest, they deployed the scanners, they didn't actually have the map on them as far as I saw, it was on the ship. and secondly, I'm fairly certain that med pod was destined to be used by Weyland.

  • @IbeJigsaw

    For sure, many scripts are very contrived. Ridley's films are frequently incoherent, which is never a good thing... but again, his visuals are masterful. I would argue that he's an artist, not a storyteller.

    Because it IS part of the (Ridley canon atleast) alien franchise, but it is its own story. there are even lines in the movie that are said in the exact same way they are in alien/aliens.

    All Prometheus did was cash in on a good franchise and take advantage of the simple minds of most modern movie-goers. As long as it looks pretty most people will think it's a good movie.

    well, as far as the med pod goes, the general consensus is that it was meant for Weyland's use only. As for the other stuff you mentioned. *Shrugs* I dunno, future med stuff? lol

    Blade Runner was a critical and commercial flop when it first came out and is now regarded as one of the best.....if not the best....science fiction films ever made, now I say give Prometheus a few years if not a bit longer and it will be regarded for the exceptional piece of film making that it is and if people still don't like it.....well go back to your Michael Bay and Twishite movies and leave those of us with brains to enjoy Ridley Scott's films

    I love Ridley NO QUESTION! But what was all the flat out silly character moments/choices in this movie?! I mean the way the geologist one minute hes scared shitless, the next he's lost (even though they mapped the ship already) next they are stroking aliens..even a regular would not do that, how could they spend SO MUCH time on a movie and not address those problems with the characters that just goes on and on thru out the movie. I still loved it but not for that.

    I hope for the Prometheus sequel wen Shaw and David meet the elders, they actually discover the engineers hav kept groups of humans on thier homeworld. Maybe even more evolved human biengs to us, guess I dont really mean taller, but defo more physically fit, maybe even Immune to such man made deseases us humans r stuck with like cancer and such, gonna b interesting to see wot they do for the next movie.

  • @RaikenXion
    @RaikenXion 12 років тому

    Yes at first it kinda bugged me alittle cus I felt he was maybe acting alttile too "human" in some ways, but then I realized he is a android, and weyland did say they wud b able to mimick humans to near perfection. Hes basically very inquisitive, Id say hes proammed that way, Weyland classed him as his son, and he is very delusional, considering himself on equal footing with his maker more or less. Yes David was the most interesting character after the Engineers.
