Cultural Psychologists study the differences and similarities between cultures in order to understand more about the role of nature and nurture on our development. In this video, we talk specifically about cultural variations of attachment, and whether the country you are born in can itself affect how you bond with your primary care giver, and in turn all future relationships.

Yes!! We are NOT ALL THE SAME. We address life based on cultural experiences.

please caption your videos so I can use them in my classes. Without closed captioning we can't include them and share these great resources with our students.

Hey Acedthetest - I will make sure I add captions for future videos :) for existing videos, I've set them all so that community members can add captions in any language. If you've got any spare minutes, I'd really appreciate your support in improving the videos with captions

When referring to attachment styles please explain what they are rather than just using jargon. It would also be good at the end to give a summary of the findings. Thank you.

Hi Birdsong! Thanks for your comment and feedback. There's some further information about the different attachment types in this video I made about the Strange Situation: ua-cam.com/video/m_6rQk7jlrc/v-deo.html
      I hope this helps :)

Didn't Mary Ainsworth actually base the strange situation experiment design on her observations of mother-child interactions in eastern Africa? Also, in case it is culturally invalid to assess attachment styles through the strange situation, does that mean the constructs of said styles are invalid or does it mean we just need a different way to assess it? Thanks for the videos

Hi Augusto, that's interesting about the Eastern Africa background to Mary Ainsworth's research. In answer to the second point about whether the strange situation is valid/invalid - that depends on what your basic assumptions about humankind are. Because cross-cultural research shows that most children (anywhere in the world) are securely attached, it could be assumed that this is a universal norm (therefore perhaps attachment is something universal)... However it may be the case that the Strange Situation is causing children to behave in one way over another, thereby influencing the results. It's possible to argue that the strange situation and its attachment styles are valid and invalid! It depends which side of the argument you want to choose. Regardless - it's important to note that it's a hugely influential paradigm and has influenced a large body of subsequent work.
