Spot on...the Walmart brand you mention is Supertek. The number ya'll want is ST 3614 which is around $4 and bonus, mostly in stock. Can't find it? Walmart hides them on the bottom shelf hoping you'll buy the Fram version 3614. The ST 3614 diameter and length and thread match exactly to the 52-050-02 Kohler. You can peer in through the threaded hole in each for a comparison. Inside you will see the exact same metal grid pattern holding back the same pleated media type. (In case you're wondering I have another Kohler mower engine and have been running off brand filters in it for going on 17 years--mostly the tractor store off brands such as at Rural King. No problem.)
Whip, I think the comparison here is between a dedicated OPE filter (Kohler) and an automotive application filter, the Prime Guard. It's why the PG is a bit longer. As long as the longer automotive application fits always going to be less expensive than OPE. And, many will have silicone adbv too. So here, I'd buy on price. Thanks for vid.
I'd have to go with the Kohler, main reason being that its not made in China. I try to avoid Chi-Comm products if at all possible. That being said, i agree with you in that i think the the Kohler would filter better.
Yesterday, I watched a vid of them making fake Hyundai/Kia & Toyota filters in India. Completely manual production, no safety gear, child labor, random lengths of filter media, weird brown glue (didn't look like glue, more like clay), didn't crimp or glue the filter seam, spray painted with car paint. But they did use everyone's favorite coil springs. Labels were silk screened. They were actually leak checked, all with the same rubber gasket. Not the one the filter will get before packaging. Then I watched the genuine factory filters being made. Almost all automated. Crimped seams. Leaf springs. Powder coat finish. Silk screen label. Leak checked with the gasket that comes on the filter. But the fake filters looked almost identical to the real ones. Same boxes.

Purolator Tech Line TL10241 would be my choice for my Lexus LX470 with 294,000mi currently. Super cheap on Amazon $3.16ea if you buy 16 lol. Get to oil changing! And I would probably use it on my neighbors lawnmower if he wanted me to change it’s oil again
I could use the Kohler 52-050-02 Oil Filter on my 2008 Ford Focus. Same as the Prime Guard filter. I would use either or in a pinch. I think they would both filter fine. Thanks Whip.
I think they are okay to use, it certainly can't hurt. I just don't know if the particles caught by the magnet would have been caught by the filter media anyway.
I would just be glad if any lawn tractor had an oil filter ! Any filter will do just fine and i would put a small magnet on it also ! My bolens tractor with the briggs n straton intech lasted 10 years before exploding a rod destroying all the internals ! Not bad for a POS engine !
That's correct Right pick on Kohler! Ageed! Prime guard is is made by local companies that made supertech with the worse and polued materials in cheap emgine oil .High risk on engine contamination!
Could probably test the filter media buy using the burn 🔥 test ,cellulose usually just burns & smolders like paper & synthetic media burns ,& melts as well as bubbles up & burns black , synthetic blend will also burn black with the synthetic media burns & melts
I just found your channel and have now subscribed, I commented on your video comparing the 3 different Fram filters some of your subscribers may find the comments useful. Not to have you give away the farm or anything but do you have a personal favorite of the filters you've compared/inspected after their use? Thanks in advance!
Sense I change my oil and filter at the end of each season, I don't concern myself with saving a few bucks on an oil filter. I use the Kohler Pro yellow oil filter on my 07 Cub Cadet GT 2550 with a 22hp Kohler Command with just under 500 hours. I use 10w30 small engine oil. I have used different brand oil over the years, but they are always 4 cycle small engine oil made for air cooled engines. Never use automotive oil in any of my air-cooled engines. Air cooled engines run much hotter than liquid cooled engines and have special additives to deal with the higher heat and expansion. Many use automobile oil that is not formulated to deal with the conditions air cooled engines are exposed too. Like oil filters, I don't concern myself over a few bucks once a season. Even though I have several lawn cutting machines to deal with at the end of each season, I don't fret over saving a few bucks when it comes to oil and filters. I use what is made for the machine I am servicing. One Exmark branded twin, One liquid cooled Kawasaki twin, One Kawasaki XL twin, and one Kohler command twin, and two push lawnmowers with B&S engines. I use the recommended 10w40 simi synthetic oil in the Kawasaki XL engine and simi synthetic 10w30 for the rest of my machines. I very much enjoy watching the different types of oil filters companies produce. Thanks Whip City Wrencher, I think you are the best at cutting open and examining oil filters.
This is a hard size to find a cross reference in and the Kohler and Briggs and Stratton filers are very expensive. While the Chinese filters are much cheaper and ok filtration, I tried them and they always drained back oil past the ADBV when the engine was shut down. The next start, the oil filter would have to refill before oil pressure light went out. It sounds strange because looking at them, they seem ok but I tried 2 filters out of a case and it was the same story. That’s why I stick to the factory filters for my small engines.
@@ChrisPatrick-q6k Yes, but the other filter was a cheap brand. High quality automotive equivalent usually half price or even less where I am. I run a kohler commercially that takes this filter. That yellow paint job is very expensive. Some Kohler dealers try to claim it flows better than an automotive equivalent but I see no difference. The kohler used to have a different style of inlet holes so they've changed their design or likely supplier (probably to save money) in recent years. I've had to throw a lot of parts at this engine with less than 500 hundred hours on it and the cost of parts that shouldn't need to be replaced so soon to begin with is very high. Nothing lubrication related, coils, head gaskets, ignition switch etc Over 20 years in production they should be fully dialled in and bullet proof by now. Parts supply in Europe is a disgrace but that's another story.
30% more filter area with Prime Guard but less than 5% more weight of media. Telling by itself.
Yep,
Thanks for posting those numbers👍
Lawn tractors aren't fussy about filters, so a 3614 SuperTech from Wal-mart will work fine.
yep - been using them on my Craftsman lawn mower for years and works perfect. $3.97 vs $15.00 for Kohler. Supertech for the win!

@@davewissel4932 hard to beat the FRAM Ultra Synthetic
You can probably pick up a Purolator One (PL10241) at your local auto parts store or Tractor Supply Company for less than the Kohler.
The less expensive red L10241 also a great OPE option from TS.
I use the purolater red on my John Deere.

Totally agree. Beware of the Chinese made filter cuz I found commie tapping devices in them
Great Job Pete. Of the two I would pick the Kohler. I would rather cross this application to Wix at the end of the day
Thank You👍
The Wix would probably make for a good comparison.
That's the first time I seen a Kohler oil filter, thanks WhipCityWrencher

Kohler wins my vote.

They are pretty good at making fake auto parts as well.
OEM all the way. Thanks for another great break on a Friday!

I would use the Kohler as the media looks like it would filter better. And......both have coil springs.
Kohler for the win😅Good to see your video. Happy Friday.

any thoughts of a FilterMAG SS250 SS review?
I think they are okay to use, it certainly can't hurt. I just don't know if the particles caught by the magnet would have been caught by the filter media anyway.
Just buy a small super magnet and stick it on the can. Pull them off and reuse when you change the filter.

Walmart Supertek ST 3614 for $4.
If you are changing oil and filter every week I would buy the Walmart or STP, lawn service companies have to keep them in stock

My filter failed, opened at the seam.

Someone subscribed to this channel is like, "How do I modify this lawnmower to take a Boss oil filter?"
No modification is necessary, The Purolator Boss PBL10241 will fit.
Overspray definitely a problem, if it comes off and plugs the media, the bypass opens and thats not good.
Kohler filters are over priced even at big box stores.

Just get a fleetguard.
India vs China.....i probably look for a American made option
There's a fair number US made 3614 and equivalent filters.
Wix 51348,51348XP or Napa 1348 would be made in USA.
Kohler for better filtering media
Typical kohler, high price for nothing particularly special. Other good brands with same or better quality for lower price widely available.
Seemed the better of the two?
