Imagine going from this amazing 24 year date to finding out your significant other doesn't remember you the next time you see them.
it's not even remembering, he just doesn't know you and doesn't really care about you, it's DEFINITELY frustrating and sad
And now you know he is going to just because of the fun you and he are about to have. Stop being a downer, Shinji.
@@luisfillipebeserra2108I wouldn't say doesn't care doctor cares about everyone he meets he just didn't have the bond yet to have is all
Yeah its sad, but they had a life time together. Plus she has to go on for the sake of meeting the doctor in the first place.
I love how River not recognising the Doctor in this episode parallels this.
"The last time I saw you, the real you, the future you, you turned up on my doorstep... with a new haircut and a suit. You took me to Darillium to see the Singing Towers. What a night that was. The towers sang, and you cried. You wouldn't say why but I suppose you knew that it was my time. Time for me to come to the library. You even gave me your screwdriver. That should've been a clue." 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Em, it was lol.
Love it
The thing I noticed about that quote is that you think she is trying to spare 10’s feeling when she says “the real you, the future you I mean”, but she wasn’t. She corrected herself because 11 was “the real you” and 12 was “the future you”.
I love the story telling for her writen in a scrambled order yet always pieced together to make sense and is just wonderfully written.
This was the one time that their timelines were in synch. Both of them were at or near the end of their time together. Every other time they were at different points.
Oh my God when he's using it on her face at 1:44 he's scanning her brain so she can be uploaded to the library!
Bewan
Oh god, I didn't think of that.
OMG, same! i didn't even notice that that's what he was doing!
WHY DID YOU HAVE TO TWIST THE KNIFE THAT HAD ALREADY STABBED MY HEART
Bewan I HATE YOU!! WHY WOULD YOU TELL ME THAT!!! YOU JUST MADE THE PAIN SOOOO MUCH WORSE
Lol thx for that. So she gets out of the library? I've forgotten
I know everyone thinks that 11 was "River's Doctor" but in The Library, she said that she got the sonic from the Doctor, "her Doctor". She was referring to 12! And she spent a lot more time with him as a night is 24 years...
@@nomnommoon1001 Finally a Doctor Who episode I can get behind.
Plus their time together was actually linear, not front to back with each of them sometimes running into versions of the other that were too young to really know/love them.
@@StillJustDreaming she died when he first met her tho......and she usually knew where he was goin next then after a good man goes to war he knows more than her. That's pretty backwards to me lol.
@@sarah-jaynemcdonald2594 Right - but I'm guessing that when they were on Darrillium they weren't dealing with that anymore, that is was just the two of them being together.

This was when the sunset admired her back.
AHHHHH YOURE SO RIGHT
When I first saw River's sonic screwdriver and then the Singing Towers of Darillium, I thought "Finally, it is all coming together.".
Andrew Chapman I didn't notice until watching the episode a second time that the Doctor scanned her into it ready for Tennant to do his thing in the library. It was a nice touch.
So did the music ;)
As soon as I saw the sonic screwdriver I was hit hard in the feels.......
Thats strange. When i first saw it, my only though was "nononononononono"
@@darthmetallus3893 He gave it to her so his past self could save her, but only had it because he saved her
Only in DW
So the Doctor gives River the screwdriver... which he does because he remembers saving her by getting her saved data to the computer, an idea he got by seeing the screwdriver, given to her by him, which had already saved her data because he remembered that order to save her, he needs to save her data, so that he can save her one day by using her saved data, which he already did, because he realized he was clever, in saving her.
My question is.... who composed Beethoven's Fifth?
Mozart?
Who named Melody Pond "Melody"?
The doctor did of course watching the show proves he wasn't real
bootstrap paradox

1:34 - What I love about this moment is that the production team have clearly put effort into this prop. It would have been so quick and easy to just nab the original Future Sonic prop they used in the Library story and stick it in a box. But no, they either created a new one or cleaned up the original prop so it looks brand new. Not only is it nice that they bothered to do so, it hints that River has more adventures ahead for the sonic to get all battered up as we see it later. Brilliant!
Yes, maybe now she goes on some audio adventures in the River Song Diaries!
I also think the music when the sonic appears is from the library story, excellent details
Well, if nothing else, it’s sitting in that box for 24 years while they enjoy a night of Darillium ☺️
@@tasdon372 Aye it's literally the main "Silence in the Library" track! Such a cool detail
He also had the chip in the sonic and then scanned her to save her for his past self to”save her” so she can be saved in the library, very clever how the 12th scanned the 11th drs wife for the 10th to save her forever
Brilliant episode :) I like to think The Doctor subtlety scanned River for future reference in the library...
TARDISArchives I never noticed that until now, plus the music sounds like it's from that episode.
that was the idea he remembered she needed to be scaned so then he did it to help out his past self
Omg, really! :O
Wow I didn't think of that.
Glad I'm not the only one who noticed
I love how people thought that there was a plot hole in season 4 when River met David Tennant. There was no plot hole. Moffat knew that he needed to introduce her first, but because both lives are back to front she had to die in that episode. Her timeline is just completed in this episode. I think he knew from the start where he wanted this to go. It couldn't be Matt Smith who did this because that's the first doctor she met. It had to be the next one. Sometimes Moffat can be a genius.
her just finished off her story and tied up all of the loose ends
thehulk372 Yeah, he said in the DVD's audio commentary that he knew where it was heading. Not long after, he was announced as the next DW boss.
It also couldn't be Matt Smith, because River comments on how young The Doctor looks in Silence Of Library. Implying that The Doctor she knew looked older.
@@SGK1206 but she meant younger in years, which she could tell by his eyes rather than younger in looks.
He knew some of it, to be sure. But not all. Otherwise, Mels would have been part of the story earlier, instead of retconned into being for Let's Kill Hitler.
I just love how Peter Capaldi has on-screen chemistry with everyone. You can put him with a llama and we wouldn't even think it's weird bc he can blend in with everyone.
now i need a video of Peter with a llama
Underrated comment👊
@@like_miaow 💀
It just really shows Peter's skill as an actor
Thanks, now I want to go back in time and convince them to make a short of him losing an argument with a llama.
I missed it the first time, I thought the Doctor was playing around when he flashed her face with the screwdriver, but it hit me. He was scanning her so she could be saved to the library computer by the 10th Doctor. Oh, how clever!
Which bothers me, because it means that the 24 years she spent with 12 won't be in her memories.
Then again, it's perfectly possible he snuck one in the night before she left or something.
@@Althalus2010 she did remember. Watch FotD again and you'll see her reaction when CAL tells her what the Doctor did. 12 scan her brain to connect the screwdriver with her consciousness not her memories iygwim
@@Althalus2010 He didn't record her then and there, he just attuned the recording thingy in the screwdriver to her, so it would keep recording her all the way to the moment of her death.

I CRIED.
The luckiest woman in who univers i really envy her and then clara and amy and yeah rose
You know what I love about this the most? We KNOW that the screwdriver is to save River, but the way the doctor gives it to her is not done in the lazy way of “oh here I got you this. Hold on to it. Please.”
But rather in a legit endearing way, like a REAL Christmas gift~ because he really loved her~ ^_^ and yes we all pointed out he scanned her mind waves, but again done so playfully and endearing. I can bet a kings ransom that lots of whovian couples did this too~
Can't help but feel that this ending is beautiful. Sets up River's first (or technically, final) story perfectly. ^_^ (And the chemistry between this Doctor and River is just so lovely to watch.) :)
Hey u showed me how to dress like the doctor!!
River : "I don´t think you have given me a present before"
Me: But the blue book??
My memory: Ah, but he merely left it there by her bedside
And the she met David and died
Her body is dead, but her mind inside library.
actually her body and her mind are saved thats how the library saved biological beings it saved everything, her body however was used up for the data transfer so her mind is there her body would take slightly longer if at all.
well, one person is a lot easier to keep than 4000 you know. so i guess its possible her body could be created. but like. i doubt it. because the data transfer destroyed her body and only her consciousness had been saved in the screwdriver
That's not why River doesn't have her body. Her body died. They didn't just say "oh, you don't need that meat anymore so we'll just rip you out of it". And it's not really her mind. It's a copy of her mind. And you DO need a body. If ANYTHING happens to that planet, River's trapped there. If something messes with the computer code, she could be corrupted beyond repair. It's a lot easier to mess up software than it is to mess up a brain.
I know it may sound little stupid but theorytecily(sorry if bad speeled)speaking isnt example a way if another person died to
store his or her mind in library and then take a copy of Rivers mind and place it in that body i am sure that Cal would do that if the doctor ever wanted that
I love how this story stretched 3 Doctors, 2 show runners. Its probably the most complete plot thread in the modern show.
Back at the time of "Forest of the Dead", when she first spoke of this moment to Ten before she died, I've been picturing it for years in my mind. And gosh, this couldn't have been more perfect. The "older" Doctor of her story had always been a ghostly image, like a mysterious figure, but Capaldi's Doctor filled this gap gloriously. Anyway...
The thing that I love about River and The Doctor is just how much they get each other, especially River. I like the way the show it here with 12 and her, and her comment of “doctor you have no idea if I look amazing or not.... well, thanks for trying.” It’s simple and sweet and in no way mocking, she just knows that to The Doctor, looks are not what he sees. I always remember him and Clara and him not noticing her dressed up or wearing make up and while it proved funny, it showed that Clara didn’t know him on the same level that River does. She loves him regardless if anything, even him noticing her, which is brilliantly composed in the previous scenes before the crash. But he also loves her, in his own way maybe, but he does as shown by him trying to say that she looks amazing even if he doesn’t really know, or more importantly I think, doesn’t see any difference in her from when she’s dressed in pants and a jacket to a dress because to him she is always amazing. I just really love these two and will forever ship River and 12!
"You're a beautiful woman... probably."
She was more aware of his faults and the darker aspects of his nature than anyone else, she accepted and loved him as his whole complicated self
It's impossible to deny that despite any faults with the writing, River's storyline was something truly unique and wonderful for a sci-fi show. A relationship that goes in reverse, because duh, that's how it would work if you were a time traveler. So genius.
It's a shame that this wasn't Moffat's last episode. Much as I've enjoyed his run, this would've been a great bookend to it.
Hopefully Moffat makes series 10 a great end to his 7 year show-run. He isn't the best as a showrunner, so hopefully he gives us something great, at least.
In my opinion Moffat is a great writer, but not a great showruner. Maybe it why series 1-4 are the best
@@Ravushika01 maybe he's better than you give him credit for since series 11 was so bad
But then we wouldn't get the series 10 three parter (I mean the finale and the epilogue)
@@VioletLilikoi I think quite the opposite. I love the 12th doctor more than any other, and it's a whole lot due to Moffat's characterisation. I think series 6b and 7 were Moffat's only screw-ups.
David: oh~ oh~ oh~ I am VERY good!!!
Donna: what? What did you do??
David: SAVED HER!!!
This is a fantastic way to finish of her storyline!!!
it was finished before it began.
JAELABS now your just making me confused 😐
+LordCreep33 have you watched all the episodes?
keksi keks yeah but I've always found rivers timeline with the doctor confusing 😂
Just remember the Library of the Dead.
I'd like to see a mini series between Peter and Alex called "Those nights on Darillium" detailing what they did in those 24 years
would probably be on pornhub if you know what i mean
you and me both!
I contacted Big Finish audio and without Peter Capaldi onboard, the series won't happen. Maybe things will change over time.
Forget 11 and River, i ship 12 and River
No need to ship, they obviously see each other as more than friends and they got to spend 24 romantic years together :-)
Does it really matter which incarnation is it?
Lemos, river probably won't show up in the future doctor who because she died in the library. But I do wonder how it will be if she does meet the 13th doctor
John Liu maybe the next doctor will enter rivers timestream for a bit
11 and river are like a playful teen couple, 12 and river are like an old married couple. Its not fair to compare them. Both couples are perfect in their own way.
Personally I'm excited to see River hopefully flirt with 13. I mean she did say she had a wife before
the doctor and river is one of the most beautiful tragedies of our time
it breaks my heart to know that after this. she met her husband again but to him she was just a stranger. it's a beautiful and sad ending/beginning for river and the doctor.
I think it was her first meeting with ten (David). Where she has a line like "I didn't think it would cut sondeep.him looking right throughnmw" I know that isnt exactly what she said but
...the gist of it...
If you pay attention, everytime they refer to a previous event, they often relly it with the same theme song, here for example, when the doctor scans river to adjust the screw driver ( and the survival chipset inside ) to her they use the " biggest library "'s theme song. I will always love that show for that kind of details
They used all of the songs from capaldi's era in his last episode
there is so much in this scene well done moffatt, well done sir!
"funny thing is this means youve always know how I was going to die, all the time we have been together you knew I was coming here. the last time I saw you, the real you, the future you I mean..."
"you turned up on my doorstep with a new hair cut and a suit! you took me to berilium to see the singing towers ooh what a night that was. the towers sang and you cried you woulden't tell me why. But I suppose you knew it was time, my time, time to come to the libary. you even gave me your screwdriver! that should have been a clue" silence in the libary/ forest of the dead anyone?
Oh yes "spoilers"
Darth -Vader I actually felt my eyes watering. I didn't remember how out of place that speech was back then.
Now an awkward moment turns into the saddest moment in Dr Who.
This has got to be one of the most romantic and saddest moments I’ve ever seen. You can just see the sorrow on his face, and how desperately he wants to hide it and just enjoy.
Well, technically, Moffat was just continuing RTD's plot, but he did a damn good job of it.
@@Sky-bu1jj , really not.
Moffat wrote (or co-wrote) the library episodes. It was even explicitly stated that River Song was Moffat's OC.
@@KunjappuAbhijithR oh okay, I didn't know that XD thanks.
The doctor scaning River with the screwdriver.. yeah he is good. He is very good !
Also bootstrap paradox, google it.
No it's totally fine, I didn't want dry eyes at all today
Liam Catterson it’s just my eyes. They’re just a bit sweaty.
he scans her
Who the hell is disliking this scene???
This Doctor Who scene is so awesome! I actually forgot that this was only a two-minute clip.
Klobürste me, I hate it
The Burger King but why?
Why do you watch it if you don't like it The Burger King?
And this is why I always prefer Wendy's to Burger King.
I dislike the 0:27 akward moment😅
That camera pan when they're standing at the balcony is just something special. I get the strangest new feeling of seeing 2 people on another world, and yet in their own world - each one fantastic.
In spite of watching DW for years, I can't shake it every time I watch this scene. I chalk it up to some good VFX, Kingston & Capaldi's chemistry, and yet another Murray Gold gem.
The way he just subtly scanned her brain, knowing it'd be just enough time for it to process fully and his past self to save her. Absolutely love that lil detail
the description made me cry
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry" 😢
that silence in the library reference is real 😭
Sadness Overload
NYlife1022 how
I can't imagine what it must've been like for the Doctor all those years. Knowing the one person he had given his heart to in millennia was destined to die and he could not interfere with what was a fixed point in time. But it wasn't just because of the rules, but because she asked him not to before she sacrificed herself in the library. To honor his wife's final wish, he had to endure that knowledge during their entire courtship. It's the equivalent of a spouse or family member given a terminal diagnosis and the clock is always running against you. Not fair at all. Peter does a fantastic job and his emotional range in this scene. The whimsy and jovial nature gives way to sadness and regret when river is not looking.
I thought he would give her his own screwdriver. I assumed that screwdriver belonged to a future incarnation at the time 'Silence In The Library' was broadcast.
That's what Moffat probably intended at first.
Could be argued that River Song at the time thought it was his sonic screwdriver, and not one he created specifically for her. Especially given that sonic screwdriver had her data ghost saved in it which the Tenth Doctor then went and uploaded into CAL in order to 'save' River Song.
Smurphy 94 I liked his subtle scan of her to upload her data ghost.
That could have been what was originally supposed to happen, but since Twelve remembered being Ten, and knowing that she would need a Screwdriver, he decided to give one to her as a gift. He also made the design similar to Ten's, so that he would have a familiar format and know how to use it to save River.
I like to think that he retrieved the charred remains of nine/ten's screwdriver and repaired it.
Ahhhh, the sonic trowel. Nice to see some influence from her grandfather Brian. (Rory's Dad)
I love how neatly this tied up her timeline. You can even see that her new screwdriver is made from the remains of the 10th Doctor's screwdriver, meaning that, yes, in the Library she does have the same screwdriver as the 10th Doctor. Literally the same screwdriver. I assume the Doctor kept the remains after it broke in "The Eleventh Hour" and modified it later for River.
Capaldi played this entire scene brilliantly, you can see it in his eyes every time the doctor REALLY looks at her he KNOWS what's going to happen
What gets me is how he's slow to walk beside her, hesitating because he knows this is it.
Am I the only one who feels slightly dumb at the fact that I never put together how in Silence in the Library, when River says the Doctor came with a new haircut, she meant a new regeneration? I feel like that line couldn't have made sense if Matt Smith just had a different haircut for some reason, but until this episode, I never realized it meant a new regeneration.
A haircut = new looks and attitude
A suit = a "new" body
Everything about this scene was perfect. The acting, the script, the visuals and the music. Absolutely “everyone at the top of their game” stuff. Doctor Who at it’s finest.
I like this age Doctor + River better than 11. With 11, there was a Mrs. Robinson going on, but here, it just feels like they can have a more mature emotional level of connection here.
A sad episode indeed, when we first meet river she didn’t seem that important, but through the years of her popping up and getting to know her more it became heart breaking knowing this episode is the last we might see of her knowing she is of to the library and will sacrifice her self to save everyone.
River : “ it’s a sonic screw driver! How lovely!”
12th Doctor: “ When I saw the sonic Trowel I thought well, that’s just embarrassing...!”
I just love 12.
“Down, girl.” Lol.
The moment when everything finally makes sense from Silence in the Library.
I actually feel like I am watching a couple who has been together for many many years, and I love that so much
For those looking for love: Find yourself someone who looks at you the way the Doctor looks at River in the last part of this video. Capaldi nailed it.
When you realise that River Song spent time with the 12th and 11th Doctors before she met the 10th, now that is something
Damn, we need the rest! Even as a hardcore Whouffaldi shipper, I agree that this scene is pure magic. It has so much history behind it.
This was his goodbye to her. And it probably hurt him more than anything in the world
'I don't think you've ever given me a present before'
And what about you diary ?
Probably she doesn't know it was a gift from the Doctor and not from Amy and Rory?
@@chanterelle483 she knows, but it wasn't really a gift. He gave it to her to match timeline. She thought the screwdriver was a proper gift for her to use.
First time I saw this I was like YES FINALLY, IT TOOK 8 YEARS FOR THIS TO HAPPEN!
The music of the singing towers is absolutely perfect for the moment. It's not overly dramatic or epic, it's calm, reflective, and even a little sad. Because those who watched all the way from Forest of the Dead to The Husbands of River Song know that this is the end of River's Tale. The moment she and the Doctor were always running towards. And now, after all this time, after everything they've gone through, the destruction of the universe, the near death of the Doctor and a thousand other adventures...here they are. The Doctor and his wife. The end of the story.
OH MY GOD THATS SO AWESOME HE JUST SCANNED HER BRAIN READY TO BE UPLOADED BY TEN! I LOVE DOCTOR WHO!
This was the first time they remembered everything about each other...
This is a reminder of love being for the sake of love. Clara revered the doctor and was somewhat infatuated with 11, but upon his change she saw what the doctor really was, not bound by her laws. River upon every arrival never batted an eye at the doctors incarnation. She treated him with an initial indifference, poking him to reveal his exciting and sometimes mischievous nature, almost getting past each face and cutting past the ego he could upkeep with companions, and saw that through each change. Amy would have struggled with twelve, maybe ten, maybe nine, rose would have struggled with eleven and definitely 12. River didn’t care, she saw it was the same man. Those are the kind of people you want in your life. Change or a motivation, people who want to be there, with you.
The doctor hates goodbyes, but he faces it and makes is special for River ❤
He always goes all out for River
Well, thanks for the thought. Knowing this is THE last time we'll see River before The Library
James Faraci well we might see her again but her early life from this.
We can't. It's in "Husbands" where she finds out that the Doctor has more than thirteen faces, so at the very least he can never tell her who he is, because then she would know before this episode, making a pretty big paradox.
James Faraci but we see a post Library River in the Name of the Doctor
Remember, she has 20+ years to spend here before she actually goes to the library. Plenty of time for mischief.
just realized after watching back season 4, that bit in 01:44 where the doctor is just playing around with the screwdriver, shining it to her face
it might be him saving her mind in the data core,
truly the detail is amazing
I was already on my way with "Hell Bent," but this is the episode that truly made me fall in love with Capaldi's Doctor, right alongside River.
"Twenty-four years." 😭
I will always love River Song, she’s one of my favorite characters of all time

I know this was the only episode they had together, but 11 doesn't quite feel like her doctor after this.
Love that the music, when you see the Sonic from "Silence in the Library", is also the same as that episode. Just beautiful.
I love the way he's giddy when pulling out the screwdriver! It's things that he does like that, which make him my favorite Doctor.
12 is husband goals
Much as I like 11, I think she had better chemistry with 12
the fact they remebered to do that was amazing

Kyle Netherwood You just had to ruin the mood didn't you XD
Tulf42 I apologise
Kyle Netherwood It's cool. But when I give someone a Sonic Screwdriver and take them to see the Singing Towers, she should know, I'm trying hard as a nerd to impress them XD
Kyle Netherwood And you should avoid visiting any libraries in space
Or you're about to die.
I wonder what Clara would say about the Doctor using the Tardis to take care of a restaurant reservation? Especially considering he was chastising her for using it to undo missing her own reservations, among other things.
I love how he scanned her to save her in The Library
Darillium music is so beautiful, I think it sums up twelve so well. But also it sums up the Doctor and River as a whole!!
Now I understand that when River told to the 10th doctor about the future by saying "my doctor". She wasn't referring to Matt Smith but to Capaldi. Because they had a longer time together I think
That moment when you realize the doctor was scanning River's brain for the library.
Urgh, this always hit me so hard. This really is The End for River's storyline... ;~;
Camille Amai
Unless plot convenience calls for it not to be?
One can only hope.
Yes, please. I LOVE River.
Camille Amai they can allway use river as ghost. as they did for, The impossibel girl episode. many Times they want.😉
1:43 it gets better when you discover that the Twelfth Doctor was scanning River into the hidden neural relay on the sonic screwdriver, so Tenth Doctor could save her using CAL...
The scenery is just divine. The look in her eyes speak louder than any words could ever.
After the intensity and tragedy of "Heaven Sent" and "Hell Bent", it didn't hurt to have Peter Capaldi and Alex Kingston have fun in this holiday show. Alex was leaving the show to come over here (we keep stealing Doctors and Companions to cross the pond. Sorry.) and she's given a fine sendoff. Never hurts to have your own Sonic, either.
Apparently, she is trying to persuade Peter to join her on 'Big Finish'.
Such a beautiful scene. Nearly drove me to tears. :(
I love how the past doctor was so clever. he knew his future self wouldn't give up. so 12 put this all together to save her. this was the best bootstrap paradox ever. because you never figure out how he first got the idea. he got it from his future self.
While they tried to hide that Capaldi was injured, it’s clear in that wide shot of him walking toward River that he’s limping.

That's what I've been asking.
The music used in this episode. As far as i'm aware Murray Gold hasn't released it yet.
Some of it is from "Silence in the Library" and "Forest of the Dead". Go back and have a listen.
For additional fun, you know the moment where Dr. Moon tells Cal that her nightmares are real? You hear the first strains of what becomes "I Am The Doctor" (Eleven's theme).
It's on the Series 4 soundtrack...Titled Silence in the Library
He cares about her so much that he remembered through 2 regenerations just so that the love of his life could live.even if he would never see her again
I just realized he scanned her brain. He wasn't actually being a little kid showing it off, this is where he saved her.
You missed the best bit not only did he take her to the nicest restaurant in the galaxy he commissioned and funded it after the ship crashed
When the “silence in the library” theme came on just for a few seconds, that took me back. They just don’t create doctor who like they did back then. Chibnall you won’t be missed, welcome home RTD! do something… fantastic!
I just realised, the Doctor playfully demonstrating the sonic works, was actually him _scanning_ River, so that the screwdriver could store her image in its memory core, to be later uploaded into the Library's computer!
This concluded a 7 year story arc. Just awesome.
Props to them for remembering exactly what the screwdriver River had from the library episode looked like.
I feel like they saved the prop for this exact moment
so that's how and when she got her Sonic screwdriver... and now sometime in her future she goes back to the past and meets 10th doctor in a library 😆
