I was privileged to see him once with ELP back in the ‘70’s. His elegance and command of the stage and the the stadium has remained with me to this day. RIP Greg Lake. Thank you.
Imagine a musician with a great voice, actually playing an instrument and really singing. No Auto-Tune. No lip-syncing. No recorded backing tracks. REAL music. Awesome beautiful music. What a concept.
It has always been that way...for real musicians. But in many cases, today's music industry no longer has a need for musicians. "Music" is created with beat tracks and sampled sounds. Singing is processed through Auto-Tune so a good voice is not needed. And live "concerts" for almost all "pop stars" are essentially dance performances with "singers" lip-syncing to backing tracks. I few years ago, I used to say that if you were watching more dancers on the stage than musicians, then you are not attending a "concert." Now, you don't even see musicians on the stage in the first place. The backing tracks are more than enough for the dancers at the "concert."
He penned this at 12? Who thinks with such depth at that age? Just a stunning song and an effortless voice that will live forever. So glad I grew up in this era.
Which begs the question: why didn't Greg offer this for the 'In The Court Of The Crimson King' album? It would have fitted in between Moonchild and the title track instead of the plips, plops, silences and general nothingness of 'The Dream' and 'The Illusion'. Musically and lyrically it fits the gothic theme. For me it would have made an epic album, well, perfect. We shall never know why it took ELP to develop this song, and not King Crimson But that's life love and the universe...…...
@@SuperNevile he didnt offer it with king crimson because he didnt think it was worthy. He only offered it to elp when they needed an extra track and they were out of ideas. He told them he had a song he wrote when he was 12 and keith was like "yeah that kinda sucks" but Lake and Palmer went and recorded it and emerson was amazed by how it turned out, then he did his solo
@@SchizoidBastard OK, Thanks. It is interesting that KC needed to fill 7 to 9 minutes and chose to fill it with something so deconstructed that it was a definite “stylus lifting” event, especially as a great song that only needed to be developed correctly (as with ELP) was available.
Greg has one of those rare voices that can send chills up and down your spine. Magnificent, and sometimes unappreciated when conversations of "great rock vocalists" come up. Greg Lake belongs in that discussion.
And this was the beautiful music I grew up to! It's March 26th 2024! They don't create masterpieces like this anymore! I sure hope the younger generation will be able to listen to this beautiful music! And enjoy it as much as I do.❤❤❤
Yes. Emerson was my fifth favorite musician. The ironic thing is that heaven has no electricity so Keith and Greg can always jam together but most rock garage band players will be disappointed..lol
The last almost 40 years I've been listening to ELP Now the last 2 lines of this song bother me, it is almost prophetic, although at the time of the conception of this song, There was no way he could have had any idea, what his life, or the end of it would be. No money could save him, so he layed down and he died. So very sad. Does anyone know what kind of cancer he had? Not that it really matters now. I'm just nosy.
Kandi G. .. hi you fun.. sorry I might have missed your big thing but yes..... people thought I was good because I covered emerson hi... emerson was the thire3d best musician of all time to me hi hi getting drunk hi
yeah, I was about to mention that but you beat me to it. the keyboard soloing at the end of this by our beloved Keith Emerson was the frosting on the cake for this fantastic tune. Lake had a very unique vocal ability that I cant compare to anybody else. a multi instrumentalist (guitar and bass) and a compulsive gum chewing badass "He Was"...lol! Keith Emerson and Greg Lake....Immortals until the end of this world.
What a lucky girl I was I meet him at age 20, watch their 1977 St Louis concert from the STAGE and go to dinner after with ELP & several of my flight attendant roommates. It remains a fav memory of my career. He shined SO brightly. Shine on Greg Lake ❤️ off in his next grand adventure 🙏
Yes ladies and gentlemen, this is what real songwriting and performing is not like today’s electronic crap youngsters listen to today. Hopefully those youngsters accidentally click on this video to see what they’re missing out on
Every time I watch this it brings tears to my eyes. What a fabulous artist, singer, guitar player, and writer! This concert was so long ago, and it reminds me of our own mortality. There is no turning back the clock. Thank God for memories.
Man do we need a shot of talent like this today. Emerson Lake and Palmer were so full of greatness and its reflected in their music. Sure am glad to have experienced it.
I really think this is over this generation of people heads. It was a much simpler time when this group was very popular. I saw them in concert several times, and they were terrific.
I just LOVE his nod to the audience at :20. What an awesome talent in every way. Throughout his whole lifetime, I’ve always thought of him as one of the most handsome men I’ve ever seen. Rest well Greg Lake & thank you for giving yourself to us all. You live on in the hearts of many.
I missed his nod and subsequent smile. I am glad that you pointed it out. I regretfully didn’t appreciate ELP in the early 70’s as I was a huge Yes fan. It meant not discovering Greg Lake until now. I plan to buy his autobiography. He seems to have been as beautiful inside as out. He was a devoted husband and father while having a stressful career. That counts for a lot to me.
When I saw ELP in 1978 they opened with this giant fan of light covering the stage. Then Greg Lake stepped through the light and played this song. The entire concert was incredible. They went for so long they had an intermission. It was just great.
A true lucky man. He not only had the gift of beautiful songwriting, but he was a true professional musician with one of the most unique voices in popular music
I was in a dive with friends & dancing, the dj played Lucky Man by Greg Lake & I was listening so contently I didn't want the song to end, lost in its lyrics & haunting music. So sad & meaningful I never forgot what it meant to me. It was a slow dance with a man I have since forgotten. I will never forget Greg Lake. Even before ELP he was so talented. I think I fell in love with him that night in that dive. 😍 Greg was so cute & such an angelic voice.
All I can say is that his wife was a lucky woman, Greg Lake at this time in his life was a complete stone fox!!! And so damn talented with that beautiful silver voice! And able to write and produce songs too. We were lucky he and Emerson and Palmer came together like they did and gave us all this beautiful music. Rest in Peace Greg! Forever in my heart.
Amazing, Greg wrote this when he was 12 but didn't like the song. They needed to fill up more time on an album and used this song. Glad they chose to put it on their self titled album.
>> but didn't like the song He did like it :) The problem was is that this song was just childish and forgotten til the moment of 1970, when they needed one more song to add to the debut album. Then, they re-arranged it, and it became a tradition to have 1 song like that in the album. That's, at least, what Lake says in his autobiography, which surprisingly named "Lucky Man" :)
We got to see E.L.P. in Chicago in the early 70s. They had orchestra backing this magnificent band up. Can you imagine the sounds we heard, those were the concerts that just blew everyone away, nobody sang with the band, everyone was in Awe.

One of the best British singers and songwriters ever. Lucky man is a pearl and maybe their most popular tune But all Greg Lake's solo songs are kind of masterpieces. ELP were very clever in alternating new sounds to traditional ballads like Lucky Man. Eclectic and genial, all the three of them

The most under rated voice in rock.
Greg Lake has to be one of the most overlooked songwriters of all-time.
Besides his amazing talent, Greg was a gorgeous man. And I'm a straight male. But I know how to appreciate beauty, and he had it.

He also chewed gum while singing! I sing, it's almost impossible to do
He was pretty good at chewing gum and singing too, which is not easy to do!

A guitar, a voice and a mesmerizing performance in front of 250,000 people.
Incredible! That's what live music is about. The 70s was the best decade of music ever.

I saw then in 72 or so, and you are right. No one today would be able to believe that musicians could have been so good.
