Hi Rob. Just bought you lunch :-) I'm thoroughly enjoying your series on PL6, and of course all the MFT wisdom you've shared. Tutorials like these are gold dust for those of us trying to figure out DXO's philosophy as we go along.
Ctrl + RightClick ... thank you very much for this hint. You're the perfect teacher for this amazing tool, hopefully the DXO team does sponsor your efforts.
Thanks. No, DxO is not sponsoring my videos directly. They did give me an upgrade from my version 5 last year. I would have upgraded anyway, but I appreciate them giving me that. I made this video because a viewer emailed me and asked if I could explain the hsl.
Great content Rob, seems to be a real lack of PL6 tuts online for some reason? Would love to see more content, especially around local adjustments, masking & maybe some start to finishing editing of a single photo giving your thoughts on which tools you use for what and why please
I too am surprised DxO doesn't make more editing tutorials. UA-cam seems to be full of "Launch" videos, but rarely is there follow-up. I plan on doing more tutorials when time permits. Stay tuned!
Thanks for taking the time to do these, i use DXO for everything, but it never has the amount of guides and tips that Lightroom does, which feels like everyone sometimes! Much appreciated 👍
Thanks Rob! Get me coffee when we meet. By the way, it seems to me that in the latest version of DXO, the eyedropper is not active when selecting the white color of the HSL tool. Yes? Maybe you have a video explaining how the tool works Chanel Mixer and examples of use? So far I have only been able to use it to lighten and darken the selected color. I don't understand where this could be useful? Moreover, you can work with color brightness in the tool HSL. I'm sure I don't understand something.
Hi. My eyedropper works on the white color, so not sure why yours would not. The channel mixer is part of the Filmpack which I have not covered. I may do so in another video soon. The Channel Mixer works best for b&w images. So when you select b&w under Color Rendering, you can still make adjustments to the images where as the HSL tool is disabled. When working in color, the HSL tool brightness slider is very subtle. It's meant to fine tune luminance of individual colors. If you want more substantial changes, using the control points and limiting the chroma mask is a better solution. Hope that helps. -Rob
I have used Nik / DXO products before Google bought them, and followed them to DXO. However your clear and understandable tutorials really make a difference. Thank you Rob, for helping me be able to use the tools to their full effect.
Thank you. Can you use the eye dropper to pick a colour off the image, and then apply that colour to elsewhere in the image? For example if the blue in a photo of a painting isn't correct in one area because of light reflecting from the surroundings,, can you pick the correct blue from elsewhere in the photo, and apply it to the problem area? Many thanks.
So long as your camera is supported in PL4, I would wait until Oct/Nov when holiday type sales come in. They might also release Photolab 7. There are some improvements in PL6 that you might consider, particularly the Cloning/Repair tool and DeepPrime XD. Still, I think it's better to wait.
Hi Rob - thanks for all the videos. I like the program a lot, particularly since I am new to editing and all the sliders have pop-up help next to them. However, the one issue I have noticed is that the program seems very ineffective at correcting chromatic aberration. I pretty much see no change no matter how much correction I apply. Do you experience this?
I don't have a problem with purple, but I have trouble with greens and blues. For purple, be sure to check the box for purple fringing and also push both sliders to their max.
@@RobTrek Thanks. I have done that to no avail. Not sure why it does not respond. Overall, I do like the program and hope DXO keeps improving it (automatic subject detection would be nice). Thanks for getting back to me and please keep the content coming.
The effect of the luminance slider on the color wheel is very subtle, so I said "Just a tad". Poor choice of words given I pushed the slider almost all the way. I didn't do anything else that would affect the impact of that slider.
great series on photolab6 - getting used to using it so these totorials are great. one thing I am missing is a vignetting tool to darken corners - I appreciate PL6 has a vignetting tool but that seems more for removing a vignette than adding one. is there a simple way to do it.
I really enjoy your videos Rob and I'm seriously considering buying DXO Photolab 6. I currently use Olympus Workspace and I'm curious would DXO work with this or should I just utilize DXO as a standalone? Cheers.
Hi Rob. Thanks for another very informative tutorial. I have a question: I run PL6 on a Mac and I would like to compare the before and after photos side by side as you do here but I cannot find how to do it anywhere. I can only do the slider showing the changes done left to right . I did search the manual but couldn't find the answer. Is this a limitation on the Mac ? I know the PC implementation is different...
I don't get the slider when looking at before/after for final edit. I do get the slider for before/after when looking at adjustments, but not the side by side. I think DxO just needs to tidy up the interface between the two OS. It should be more consistent.
Wonderful. That's such a powerful tool. DXO's just released 6.3, but, for the life of me, I don't really understand all the hubbub around color gamut. Is this really such a big deal or is it just mainly marketing?
It looks like it should be useful where colours are near saturation. The one area I've struggled with in DXO is in approaching OM Workspace's colour rendering. Since I happily discovered Colorfidelity DCP profiles, I apply them every time before editing. With the wide gamut, it feels like going back to the drawing board.
Hi Rob, do you know any way to apply colour changes in just a selected area? For exemple : rework the colours of a bird without changing anything else .Thanks
If the color of the bird is too similar to other colors in the image, you'd have to use the auto mask brush in the local adjustments to select the bird, then in the equalizer for that mask, adjust the Hue slider. Not as intuitive as the color wheel, but it can be done.
Thank you for all the great videos Rob !!!
Great tutorial to show the possibilities of the HSL tool. Thank you Rob!

You did a great job explaining this. Thanks!

Great info!! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you. Can I use this method to fix the purple fringing?
Technically, ff there is no other purple in the image, then yes. But photolab has a chromatic aberration tool that should correct most of it.

Sorry, I don't see a way to do that. You'd have to use control points and change the colors by eye.
Hi Rob, hope you are well. Do you think it's worth upgrade from photolab 4 to 6? Thanks for all your hard work.

Rob, have you done a tutorial that includes the ReTouch tool? TIA.
No, but I can make one maybe tomorrow. Thanks for the idea.
1:41 You said you ant to bring the luminescence down a tad. But you brought it down 94/100 on the slider. Is there something else you did as well?

Also scratching my head. Seems like it may actually be a powerful tool, but it remains mysterious and unused for me.

@@gilleslast3561 It would be nice if we could set the mask and use all the tools and not just the select few in the equalizer.
