    Dear Rob: you are the absolute best! Thank you so much. You clarify how things work. I’ve been through a few DXO tutorials and they hypnotize me with unnecessary details while you get straight to the point and demonstrate how it works better than anyone else.

    Hi Rob, I love your videos and this one is no exception. I just wanted to point out that adding Deep Prime XD is possibly best done as the last part of your edit. Often I find that when its turned on that adding other edits can sometimes result in delays in the preview updating, this may just be me (I am running DXO on an M1 Macbook) but thought it might be helpful for anyone else noticing similar buffering when making changes. Thanks again Rob!

      "Deep Prime XD is possibly best done as the last part of your edit" ... OR first and roundtrip to DxO PL from DxO PL :-) ... what is better is debatable

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  Рік тому

      Thanks for the tip. I've not had issues with applying DP first on my Windows laptop. However, I do see a slight performance hit, so I should have thought about others with slower machines. PL is not 100% M1 compliant yet, so maybe that's a factor. Either way, doing DP last or as a round trip makes more sense.

    Very good as ever, Rob, and an interesting and rational explanation of your workflow. Well paced and easy to folow along for newbies to PL6 and also those of us who've been working with the program for a while.
    With the new versions of Nik Collection 6, I wonder if this might be a good time to look at some of the creative possibilities for working with PL6 and elements of the Nik suite (e.g. Viveza, Colour Efex and Silver Efex)?

      @@RobTrek That's great to hear. The Nik Collection guys have a good overview of the new stuff at ua-cam.com/video/-dZ2zDYggOE/v-deo.html (be aware that they are French and have strong accents, but worth persevering with). It looks as though DXO are bringing the local adjustments more closely into alignment between the two products as well as harmonising the interfaces for the different elements in the collection as well.

    Hi Rob, your tutorial is great and I'll get the software soon. However I also watched your Birds in Flight tutorials and currently that is my main interest. Did you use Photolab 6 there, or something else? I was fascinated how you extracted such detail from a relatively small bird image ( a bit like my early images).your tutorial show lots of selections being done and the detail discovered was phenomenal/awesome - just what I need ! Do you have a bird editing tutorial from which I can learn the techniques ? Worth a lot of coffees !!

    thank you, Sir!
    if possible, could you please explain the new soft proof option?

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  Рік тому

      Basically, it displays the image in the color space for the final destination of the image. So if you are editing to post on the internet, you want to set the soft proof to sRGB. If you're going to display on an HDR TV, you would set it to Rec 2020 or DCI P3. If you are going to print, you would set it to a specific ICC profile for the printer/paper combination. You would then use the gamut warning indicators to see if you're creating colors that can't be displayed or reproduced on the destination. I did a whole video on DxO color here: ua-cam.com/video/iZ_G-H0lyVs/v-deo.html

    Thank you, such a wonderful playlist. I have learnt a lot. I was just wondering wether you were using dxo clearview plus in other kind of images, the ones without haze and fog ! Is it an interesting tool or the corrections are too artificials ? How can it be combined with other individual tools such as contrast or color adjustments ? Thank you so much.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  10 місяців тому +1

      It's very good for bringing out details in clouds. Using it do reduce haze and fog works well, but I prefer a more natural look for depth. I also use it sometimes to give any image a little more "pop".

    • @RobTrek

      It depends. I may do it as a local adjustment during the process. However, I usually do the clearview last if applying globally.

    Hello Rob, in your opinion , Dxo Photolab is the best option to OM Workspace? Thanks

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  11 місяців тому

      It's my preferred photo editor. There are some gaps in features vs. other editors. But most of these can be supplemented with free software to a degree. Things like HDR, Panorama, and focus stacking. The key advantage to Photolab in my opinion is the final output of an edited image. I think it's the best, including the noise reduction in Photolab ELITE.

    Do images need to be optically corrected and if so does that mean that our cameras & lens are incapable of producing acceptable images? Also, is it possible to change the various settings of the DXO optical correction preset? Thanks, Rob!

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  Рік тому +1

      The short answer is yes. Optical correction fixes distortion, chromatic aberrations, and other defects in lens design. The degree of correction will depend on the lens. Distortion, in particular, can be very obvious and ruin a photo. It's more prominent in wide angle lenses and zooms. In the video, I used an optical correction preset which adjusts several settings at once. You can manually change these individual settings in the side panel tools. Look for Vignetting, Lens Sharpness, Chromatic Aberrations, and Distortions.

  • @ftrifiro

    You didn't mentionned either the dxo smart lighting ? Is it a useful tool or too "artificial" and better adjust cursors individually ? Thanks a lot and congratulations for such a good job. Ready for a coffee :)

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  10 місяців тому +1

      It's best to do both. Apply a "low" smart lighting and then adjust tones.

    OK I’ll try to be civil. But here’s my take on DXO PhotoLab6. I’m an avocational photographer, more than a hobbyist, less than life’s work “artist”. Something I totally enjoy doing.
    So I have several editors, my main one has been Luminar Neo.
    So, I see the tutorials and the results many get on PL6 and try it all the time with frustration. I guess I’m not the sharpest crayon in the box, but I find PL6 loaded with great gadgets that I just can’t consistently find or make work for me. IMHO the layout is a mess and seems inconsistent from use to use. I end giving up in frustration and going back to my tried and true Neo, where the workflow is consistent and so easy to use, especially from one time to another. Maybe not as many bells and whistles and fine results ( for some ) as PL6 but the gadgets I need are right there, readily accessible and get my pictures in the ballpark.
    Trying to luv PhotoLab6 but find she’s a harsh mistress!

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  10 місяців тому +1

      I totally understand where you are coming from. The workflow between Neo and PL6 is totally different. I was given a copy of Neo months ago and I still struggle with it. If I don't try too hard, I can easily navigate Neo and get great results very quickly. Where I get lost is when I want to use it like I have every other photo editor. Neo seems like it's not trying to be a competitor with other editors, but rather takes on a whole new approach to photo editing. I applaud them for it and eventually I'll be able to wrap my brain around it. But for now, I'm in the same place you are as with PL6.

    • @BeeMichael
      @BeeMichael 10 місяців тому

      @@RobTrekthanx for your response. I wasn’t trying to make a case for Neo, but what I really want is to get PL6 to work for me on an intuitive level. I always feel like a beginner typist using the hunt and peck approach. This tutorial is nice on using features, but what I think is needed is to go back one step and present a comprehensive tutorial on just negotiating the menus and where to find features on a day to day level.

      @@RobTrek Thanks for list - will have to check into that...
      The "glitch" was very bizarre and I have never experienced anything like that before...
      I have been a DxO user since version 6...but at that time, DxO Optics Pro had some "catastrophic" problems, that they were way too slow in acknowledging, let alone doing anything about...that took several "upgrades"....so I didn't upgrade until version 9, which did include very good noise reduction...and that has gotten better since, of course...
