Nice overview Jim! I'm looking forward to getting my copy. Glad to see that they finally listened and improved the catalog! Now if they'll just enable mask repositioning and layer flattening...
Wow! Very excellent time to play and adjust pictures ahead! Since long time I'm asking for the stars rating, I mist that classification of my photos since I left the Lightroom now it is there! Youppi! For me the first 10 minutes of your excellent exposé it is the most interesting, the classifications. Well Jim, thanks for that excellent information on this great change for Luminar NEO for October, 2024.
When Luminar first came out it was like a novelty item with a few useful AI tools. But they have gradually improved it until it's now a viable option as a one-stop-shop. Some of the AI tools are a bit icky still and hopefully that will improve, but the foundation tools like the catalog and basic edits are now fit for purpose IMHO. The last two upgrades have been massive and the only thing on my wish-list now is to be able to merge layers without doing an export.
Thanks Alan and I agree it has come a long way with constant improvements, and also agree about the last two updates being pretty impressive. I have asked a lot about layers getting improved and am hopeful we get them at some point. We will see. Thanks!
"Thanks, Jim-I really enjoy your videos. I’m hoping your connection with the Skylum team might encourage them to release an update for the latest version soon. It's been crashing frequently, even with basic tasks like moving images, applying filters, or using GenErase. I never experienced these issues before, and my computer is more than capable of handling demanding applications. I like all the new features but would have prefered to stay on the previous version, at least it worked. Thanks again!"
Oh gosh sorry to hear that it isn't performing for you. Please file a ticket with their support team as this is the best way to get assistance. Thanks.
Hopefully they also add a way to create and save custom crops. Often I have to edit images with a range of particular non-standard crop ratios and at the moment I have to re-enter them each time into the single 'custom' slot.
@@JimNix Useful if you have to crop the same image for different web graphics or for different print projects. Now we can make a virtual copy too, and restyle and re-crop, however having the ability to save a bunch of custom re-usable crop sizes is a big time saver. Usually I have to go to ON1 to do this for now.
Great video. You are still the best teacher for Luminar (and other things). I know you use other programs. Do you keep all of your photos in the Luminar catalogue? I worry about the companies stability. I go back to Mcphun and early Skyrim products. I don't mind using it for editing, but worry about having my catalogue there. I have always kept my pictures in Apple Photos and send a photo over for editing.
Hi Sharon and thanks for the kind words. I use the Luminar catalog but only for a small subset of images. I use Lightroom for my full catalog. Skylum is very stable though so no worries there. They continue to invest in and innovate with the product, which is awesome. It certainly gets better and better. If you already use Apple Photos for your catalog, and are happy with it, there is no need to change. Keep using Luminar as a plugin, as it works great that way too. Thanks.
Jim, I think it would help if I could add different colortoning by placing the Pipette more than One time. Also generative extensions still don‘t works Right and needs improvement. On the other Hand I Like the Upgrade.
Hi Volker and not sure how that would work since you are likely creating a different mask for each color you select (right?). So you would need to use the tool for each need, with it's own mask. I hope that makes sense.
I'm impressed with the Luminar team and the continual improvements to their product. I'm a little confuse on when to use the virtual copy. Do I make a copy of photo and edit the copy or edit the original, make the copy and then revert the original? Keep up the good work.
I just use it when I want to edit multiple versions of an image. There's no right way to use it, just make a virtual copy when you feel the need to have various versions of an edit.
Thanks Jim. My problem - I edit with Luminar Neo 1.21 images from my LRc catalog but there's no "Apply" button. I cannot send the edits back to the LRc catalog.
Hi Jim, great news, I'm looking forward to experimenting. I have a couple of questions... 1) i read that the star ratings only exist within Luminar (so it doesnt read sidecar files), do you know if they are exported to JPGs?. 2) any hint that keywords might be coming?. 3) is there any way to turn the AI search into dynamic albums, i.e. a self updating album of 'trees' etc? And lastly, 4) the recommendation used to be to create multiple catalogs, but now it would be more useful to have a single catalog for searching or is there a way to e.g. search for 'trees' across multiple catalogs? Thanks
Hi Brandan and good questions. No sidecar files so I don't believe it will export with the JPG. No word on keywords yet but I keep asking. 😀 No dynamic albums. I only have one catalog but I don't believe this would work across multiples as it needs to see the catalog and it only sees the one you are in. Thanks.
Hi Jim. Do you know if there is a way to tell Neo to re-index the search? It does not appear to pick up anything. Simple keywords like 'flower' or 'people' return no matches even though there are thousands of such images in the catalog. I don't know exactly where it stores the indexing info or how to get it to rebuild the index from the catalog.
I rarely use this, so I just updated but it doesn't include any of these cool features. I dont have Generative Tools etc. Do I have a bad install or is this an additional purchase or??
If you have a perpetual license that was purchased before July 1 of this year, you have to get the new Annual Pass upgrade or convert to a subscription to get all the new features. Otherwise you just get the catalog updates. But your best bet is to email their support team to confirm.
On 0ctober 10 I download the update. But, since 18.08.24 I have the new Canon EOS R5 Mark II, since this day I can't use Luminar because the new camera is not increased in the software. Even in the new version no R5 Mark ii. So all owners of this camer are sti not able to use Luminar Neo. A real NOGO from Skylum/Luminar because we payed for our licence. Yes you are right: Unbelievable but true.
i purchased luminar neo JUST before they started the subscription garbage (which is why i chose them over adobe) so im glad about that, kind of....but wonder....does anyone else have issues with the software crashing....A LOT.? seems to have started happening more since the intro of subscriptions, but thats possibly my paranoia. I purchased Neo, AI and Luminar 4 and really appreciate what they offer, but......they are slowing me down now with the crashes.....even the older programs are less reliable now. anyone else having this issue?
Sorry to hear about this and I have not had crashes, other than once in a blue moon sort of thing. Be sure and email their support team if you haven't already because they may be able to help.
Love your work! I shoot lots of headshots. Can any/many of these features help me edit one photo for many things like blemishes, acne, cleaning stray hair, teeth, eyes, overall skin tones, body blemishes, etc. and batch to all the other photos from the same shoot?
Thanks and yes, sort of. You can copy your edits from one image to the next again and again, and it will apply them. And it will recognize the eyes, mouth, skin etc and apply those same adjustments to them in each photo. But any specific masking, erasing etc will not copy over exactly. Hope that helps.
Thanks Jim. You say "MaDAIRa". We say "MaDEERa". They say (in Portugal) "MaDAYra". I did get a lot more out of your video than pronunciation variations.
i've ony got one problem with it , skylum - Luminar, luminaqr 4, luminar ai, luminar neo, "luminar lifetime" luminar Upgarde .. GRRR when will I learn... can you tell what the problem is ?
Folders in Luminar are just a reflection of the folder structure wherever the originals are located. So arrange as needed in the original location first, then add to Luminar. That's easiest.
Hi Jim, I updated to the new version of Luminar Neo on Thursday but I find it VERY SLOW. The difference in editing between last Wednesday (the old version) and last night (Friday night) is like night and day. Any ideas why this is so? Thanks in advance Jim.
