Maurice was indeed happily married at the time of his death. He was married to Yvonne Spenceley for 28 years and they had 2 children together. Yvonne is also the person who got him to stop drinking. You should check out a Bee Gees song called "Man in the Middle" where he sings lead. Great song!
The part where she says, "You got the music i sent you? Did you learn it"? He plays along, and says "Yes i did". Love that, as the song was written by he, and Barry 💕

Lulu said she was with them when they wrote it, and it felt like it was partly hers too. Barry said the title came from his dog Barnaby's birthday, which was May 1.
Maurice sings lead on Closer Than Close and Man In The Middle. He wrote Man In The Middle for his wife after he entered into his recovery from alcohol addiction. It is a very powerful song. Both are worth a listen.
He also wrote man in the middle about him and his brothers. He felt he was in the middle between Rob and Barry.

I have watched this 100's of times. The song really speaks to me. When Mo and Lulu sing it, the emotion for me is growing apart. When the Bee Gees sang it back in the late 60's I felt like it was about growing up. I love the way these two had this wonderful respect for each other. They were married when Mo was 19 and Lulu was 20. They were just kids, lots of fame and partying. This man makes my heart sing still (RIP dear one). We are getting to hear some lovely baritone. He could do anything.

I didn't know, or had forgotten, their marriage. I enjoyed hearing his lower tone. I think it was his years of alcoholism that contributed to his death, too. It certainly had an impact on my dad's passing nearly 20 years ago.
@@rebeccalipps23Maurice had a rare genetic problem that caused his intestin to twist and cause a blockage. They had to do emergency surgery. He died during the surgery. Afterwards from the autopsy showed that his heart and other organ had been healthy so it was the blockage and the damage that that caused that did it. He passed away within 3 days of entering the hospital in excruciating pain. 😢💔 His twin brother Robin was then checked for the same issue as they were twins and both shared something , the reason they both had it. So they did the surgery to correct it in Robin so that it didn't have the chance for the same to happen with him.

Sadly Mo died suddenly (and unnecessarily) only months later. I imagine she will hold dear the memory that she got to sing with him again. Of course he knew the music since he and his brothers wrote it. In spite of his deep voice he often sang the high harmonies with his brothers. I think Mo was humble but far from shy rather quite gregarious and extroverted. What a terrific musician, arranger and band leader. He was THE musician of the three. Such a loss.
I think he was just behaving as cordially as we would expect, and letting her shine. Sweet man.
Yes, i heared them tell Maurice didn´t feel well as a lead singer, on stage he preferred to be in the background. Robin was very introverted, Maurice an extroverted and very social person.
It is so awesome to finally hear Maurice sing by himself. Now I understand how the brothers achieved their 3 part harmony. Always loved Lulu. They sound so so good together.
There are several songs solo by Maurice- Closer than Close, Man in the middle, I 'm walking on air, WildFlower, and Many More. He was my favorite BeeGEE, a jokster, and a wonderful man. Maurice has a very large vocal range. I hope you get a chance to listen to his Solo's!
Love your reactions. Maurice has beautiful songs were he sings lead with The Bee Gees. Two of those are CLOSER THAN CLOSE and the other is MAN IN THE MIDDLE. As you can see he has a fantastic voice. He also sings the song WILDFLOWER alone, just beautiful.

Maurice was charming and funny, and knew how to contribute while staying in the background doing his harmonies and playing his instruments. But he was actually very gregarious, not shy. Lovely smile. He also had a singing voice with a wide range. He could sing low or high or in-between, plus he could vary his voice quality a lot. He could imitate accents very well (wonderful imitation of John Lennon, for example), and play many instruments, self-taught like all the Bee Gees. His sound was as important to the Bee Gees as that of any of the others.
Beautiful song, beautifully sung by Lulu and Mo. Their rendition is so touching, yet so different than when Barry sings it.

One of my favorite early Bee Gee songs. A great song of lament. I think we have all looked back at times and said "What lf .....".
If you want to hear Maurice sing lead vocals, listen to "Man in the Middle" or "Closer than Close". And all Bee Gees could sing falsetto. If you listen to "Nights on Broadway" on the Midnight Special video, you will hear Maurice sing lead falsetto. A bit cheeky Lulu asking Maurice if he learned the music here, seeing as he and Barry wrote it. But Maurice was always so laid back and he let Lulu have the laugh. The entertainment business doesn't have a high track record for lasting marriages. Eventually Maurice found his soul mate in Yvonne & was married to her for 28 years until his death and Barry has been married to his wife, Linda for 52 years. Maurice & Lulu sang lovely together. Maurice was always my favorite BG. Miss them all, Maurice, Robin & Andy. xxx

Gibb and Lulu married on 18 February 1969 and divorced in 1973. Their careers and his heavy drinking forced them apart and they divorced, childless, in 1973. Gibb later said they both drank: "we didn't have any responsibilities, we'd just party."

First leadvocals of Maurice ever are to here on a song called 'All By Myself', out of Bee Gees album 'Nostalgia' when they lived in Australia, those days. Maurice had a wide range in singing from down to bass up to tenor and falsetto (in harmonies) as well.

Maurice had a drinking problem and at times he was drunk during their performances but he finally came to his senses and was the groups musical genus. Try Closer than Close or Man in the Middle if you want to hear more.

Bee Gees wrote and recorded this many, many years ago. Someone else had a big hit with this song.
About Mo's vocal range... He could sing lovely baritone, just like this, and did some bass parts in certain songs, an octave under Barry. Think about "Dimensions" from "High Civilization." But, his range was so outstanding, he almost always took the high harmony above Robin. His voice was beautiful, and one of the things he could do with such magic was blend into the harmonies. He was just a master. You want some straight up rock and roll with Mo on lead? Try "House of Shame." I love that one.

I have always understood that Maurice wrote The first of May” Maurice was a very talented and gifted man with a beautiful personality. With regards to his breakup from Lulu Maurice said in a interview that there was two careers in the same house and the marriage suffered. Maurice went on to say that both hoping and Lulu both drank,and partied as there was no children and no responsibilities. They married in 1969 and were divorced by 1974/1975, I feel sorry for his second wife Yvonne as she married him in 1975 had two gorgeous children and was with Maurice till he died in 2003. I don’t think Maurice and Lulu would ever have rekindle their relationship.
Lulu was heartbroken when Mo passrd. When asked why she didnt attend the funeral, she replied that they had been broken up for years and she did not want her presence to overshadow what should be a private time for Mo's wife and children. She also mentioned she would keep the memories they made.

I read that she attended privately with the family as she and his second wife were always close friends.

lulu was a star at 15 and she is still a star , as a 15 yr old at the same time I was in lust with her from afar Maurice was the introvert of the brothers but when interviewed he was always the interesting one at least in my book ,and he sang the bass notes to the high notes of the other 2 , but he also could sing falsetto which he does on many of their recordings
Mo was the extrovert; Robin was the introvert.

Funny that she asked him if he had learnt the song…it’s a Bee Gees song, Barry did it. The break up was mainly due to his drink and drugs and immaturity!. They remained friends…he was remarried to Evonn and she was remarried too.
He died not to long after this. Maurice was happily married when he sang this.

She is a gorgeous woman, and it seems they still had regard and care for each other, but Mo had a different life with his wife Yvonne and their two children This performance was in 2002. Sadly, Mo passed only months later in January of 2003. That makes it all the more poignant for me.

I have an Ex Boyfriend from my High School days, if I see him I'll happily talk to Him. He was a bit of a bad boy who dealt drugs. But with me he was always a gentleman and never offered me any. For years after we broke up without my knowledge he was looking out and protecting me. You'll be glad to know he left the area and got out of the drug scene. There's a special Gentleman in my life and if we get married. That Ex Boyfriend is someone I'd want to invite.
They married young and both had big careers happening and it just wasn't the right time.
I wouldn't have been on a show with my ex, no way. And she acts as if he should have to learn a song he and his brothers wrote and recorded, Barry sang lead on it if I remember. She dumped Maurice and almost instantly had another guy while the ink dried on the divorce papers. He had quite a range. And he was remarried to a woman who helped him to get sober and they had two children.
Maurice has a great range. His falsetto is better than Barry's.
They were very young when they were married plus Maurice s drinking problem just because they divorced dosent mean they hated each other. Just because they stayed on good terms and remained the good they shared doesn't mean they wanted back together
