- There's a bassist who must receive more credit. The disco era would be nothing without this man!
I'm talking about none other than...Maurice Gibb of The Bee Gees.

What is your favorite Bee Gees bass line or disco bass line?! 😋
My top 5 no particular order
Jive Talking/Night Fever/Staying Alive/You shoulda be dancing(yeah!)/Grease.I remember we couldn't believe our ears back then.Such perfection.
Such a lush Top notch production at the time!Another levelStill are Unbeatable!
To me Bee Gees and Abba made the most well crafted stuff of the '70s in maistream music scene ..and also in production terms i would also add the likes of Giorgio Moroder and Frank Farian.
Living Together, Love You Inside Out, You Stepped Into My Life, and Lovers all have fantastic bass lines.
@@triad5766 oh 'love you imside out".'yoi stepped into ny life" too!!!.
I’d like you to break down more of the individual Bee Gees songs as far as baselines they’re incredible
Bass lines
Maurice wasn’t a disco bassist. He was a musician who helped shape Disco. He was an inventor and a songwriter. Bee Gees weren’t a disco band either. They just made music during disco. They made music LONG before and LONG after.
Brilliant comment, sir! Second it!
100% CORRECT!!! thank you :)
The brothers Gibb hated the word disco and the backlash directed at them because of it. They called their music contemporary r&b and blue eyed soul.
@@Zlata1313 Same with Bootsy, Verdine & Larry. I am so sick of these legendary bassists being lumped into disco.
You're right, but the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack made them just about the biggest band on the planet, which is why so many people see them as a disco band. First impressions stick.
I've said this before. People just don't know The Bee Gees as well as they think they do. They were so infinitely talented.
Agreed, I loved their old stuff (Run to Me, Massachusetts, etc.) and their disco stuff.
Finally, a wonderful tribute to the bass playing genius of Maurice Gibb! The man was beyond amazing-a legend.
And even best if the tribute is made by a young steve jobs…????
My family are close friends with the Gibb family, especially Maurice Gibb. My mother is Godmother to Maurice's daughter Samantha. I used to be personal assistant to Andy Gibb. Thank you for creating this video. 👍👍👍
And Nick? ua-cam.com/video/u4xrZwZEcU8/v-deo.htmlsi=fUakrDNhN_sHJccp
Cool!
You are so beyond blessed to be close friends either the Gibb family! Barry is the only man to ever make me pass out the first time I saw him on American bandstand in 1978 and 46 years later I love him even more! I would love to complete my bucket list and meet him but I would probably pass out if I did! Barry has saved my life during the darkest times of my life and PLEASE TELL HIM THANK YOU SO MUCH AND I TRUELY AM SO GRATEFUL THEY SHARED THEIR GIFT WITH THE WORLD!! If I’m ever asked….what was your life all about… my answer…. I loved the brothers Gibb with all my heart almost my entire life💝💝💝💝Andy,Mo,Rob and BARRY🥰 Thank you shawnhealycat1166❤
Woww fair play!!!😃😃👍👍👍
👏👏👏
In my opinion he had the best voice of the trio. Above and Beyond, Wildflower and Hold Her In Your Hand were some of the songs that demonstrated this. Pity he wasn't given enough recognition for this.
Agree!
Nice to see some appreciation for Maurice.
Metal guy who loves the Bee Gees checking in. Such underrated music, and Maurice was so brilliant. Thanks for the vid bro.
I love that the Bee Gees even reached the metalheads. So freakin' cool. Thanks, man!
Same here! The best part about the Bee Gees is the different eras of the career. To label them as disco is so wrong. They were unbelievably talente.
Foo Fighters did a tribute to BG's. The hate on disco was so wrong.
It's good to like different kinds of music. Shows your Intelligence
I'm a dark metal head too bro. If I can admire Karen Carpenter's songs, then the Bee Gees aren't far off. They ARE underrated and extremely talented.
Maurice Gibb was the most talented when it came to instruments. If not for him, I don't believe they would have ever gotten back together.
Mo was a phenomenal artist. He was the glue that held the group together. By all means he was a really funny, loving guy. He had his vices, he overcame alcoholism to become a loving husband and Father. He was truly talented, and hasn't gotten the credit he deserves. I am so glad u did this video on him. Rest easy Mo, you are truly missed. 💓
Who’s Mo?
Very talented lad. If you're under the age of 50, it's hard to imagine the backlash this band got from the rock crowd of the late 70s/early 80s. They probably had more album burnings than The Beatles. Got to the point they couldn't even record anymore, instead relegated to songwriters on others' hits. Time smooths the hard edges, and hopefully people appreciate how talented this band really was.
The best always attract jealous cry babies.
Just seen this clip & read your comment, admittedly there is some music i don't like, but I do have a quite eclectic mix of music i listen to & enjoy, i am one of the rock crowd, but i also enjoy & appreciate good music & musicians, including the Bee gees, talent at all levels, as well as attracting praise, will also unfortunately attract criticism from jealous idiots,
Mo was the Go.. beautiful human being!
I never burned a BeeGees album but gladly would have given the opportunity. I dislike their high pitched voices. It was impossible to avoid hearing their songs. The whole disco lifestyle was repulsive.
That said, it is interesting to hear that really cool isolated bass and realize how important Maurice was to their success.
The beegees weren't just disco......Barry had a really wonderful chest voice...... they had big hits pre disco.....eg...New York mining disaster, To love somebody, Lonely Days, How can you mend a broken heart....tons more to even list here......I feel so bad that such talent is bracketed into the narrow disco period.......
..
Fanny (Be Tender With My Love) - 'nuff said
Thanks for putting him in the spotlight! He was probably often overlooked because he didn't sing as much as Barry and Robin I think...But he played many instruments and wrote songs and sang too a very talented man!!. He was just as important as the other two. When he died, the Bee Gees died. He was irreplaceable.
Some of the greatest performers of the past 50 years all in one family.
And NONE of the brothers could read music....THATS CRAZY
No way!!!!
I always try to give credit to the bass players where deserved. Without the bass players, music would be missing its soul.
Maurice always seemed like the coolest guy in the group.
A very underrated band. Great songwriting and longevity
If you had moved to more modern Bee Gees, "For Whom The Bell Tolls" has an awesome bass track.
And he was responsible for the "stomps" in You Win Again!!
@@debbienewton909 In fairness that's in line with the 80s everyone was doing stuff like that at the time
Mo was a magnificent multi-instrumentalist. He was the best musician of the four of them. I’m sure Barry Gibb would agree.
Oh yeah
I totally agree, so underrated and his voice is different but great, and he did great songs like Closer than close or, The man in the middle.
I absolutely agree. He was a master far beyond what is called disco music.
May be. But Barry compositions are even better than Beatles one s.
The jive talking bass line is epic.
The Bee Gees were naturally talented. No editing needed. Listen to them sing accapella.
My 'Bee Gees phase' started in 1966 and it's never stopped.
No disrespect intended but do we know for sure that the these bass lines were actually recorded by Maurice and not a studio musician? Asking because that was the common practice in the day to use top notch studio pros.
@@TheMidnightSmokerBBQ100 fuckin' percent. Except for the synth bass lines, another player probably played them.
I wasn’t born till ‘67, so my ‘Bee Gees phase’ probably started around ‘68. Still going strong!
You never stop liking them. Jive talkin just picks you up every time you hear it.
And the lights all went out in Massachusetts, Have you seen my wife mister Jones?
Maurice Gibb was an incredible musician, songwriter, and vocalist. The music that he made with his brothers is timeless!
Maurice seemed such a lovely chap. Love the Bee Gees.
I've been telling people for a few years that Maurice Gibb was an underrated bass player even though he's known more as a singer. Maurice lays down some serious funk on those Bee Gees Disco hits.
Maurice was the unsung musical genius behind the trio. The musician and arranger.
It totally seems so, so underrated and undercredited.
And, as Alan Kendall said in the documentary... the glue that held it all together.
@@clannad99germany70 overrated comment.
Maurice was my favorite BeeGee. RIP
Maurice was an multi instrumentalist and a great musician.
I’m glad that Maurice is getting the recognition he so deserved when he was alive. Sadly missed, never forgotten 🌹
You speak the ABSOLUTE TRUTH!!! Maurice is my favorite Bee Gee!
Me too!!!
About a year ago I watched the Don Kirshner live shows and reached the same conclusion....Maurice Gibb is an incredible bassist.
I’m always in awe of artists who play complicated patterns while singing and Maurice Gibb does it with panache!
Maurice is a Legend! Im proud to be a young Bee Gees fan. RIP Maurice, Robin, and Andy.
A perfect example of "Less is more". Mo Gibb superb bassist.
Thanks for detailing so many aspects of their talents I have an even better appreciation of their talent now. Maurice was always the most talented as far as I was concerned.
Incredible talent. Thank you showcasing Maurice. ❤❤❤
This was a treat! I love The Bee Gees, and I’ve long felt Maurice tends to get overlooked. He was a very subtle, judicious bass player. Everything he played served the song, without overshadowing. Jive Talkin’ is one of my favorites.
Thanks for highlighting Maurice's talent. He was so overlooked. The Bee Gees were the combination of three, each with their own unique gifts. May all of their music live on forever. ❤
Maurice and his brothers one of the greats. Thanks for giving Maurice some shine as he was a cool cat.
Already love the Bee Gees, but thanks for high lighting Maurice in this video!
People always spoke of the harmonies and the high notes, which are great, but what I noticed as the difference maker in the most popular songs was the bass.
Yes, Maurice had a lot to do with the overall sound of this juggernaut. Brilliant work. I'm glad you mentioned his singing, because "Lay It on Me" is a great tune that he wrote and sang. I would have been happy to hear more solo lead vocals from him.
Totally agree that the discipline to not play too many notes makes Maurice shine
He never got enough love. But Bee Gees were so much more than Disco
Maurice was an amazing guy! His bass playing has been extremely influential to bass players and musicians of all ages and genres!
Barry always said they were a Tripod. Take any one leg away and the whole thing would fall over.
I love Mo’s speaking voice.Warm and rich,and so friendly.
I listen to the BeeGees and check out the writing credits. Maurice was responsible for a ton of their biggest hits. Every one of the BeeGees is phenomenal.
It’s terrible how overlooked they are. They have a huge versatile catalog and most people judge them based on 5 years of their career. Whatever disco was isn’t important to me, good music is important to me and their music was out of this world! Just when I think I’ve heard everything they’ve ever done, I manage to stumble upon something else
Thank you! Still one of the most popular (yet underrated) groups of all time. IMO
I've played bass for more than 30 years, how did I not know this already? Life long fan of the Bee Gees already, this just increased my appreciation for their talents.
Right?! So amazing!!
I wish he got this attention while he was still with us.
Thank you for showcasing Maurice's incredible talent. He's my favorite Bee Gee. To those who haven't listened to any of The Bee Gees pre- and post-disco music, do yourself a favor and check out their other works that cross multiple musical genres.
I agree ❤
Nights on Broadway bass line sets the standard of greatness in popular music of that erra and even today. I love that track more than words can express. The drumming and the bass is a huge reason why.
I think that was a synth bass played by Blue Weaver, but it is a killer bass part.
Nights on broadway one of my faves. Possibly favorite. ❤️
100% great song!
I have long felt the greatness of Maurice. Thank you for bringing it out. ❤
The way his bass lines melded with the guitar creating sort if a two-person ten-string groove machine was some magic stuff.
Stayin’ Alive is a great example of that.
Maurice was one excellent musician and composer!! His bass playing was almost like McCartney but groovier 🥳🥳
I’ve always thought the bass line to Stayin Alive was really killer and drives the song.
The Bee Gees are one of my favorite groups.
That was a great demonstration of how Maurice's bass playing excelled in ways you wouldn't expect, like spacing out the notes so they had more force when they landed, and shaping the song around a complex but not busy groove.
Thanks for this long overdue wake-up call. Maurice was indeed a phenomenal bassist. Celebrating this multi-talented "man in the middle"!
I grew up with Bee Gees music from their days emerging in the 60's as an incredible 3 piece harmony to their stellar work after the breakup of the band, and albums like Main Course and Children of the World and then of course, Saturday Night Fever. Subsequently, we had Spirits Having Flown, but a p-ssed off DJ in Chicago led a US wide ban on everything disco and everyone forgot about anything the Bee Gees did outside of Saturday Night Fever. Though they had continued to write hits for Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers (Islands in the Stream) and Celine Dione (Immortality), their own reputation as a group took over a decade to come back. Watching Barry Gibb taught me how to use open tuning and Maurice taught me that a grooving bass line was more important than learning Roundabout note-for-note. An incredible band, and so sad the only one left is Barry after losing Andy, Maurice, and Robbin (in that order).
Count me as having always been an unapologetic fan of the The Bee Gees.
How could he sing and play those fantastic bass lines. What a bass monster!! Up there with Geddy Lee and Sting.
I like his song man in the middle he was definitely the glue to the band
Yes. Thank you. Much appreciated seeing Mo being showcased. Such a great composer with a ginormous pot of glue
Never realized how great his baselines were… not technical but oh so tasty… true musician… better then just tech but no feel… great band
What strikes me the most, hearing the "isolated" bass when you play, is really the space Maurice left!
Loved the Bee Gees disco era, and I agree Maurice's bass lines played a vital part.
I loved rock AND I loved the BeeGee’s!! Brings back memories of 8th grade roller skating. 💕
Excellent video. Excellent comments. Mo was really a great musician, and a great arranger too. Bee Gees are my fav band ever❤❤❤ The most prolific songwriters ever: more than 1030 quality songs in around 13 musical genres. Geniuses
Thank you for making this fantastic video about Maurice Gibb's incredible talents as a bassist. The Bee Gees were one of the best groups of the rock and roll era, not just a "disco group" as they were falsely labeled. And thank you for pronouncing his name correctly.
Yes!! Mo was exceptional!!! I believe they were all exceptional in their own way!!!
His bass lines is what drew me to the Bee Gees.
So good to see Mo receiving the recognition he deserves.👏👏👏
"Nights on Broadway" has a great Bass line and I think blends their
harmonics with the music so well.
That’s the song I thought of first! Thanks!
Yes he was my favorite of all time. It seems like he didn’t get the credit for all his talent that he had. He was all so peace marker between the brothers. I just love everything about him. I’m so happy that you did this video on Mo. he deserved all the credit he gets. Which is not enough. He had that wonderful smile and he’s jokes were good too. The most talent of the group in my opinion. Love you Mo 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
You said everything I wanted to say ❤ Mo ❤
I’ve always said Maurice Gibb never got his due. Thank you so much for this tribute!
They were a huge hit before disco and that was a fabulous cherry on the cake! We danced our brains out back then rock, disco wtf ever. ✌️💃
I've subscribed and hit the LIKE button because seeing someone give MAURICE the credit he deserves brought me here! He also had a great sense of humor too! Glad I found your channel Andrew Freed!
Thank you! 😄🤘🤘
Fanny ( Be Tender with My Love) is an unheralded bit of lovely bass playing.
my favorite Bee Gees song ♥
@@dianebuzek723 Agreed!
Agreed. This song is in my top 5 favorites of theirs too. I don't think they ever played it live - probably too hard to perform live. What a gorgeous song and arrangement. That Main Course album...wow.
Gorgeous songw
@@lavalp I saw a video here on YT (somewhere... ) that Maurice said "we all love Fanny, but..." Barry discovered 12 track backing or something like that, and added so much background singing that it was impossible to do it live and have it sound the same.
I was a fan of the pre-disco Bee Gees, but my wife was a fan of all of their music. When they were touring in support of their One album I got us tickets. Hearing and watching them perform live was eye opening, and I gained a whole new appreciation for their entire catalog, even the songs that they wrote for other artists. Maurice seemed like the one who was responsible for the arrangements and musicality, what an awesome musician!
This is a beautiful tribute to Maurice Gibb!! I love how this feels like an education video😆😊
Bee Gees was incredibly adaptable. I was thirteen when "you win again" was released and became a fan immediately. Maurices' sudden death at only 53 was a tragedy😢
Yes, Maurice is a great example of playing a constructed part that provides separate movement to the melody. And it worked perfectly.
I saw them in concert in 1978, still have the 11x14 color program!! Sooo much fun, danced the entire time & for a 13 year old it is 1 of my favorite memories!! It's great that your generation is appreciating their incredible talent, songs & singing!!
I grew up with the music of the Bee Gees and never knew that Maurice was behind all these great bass lines. As a former bass player I've always singled out great bass playing in songs and your coverage makes me appreciate the Bee Gees even more now. You got a new sub because of this...thank you!
Thank you so much for acknowledging the great talent of our Bee Gees. This was the best video I’ve ever seen on Maurice’s fantastic talent and skills. Thank you for the respect.
You are a mean player also.
I've always loved The Bee Gees, did not know Maurice was so phenomenal!
Hi Andrew! Maurice was an exceptional musician, an amazing singer and an awesome arranger. The Bee Gees wouldn't have been The Bee Gees without him. Also, I just wanted to point out that The Bee Gees have sold over 220 million records and counting. Cheers!
I’m trippin on the spacing of the notes that he was able to maintain…what a trip! he was definitely next level with that bass. Bravo RIP Maurice Gibb.
Yes Maurice was the link that made Bee Gees sound black!
Mo was my favorite he never got the appreciation that he deserved. His alcoholism was a problem but I think that was taken advantage of to not let him excel maybe it was part of why he drank who knows. Miss the whole group.
I'm a 45 year old woman who has always loved classic rock and singer/songwriters. About 2 years ago I started to listen to the Bee Gees in a feverish fog of COVID. Yeah, I fell in love with sexy as Hell Barry, but in all of the interviews I watched I grew to love the personality of Maurice. The Bee Gees definitely don't get enough recognition.
The Jive Talkin' bassline was one of the earliest synth basslines. It was played by session keyboardist Blue Weaver on an ARP 2600, though Maurice overdubbed some extra bass.
I think Maurice worked it out on his bass guitar though, and then gave it to Blue to play.
@@TheGerkuman Weaver stated, "Usually Maurice would play bass guitar, but he was away from the studio that night. And when Maurice came back, we let him hear it and suggested he re-record the bass line on his bass guitar". "I really liked the synth bass lines", Maurice said. "I overdubbed certain sections to add bass extra emphasis".
@@kennet7837 Fair enough! Blue often never got the credit he deserved for his work with the Bee Gees. I don't think any of the 70's era band did, or Colin and Vince from the 60's era.
@@kennet7837 Very interesting. So Blue Weaver came up with that bassline? Wow - it's just brilliant.
His base playing is overshadowed by his singing.
What was incredible, according to them, was they could not read musical notes. The musicians carried out what they envisioned for a song. They supplied the words and melodies, and the musicians put in the musical notes.
Everyone loved this band most never looked this deep... very cool video
The Bass is almost always overlooked unless it's missing
Thank you Andrew for your great video on Maurice! Absolutely love the Bee Gees, especially Mo ❤! I am a new subscriber also......Again, big THANKS 😊!
Maurice was doing the falsetto voice even before Barry started using it.
Maurice fazia os falsetes nas apresentações ao vivo. No estúdio foi Barry.❤
The baseline is often the best part of disco songs.
