    I see this all the time people get cheap calves off Craig’s list or private treaty and then they are mad when they don’t bring what beef cattle bring at the sale happens all the time. Dairy cattle cost way more to feed and a lot longer to finish and carcasses are not that great when finished. If your gonna feed dairy animals plan on owning them for 2 years buy 400 pounders and sell them in a package preferably 1 lb packages. Only way to do it small scale. I have owned over 400 of these things sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t

      Yeah, that is definitely the way to do it. What was I thinking....haha. But seriously, gonna do it different next time, if there is a next time. 👍

      Ridiculous comment.
      Half the so-called "certified Angus" program cattle are Holstein ×Angus with minimal white markings.
      All those "good" steaks at the national franchise "steakhouses" are dairy cross for the middle class

    I saw it when you started loading them. I already knew why you took a beating. You need to look up cattle prices in your state online, and follow them. Then you'll know what sale barn you can do best at when you sell. It's a business like any other. There's always somebody looking to skin you. Good luck on the next crop.

      Never having had holstein steers before, I usually have had angus in past, I didn't really explore where I should take them to sale..... big mistake on my part. I won't make that mistake again though....haha. On to the next batch. Thanks, I need a little luck every now and then...👍

    This is the problem with Holstein and Holstein cross. I've got beef cows some have a touch of Holstein or jersey. I run a Brahman bull, the calves bring a premium price due to hybrid vigor.
    I've got an uncle that has all Holstein cows runs a beef bull and never keeps any of his heifer calves, his calves bring less than half of mine per pound.

    Well that was the pits. Ya spend time raising an animal with hopes of making some money and then bam. Was a nice ride down, I enjoy the valley and mountain views. Ya if you had the money, might have been a perfect time to bye some cattle. And enough hay to feed them. I worked for a guy years ago that was an auctioneer. He would bring home critters that like you said, brought 10 dollars. Sometimes it didn't work out if they weren't to weak, or sick to keep them going. Thanks for sharing Josh. I enjoy your videos. I was a bit surprised that you brought them to a sale barn , they were a bit too light for the auction ring there is an old saying done weighing, done selling. I raise a lot of Holstein calves for live sale at c. 1000 lbs plus the jersey crosses are basically worthless over here unless they are in calf .

    Yeah as soon as you started to load them I knew they wouldn't bring but guessed 68 cents. Those holstiens don't bring much. You can't start out with junk and expect to get #1 prices. I bought cattle for 20 years.

    • @dusttodusthomestead
      @dusttodusthomestead  5 місяців тому

      Yep. Never had holsteins before and haven't since. Although, I was at the sale couple of months ago and they were bringing just over a dollar all day. But times are different and I still won't try them again. Not worth the effort and time in my opinion. I'll just chalk it up as a failed experiment. 👍

    • @dusttodusthomestead
      @dusttodusthomestead  2 роки тому

      Well, when I purchased them they had someone else's brand on them. So, I always brand them when that is the case. I branded them maybe a month before I sold them. At that point I wasn't sure if or when I was going to sell them. But I ended up needing to sell them. 👍 Yeah, my timing was not very good on that.

    Hell the auction barn where I’m at is crooked as all get out. I had some beef calves go in and they never got to the showroom. Sold per head not by weight out the back door for 100 dollars a head for 250-350 pounders. Everyone else that sold they got 450-600 dollars. Owner said it’s my fault for not staying to make sure they sold across the scale. I Know the guy that bought them and he buys for the owner of the sale. It’s hard to stomach.

      I raise mainly Angus mixed cattle and about 20 sheep in Ohio. I got 1.75lb last year for my male calves last fall, dad sold some lighter 350 lb calves this summer for 2-2.25 lb at the sale barn. Now the market is closer to 1.50lb bouncing around based on the quality of calf. The sheep market looked good for the spring and summer with those high prices but is way down now. Maybe a good time to get in, but they are more work than cows.
