  • Everyone was blown away as 2 new buyers battled it out for an all black heifer calf, believed to possibly be a beef cross of some type. This was never mentioned and by the frame it looked dairy to me. The price soared to over $300! Looked to me like an $80 calf maybe. I did end up with 8 calves at a great price. Enjoy!

    Watching this for the nostalgia trip. Used to go to the local auction barn with my grandfather. Love a day at the auction.

    For crazy legs, use newspaper rolled around his leg a couple inches below the knee, to the hoof, then tape it off with duct tape. Use enough newspaper to where the ankle won't bend. About 2 o3 folded pages. After you finish, help him stand. He should take right off, every day you will see a difference. It takes about 2 weeks on a new born.

    My grandparents have passed away this past year and I've gotten so nostalgic for sale barn days. I wish I had stayed with it instead of becoming a nurse. I've gotten so burnt out.

      Melina, sorry to hear about your grandparents. It’s never too late to chase a passion. I hope it works out nursing or otherwise. All the best - DJ

    I raise 1/2 angus 1/2 jersey. Buy them here in South Dakota. Pay way more than what u do at auction for bottle calves. What do u think for eating, and or selling for some profit? P.s. love your videos

    I honestly don’t know what my bulls would sell for at auction but I’ve been getting about 4200 for my black Irish pure breds. W/ papers

    @03:25, what was going on with the calf's leg? Did he get hurt at auction? I attended my first auction a few weeks ago. I didn't realize that price was per head. Luckily , lady in front of me stopped me before I went crazy. Did come home with some nice turkeys. Excited to go back.

    • @PowersFamilyFarm
      @PowersFamilyFarm  2 роки тому

      The calf wasn’t hurt at the auction. Pretty common for trouble calves to brought to auction. Sometimes hard births leave them a little banged up or born a bit knuckled over. Sounds like you had a good experience. Thank you for commenting Missy. - DJ

    They sell some buy the pound and some dollar. I'm confused looking forward to NJ auction how does it work? Thanks

    • @PowersFamilyFarm
      @PowersFamilyFarm  2 роки тому

      David, only animals sold by the head (dollar) here are goats. Everything else is by the pound. If you pay $1.25/pound for a calf that’s 100 pounds it’ll cost you $125. If you bid on a per head animal weight isn’t a factor. The auctioneer will tell you if you are paying per pound or head. All the best - DJ

    That wasn’t handled correctly on the salebarn’s part. It’s not your fault they didn’t do their part to get the buyers there. I’d change commission companies. It’s up to them to assure that the calves bring market value, that’s their job. Whether they buy them themselves or not. The reason I know this is, I own a livestock auction myself in SW Oklahoma. We avg around 2000 head/week but big salebarn/little salebarn doesn’t matter, it’s the same concept.

    • @bigskye606

      @@narrowexpress9096 They are sold by the lb. Usually works out to about 80 cents to just over a dollar per lb. depending on the calf's condition, time of year and buyer demand.

    • @cacaokingdom3122

      @@bigskye606 that is dependent on age of the calves. Young calves here typically sell by the head rather than by weight. They don't go by weight until they hit a couple hundred pounds. Even in the auction in the video the bottle calves were going by the head rather than by weight. Dairy day olds here can sometimes drop as low as $5-10/hd.
