    👍👍I have to agree with the previous comment, regarding, 'how to paint a child's portrait'. I have sketched the picture of my two year old great grandson and am ready to add colour. I've been looking at many other tutorials and so many do not tell the actual colour, many just ignore this altogether. So, Thank You so very much for giving me the confidence to start adding the colour. Your example is a little younger than my boy, but I'm sure the colours will be much the same, and anyway it was how you went about the whole painting. I am especially impressed as to how you did the eyes and the mouth, but mainly the eyes. Well done, and Thank you again for this amazing tutorial. Your work is the BEST. 😄😃🌹

    I usually paint portraits in oils and I'm good at it, today I tried my first portrait in watercolours and it was a complete disaster, LOL.
    With the help of your video and a few others I've watched, I'll fix the portrait tomorrow.
    Thanks, stay cool. 😄✌

    Hi Emily, very helpful tutorial.I like the way you voice over so we get all the details and instruction concisely (without the extra chatter) Thankyou for that😀. Did you stretch this paper beforehand if not what weight was it.?What is the white border tape called. Thanks heaps

    • @EmilyOlsonArt
      @EmilyOlsonArt  3 роки тому +1

      I appreciate your comment! This is just a 140lb cold pressed 5x7" block, so due to the small size and the fact that it's on a block, no stretching is necessary. I think I just used Blick Artists Tape for the border.

Thank you for clarifying some of the few looming concerns I have been carrying, regarding adding layers & other random specifics, which for some reason no one else has addressed (to my awareness)! I cannot thank you enough, nor can my future portraits😂😂!!! God bless you-You do simply incredible work, and are a truly gifted instructor!!!❤️❤️ 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

    Great tutorial do you recommend hot or cold press and should we use a heavier weight like 300 lb.

    • @EmilyOlsonArt
      @EmilyOlsonArt  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Donna! I prefer cold pressed paper because it handles tons of wet in wet layers better than hot press. 140lb is fine, especially for smaller pieces. Larger than 9x12, however, you’ll want to either paint on a paper block (with the sides glued down) or prestretch your paper, or go with the heavier weight 300lb paper.

    Hi Emily, lovely painting! I am painting a baby from a picture that is having a lot of shadow. I can not see the pupils. I would like to paint them, but don't know how to determine the right position of the pupils. The baby is looiing a bit to the richt. I can see in your painting that one pupil is more in the center and the other is not. Is there a rule how to determine their position?

    • @EmilyOlsonArt
      @EmilyOlsonArt  2 роки тому +1

      Hmm, I'm sure if there is a rule for pupil placement, but if you can't see it in the reference photo, it might look most realistic if you paint the larger values and shapes that you see, rather than trying to peer too deeply into the shadows. Best of luck with your painting! ❤️

    Thank you, Emily, for so many extremely helpful hints! Could you give me a ballpark guess as to what would be a fair price for a commissioned 11” x15” watercolor portrait of 2 year old girl? I did one for a friend for free, and it turned out really well, but I’m curious as to how to price something like this in the future. If there is a way to send a picture only to you of what I did I will do that if you want. Thank you.

    • @EmilyOlsonArt
      @EmilyOlsonArt  Рік тому

      Hi Louisa! What you charge really depends on your level of experience, size and difficulty of artwork, and ultimately-you should charge enough so you won’t feel resentful, but not so much that it’s above market rate. Pricing is a very individual thing.

    Hello, your work is very valuable. I am really a fundamentalist. Thank you. Please bring a real photo of the portrait or nature of the sea, forest, sky, mountain and teach how to mix the color for its various components to turn it into a watercolor painting. If you have a lot of training, the channel will be very welcome, in which case your effort will have an educational burden. Thank you. Please teach this type of color mix training a lot. Thank you very much for your efforts.
